Eric Clapton had better marketing. That's the only way to explain why Richard Thompson isn't as famous as that other British guitar god. A brilliant, albeit subtle, guitar genius, Thompson writes wonderful songs that are sometimes rockin', sometimes haunting, and sometimes a little bit of both. And he presents them all in a voice that can only be called unique. Unlike most guitar heroes, Thompson is less based in the blues than he is in folk--dating back to his early years with the seminal Fairport Convention--but his has always been a folk music with bite and soul, adding things to the folk lexicon like rockabilly and zydeco. "Cooksferry Queen"--one of the 19 tracks on this compilation culled from the six albums Thompson released on Capitol between 1988 and 1999--features a guitar solo that's downright punk. Tracks like the semihit "I Feel So Good," "Razor Dance," and "Bathsheba Smiles" remain as exhilarating as anything you're apt to hear. Longtime fans will need to hear the three tracks previously unreleased on CD, including a new duet with son Teddy Thompson on "Persuasion" (co-written with Tim Finn) that is absolutely gorgeous. Ultimately, one longs for a box set that encompasses all eras (and labels) of this master's career, but Action Packed proves that the recent last third of it has been topnotch. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars One new thing.........................................2007-03-13

If you are a loyal RT fan and possess "Rumor and Sigh", "Mirror Blue" and all the rest perhaps the only reason you have to lay your hard earned down is "Persuasion" the only previously unreleased material in this collection. But what a reason; this is Richard and Teddy playing ,it singin' it, harmonisin' it and tellin' like it is. If you are not a die hard this is an excellent entry point all the classics are here Vincent Black Lightnin' ,Turning of the Tide ( a song for ex-wives everywhere) , I misunderstood (cosmic angst) The Ghost of You Walks and on and on.... superb guitar (a red fender never lets you down) & tight rhythm section(s) . There are many treasures on this album and then there is the incomporable Beeswing......... buy & enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Good 90s Summary.......2006-09-20

If there are low points in Richard Thompson's long and distinguished career, I've yet to hear them. While I'm not one of his devotees, I'd readily admit that all albums without exception, contain material other folk-blues purveyors would cry, if not die for. Yet the albums as entities are quirky, often jagged in their textures and tones. So, does a masterwork arise? Not for me, since,'Across a Crowded Room', or possibly, 'Hand of kindness' which brings me to this Capitol compilation which does beg the issues above. In short, it offers a terrific overview of a decade's worth of Thompson - Vincent, Beeswing, Razor Dance, Bathseba, Can't Wake Up...all sensational gems, which, given some interpretations by contemporary luminaries, still find their crucial edge in Thompson's shivering vocals.

3 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-04-26

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...to suggest Eric Clapton is more famous because of marketing mean some reviewer has too much wax in his ears. Richard isn't even close to the same league. Even as a "best of" it barely rises to the 3 star level.

2 out of 5 stars sorry.......2005-05-22

i just don't like greatest hits much. i'm sure some of these songs are pretty good, but i'd have to say buy something like "shoot out the lights" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Fine as a bee's wing.......2004-05-04

Some listeners may hassle over the selection, but this is a good grab for anybody who wants a single-disk survey of this phenomenal singer/songwriter/guitarist. I'd personally like to have "You Dream Too Much" on here too, but that doesnt make this collection any worse. The selections from You? Me? Us? are just right. Theres nothing wrong with the 3 new tracks either. The only problem is that Thompson's essential Capitol material exceeds the capacity of 1 CD. But if you need some RT in your collection, this is an excellent offering.

When the mid-'70s Jonathan Richman traded the "snotty," Velvet Underground-tinged sensibility of the original Modern Loves for a strummed, twangy electric style and an even lighter percussion sound, he didn't give up his convictions. The 22 cuts here, drawn from Rounder releases from the '80s and '90s, are as joyful and unironic as anything cut during those years. He explicitly acknowledges his roots in the innocent '60s on "Parties in the U.S.A.," both lyrically and in its borrowed "Hang On Sloopy" riff, and he reaches back to the Collins Kids' rockabilly nugget for this collection's title track. Richman celebrates urban delights ("I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar," "Cappuccino Bar," "Vampire Girl"), but these tunes find him digging ranches ("Circle I") and island jaunts (an expansion of "Bermuda" includes a pointed jab at the old Lovers' "She Cracked"). Openheartedly, he even cut a whole album in Nashville (well, Springfield, Missouri) style and a long-player in Spanish. Finally, "She Doesn't Laugh at My Jokes" sounds like the product of a much less damaged Brian Wilson circa The Beach Boys Love You. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get to know Jonathan!.......2007-03-18

When I was a teenager in the mid 70's living in NJ, there was a NY FM station (WNEW) that was just the only one I listened to - one dee jay, the morning man, Dave Herman, used to occasionally play an artist that was out of the mainstream, simple yet with something going on. He turned me onto many of my favorite groups at the time, The Roches, Jonathon Richman, Ramones, T.Heads. In later years he did the "something old, some thing new, borrowed & blue" allowing listeners to program thematically a small 4 song set - I entered several times; in fact, he was invited and read our wedding invitation (1980) on the air...I digress. That was where I first heard one of the tracks off Beserkley Chartbusters, either Government Center or The New Teller (still love that one). Anyway, I went nuts to buy it, instead found original The Modern Lover's album, and it was very different; had JoJo's love of the Velvet Underground all over it, with several added layers of snottiness - when Beserkley Chartbuster's had come out, JoJo must've had already visited Bermuda and was off in his own direction apparently...(listen to THIS album, being reviewed, to better understand). I loved Roadrunner, bought the next JP & ML album (with alternative version of the world famous Roadrunner on it) and started following the band around the tri-state whenever they played. Only thing is that JoJo never played anything from the albums I loved - he was taking off his shirt and crawling around the stage singing that he was "a little dinosaur", or running around like "a little airplane". It was great. Over the years I purchased the vinyl albums, but somewhere around the Egyptian Reggae era, I stalled.
I listen to Yahoo Launch radio and they played (on my station) some JoJo a few weeks ago, the song where he explains his trip to Bermuda's impact on his musical values and leanings, and I was back - back in my old room, headphones plugged in, listening to a stack of albums. So I ordered up several JoJo albums. And now my 8 & 9 year old kids can't get enough either - I cracked out the old vinyl and played them 'Pablo Picasso' (who was so jealous, he "turned the color of an avocado") on their own record player, and they didn't believe it was from the same dude - "that guy who has fun singing but not like a regular singer".
Anyway, my 5 stars are obviously based not just on content, eh? But you owe it to yourself to get to know JoJo, listen with your heart and pretend that life isn't slathered with reality, and come on a fantasy trip, where there are parties somewhere right next door, with potato chips and guys playing guitars, and that you can walk right in and start dancing...and perhaps hopefully end up dancing in a lesbian bar.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-03-02

I, at one point, owned all of Jonathan's Rounder material. "I, Jonathan" is a great album; "Jonathan Goes Country" is better than you would ever imagine. But on all of Jonathan's Rounder albums there are some songs I really feel are not needed. "I, Jonathan" and "Jonathan Goes Country" both contain remakes of some of his better late seventies and early eighties cuts for Beserkly and Sire--"Corner Store" and "That Summer Feeling" for example--which pale in comparison to the originals. What this best of collection does, contrary to some of the other reviewers' opinions here, is give you a very good representation of his best material for Rounder. If you really want a good collection of Jonathan, buy this cd, pick up "Jonathan Sings," and "The Beserkley Years: The Best of." I would hope to God that you would already own "The Modern Lovers."

4 out of 5 stars Of course it ain't perfect but who's counting.......2002-12-17

As the liner notes state (which by the way are a great addition to the package) favorite songs are going to be left off.

It seems they went heavier on the Richman albums that aren't as popular and rather skim on the classic discs. Why do we get four cuts from the mediocre "Having A Party" and only two from the his much agreed upon masterpiece "I,Jonathan"? Why four from the OK "You Must Ask the Heart" and only two from the great "Modern Lover's 88".

It's a good disc because simply it's Jonathan and it's a good sampling of a phase of Jonathan's life. Keep in my mind this isn't an introduction to Jonathan's music, just a snapshot of a particular time. This is a good album to have if you can't afford the albums the songs individually came off of. You are missing out on some classics by doing that however (When Harpo played his Harp,That Summer Feeling). I suppose you are getting treated to some classics too (New Kind of Neighborhood,Parties in the USA). My only complaint with this is the complaint I have with all "best of.." collections is that it never is the best of and often times it can be the worst if. (I really think Reno is a terrible song).

Four Stars for the music, Three for the idea.

5 out of 5 stars Richman offers a solid overview of his years on Rounder.......2002-06-07

This 22-track collection could have featured some of Jonathan's forays into instrumentals ("Blue Moon," "Grunion Run") or spoken-word pieces ("1963," "Twilight in Boston"). There, I'm done quibbling... What this disc lacks in variety, it compensates by showcasing Richman's strengths as a songwriter. His songs from this period (1988-95, on the folk-based indie label Rounder) generally revolve around relationships ("You Must Ask the Heart"), music ("Fender Stratocaster"), dancing/partying ("I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar," "Parties in the U.S.A."), rural joys ("Circle I"), urban delights ("Reno"), and the minutiae of daily life ("Everyday Clothes"). The simple rock 'n' roll arrangements place Jonathan's often humorous lyrics front and center. Action Packed is a solid introduction to Richman's post-Modern Lovers career. Fringe Benefit: The liner notes include Jonathan's charming third-person account of his "First Twenty Years in Show Business."

4 out of 5 stars "Jonathan, don't get all excited...but I do!! and I am!!".......2002-05-22

Jonathan writes rock and roll songs. They could have been written in the 1950s or 1960s, but there's also a sense of timelessness about them. Like Ray Davies, Jonathan doesn't write about Big Subjects. He writes about everyday clothes, cappucino bars, love, and occasionally Bermuda or Vampire Girls for fun. And like Ray Davies, his focus on the everyday, combined with his big heart, makes him one of the best rock songwriters ever.

This is a grand collection of the music he did for Rounder Records. Jonathan sharpened his focus and honed his craft during his time on Rounder, and this terrific selection of songs shows that. Most of the music here is Jonathan as a solo artist ("believe me, it's better that way") putting his heart out there, as open as the sky and beautiful as the moon. The material ranges from the rockin' (Parties in the USA, Dancing In The Lesbian Bar, Fender Stratocaster) to 50s-style country (Reno, The Neighbors) to wistful balladry (The Girl Stands Up To Me Now, You Must Ask The Heart). Every song on here is a gem waiting to be discovered.

There's not much any reviewer can say that can match the songs themselves. Jonathan's interviewers and attempted biographers all find a guy who hasn't got much to say about his life or his music. That's because his life is his music, and his music tells you all you need to know about Jonathan. His music is clear and honest and speaks from the heart, and in the final analysis, that's exactly what music is supposed to do. To Jonathan's credit, that's what he's done since the Modern Lovers days, and that's what he says he'll do "until it stops being fun." Let's hope it stays fun for a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2005-02-26

Roger Day is one of the best children's entertainers I have seen. I first met him when I was scheduling him to perform at my children's elementary school. He was a big hit and has been returning every year. I also use his cds with my 3 year old preschool class and they love the songs. Almost every day one of them asks to sing "Helicopter Harry" or "If You Jump on the Bed". His songs are great for dancing and the lyrics are fun and unique. Every song contains a surprise or two. Any of his cds will be an instant hit with your kids.

5 out of 5 stars Roger Rocks.......2004-07-05

We have seen Roger perform locally and my 3 year old son loved him. I ended up buying the CDs and his video. only drawback is I end up having to play them over and over and over.... for my son. The songs are fun, easy to sing to and make you want to get up and dance!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun songs with your Kids.......2002-01-20

My kids (ages 3 to 10) LOVE to sing along and do a silly dance with Roger's songs and imaginative lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Rhinos and Monsters and Hiccupopotami OH MY!.......2001-11-12

Ready To Fly is a 35 minute musical adventure limited only by your imagination. Fans of Roger Day's first kid's CD, Rock n' Roll Rodeo, will fall in love with the new set of characters including a hiccupping hippo, parachute-wearing girl, and a little boy named Harry who sprouts "helicopter hair" because he doesn't like to take baths.

Parents and teachers will delight in the lyrics and music as much as their children and will recognize some familiar artists singing background vocals (the Indigo Girls and Nanci Griffith). It's definately not your average kid's record...no syrup-y sweet sounds here...this record ROCKS!--kids and their parents can listen to it over and over again on the way to school, the grocery store, or on a rainy Saturday and not grow tired of it.

I always finish listening with a smile on my face--I feel like a 31 year old kid!

My girls saw him at a festival (4 year olds) and LOVED him. We purchased the DVD and CDs. We also met him personally and he is terrific. He should be on Noggin and other children channels!

ALSO, I like the music too!

5 out of 5 stars Fun for everyone!.......2003-05-13

Before Roger Day's children's music career really took off, he wrote contemporary songs and toured the college circuit. It was here I first heard him and fell in love with his music. This CD is full of fun catchy tunes that children and adults will enjoy. I've been to many of his children's concerts and its amazing how the kdis know all the words to his songs; how they stand up and dance and sing along! For the moms and dads who like Roger's lucid voice and easy going song writing style, check out his earlier contemporary cd's from his website.

Our 3-year old twins love Roger Day's music, and so do mom and dad! We listen to both this CD and "Ready to Fly" all the time in the car. The lyrics are so creative and the songs so interactive that it makes driving any long or short distance a breeze! "Mosquito Burrito" is a particular favorite on this CD. You won't go wrong with this if you're looking for great family entertainment! Also makes great kids' birthday party presents!

5 out of 5 stars Has a lot of merit.......2006-02-24

Definitely a nice listen late at night, but it's not what I expected. I heard there was going to be collaboration on this with the parrot from the death metal band "Hatebeak", but that must be one of the tracks on the Euro 7" release. Highly recommend, though...

5 out of 5 stars We dance and dance........2003-07-12

I had the good fortune of purchasing this CD at a recent childcare workshop, and I just had to write to say that my preschoolers dance...and dance...and dance. They absolutely love it. They "Meerkat Conga" and they waddle like penguins, and they bunny jump all over the classroom. It especially comes in handy on rainy days when the kids are stuck in the classroom ALL DAY. Each song teaches them something about wildlife, and it is just great!

Your music is great, rewarding and energetic...children get involved and do creative movement. You're great in sharing your tool with me. With your help, I have provided a music workshop for all the Headstart site programs here in San Francisco. Thank you again for your great rewarding tool. We appreciate it and continue to strive with music in the classroom.

I'm a pre-school teacher, and I use this CD during circle-time to burn up the energy of my 9 young kids. We don't have a play yard, so I have to exercise the kids in class, and the kids LOVE the music on this CD. They stomp around, and hop about, and waddle, and wiggle for as long as I let them, and the CD calms them down at the end. I went on the producer's webpage, and they provided lists of notes for instruction and interaction with the kids. I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Best club bands.......2005-04-16

Action, not, "The Action" were one of the best club bands in the UK in the mid 60's along with Alan Bown. They were one of the first British bands to play Motown. Action shows were always first class and I saw them often working as a DJ at the Blue Moon Club. Reggie King was a first class singer. The band never really made it commercially due to the fact that, like Alan Bown they always sounded better live than on record and also the fact that there records were usually cover versions. Still a great CD to own and it brings back many memories.

5 out of 5 stars It's A MOD MOD MOD MOD WORLD ETC..........2005-02-08

Normally I'm a real smart-alecy buster when it comes to these reviews, but let me tell you that this stuff is up there with the best of The Small Faces and is much better than early Who, (and I love early Who!) I know Phil Collins says that The Action are one of his favorite bands. Don't let that stop you from checking them out, he sounds NOTHING like them. Shadows and Reflections is a marvel, but it's the Since I Lost My Baby that is the show stopper. The best Brit. aranbee slowjam cover. Must be heard to be believed. Ace, as I hear they used to say.

5 out of 5 stars Mod-Soul Masterpieces from the 60's.......2002-03-01

Who were The Action? Simply put, The Action were one of the best of the British Mod bands of the 60's, sadly forgotten in favour of The Who, The Yardbirds and Small Faces by music historians. They were in many ways superior to these bands in terms of their subtlety and deft arrangements of R&B. The Action, never released a Long Player, and the material here is culled from 45's. Songs like "Shadows and Reflections" show a stunning grasp of melody and harmony far beyond that of their contemporaries. Their approach to American R&B is relaxed and natural, listen to "Since I lost my Baby" to get the truly delicate touch these lads had. But they could also churn out the dance power "I'll Keep On Holding On" is a wonderful marriage of Soul and British Invasion guitars with rock insistance and soulful pleading. "Wasn't It You" is another stunning track that showcases the bands masterful blending of British-brewed Soul. Lots of the early 60's British bands (including the Beatles) were heavily influenced by R&B, but no one married the two genres as well and as natrually as The Action. A wonderful collection of songs by a top-notch band. Someone should really this stateside, maybe dig up some long lost tracks off of the rumoured unreleased LP. Even as is this compilation is a stunner.

3 out of 5 stars An oft-overlooked mid-60s mod R&B combo from England.......2001-05-03

While the Who and the Small Faces were slugging it out for the attention of the mod kids in mid-60s England, The Action were left to fight for what was left of their musical attention spans.

The Action were more heavily influenced by American R&B and Northern Soul than their more famous contemporaries, but were not afraid to be fierce on the guitar. Despite being signed by George Martin of the Beatles/EMI fame, the Action languished in obscurity and petered out by 1967.

This disc is one of a few that has captured the band's sparse music catalogue (The Ultimate Action, which I presume is out of print, is another one that comes to mind).

The band was heavily into covers, but their version of "Since I Lost My Baby" is a real gem and would make Smokey Robinson proud.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of obscurity.......2007-02-23

Yaggfu Front's album represents something to me that I both love and hate about hip hop. I love the fact that I know if I keep trying, I'll continue to find lost gems of underappreciated hip hop albums like this one. I hate also knowing that not too long from now these gems will be eternally forgotten in the sands of oblivion. There are far too many hip hop acts that released one amazing album in the early 90s and then disappeared forever. What Nas said about "rap's a ghost town" is true, I could spend hours naming artists like that. But anyway, Yaggfu Front's one and only album, 1993's "Action Packed Adventure," is pure hip hop dopeness. I could go on and on trying to compare them to De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Das EFX, or the Pharcyde, but really they're such an original group that they have to be heard to be appreciated. This album is awesome, and it works only in a way that could have happened in this era of hip hop music. The trio of Deranged & Damaged, Spin 4th, and Jingle Bel represented North Carolina years before anyone else did. The intro introduces the album as some kind of loose concept, but that quickly falls apart. Everything about the album is obscure. The lyrics are practically impossible to follow half the time, and I love trying to decipher the nonsense that the MCs spit. The crazy stories of car chases, female troubles, traveling, and whatever else are absolutely hilarious and enhanced by their great voices. The beats are incredible, anchored by totally obscure horn samples and instrumentals. The beats kind of sound distant and far off, almost like a movie soundtrack that the album sometimes tries to emulate. Even if you can't appreciate the wild lyricism, the beats will keep you engrossed. I admit it took me a few listens to really get into "Action Packed Adventure," but this album is just awesome.

The intro is absolutely hilarious, starting with a movie preview about amputee robot dogs. This is what Yaggfu's all about. The next song, "Where'd You Get Your Bo Bo's," is just dope-dope-dope. A stand-up bass and piano create the laidback, chilled out musical backdrop for the verses, which serve to ask "Where'd you get those skills!" I just love the whole thing, from the opening line ("Fee, fi, fo, fum/I spill the blood of the ignorant ones...") to the running commentary ("Mm-mm-mm...this is the best thing I seen since lunch and it's makin' me hungry!"). Like I said, pure hip hop dope. "Trooper 101" has wild saxes and drums, hilarious lyrics that will leave your head spinning. Between crazy trombone samples and another sweet bass and piano combo, "Mr. Hook" follows suit. "Busted Loop" again is awesome. The trio tries to function as always, even though, as the commentator futilely explains, "Yo, uh, yeah, this is dope, but, you know your sample's busted?" I have no idea what "Fruitless-Moot" is trying to say, but the music is maybe the best on the album, with a flute and ragtime-style piano solo that sounds like it's coming from underwater. "Black Liquid" is lyrically my favorite, telling a story reminiscent of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with music and acting to match. "Slappin' Suckas Silly" is a little more accessible, still great, and the title track attempts to convey, well, an action packed adventure in grand fashion. "Left Field" is a lyrical gem, and "Hold 'Em Back" precedes "Uptown Downtown," which discusses their wide travels. "Frontline" makes a stab for a little relevance amidst the craziness, check out the muted sax on this track. "Sweet Caroline" is an awesome outro. The bonus track, "My D... Is So Large," is one of the funniest I've ever heard on record. As they explain before it starts, the group was mad that they were forced to put a parental advisory sticker on their cover, because it "wasn't their style." So to get the most out of their explicit status, they made this absolutely ridiculous song to be as vulgar as possible, and it's just so funny. Yaggfu executed it to excellence.

Chances are you will never have the incredible luck to come across "Action Packed Adventure" in a store like I did. So I highly suggest listeners take advantage of the low-priced used ones available here. Yaggfu Front isn't perfect or artistic or anything like that, but I could seriously just spend years listening to this CD. The end of one of the songs sums it up perfectly. After yet another zany tale of odd happenings, the music ends and a voice begins to say, "The point of this song was..." before being cut off by the end of the track, leaving the intention for you to interpret. Hip hop doesn't need a point, and with beats and fun like this it can still be beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Ya know you'll get f@*#ed up if you front!!!.......2006-06-24

This was one of those LPs that just grew and grew on me. At first, (back in 94) I just thought this album was just okay. I liked the beats, but... well... I don't know. After several listens though this album became one of my obscure favorites in my collection. Yaggfu Front was much like De La back in their Prince Paul era; silly, but yet incredibly dope at the same time. Being that, I wouldn't get rid this CD like how I would never lose any of my De La records.

The topics on the songs range from drinking, getting pulled over, pirates, losing girls etc. One of my personal favorites was the bonus track, "My D!@* Is So Large." When the group realized they were going to be given a "parental advisory" sticker on their album, they decided to really make it worth it. The rhymes were uber wack on that song, but the point is made.

If you're a fan of De La or Little Brother, I would say cop this CD mos def. It might take a few listens, but you'll find this LP was worth the diggin'.

5 out of 5 stars Props for Honesty.......2005-06-21

One of the few from North Cackie to put it down alongside N'Tyce and Omiscience (before Petty Pablo and Little Brother), Yagfu proved cats from the "dirty" could rhyme w/ out the emphasis on riding low, caddies and strip clubs. But lets face it, this album sounds great because of the beats. The lyrics on the other hand will never stand the test of time, neither the concept for the album. But one has to give credit for them admitting they were whack...

So if anyone is reading this, which is unlikely, if lyrics are at the top of your list for great Hip Hop, this album is not for you...

"Hey you with them slim-jims! With them leopard spots! Come on honey, let's bop!" shouts obscure Texas rockabilly musician Johnny Dollar (his real name) at the start of this collection of 1957-58 recordings. Hearing Dollar's keen, fully formed visceral intensity on "Car Coat Baby" and "Green-Eyed Cat" poses questions as to why a major label didn't snatch him up and take him beyond Dallas's Big "D" stage to wider fame. Dollar was a fountainhead of sorts; his songs "Action Packed" and "Rockin' Bones," heard here in their original form, would become signature tunes for Big "D" teenage rocker Ronnie Dawson. Sadly, aside from modest success as a late-'60s country producer and singer, Dollar was doomed to remain on the fringes, battered by divorces, alcoholism, depression, and finally throat cancer that led to his 1986 suicide. Hearing these vintage tracks leaves a clear sense of his tragically unfulfilled promise. --Rich Kienzle
