2 out of 5 stars Favorites of the past.......2007-07-19

All the famous favorites are here and done exactly as you remember them. I was hoping for something that put a new feel to the oldies and this was not it. If you are looking for great European relaxing music check out Mediterranean Nights by various artist and Azucar by Luciani.

5 out of 5 stars Seventh heaven.......2007-06-15

Lovely collection of music! Many pieces I already knew but would not have been able to play them all together; this CD has done that for me. I would have liked even more of the mandolin pieces playing some Italian favorites. This instrument is particularly beautiful (the mandolin) and is so Italian and mediterranean. Lovely vocalists for the arias of some of the nicest operas, too! It was all very beautiful and relaxing to listen to and I felt my self reminiscing the few times I spent in Tuscany and other parts of Italy. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-05-13

Have heard the songs before , however, this CD presents them in a very beautiful way. Loved it.

I can't say enough about this musician. The music will sooth your soul. A must have for your car CD player, it will help you through the traffic :}

4 out of 5 stars Very relaxing to listen to .......2007-03-07

I'm a new fan to Andre Rieu. I didn't start getting into his music until I caught his Christmas special on my local PBS station last year. I found his performances highly energetic and playful which is rare in this often serious musical genre. After catching a repeat performance of "Tuscany", I decided to make the cd version my next Andre Rieu purchase. Whenever I listen to "Tuscany", I can easily see Andre Rieu performing with his orchestra. His skills as a violinist is exquisite. He is very subtle and is never out of tune. "Tuscany" begins with three of the most beautiful classical numbers I have ever heard. The beautiful orchestral melodies puts me at ease. I wished that the cd included "The Rose" (the Bette Midler tune) that can be seen on the dvd. I loved the operatic version. It would have been a nice addition to the cd. Of all the operatic numbers my favorite has to be "Ode to Joy". I have to admit though the singers have a terrible tendency to caterwaul on the songs which can be quite disconcerting for these ears. On the other hand the same can be said about a lot of opera singers as well as modern pop singers. There wasn't a single song on the cd that I didn't enjoy listening to. Andre Rieu's love for music really does shine through his music here. I hope some day I will have the opportunity to see him perform live. I don't think nothing can compare to seeing this talented artist live. Until then his cds will do nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding program.......2007-02-10

What wouldn't I give to have been enjoying this magnificent program in that beautiful square in Italy? Fantastic performance of unbelievabe quality and program choices. I wouldn't trade this DVD for anything.

5 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu's Tuscany.......2007-01-10

Haunting melodies taking you to the hills of Tuscany where this concert was originally held. Plays well while travelling as well as at home.

5 out of 5 stars "Tuscany" is one of Andre Rieu's best shows! Excellent CD!.......2007-01-10

I'm an Andre Rieu fan and can definitely review this CD as one of his best! It was well-recorded with good sound quality, and you can hear the excitement of that evening in Tuscany as you listen to this CD. I would also recommend the DVD/Video of that performance.

I bought the CD after hearing it at a friend's home. It's quite different than the music I typically listen to; but it's quite lovely. It's very relaxing and reflective.

Album Description

annie Haslam, Michael Dunford and Terrence Sullivan, known to the world as Renaissance deliver one of their finest efforts to date entitled Tuscany. Complete with ten new beautiful songs, filled with the haunting musical interplay of the band and the mystical operatic voice of the enchanting Annie Haslam, the North American fan base will finally get to hear an album that has been only available overseas as an expensive import.

Recorded a few years ago, Renaissance journeyed to Kent, England to begin the sessions for this masterpiece and they delivered what we feel are some of their best music since their hugely successful Schehrazade, Ashes Are Burning and Novella albums.

The journey begins with the fine "Lady From Tuscany", complete with Haslam's soaring voice over an orchestral setting.

Roy Wood (The Move, ELO, Wizzard) has a guest appearance here on one of the more beautiful songs on the album "In The Sunshine.

Tuscany is now released for their very loyal North American Renaissance fans. Complete with lyrics to sing along with and beautiful artwork from Spencer Zhan, Tuscany is truly a journey worth taking. Pour a glass and enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Renaissance Days.......2007-07-02

Comprising what can only be termed a return to form, this popped up a couple of years ago pretty much unheralded. Too bad, because any fan of Renaissance will appreciate its hearkening back to the band's heyday as well as the return of Annie Haslam after a brief detour with Stephanie Adlington on the not-bad-at-all THE OTHER WOMAN. True, synths play a prominent role in the instrumentation department, but the orchestra is back as is the grand piano. It sounds like the band never left, and as if CAMERA CAMERA and TIME LINE never happened (this time it's Haslam, Michael Dunford, Terry Sullivan and Mickey Simmonds, with contributions from Roy Wood and former full-timer John Tout). And yes, the smarm factor is, as always, present (In The Sunshine is the most egregious here, and Dolphins Prayer is exactly what the title implies). But at least one song, the beautifully plaintive Pearls Of Wisdom, is easily worthy of any of the best the band ever did, if not better. If you've ever had a place for Renaissance, here's one more.

5 out of 5 stars One Thousand Roses, indeed.......2007-06-08

I cannot say enough good things about this CD. For any Annie Haslam and Renaissance fan a recording of this caliber is a long time coming. Annie's voice is as true as ever and the songs and musicianship far exceeded my greatest expectations.

2 out of 5 stars The things I did in the 70's.......2007-01-12

Used to love listening to this band back in the 70's Listening to them now makes me realized just how stoned we all were. I think the songs
were not produced well. Her voice still sounds the same, but I think I must of outgrown the sound, the music didn't flow well, not the same as
their classic "Jeckle & Hyde"

5 out of 5 stars Great CD Replete With Environmental Themes !.......2006-12-06

I concede that this sounds more like an Annie Haslam solo CD. However, it is akin to a paramount Annie Haslam CD augmented with brilliant and talented musicians. Her wondrous and diverse vocals resonate with grandeur throughout the inspiring recording. The CD themes are very spiritual and some of the songs focus on nature and the environment. Fans will especially appreciate "Tuscany" if they also purchase the Renaissance Live 2001 Album recorded in Japan. These new songs blend in well with the Band's greatest hits recorded a few decades ago. Annie Haslam is as important to Renaissance as Jon Anderson is to Yes !

4 out of 5 stars Great dinner music!.......2006-08-31

I enjoy using this CD when hosting Italian dinner parties. My guests almost always remark how they enjoy this music. I think it's great listening music too. I've bought other Italian music CDs and have been disappointed because they seem to classical. This music has charm and pizzaz.

4 out of 5 stars Relaxing and Beautiful.......2006-04-19

This CD is an absolute joy to listen to. It is relaxing and a beautiful choice of songs. I love it from beginning to end.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-08-21

The problem with this CD is that every measure receives equal emphasis. The musical director appears to have no concept of strong and weak measures, or of other ways to shape the phrases beautifully. The result is a concert of beautiful old favorites that puts the listener to sleep.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Renaissance Light.......2007-04-16

Being an old fan from way back to Prologue album, I own every Renaissance one plus most of Annie's solo's. This one definitely sounds like an Annie solo. However that's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean it's a little more heavier than her solo albums but a little bit lighter then the hey day Band albums. The songs are naturally shorter, and not as heavily keyboarded like the old aggressive days but the songs are nice and definitely sound a little more like later day Renaissance with a little more synthesizer. Even John Tout is on a couple of songs but the bulk of the album has Haslam,Dunford & Sullivan on the rest of the tracks. Still I think most fans will be well pleased & not too disappointed in this purchase. Think of it as a cross between Annie Haslam solo & Renaissance light. You need it for the collection. Larry Anger

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice but wish the wait wasn't so long.......2006-01-29

To see another studio album after ALL these years is adream come true for fans of Renaissance. So how is it? It's just a shade below their classic peak period works such as Ashes are Burning, Turn of the Cards, and Sheherezade and better than some of their lesser work like Camera Camera. Jon Camp is missed here but Annie, Michael Dunford and John Tout are in good form. Let's hope this is the start of a comeback and not a finale to a great career.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly good.......2003-12-06

After a 20 year break from releasing from studio albums, Renaissance gets back together and releases Tuscany. It is a much updated sound for the band.

On the positive side, the production is good, sounding better than any of the 70's and 80's albums. Terry Sullivan's drums are bigger and fuller than on the older albums. The songs are most reminiscient of the 80's (Songs from Renaissance Days) and 90's (Annie Haslam's Renaissance - Blessing in Disguise).

Annie Haslam sounds as good as ever. It's good to see Michael Dunford back on acoustic guitar. John Tout's appearances on the album are a big plus. His occasional piano parts, like on Pearls of Wisdom, give the album the occasional `old Renaissance' sound. The best song might possibly be "Dear Landseer". That almost sounds like it could have been on Song For All Seasons or Azure D'Or.

On the down side, Jon Camp's bright and melodic bass lines are sadly missing. Alex Caid does an okay job, but the mix on his bass is rather muddy and bland, making him sound like millions of other bass players. There's also a shortage of piano on the album. It would have been great if John Tout had been able to play more of the parts, or Mickey Simmonds backed off the synths a bit and settled down at the good old piano.

Regardless, it is great that the band got together and took the time and effort to release this album. It belongs in any Renaissance collection. We owe it to this special band to support them by purchasing and sharing this music.

3 out of 5 stars An Annie solo album.......2003-05-27

Nice music, terrible lyrics ("Dolphin's Prayer" and "Life in Brazil" are especially excreable), great vocals. If you're expecting something like the early Renaissance, you'll be disappointed. However, if you like Annie's solo albums, you'll like this. It's light, new-age music which doesn't challenge much. Annie's voice is great, but she doesn't show off her range much.

3 out of 5 stars 4 stars should be the right rate, evaluating this as a pop lp.......2002-12-12

Well the right rate should be 4 stars, by evaluating this one as a pop album and considering also the voice range and its power too, during the master execution of Annie Haslam !! They are unfortunately within the progressive ring nowadays, and for this reason We are obliged,in a certain way, to judge them as a prog band: in this case my votation is 3 stars, because despite of the excellent execution, the songs aren't always inspired (expecially if We evaluate them in comparison to their prog standards of the past)...otherwise, though, such sensible songs like "Lady from Tuscany", with the fantastic and magical entering of Annie's sublime voice and also "The race", the most progressive effort at the keyboards by Mickey Simmonds, are a strong echo from the past, even if They are not much symphonic-like... this is the lightest side of Annie's compositions, expecially those ones more pop oriented, standing in the same place of works such as those ones of the band "Nevada" , these being quite tepid !! Anyway this comeback is very important and as a Renaissance's fan I hope this effort is the beginning of a new era.

Recommended but absolutely not essential !!

3 out of 5 stars Comme ci, comme ca.......2001-08-29

I hear alot of people crabbing about how how this album is good but it has some weak songs. Every Renaissance album had weak songs. Anybody remember "At the Harbor"? How about "Black Flame"? The weak songs here aren't as forgettable as those and are usually revived by great choruses. Some have found fault with Annie's lyrics, but Jon Camp and "the great" Betty Thatcher were just as capable of putting out rubbish on some of their hokey love songs. Some people have really short memories. If you have a bit of a longer memory, you will see that this album actually fits in well with the rest of the catalog. Surprisingly, the arrangements pick up right where "You" (the last great song by Renaissance, included on the Songs From Renaissance Days compilation) left off. So there are modern touches, but this is a "progressive" band after all, n'est-ce pas? There is plenty of Michael Dunford's acoustic guitar in there for us old fogies to remind us of the old days. Weak spots, but that is par for the course for these guys. Their stengths are pretty strong, though. The album stands up to repeated listening.

3 out of 5 stars It is OK , but a little empty ........2001-04-17

This is my favorite band , I listen to them frecuently since 1976 , BUT this is not what I expected from them , it sound empty and the lyrics are TERRIBLE , Annie must never write the lyrics again .

But to be fair there are some nice moments and at least we can listen to something new from them , I have to agree with one reviewer , this is just like Songs from Renaissance days .

Dear Landseer has the worst lyrics ever from them.

Life in Brazil incorporates a latin touch that sounds terrible.

Hopefully next one will bring back the lost spirit of the early 70's and if Mrs. Thatcher is not around to write the lyrics , Annie should use her voice in lyricless songs.

1 out of 5 stars This is a mellow pop album.......2001-01-22

If you are looking for classical passages that inspired their music in the 70's, forget it. In fact, there is only ONE SONG with an instrumental passage (One Thousand Roses) and it is not very long.

The direction of this album picks up from their 80's work. I would compare this to "Songs From Renaissance Days." This is closer to an Annie Haslam solo album. If you like that, then you will like this. But this is far from "Turn Of The Cards" or even "A Song For All Seasons."

And this time, we can't blame Jon Camp!
