Excellent sample.......2005-10-25
Some of the Best.......2005-09-11
Storms.......2005-03-09
A quick answer would be simple: we simply cannot afford to purchase every single piece by every single composer we love. And if the buyer is familiar with the music, he or she would perhaps only want the famous selections everyone knows. In my case, I am particularly picky with recordings and don't have the time to meddle with libraries or going to stores that offer listening stations. Recordings vary greatly and so does playing ability. So why did I go with Essential Beethoven?
It is released with Decca, one of the finest classical music companies out there. You are guaranteed no gimmick or inexpensively recorded tracks on this compilation. Essential B. also has a wider selection than other compilations I looked at. For once, there isn't a movement to be found from the Fifth Symphony. If that's all you want to buy, look elsewhere. Essential B. has pieces I was not familiar with, so here I am listening to it.
Regrettably, there are three distinct issues with this recording, and I want to get them out of the way. 1. Für Elise is atrociously boring to listen to. As a pianist, it is fun to play and almost required learning for the beginner. It should've been dropped. 2. Piano Concerto No. 5 is missing the third movement. It is common to drop the first movement here, but the second and third movements are programmatically tied, providing some of the most emotionally charged music ever put down on lined paper. Also, this rendition of the concerto is less than inspiring and I regret that it is the famous Ashkenazy playing this version. There is almost no life in the playing. 3. The remastering could've been better. The listener will enjoy the loud and boisterous pieces, but the quieter parts, and even the soft piano solos, will have him straining his ears to the point of exasperation. Because of this, I recommend listening on headphones or in a place where you can turn the volume up a little more than usual.
That aside, the rest of the tracks are well recorded, extremely well played, and varied enough to quench even the most learned ears. Decca has included pieces conducted by Sir Georg Solti, one of the greatest conducters in my opinion. (Another "collection" solely conducted by Solti is the "Immortal Beloved" soundtrack.) The orchestral pieces are lush and the range is dynamic. (A little too dynamic, like I stated above, in some areas.) The inclusion of movement IV from Symphony no. 8 pleases me, as I feel this is the least appreciated symphony, overshadowed by Symphony no. 9
The piano pieces are some of the best renditions I've heard. I own all of Ashkenazy's sonatas, so it was nice to hear a movement from "The Tempest" played by Stephen Kovacevich, who plays with fierce determination. Selections from B's piano concertos are fantastic and have prompted me to delve further into listening to more concertos from him. The Rondo from Piano Concerto No. 2, played by Radu Lupu, is one of the most upbeat and wonderfully played pieces here.
To round things off nicely is a movement from the Violin Sonata No. 5, played by the one and only Itzhak Perlman! The piano is caressed by Mr. Ashkenazy himself, and he does so lovingly. You will also find pieces from a string quartet, a violin Romance (and orchestra), and one overture: the "Egmont." I'm not a huge fan of this rendition either, but that's probably because I've heard the Egmont a thousand times.
A huge bonus with this collection are the three choral selections at the end, two of which are from "Fidelio," an opera I've yet to hear in its entirety. The Prisoners' Chorus is beautiful. The introduction sounds very much like a major contribution to Charles Ives's 1906 piece "The Unanswered Question." The compilation ends with Symphony No. 9's finale, but unfortunately, it is a horribly edited excerpt, and mixed extremely hot. I have to turn my volume down everytime this comes on.
I would like to make a little note about the art design, however. Credit here is given to Mark Millington, who did a fine job blending black & white photos of storm clouds, an inspiring sculpture, and blackletter-styled fonts. The CDs themselves are a contrasting bright orange. As a sucker for marketing, I would've plunked money down for this compilation just for the art!

Venice was a good place to be in the 17th century if you liked to hang out in church--not that you had much choice in those days. Gabrieli's reputation rests on his "polychoral" compositions: works for several choirs, a choir being any size group of voices or instruments. For example, a sacred composition for three choirs might have two brass groups and one chorus, or two choruses and one brass ensemble. The idea was to keep things flexible to allow for changing local conditions. The result, in any case, was a magnificent "question and answer" style of writing, in which great blocks of harmony challenged each other from opposite sides of San Marco Cathedral. If this sort of thing intrigues you, then you owe it to yourself to hear this terrific collection. It's a cosmic experience. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
Essential recording for every brass player.......2007-07-24
Antiphonal Masterpiece.......2007-05-16
The different groups played directed off the vocal and instrumental parts written by Gabrieli making any adjustment for transposition in their head on sight, thus allowing them all to be as much focused on the music as possible as they were not looking at 3rd generation arrangements which always tend to leave out markings. These possibly were the best brass performers in America at the time and their interpretations are unified through exceptional listening across the ensemble for intonation, style, and tempo. A slightly non-justifiable reason that I hold for this album's excellence is the raw energy and beauty of this unprepared collaboration. In the time of Gabrieli, rehearsals were rare, and musicians would, on a daily basis, sit down and perform music that they hadn't studied, and while these are not the original instruments for which Gabrieli wrote, the quick pacing of this production (one weekend) to me lends more on the positive side for the enjoyment of the listener.
In short, this is a remarkable collaboration of some of the best performers on fantastic Renaissance literature and worthy of owning merely for that fact, and when combined with live and engaging performances where the music is played expertly from one section to the next off of each individual, this album becomes a gem for anyone with an interest in the brass ensemble sound.

Sorry, but I think it's good!!!.......2005-12-17
Unlucky Number Or Not?I say the latter.......2005-11-18
That being said 'Chicago 13' actually contains more then handful of wonderful tunes.Sadly Donnie Dacus's 'Must've Been Crazy" isn't one of them-it's a yawn inducing rocker that's so pedestrian and unworthy of Chicago's normally funky jazz-rock style. If great rockers in their classic style is what you want then look no further then the driving "Window Dreamin'","Run Away",the almost arena worthy "Mama Take" and the equally impressive "Reruns",all sounding like vintage Chicago. On the softer side the gentle latin ballad "Life Is What It Is" is a sure fire should've been a hit-could've shared the same album with a song like "Just You N'Me".Same goes for the like-minded bonus cut "Closer To You".This album also has a couple jazzy funk tunes in "Paradise Alley" and the shuffling "Aloha Mama" for good measure.
All this makes this 1979 release only inessencial in and of itself is it's lack of big Top 40 pop hits.So if all your favorite songs are only the ones you hear on the radio (which sadly seems to account for about 99.5 % of the music loving public) then 'Chicago 13' might not be for you.But if your traveling in your car and you want something good in the CD player, pick this one.It flows very well from beginning to end and if you tend to be an album listener rather then into only the hit singles this will do fine!
Not The Best Not The Worst.......2005-08-20
"Looser With A Broken Heart" is my favorite track. "Must Have Been Crazy" is another pretty good track.
The only hit single "Street Player" is way too disco for me. The only reason this CD should be in your possession if you are a Chicago fan trying to complete your collection.
The Disco Album That Isn't.......2005-04-04
I think "13" is a better set than the previous year's HOT STREETS, but I also think that--as an attempt to update their classic jazz-rock sound--it suffers from the too-many-cooks syndrome. As with HOT STREETS, much of the blame has traditionally fallen on guitarist/vocalist Donnie Dacus. The single, "Must Have Been Crazy," is a Dacus tune, featuring his strained vocals and rhymes, and it's as bad a song as any Chicago's been associated with. Perhaps not coincidentally, CHICAGO 13 marks his departure from the group. But Dacus wasn't really as bad as many (including me) have said, and "13" doesn't sink or swim on his strengths and weaknesses.
"Street Player" is the opener. As the only overtly disco tune, it *is* famously lame, and even some monster horn lines and a guest appearance by famed trumpet master Maynard Ferguson can't save it. Still, one song with a disco-influence does not a disco album make, and "13" should not be unfairly categorized on the basis of "Street Player" alone.
Sadly lame, too, however, are Pete Cetera's "Mama Take," Bobby Lamm's "Paradise Alley," and Jimmy Pankow's "Runaway" (my vote for Jimmy's worst song--not something I write with joy, either).
There are some bright spots. Cetera groans convincingly on the bluesy "Aloha Mama." Lee Loughnane and Walt Parazaider contribute "Window Dreaming," the best tune on the CD by far (it even showcases a great Dacus guitar solo). "Loser With a Broken Heart" proves that not ALL Cetera ballads are bad. And percussionist Laudir de Oliveira makes his writing debut with the latin-influenced "Life Is What It Is," a nice surprise (though it features a surprisingly sub-par Pankow trombone solo--again, not written with any glee).
The Rhino remaster features two bonus tracks: the single edit of "Street Player," and a Dacus tune called "Closer to You" which blows "Must've Been Crazy" away (why wasn't THIS ONE picked instead?). The liner notes are briefer here than on previous Rhino re-releases; perhaps the band really had little to say.
All things considered, CHICAGO 13 undoubtedly documents a struggling group. While its reputation as a disco set is very much unwarrented, fans of the very early Chicago sound will likely be disappointed even today.
A Good Effort by Chicago.......2003-07-05
True, the disc, originally released in 1979 at the height of the disco era finds Chicago dipping into the disco idiom. However, aside from the opener, "Street Player", none of the album's other tracks have anything resembling a disco groove.
"Street Player" is really a great tune and should not be boxed into the term, "disco". The track features some excellent percussion tracks (with jazz artist Airto guest starring) and a hot trumpet solo (with jazz artist Maynard Ferguson also guest starring). Trombonist Jimmy Pankow's horn chart on "Street Player" stands as one of his best works as well on this tune written by drummer Danny Seraphine.
There are some excellent songs on "Chicago 13" including Bobby Lamm's snappy "Reruns", the uptempo latin-styled "Life is What It Is" (written by percussionist Laudir De Oliveira) and Jimmy Pankow's "Runaway".
The only problem with this recording is the production value. Following in the footsteps of 1978's "Hot Streets" (the band's first album without guitarist and founding member Terry Kath), the approach of producer Phil Ramone to recording this American superband just doesn't click. Like he did on "Hot Streets", Ramone again uses a lot of reverb on the recorded tracks, making the overall sound very thin. Also, the vocals do not involve a lot of harmony arrangement, thus, the classic Chicago vocal sound, so beautifully evident in their first nine studio recordings (produced by James William Guercio) is sorely missing.
"Chicago 13" is still a good album with a great deal of melody permeating the songwriting as we had come to expect from the group over the years. The performances are solid and the horns are in fine form.
The bonus track on this 2003 re-issue is the club mix of "Street Player", which is pretty cool.
A worthwhile purchase.

Fabulous bargain, but Berg needs texts!.......2006-02-05
But the budget price comes with a catch: No texts or librettos. (There are at least scene synopses for "Wozzeck" and "Lulu.") With some composers, this wouldn't be a serious problem, but Berg was one of the greatest control freaks in music history. Without knowing exactly where each word is placed, listeners who don't understand German will miss an important facet of this intricately multi-layered music.
Superb Berg performances ... good value!.......2006-01-05
Real Estate Saver.......2004-10-04
Not being particularly fond of lieder in general, I feel less qualified to make an educated call as to who might own which recordings of the songs other than to remark that I already own this recording of Op. 2 (which, of course includes the lyrics). In fact, as is the case with a previous reviewer, I already own a number of recordings from this set (which I received as a gift). No matter, it's still worth owning, and I agree with yet another reviewer's suggestion to grab it while it's available. True, one might prefer different performances here or there but honestly, this affords the best way of acquiring everything in one fell swoop, and there's not a clinker in the whole set.
In that vein, I might suggest that fans of the VC seek out Szeryng's performance with Kubelik, now available remastered on DG Eloquence at budget price. It's much less emotional than Mutter's beautiful reading but I find this proves an enhancement rather than a detraction; I also feel that Kubelik, possibly due to his Austro-Hungarian upbringing, ultimately has a better grasp of this repertoire than Levine (although I love his OOP Lulu Suite/Wozzeck excerpts on Sony and Mahler 4 on RCA).
Best Set; Good Price..........2004-05-11
Excellent collection.......2004-04-06
This is 8-CD set and includes the complete works of Berg on acclaimed performances.
Especially, the stars of this set (for me):
Wozzeck (Hildegard Behrens, Wiener Philharmoniker, Abbado)
Lulu, complete opera in 3 act (Teresa Stratas, Franz Mazura, Yvonne Minton, Jules Bastin, Robert Tear, Opera National de Paris, Pierre Boulez!!)
Lulu-Suite (London SO, Abbado)
Three Pieces for Orchestra (London SO, Abbado)
Piano Sonata (Daniel Barenboim)
Alban Berg's musical language is difficult to understand (at least in first listening), but when listening more times, we notice that, actually in his music, there is a very mystic or impressive and lyric atmosphere. So, I think that he is a "Romantic" modern. Just, he expressed these lyric atmospheres with realist and striking language. Still, he was used 12-tone system, but he was not forget tonality and used the both styles (even so he used jazz passages, especially in Lulu). In other words: Berg is one of the most famous and important composers and he impressed the composers came after him (ex. Shostakovich, Britten, Henze)
This is an essential collection and highly recommended.

Pierre Boulez has recorded all of this music before, and very successfully. Those recordings are available at mid-price on Sony, and though the recorded sound is a bit better on these newer discs, you can't really go wrong either way. Boulez has always brought a special measure of incisiveness and clarity to Bartók, sometimes at the cost of a certain emotional warmth--but that's not a criticism that applies to this pair of immaculately played performances. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra knows this music as well as any orchestra in the world, and its chorus is one of the country's finest. So if the coupling appeals to you, go for it! --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:

Boulez conducting is clear in all the pieces, specially in the Wooden Prince and the orchestral playing is really breathtaking, something outstanding, ideal for Bartók's music, in which they have a long-term relation, as you can listen in his previous recordings with Reiner, Abbado or Solti.
The Cantata Profana is marvellous too, singers, chorus and orchestra give them best to build a marvellous tale, full of colour and mistery, as the Cantata is a hermetic piece in fact. I've listened this work in Solti's hands and of course it could be a bit more idiomatic and folk, more hungarian, but even so, Boulez's version is marvellous, specially from the technical point of view.
The recording is amazing, I think this CD was Grammy for the technical recording, there's no doubt about the recording quality, it's clear, well-balanced, great range of dynamics, very well recorded all the orchestral sections...
In my opinion a CD which is a must be for all Bartók's lovers. Nowadays this CD it's out of DG's catalogue, so don't miss this oportunity.
A fantastic set!.......2005-11-03
A golden album. Absolutely recommended.
Boulez conducting Bartok's "Cantata Profana".......2000-08-19
"The Wooden Prince" is pretty fine too, even though this is the only recording I heard so far. But Boulez is good enough.
If you want Bartok, I believe that you should buy Boulez, from Grammophon. There's a collection of Bartok's music conducted by Boulez.
Boulez good........2000-02-11

An eye-opening Prokofiev survey (try to buy it used).......2006-03-26
As I listened straight through, I was surprised at how unacquainted I actually was with the wide extent of Prokofiev's style. From the very early "Dreams," which could be mistaken for Glazunov through the unfamiliar operas (Betrothal in a Monastery Garden, Semyon Kotko) to the final, sadly diminished works like the Seventh Sym. and the cello concerto, the composer covered every major Russian style of the century. I didn't find any new masterful performances--not that a short excerpt is a good enough trial--but everything here is well performced. Any listener should find something unexpected and intriguing in this two-and-a-half-hour traversal.
