The Brooklyn-based quintet Ambulance LTD delivers is a solidly crafted nod to modern rock's potential for melding a few decades of wildly disparate musical influences into a compelling and cohesive new whole. From the Sea and Cake cool of "Stay Where You Are" to the distortion and dissonant drone that eventually swamp "Helmsman"'s pop foundations, there's a savory dollop here for every indie taste. It's a smart sensibility perhaps inspired by its members own eclectic roots (which reach to the four corners of America and Ireland), and one that doesn't shy away from lifting chord progressions from Roy Orbison ("Young Urban Professional") or fusing fervent new-wave jangle to sparkling, acoustic McCartney-isms on the day-dreamy "Heavy Lifting." And while it remains to be seen if they focus those talents on a cohesive long-player, this debut holds much promise. --Jerry McCulley

This New York-based quartet makes swoony, atmospheric, layered rock that's primarily interested in guitar-based interplay and subtle dynamics. Their pleasant tunes have supple melodies, a solid Velvets-derived groove, and pretty yet weathered vocals that occasionally sound like Sam Prekop from The Sea and Cake. They have too much cojones, not to mention vaguely bluesy chops, to be considered third-generation "shoegazers." Ambulance Ltd. do what any decent indie-rock band does on their first album (see Stereolab, Built to Spill, Luna): they play around with their influences, mixing, matching, and seeing what sounds best. This album is like watching a bunch of kids going crazy trying on fancy clothes at the department store, as they gleefully mix and match the Lilys, the Kinks, Versus, the Stones, and Apples in Stereo. This is not meant as disparagement; there's a real joy in watching a band come into its own. It's a safe bet Ambulance Ltd. will already be there by the time you read this. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:
breath of fresh air during a dark time in music.......2007-02-25
I first bought thier New English ep and I was blown away by it. These days I dont expect much from music but this band delivered. I suppose I would group this as being somewhat retro but I really cant compare it to any former bands except the Velvet Underground which they do a fine cover of the Ocean on a hidden track at the end. They have a sound all thier own with just the right balance of instruments without ever overpowering. I wouldnt call these songs simple but they deliver uniqueness without going too far over. I'm just a little upset that these guys havent been promoted the way they should be. Give them a little more airplay and I can guarentee that you will be hearing these guys all over. It's that good. A hidden gem.
One of my favorite albums.......2007-02-20
Wonderful.......2006-05-05
This album is a classic........2006-02-24
Dreamy........2006-02-22
Many of these tracks are drenched in a blend of Ambulance LTD's pop sensiblity and artisticness. They expertly use their influences on various tracks, from "Heavy Lifting" which channels early The Beatles to Elliott Smith with the lead singer's intimate vocals.
The album begins with "Yoga Means Union," which is a psychadelic track whose expert instrumentals would go great with a joint. The CD continues with the band's most accessible track, "Primitive," which served as their first single and was found on an American Eagle compilation. This track, however, does not give the listener a good taste of what Ambulance LTD is about in their indie pop approach. Nevertheless, "Primitive" is still a solid track.
"Anecdote" and "Heavy Lifting" go back a few decades with their 60's British pop influences in their fantastic melodies and chords. Something that bands slike Rooney attempted to accomplish but couldn't quite capture it.
"Michigan" goes for more of a folksy approach, but is still a success with its retro hooks.
"Stay Where You Are" is an alluring dreamrock gem and the star of the album. "Sugar Pill" is one of the album's heavier tracks, but is still a beauty. Contrary to the previous song, the album continues with the light and very relaxing "Ophelia," which will surprise you with its lyrical depth.
The track's final song, "Young Urban," shows a very jam band-esque side of Ambulance LTD. Like Phish and other pot-friendly bands, this album will take you out of your surroundings and put you in an intimate spot where it is just you and the dreamlike music of this talented band.
Granted, Ambulance LTD's album is nothing groundbreaking, but take it for what it is. An inoffensive indie pop album. An excellent and calculated inoffensive indie pop album.

Album Description
Rising out of the New York City indie underground three years ago, Ambulance Ltd. delivered one of 2004's most acclaimed rock albums. They also appearanced on Leno, Letterman, Conan and all the other late-night programs and toured the U.S. with the likes of The Killers, Guided By Voices and R.E.M., with an incredible performance at Lollapalooza 2005 as one particular highlight. Broolyn, NY's quartet has made a real impact on modern rock with their classic melodies and lush soundscapes and this latest EP adds a few new twists to their already wide ranging sonic groove. The "New English Ep" collects rare and unreleased material including two brand new songs ("New English", "Arbuckle"), "Fearless" featuring lead singer Marcus Congleton's best vocal performance to date on a Pink Floyd cover (from "Meddle") and the chiming live favorite, "Straight A's". Ambulance's highly anticipated second album will be released later in 2006.

ambulance is best of usa underground .......2006-05-04
this ep, a teaser for their sophomore LP due later in the year, shows theyve gotten even better as song-writers and performers. 3 tracks here, the title song, arbuckle's swan song, and country gentleman, are probably the best songs theyve recorded to date. if you liked the poppy acoustic moments on the 1st LP like 'ophilia' you will LOVE new english & country gentlemen. and arbuckles swan song is the best ambulance song to date imo, at least as effective as stay where you are and heavy lifting. but arbuckle is also in an unexpected soul/pop vein, think steely dan or doobie brothers when michael macdonald was in those bands. its the best composition & arrangement ambulance has offered to date. arbuckle would be perfect for boz scaggs or mark eitzel to record. If you know boz's sublime harbor lights or we're all alone, arbuckle's mood is a similar wistful late night saloon loneliness. arbuckle, like stay where you are before it, shows that ambulance is among the most sophisticated of the newer alternative bands. as much as the strokes or yeah yeah yeahs have released good songs & exciting performances, the best ambulance songs & recordings are simply superior and more evolved than their more famous nyc counterparts in every way. heavy lifting was 1 of the best tunes on the 1st LP and this more gentle acoustic demo is every bit as effective. straight a's was on the UK import LP & it also ranks with the best ambulance songs, a very gentle & hypnotic pop-rock tune, almost early 70s in vibe & style.
the sugar pill demo is nice but cant match the other superb compositions on this stunning EP. In total I think this EP is better than the ambulance debut LP, especially arbuckle demonstrating a new level of achievement for the band. If LP #2 is anything like this, it will surely be one of the most important rock Lps of 2006. If you liked the 1st LP this EP will blow you away. BUY IT!!

Not So "New" English.......2006-03-19
While it's disappointing that we've been waiting almost exactly two years for a release with all new material, every song on here does deserve to see the light of day. "Country Gentleman" in my opinion is arguably their best song to date. I just think they should've kept their older unreleased material and their new stuff separate. I do know in addition to a couple other unreleased songs, there were a few b-sides that were only released on a couple of singles that would've been nice to see make it on this EP as well.
A nice release though however you choose to look at it. Definitely worth the purchase.

Album Description
Brooklyn, New York's Ambulance Ltd resurrect the British shoegazing movement of the late `80s and early `90s, employing swirling, dreamy guitars in a indie-rock landscape cluttered by emo purists and punk opportunists. The UK single 'Primitive (The Way I Treat You)' is taken from their 2004 album LP, it's a singsongy groover that sounds kind of like late-'80s Wire or even the Chills. TVT Records. 2005.Album Details
