5 out of 5 stars Superb Kiki Compilation.......2007-06-30

I bought this CD years ago, and it is an excellent CD containing the hits and many highlights of Kiki Dee's career in the 70's. Lots of songs on here, and even several of her 60's recordings, which sound great on CD.

Kiki is very underrated as a singer & songwriter. She can sing rockers like I'VE GOT THE MUSIC IN ME, STEP BY STEP, ONE JUMP AHEAD OF THE STORM, and ballads with ease. This compilation CD is certainly worthy of owning. The 60's songs WHY DON'T I RUN AWAY FROM YOU and RUNNING OUT OF FOOLS are worth hearing ... rare singles from 1966 that illustrate Kiki's abilities singing r&b with that big voice when she was just a kid. Plus, includes an alternate take of album favorite YOU NEED HELP.

Wonderful & highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars awsome.......2006-06-18

I purchased this greatest hits cd because of the song "I got the music in me". I expected to like maybe a few songs from this collection......I was wrong. The whole cd is excellent. Kiki is a superior vocalist with excellent back-up band. A combination of Jass Rock Blues.

3 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2006-03-08

I have the original ROCKET vinyl album of I've got the Music In Me...I bought this CD for TWO SONGS and ONLY two songs..."Step by Step" and "You Need Help"...the second song is a different version than I am used to on vinyl. Maybe this is a British version of something, but it's very disappointing to me. Other than that, it's nice to have some Kiki on CD.

3 out of 5 stars Kiki Dee & Elton John at their Best!.......2005-09-13

I do not have either this CD (Amoureuse) or the original LP in my collection; but I do have the LP, Loving and Free, produced by Elton John and Clive Franks, purchased sometime in the middle 1970s. While I am neither a Kiki Dee fan, nor highly knowledgable on pop music, I personally consider Loving and Free to be one of the very best albums by a female vocalist in the 1970 - 80s. Elton John's contributions herein, including arrangements and production, are considerable - Kiki Dee, while extremely talented as a singer - songwriter, never matched the collaborations with Elton John, apart or own her own. But, again in my opinion, Elton John never had a whole album as good as, Loving and Free. The two were a dynamite combination.

It's most unfortunate that Loving and Free is not available to the general CD buying public - but it's well worth your time and effort to find the album's music somewhere on the internet to download, and to listen to it. My only negative feelings about Loving and Free are that it could be more upbeat throughout - but both love and love songs can sometimes reflect sad, bittersweet experiences.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2005-07-28

I bought this CD for the song "I've Got The Music In Me" and was very pleasantly surprised at the consistent high quality and listenability of all the songs on it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recordings with a twist.......2006-08-03

This CD is full of jazz in spite of the fact that I have associated most of the performers with classical music. This shows the diversity in their ability to perform a wide array of music that I never heard in the past from them.

If you like jazz without too much dissonance, this is a great CD to purchase. The interesting and awkward rhythms are the best parts of this CD.

You can have your own party just from listening to this music.

5 out of 5 stars Bolling holds a swinging party & I won't leave.......2001-04-29

I had this CD around and was going to put it up for sale via Amazon Marketplace. I listen to other Bolling CDs. But, somehow I had "missed" the jivvy jazz in this recording.

As the sounds of "Baroque and Blue," 5:15, Track 1 started playing, the thoughts of selling the CD disappeared.

Bolling plays the piano superbly and Maurice Andre's trumpet radiates pure jazz notes. This is a clasical jazz CD. The 12 tracks tie together like movements of a symphony and there is a bewitching common theme, best heard in track 7 "Mystique." After Andre and Bolling swing in #7, track 8 "Canon," emerges with Jean Pierre Rampal's flute, golden. Guy Pedersen's string bass is crisp and Daniel Humair plays the drums with unhearlded pizzaz. And, how can one overlook the strumming of guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?

This is one of the best jazz or instrumental CDs I have ever heard. I normally listen while writing and use the sounds as background music. Lagoya's contribution to #9, Tendre, matching Rampal's clarity is mystical. So, I am enjoying each note and marveling at the classical synergy displayed.

The cover notes cite "recipes from Martha Stewart's "Entertaining" and her other best-selling books on food and lifestyle." Sure enough, Martha has a menu: 1. Cocktails & Sparkling Water...the CD's sounds sparkle. 2. Crudites with Anchovy Mayonnaise, complete with the recipe. 3. Chicken on Skewers, also including what to use & how. 4. Prosciutto and Figs: Anyone can lay this dish out. 5. Cornmeal-Fried Oysters: The recipe is for 2 dozen.

So, a person can buy this album (just) to get great recipes for dishes to accompany superb jazz. The recipes are simple to follow and delicious to read. One can buy the CD for the delightful cocktails that Bolling presents. But here "one = two." Or, to put this in other words "With two you get eggroll." The eggroll is the delightful dish one savors listening to the music while nibbling on the chicken & oysters. Magnifique!

4 out of 5 stars ORDER AND BEAUTY.......2006-08-30

Duparc composed little and published less. The 17 songs with piano (including one duet) that we have on this disc - just over one hour of music - constitute virtually all he chose to leave us as a musical legacy after more than 80 years of life. Some of the poets he set are familiar names - Baudelaire, Gautier, Sully-Prudhomme, Leconte de Lisle, one translation from Goethe - but three of the 17 are by one Jean Lahor. What they have as a common theme is a sense of incapacity to deal with mundane life, this manifested in the earlier poems as an escape into fantasy and dreams, lapsing into lonely sadness in the later. Whether the poetry of Lahor is of `middling quality', in the supercilious phrase of the liner-note writer, I wouldn't be knowing. My own French has no difficulty with understanding the literal meaning of anything here, and it is probably up to recognising the stature of Baudelaire, but whether it is good enough to pass such judgments on the plain and innocent-seeming verses of Lahor I am not so sure. It seems to me that a native speaker of French might miss the magic behind the simple diction of Housman, and what I seem to find in Lahor is at least a patent and fragile sincerity.

This poetry is set to a music of exquisite refinement and poise. There is clear influence from Wagner in one or two ways, particularly in some of the more vigorous accompaniments and probably also in the almost total avoidance of word-repetition, but the very French sense of atmosphere is as strong as it is in Debussy, and the vocal lines combine a Wagnerian flexibility with a delicate lyricism that recalls Berlioz. Duparc was also an outright perfectionist, and perfectionism is catching. It infects even such a slattern as I am myself when I listen to these fine-spun little masterpieces, and it seems to me that nothing less than total perfection in their performance can do them full justice.

What I find in this recital is total perfection from Thomas Allen, but only excellence from Sarah Walker and Roger Vignoles. They all show thorough understanding of this music, and they convey their understanding with both power when required and discretion, which is always required. I could probably ask for nothing more by way of insight into the soul of the works. Where I find something slightly lacking is at a more mundane level. Apart from a couple of slightly uneasy high notes, Sarah Walker's technical command is assured, and I feel more than a little ungallant in saying crudely that her voice is not quite what is needed for Duparc - it is just slightly ordinary, and her French is not as good as Allen's either. As the recital progressed I longed more and more for Veronique Gens, whose memorable Berlioz Nuits d'Ete came back forcefully into my mind. As for the accompaniment, it calls for the highest praise in its mastery of the idiom and style (which are more varied than you might expect). Vignoles catches the special and elusive atmosphere of this special and elusive composer with genuine and deep insight, and there is real and impressive power in the later sequences of the last song of all. However the shortcomings - slight but in this context very telling - are once again at a more humdrum level. The touch needs to be the last word in the `order, beauty, comfort, peace and pleasure' that Baudelaire himself yearns for in `L'Invitation au Voyage'. In particular the frequent tremolando sequences call for superhuman evenness, and when I ask myself `Who do I want to be doing this?' the answer that comes to me is as much a fantasy as anything in the poems - I want Michelangeli.

For some reason credits are given in the liner to the translators of only three of the poems. I can think of no reason for this discrimination, and all the translations are in my own opinion excellent. I spotted no misprints in either English or French, unless Baudelaire's `ciels', which Lahor and I thought was `cieux', is one of those and not his divine afflatus as I am assuming. The liner-note itself is businesslike and informative, and the recorded quality gives me no grounds for criticism. This is a fine production, and whether or not I have laboured my reservations unduly I recommend it cordially. Perfection was what I had wanted. It is not quite what I have got, but I have got a great deal nonetheless, and it may be a long time before I am given as much again.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2002-08-23

The music of Duparc is as intense, layered, complex, and as emotional as the man who wrote it - who in fact, drove himself mad in the process. To convey this music effectively, a journey must be taken by the vocalist and the pianist into rich text and engulfing harmonies, without drowning in over analysis & self indulgence. There is a foreboding sense of secret, or the opening of a private self, and a great vulnerability and tenderness in this music. Here, the vocalists Allen & Walker, present immaculate readings of these 17 works, along with the supreme artisty of Vignoles. These recorded pieces are such exquisite duets between voice and piano that they leave you in rapture. Walker's mellifluous "Extase" with it's Wagnerian, lush accompaniment is impeccable and haunting. Allen opens his soul, along with those of the poet and composer, in "Soupir" - laden with all the angst of unrequited love. Both he and Vignoles transport their listener heavenward on soft stardust in their intimate "Serenade Florentine". This is divinely inspired music. Honest. Unpretentious. Transcendental.

5 out of 5 stars Bolling's Greatest Hits.......2007-05-13

If you haven't heard Claude Bolling's music, this is the CD you want to buy first. Not only does it have the best tunes of all his CDs each tune shows which CD it came from.

I love playing a Bolling tune and asking a friend is this Classical or Jazz? They'll always say it sounds like Classical and then it shifts to Jazz. Everyone that has heard his CDs goes out and buys it.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Jazz.......2006-03-08

A clever and talentous work on the pulse of jazz, mixing it with classical music.

4 out of 5 stars A Flutist's Intro to Bolling.......2002-10-20

Get this cd if you want to hear Bolling's works for flute before deciding if you would like to perform them. A great cd overall, maybe another brave flutist would like to redo these works? Although the late Jean-Pierre Rampal was known for doing 'the Picnic Suite' and 'Suite For Flute and Piano' I would like to add another artist to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Artist's & Bolling Compositions.......2001-05-01

Seems as here exhibited that the best of classical and jazz do have an area of union. Bolling combined the two by writing his suite for Flue and Jazz Piano, as well as these others for the specific performers.

How about writing a piece just for Jean-Pierre Rampal and Yo-Yo Ma?

Favorites include Baroque and Blue, Baroque in Rhythm and Rag-Polka.

This is music of a different sort, but most enjoyable. Bravo, Claude!

5 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great CD........2000-10-06

This is a collection of some great Claude Bolling pieces, including one of my favorites on track 4. If Bolling's style appeals to you, or if you are just looking for some good clever jazz, go for this. It's quite different, and it's good.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable compendium.......2007-01-24

This set is extremely valuable, not only as an overview of Dame Joans career but because it contains three complete LP sets that have been very hard to find. The sets are the 2 LP French opera (operetta) set, the Mozart album and the Wagner album. Although some of these do not show her to her best advantage (the Wagner set) they all have some very beautiful things and the French items are superb. The annotations and photos are interesting as well and there are some piano songs with Bonynge that are released here for the first time along with a scene from a live Covent Garden Norma.

While Joan Sutherland has recorded a number of impressive aria collections throughout the many years of her recording career, they tend to get lost in the shuffle of the countless reissues Decca/London has endlessly repackaged. While some of the original collections have appeared intact on CD--"The Art of the Prima Donna," "The Age of Bel Canto," "Love Live Forever" (her operetta collection that was originally titled "The Golden Age of Operetta"), to name a few--others are currently represented in the CD catalogue by only a few selections on discs that also include excerpts from complete opera recordings or duplicates of selections from other original collections. As a result, it has been impossible to assemble a CD collection of her recordings without a LOT of duplication, and some of the most interesting collections are still unavailable (e.g. "Command Performance" and "Serate Musicale").

While this newest set does include a lot of bits of this and that, ranging from her very first LPs to excerpts from complete recordings most Sutherland fans already have and a few "live" performances, what is perhaps most significant about it is that it features the complete contents of the "Sutherland Sings Wagner" LP--a real repertoire departure for her--and the double-LP album called "French Opera Gala" (in the U.S.--the British title was "Romantic French Arias"), neither of which, to the best of my knowledge, has been available on CD before. "Opera News" magazine once ran an article in which they asked various stars to name the one album that they felt best represented their artistry for future generations, and Dame Joan selected the "French Opera Gala," so for Sutherland fans, this is a long-awaited treat.

I'm not going to waste space saying how miraculous I consider Dame Joan's artistry. If you are familiar with her work already, you know whether you adore her or not; and if you aren't, this massive set is probably not the best place to start (that would be "The Art of the Prima Donna" album that introduced her to most listeners decades ago)--especially since this newest set doesn't contain the lyrics, a must for newcomers. Let's hope Decca/London gets around to releasing the rest of her recordings intact instead of endlessly scrambling and repackaging the same selections over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2006-01-31

I first heard of Dame Sutherland while on the internet while listening to a internet radio station. I was instantly a fan, her control, technique, and tone is perfectly executed and rivals the equally fantastic Maria Callas. She has a powerful voice and presence that will evoke every emotion from her listeners. Highly recommended to all Opera Diva fans.

5 out of 5 stars WHO ELSE CAN SING LIKE THIS TODAY?.......2005-04-10

This is Decca's second multi disc evaluation of this fantastic singer's long career and many recordings. True that a lot on the first set is duplicated here, but there are a few exceptions here and there that make it a worthy addition. Of particular interest are the very early items of Handel and Italian baroque arias, some forgotten song recordings and a live performance of the duet from Norma. It can't be said too many times - who can sing like this today? For sheer vocalism it's hard to find anyone on the same wavelength. This set will give very young opera goers an idea of what they missed.

    Album Description

In a relatively short career as a composer, curtailed by illness, Henri Duparc left a small group of songs that have since proved a major part of French song repertoire. The songs for tenor and piano recorded on this disc are notable for their poetic atmosphere, emotional intensity and exquisite technique. Highlights include L'invitation au voyage, set to words by Baudelaire and perhaps Duparc's best known song, the deeply felt Elégie, the dramatic Le manoir de Rosemonde, with its haunted search, and the harmonically adventurous Chanson triste.

4 out of 5 stars Before Pons there was Galli-Curci.......2007-02-21

Lily Pons was a reigning diva at the Metropolitan opera starting in the 1930s. She was deemed to be the natural successor to Amelita Galli-Curci. This CD does a nice job of representing the repertoire of Galli-Curci. While the recording quality is not great, it compares well with other records of the late 19 teens and 1920s.

First, a brief reaction to some of the pieces on this CD.

"Una voce poco fa" from Rossini's "Il Barbiere de Siviglia," demonstrates Galli-Curci's agile voice. The cabaletta shows Galli-Curci's coloratura technique, with good ornamentation.

She shows an agile voice, too, in Meyerbeer's "Ombra leggiera." I would rate this as a good (if not great) version. She shows an adequate trill; the trajectory of this piece is such that the close is the most satisfying component of the cut. She floated a very nice high note at the end.

Bellini's estimable I Puritani features a classic aria-cabaletta: "Qui la voce. . .Vien diletto." In the cabaletta, she shows nice technique at the start. Her approach is somewhat different from sopranos from the past several decades. The shows a nice trill at the conclusion and a very well done high note.

Verdi's "La Traviata" features many attractive pieces for sopranos. One of the real showpieces is "Sempre libera." Galli-Curci provides some nice characterization. Her version is fast paced, she shows good vocal control, her runs are well done, and her florid technique is fine. Again, an adequate trill and good final high note.

The cabaletta from the "Mad Scene" from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," "Spargi d'amaro pianto," is more vanilla than most recent versions. The first run through is melodic and fine, with nice runs. The repeat features no trills, although the level of ornamentation is greater. A not very exciting version.

Second, this is a welcome introduction to the specialties in Amelita Galli-Curci's repertoire. Given the technology of the time, one gets a good sense of her voice. She sings well, although I think that her coloratura technique is a little spare (perhaps a matter of taste and evolving views of the proper technique for the Bel canto repertoire).

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-01-11

This wonderful artist has always touched my heart, and this is an exceptional recording.

5 out of 5 stars A good Old Time recording.......2003-10-08

I've borrowed this Cd from the library and I was greatly impressed by this coloratura. Her register is even. Songs are beautifully sung with impeccable taste. Her voice is clear and as beautiful as a bird (in a good way). Though these arias were record in the 1920's the hisses are minimal. I had no problem listening to it. I've listen to other coloraturas, J. Sutherland, B. Sills, Sumi Jo, N. Dessay, E. Gruberova, and yes even N. Melba, yet this is still one of my favorite CD for coloratura. Maybe it is her extremely flexibility, lightness, or freshness. Whatever the reason, I have enjoyed this CD and have just ordered it. It should an inclusion for any soprano recital collection

This is the second, and the lesser, volume of pianist Joanne Polk's Amy Beach series. It includes a couple of fairly substantial pieces, the Prelude and Fugue and the Ballade, along with a collection of the relatively trivial music that made up most of the piano works of Beach and her contemporaries. Her chamber music includes some hefty pieces that show her at her best, but most of this music shows her fitting in with her era. It's not to be despised, but this isn't the most significant music in the world. It is, however, extremely well played and recorded. --Leslie Gerber

4 out of 5 stars Beach, the New Age Composer.......2001-11-01

Recently, I discovered a score for one of Beach's two hermit thrush pieces at the Dartmouth College Bookstore. Since I am from Vermont, and the hermit thrush is the Vermont state bird, I was more than intrigued by this piece: "A Hermit Thrush at Morn." I was amazed to find how modern this piece sounded, at least for the day in which it was written. Parts of it were based on the Wagnerian style so common in late nineteenth century music, but there was a feel about this, as though the bird whose song she had copied had unwittingly dragged her into the modern era. While I would not avoid listening to Beach's more substantial works on this CD, such as the stodgy "Prelude and Fugue, op. 81," I find Beach is more interesting in her shorter pieces which are full of fun and good humor. You should also check out the last CD in this set, FIRE-FLIES.

4 out of 5 stars BEACH AT HER BEST.......2000-10-25

Beach is a talent of no small measure when it comes to piano music, and Polk a more than worthy advocate.

The opening Valse-Caprice, Op. 4 is delightful: piquant with a hint of melancholy, as is The Fair Hills of Eire, Op. 91, and Les Reves de Columbine, Op. 65, works comprised of thoroughly enjoyable, intimate miniatures. Especially enthralling, though, are the two pieces of Op. 92 ("The Hermit Thrush At Eve" and "The Hermit Thrush At Morn"). These solitary, mournful works, which Beach actually composed using precise birdsong--- marvelously!--- are haunting and unforgettable. Overtly enterprising are Beach's attempts at the larger spectrum, such as the Ballade, Op. 6 and her Prelude and Fugue, Op. 81. Perhaps there is too much fiery display, with little actual substance; but the pieces, though, are still engaging.

Polk shows herself to be a pianist of imagination, fine touch and a genuine kinship. Beautiful sound matches her beautiful performance.

    [Running time: 67:03]

4 out of 5 stars A Trip to the 70s.......2004-01-25

Proust had his madeleine dunked in chamomile tea, I have the Jazz Suites of Claude Bolling. I hadn't heard this music in probably twenty-five years, but when I heard the first track here, 'Baroque and Blue,' I was transported back to the 1970s when the world was young. The first jazz suite was on the Billboard best-seller list for, get this, almost ten years. And one heard it everywhere. I was so struck by the combination of jazz and baroque music that I picked out the first couple of pieces on the piano for my own amusement. The original recording featured pianist/composer Bolling and flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, the latter up to then a strictly classical artist. The recording was a great favorite with jazz and classical fans alike. One heard it at parties, on the radio, whistled on the street, in nightspots.

This new recording of the two suites--actually Suite 1 was recorded in 1997 and Suite 2 in 1999--features an all-Sicilian cast of musicians (Giovanni Roselli, flute and Alberto Alibrandi, piano, and friends) was recorded in Catania. It is in sparkling modern sound--the one way it outshines its illustrious predecessor--and is nicely played, although there are some places, especially in fugal or canonic passages, where the articulation of the flutist and the pianist are at odds, one playing staccato, the other semi-legato. The ensemble is tight, the fast passages played with real élan, the slower episodes with feeling.

I'm glad I have this version, because sadly my original Bolling-Rampal version is on LP. I know, though, that the original versions have never been out of print and have long since been transferred to CD; I just don't happen to own them. Also, I think the Bolling/Rampal version requires two CDs. I don't think Roselli and gang have much new to add, but they turn in a creditable set of performances here, and there is the budget price to consider.
