2 out of 5 stars It dawned on me.............2006-10-13

I heard It Dawned On Me over the radio and I liked the song but listening to the clips, it dawned on me how terrible this album is! Aside from It Dawmed On Me, the only acceptable song is Initiate which reminds me of Coldplay, the rest is plain filler. Therefore buy the CD if It Dawned On Me caught your fancy otherwise forget it.

5 out of 5 stars Solid CD from a solid band........2006-03-02

I've liked Calla ever since I first listened to 'em a few years ago, and didn't even know this CD came out until... last week. Very impressive everything, as usual. The vocals are amazing, the musicianship is interesting, and the lyrics that I actually understand are good.

This Better Go As Planned and Swagger are the best songs (in my opinion), though the opening track is fairly good as well. Goooooood stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Calla is to indie what Radiohead is to POP.......2006-01-03

For anyone who is sick of the same old indie bands getting praise for the wrong reasons (where they're from, who signed them, who they sound like, or how long the song titles are), please let me introduce you to Calla.

Yes, it's true, their sound has changed tremendously since Scavengers or their earlier EP's. They are no longer an experimental band. Though, I don't think they have "sold out" as much as they have just found their sound. They got really close on their last album "Televise," and I think they knew which direction to head towards. These songs may be more rounded in a pop sense, but they are still extremely original and impressive. For anyone who loves lushy 80's brit-pop or mellow indie, this is pretty much your new favorite album.

4 out of 5 stars Mood music.......2005-12-26

Moody and atmospheric indie rock is perhaps an overused description but it does give us a starting point when talking about Calla. Because this disc defiantly has "mood" to spare. But where previous discs have stayed more moody Collisions breaks out a bit and brings more pop sensibilities into the mix. The best example of this is the opening track "It Dawned On Me," a great song with smooth sounds and a catchy jangle of guitar that would make Echo and the Bunnymen proud. But just when you think Calla has completely changed their sound "Initiate" begins with a droning heavy bass that slides along under the raspy vocals of Aurelio Valle singing "That's not how it's suppos'd to be, it's the last time I'll be on my knees." The bass continues to be prominent and heavy as the vocals fade to near whispers on "This Better Go As Planned." Offsetting all this heaviness is a lilting guitar that adds just enough light to help keep the song melodic amid all the grinding bass. And then a beautiful keyboard melody fades in to end the track, perfectly done. Great little guitar and keyboard effects are everywhere, lifting the mood at just the right time or adding a little texture. The guitars seem to scratch at the songs, never tearing into them but just "there" at the edges. On "Pulverized" there is a howling kind of effect like wind blowing through cracks that is just amazing. All the while the lyrics plead "Just forget it, I'll regret it...Forget every word that I said that you heard." By the time we work our way to "Testify" and "Swagger" (tracks 9 and 10) the band is in full on rock mode with hard rifts and screaming guitar effects swirling all around, very cool. The whole disc seems to build to this conclusion of power and sound. But in the end "Overshadowed" brings us back to the sounds that are slower and quiet, then build and grows and grinds itself into a final frenzy. At first listen you might miss how good this disc really is. Give it a chance and it will grow on you. The little touches of melody and the great pop hooks will replay themselves in your head over and over.

1 out of 5 stars They call this an ALBUM?.......2005-12-04

"It Dawned On Me" is the only real song on the entire CD worthy of any attention. It's a solid rock song, trendy yet it's the kind of song that can get any band some attention.
However, I wonder about the talents of this group when I listen to the rest of the CD - made me seriously doubt their song writing abilities - the rest of the CD sound like a bunch of below-standard B-sides thrown together just to make up a whole CD. The rest of the songs from 2 through 8 sound so much alike that I can't really distinguish one from the other, they're all monotoned and boring songs that have none of the rock feel of the first.

I was seriously disappointed. I won't give any stars for this (but I since I have to I'm giving it 1), since I can't believe that the band members would honestly think this is their best effort for a whole new CD. Compared to new ones by bands like Nada Surf and Discover America, this Calla CD is terrible.

5 out of 5 stars A triumphant new album from a great band.......2007-02-28

I won't write a huge review, but I do want to say that after repeated listens I find that this album is pleasantly fantastic. Calla is really going in a new, more poppy direction with this album, and ends up with one of the best albums they've made. The first track, "Sanctify," is kind of disappointingly grungy and hard for me to listen to, but the rest of the album is made up of very smart and delicately constructed but relentlessly driving songs. "Defenses Down," "Rise," and "Dancers in the Dust" are all standout tracks, but overall this is a very strong album.

This album is better than their previous album "Collisions" but about as good as their masterpieces "Televised" and "Scavengers." I heartily recommend this album. Again, they're going in a new direction with these tracks, but it's a good direction.

Calla's debut album was a striking blend of gutbucket riffs and sonic abstraction, standard rock instrumentation and electronic programming, big guitars and subtle ambient detailing. Scavengers, the New York-based threesome's second CD, is less intriguing than the first disc, but it's still compelling. Calla certainly craft fine melodies but their first concern seems to be sound itself. Guitarist Aurelio Valle, whose playing draws from dirty blues and Morricone soundtracks, is a master of tone and inflection. He can animate the simplest guitar parts with subtle inflections. That's one reason the group can pull off something like "Hover over Nowhere," a track in which the song gets left behind, only to be followed by a lovely and lengthy coda. Layering vocals on top of catchy guitar, "Tijerina" displays the group's taste for dramatic grandeur. Scavengers (which was coproduced by Michael Gira) is a solid variation on the band's first CD. It'll be interesting to see where the group goes from here. --Fred Cisterna

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Storm.......2002-08-06

With all that is mundane in a senseless music industry there comes a time when a album comes about that makes one sit down and listen, listen to it for what it's worth. Every cling of the guitar, swoosh of atmosphere pushed out by methodical drummming, bass lines that bleed narcotics, and a voice that could gently whisper you pains which, till then, you never knew existed. All this is intrinsic to this album with nothing more and nothing less. This album is good and the music is stunning to the point in which I asked myself "What is this other stuff I've been listening to?"... :)

5 out of 5 stars Elcellent mellowing-out album.......2002-05-19

This is a great ablum. I've had it for a couple of months and have listened to it probably at least 20 times. My favorite tracks are #1 and #4, although there's not a bad song on it. It's kind of hard for me to describe what Calla sound like. Reading the other reviews I just found out that one of the guys was from Bowery Electric (a group I really liked), and you can hear some of B.E. in Calla. It's good music for when you feel emotionally or physically run down or just want to chill out. It's a bit like Low in that the style is really loose and sometimes elegantly sparse. It also reminds me a bit of Godspeed You Black Emperor, Mira and for some reason Massive Attack.

2 out of 5 stars a lot of pretense and very little sincerity.......2001-07-05

even after listening to this cd 3 times, as suggested by the previous reviewer, i still didnt like it at all. al this brooding, whispering, semi-gothic pretense started to irritate me after a while. so i turned to the black heart procession for some consolation.... their 3 cd's give me exactly what i wanted to get from calla: genuine heartbreaking, chilling, music that stays with you for a long time. calla failed to provide these qualities

5 out of 5 stars Low Key Metamorphosis.......2001-03-16

What sets Calla apart from other brooding post-rock outfits (Idaho, Red House Painters, Low et al) is not so much the arrangements, instrumentation or the presentation of their material, but rather the way in which their songs are structured. Beyond the verse-chorus concept lies a gradual shift in theme and mood, drifting in and out of more abstract instrumental passages. This is a much more subtle take on the cut-and-paste ethic which contemporary culture has embraced over the last decade or two: time-stretched and layered instead of the more jarring and schizophrenic methods employed to date. Although superbly textured, on first listen this album may well sound featureless and indistinct, but a little perseverance reveals a refreshingly different pop sensibility, one which brings to mind the finest moments of The Velvet Underground.

5 out of 5 stars I saw these guys live too...........2005-05-03

As soon as I get some cash I will be buying this album. Like most of the othe reviewers I saw them open for another band, The French Kicks. These dudes were awesome. I happened to be stoned at the time so I listned to them again on their website to make sure. Yep, I'm sure now that these guys are awesome. And if they open for a slightly more popular band in a town near you dont hestitate and go early. Try to get wasted. Which is easier if you go early.

5 out of 5 stars I love this band and their music!.......2005-03-19

I saw this band open for Ambulance ltd about two days ago and their live performance blew me away. Their music is very relaxing and nice. the song Televised sounded very good in person because the guitar solo was louder and nicer. The band is very nice too because I took a picture with the bassist and stood by the singer when The French Kicks were playing. I strongly recommend this CD if you like Mogwai, Interpol, or Explosions in the Sky. It's a great CD to have in your book.

4 out of 5 stars Rainy day, dusk descending.......2004-07-08

"Televise" was my introduction to Calla (though it's the band's third album), and what a first impression it made on me.

Based in New York City, Calla prove that not every band from NYC are riding the post-punk wave to the riches on the shore. This album employs spiky guitars and atmosperics to provide a dense and dark listening experience.

Opener 'Strangler' follows typical song structures combined with downright scary lyrics, but the rest of the album is more experimental. 'Monument' is sparse, which makes its haunting guitar line that much more efficatious. 'Don't Hold Your Breath' moves in with the chilling lyric 'This day is dead' and the vocal is briefly offset by a bright and chirpy guitar segment before squalling darkness comes along and casts a pall over the end of the song, and 'Pete the Killer' is an atmospheric highlight along the lines of a quiet MBV moment, and its held together by a simple-yet-effective (and unforgettable) bass line.

'Customized' starts the second half of the album, "Televised's" most potent set of songs. 'Customized' doesn't sound like anything memorable at first, but upon repeated listens the slithering guitar, howling atmospherics and distant lyrics make it a darkly satisfying masterpiece.

'As Quick as it Comes/Carrera' starts as a nearly silent ballad and ambles along for two minutes before the band builds the song to an unforgettable crescendo that could be a quieter, more refined and reigned-in Godspeed You Black Emperor song or Low if that band stretched out a little bit more. It is certainly one of the albums highlights, and after 'Alacran's' instrumental atmospherics blow by, 'Televise' comes along as one of the albums two towering masterpieces. It starts off with a skittering drum beat and funky strut before ice-cold guitar rises to the surface and flips the song upside down. After the lyrics cut out just over two minutes into the song, the guitar morphs into a Spector-ish wall of sound, fades away to silence before coming back like an avalanche down a sun-baked mountain.

Calla have crafted a memorable, if not dark and atmospheric, album that at first sounds too basic to be enthralling, but upon repeated spins the listener is rewarded with new facets of musicianship. It's like crawling into your bed at night - you know it's familiar but it takes a few moments to find the comfort zone. "Televised" won't blow you over the first time, but each successive listen is a reward unto itself. If atmospheric music is your bag, fill it with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying.......2003-11-10

This is the perfect CD to listen to when you're driving country roads at night under a full moon. It rocks, yes, but it also sets up a mood where the individual songs don't stand out as much as the entire album creates the kind of atmosphere that could make it the soundtrack to your life. It reminds me of one of my favorite CDs, the Doves' "Lost Souls" which has these same qualities and is almost symphonic in its effect.

3 out of 5 stars Underground gem.......2003-08-28

Calla are an emerging New York band (though this is their third album) specialising in slow drone-rock, dark textures and understated, atmospheric vocals. Its nearest comparison and most obvious is Interpol - indeed, friends of Calla - but where Interpol incorporate a touch of faster, Strokes-y protopunk to their faster tracks, Calla owe debts to different sectors too. The vocal stylings between the two bands are different too - in Interpol they are harsh and howling, in Calla they are hushed and morose.

The album is close to Interpol in mood but borrows its atmospherics and flickering guitars from Up-era REM, and on 'As Quick As It Comes', the chiming guitars build steadily to a cacophonious climax in the vein of Mogwai or others of their post-rock contempories. Yet there's even a sense of funk in the sharp guitar work on 'Strangler' and album highlight 'Televised' which is near perfect. Other tracks are more acoustic, 'Monument' is beautifully sparse and 'Surface Scratch' is an understatedly heartbreaking closer.

Admittedly the middle of the album does at times seem repetitive and to mark little departure from the overall sound as the album moves from track to track, but this is only true to the drone-rock ideal where the tracks incorporate one moody whole. This band have serious potential and Televise is an underground gem well worth investigating.

5 out of 5 stars stark and stately.......2005-10-15

Calla is a trio from New York (originally, Texas) that plays a softly hallucinated music reminiscent of Ry Cooder's soundtracks and Red House Painters. Singer Aurelio Valle, "programmers" Wayne Magruder (a former Bowery Electric) and keyboardist Sean Donovan sculpted shadowy melodies that slowly crept out of their fragile envelope. The ambience of Calla (Sub Rosa, 1999 - Arena Rock, 2004) is stark and stately. Its funereal dirges are mostly content of repeating their own spleen. The mood is framed by the Calexico-ain psychedelic drowsiness of the instrumental opener, Tarentula , and amplified by the depressed psychedelia of other instrumentals: Truth About Robots , with its shrieking guitar, June, with its wavering electronic hiss, lazy syncopated drums and pointless guitar doodling, not to mention Keyes, that pares down the concept to a sustained dissonance and distant drums.
Among real "songs", the gentle lullaby Elsewhere is the catchier and warmer, followed by the pseudo-calypso of Trinidad. The semi-tribal, twangy, sleepy Custom Car Crash finds an unlikely compromise between Ennio Morricone and Tom Waits. Only Drowning Men, after a four-minute instrumental overture of sketchy guitar tones and looping electronic patterns, moans a few slow, bluesy lines while the guitar erects a wall of noise a` la Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man.

1 out of 5 stars Sparse, but effective........2004-02-16

Not as lush, or as many lyrics to be found here as in other Calla releases. Wasn't entirely certain what this would sound like, and was a little surprised by it. More elctronic drums and noises; very very sparse arrangments of guitars/bass; and the drums barely keep a rhythm. Maybe after a bottle of cough syrup night time formula and a nice cosy hot bath, this might just hit the spot but as a casual listen it almost becomes musical wall paper, and certainly isn't recommended as driving music (where as Scavengers and moreso Televised are).

Hmm, sounds a tad negative, well not really it's a good record and stands up well in amongst my other Calla records, you can tell it was a band with plenty of good ideas, and a real sense of space, so I fully recommend it especially at a reduced price and with the addition of bonus live material.

D-Shot has some of the illest trackst ever recorded to date, one of the most under-rated rappers of all time. D-Shot takes you on a adventure full of hard chocolate battering rams, deep dark caverns, toothless whores, and Harley Davidsons. If you like rap, and don't own this album, buy it NOW. If you already own this album, smash it in your mothers face, and buy a new one. PEACE..

5 out of 5 stars ...excellent example of TRUE bay area rap..........1999-12-08

this album is a classic...every track will have you jumping...it will become necessary for you to try and learn all of the words...this is definitely d-shot's best album...i highly recommend this cd...peace

5 out of 5 stars Awesome debut by D-Shot .......1999-10-31

This album is just amazing and you can't believe it's from 1992. Sick Wid it released a perfect album. D-Shot is such a tight rapper, and with the help of some label inmates and mighty producer Studio Ton he drops a perfect album. It's pretty short but it's WAY BETTER than those 20 plus track albums they deliver these days. A perfect album you just press PLAY and listen to every single song on this album. An album you'll really enjoy listening too, it's gangsta hardcore rap but most of it is some playa s**t, what D-Shot knows best. Shot Calla is a "old" album, but it was really ahead of its time when it was released and you get to hear a Sick Wid It Record before the label got distributed by Jive nationwide. It IS a classic, and any West Coast rap fan should get it. For those who don't know - D-Shot, together with his brother E-40 and their crew The Click, is one of the first ones to get into the independent game. After Sick Wid It's success, many rappers (especially from the Bay Area) followed their lead and made themselves a lot of money. Just don't forget where it all started.

5 out of 5 stars Very strong compilation well worth owning.......2006-06-03

These soul compilations are always a crapshoot. One never knows whether or not the disc will have enough gems to bear repeated listening. This disc has only grown on me since I bought it a few months ago. It is one of the better soul comps from this time period that I have heard and I recommend it to those with a broad taste for soul.
Highlights for me include the Betty LaVette tracks (which I have not seen elsewhere), the two tracks by J.J. Jackson, and the tracks by the Sandpebbles, especially "Forget It." Roscoe Gordon's recording of the blues classic "Just a little bit" is not the the best known version of this tune, but he is the composer and so this is the original (although it seems a bit out of place stylistically on this compilation). There are a lot of fine tracks on this CD. I am writing only to help my fellow soul enthusiasts sort through the massive number of soul compilations. I would give it four and a half stars. Enjoy!
