Editorial Reviews
With a feeling for unusual melodies and fanciful sound atmospheres, Simon Collins pulls his listeners into his spell. Born in London, Simon moved to Vancouver at 8 and lives there still. As early as the age of 5, his dad showed him how too play drums and by 14 Simon was drumming in various bands in and around Vancouver. He then taught himself how to play piano and guitar, and by the time he was 16 he was already composing his own material. Simon's 2000 debut LP did well in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. For the past four years Simon recalls, 'I spent some time writing material for the new LP and working with various producers on potential songs but the results never satisfied me, thus I decided to take the production into my own hands'. With Time for Truth Simon presents his second album which shows him not only as a songwriter and singer but as a producer and multi-instrumentalist. The album features 12 total tracks including 'Reason', 'Sunburn', 'Awesome Machinery', 'Mirror' and the title track. Lym. 2005.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Interesting music interestingly sung.......2007-02-01
Some comments on works randomly selected.
Monteverdi's "Confitebor tibi, Domine." Here, Kirkby displays a clean light voice. She exhibits a spirited "Gloria Patri" with some spare but interesting ornamentation.
Campion's "Now hath Flora robbed her bowers." This cut shows off to good effect the agility in her voice.
John Dowland, "Flow not so fast, ye fountains." Here is displayed her smooth voice; her singing flows smoothly from one note to the next. There is a poignancy in her singing on this piece.
Guillaume de Machaut, "Foy porter." She treats the redoubtable de Machaut well; his works are some of the best of his time. This is smoothly song and does his work justice.
Hildegarde of Birgen, "Columba aspexit." This is the oldest composition on this CD by far. The work is spare, but well sung. There is a hypnotic quality to the work and Kirkby sings it well.
Lawes, "The Lark." Again, nice agility of her voice is displayed.
Other compositions on this CD are by Purcell, J. S. Bach, Sigismondo d'India, and Handel.
All in all, a nice sampling of the work of Emma Kirkby. I was not much familiar with her work before listening to this CD, but I am delighted that I did purchase this work.

There is no such thing as too much Emma Kirkby.......2002-07-16
Well, this disk gives us 18 selections from a number of different composers from the Baroque. Every one of them is a treasure and has its own charms. I can't pick a favorite, but I can say that each of these pieces show off her voice and singing style in different ways.
Yes, I wish she had included more Purcell and something even nicer than what we have on track 3, but what would I give up? Well, that is where I say we need this to have been a two or three disk collection.
You won't go wrong with this wonderful disk!

Big improvement on his debut.......2005-07-13
Time For Truth maintains what I like about Simon which is his concepts and lyrics. The man is a thinker and that aspect is what makes him a worthwhile artist. This disc, production wise, is also far more organic. Real drums, much less antiseptic programming, some great guitar work.
Where it leaves me wanting is the visceral impact of the lyrics far surpass the SOUND of the recordings. Sonically, no chances are taken. Simon plays some wonderful drums, but they are mixed infuriatingly low. His vocals lack bite and confidence (which is a shame, because he can sing). The whole thing feels too cautious. There is a sheen to it that undermines its lyrical punch and relevance. The production sterility that marred his first is still very much present. Having said that, the disc is definitely worth the modest price and Simon remains an artist to watch. Hopefully he won't take four or five years to follow up this disc.

Great band at their essential best.......2005-08-23
Those who are used to the gentle humor of the kid music will enjoy the way that Keith and Ezra bring their big hearts and sunny outlooks to the general themes of good (adult) rock -- dreams about the future, getting through the hard times, love and relationships, etc. I never get tired of an album like this; these guys are operating down where real life is lived. Every song is very strong and this CD keeps finding its way back into my player...
All around talented team..........2005-06-27
I digress...
They played a good selection of the songs from Closer to the Truth during the show. I found the songs so entertaining and harmonious that I bought the cd directly after the show and listened the entire way back home. Now that I have witnessed them live, I cannot get enough Trout! This cd is an excellent example of the musical range this duo can cover. The tunes are all catchy and you will find yourself singing along.
These guys may win awards for their children's albums, but they can DEFINITELY win over adults as well.
Only Two Years To Go.......2005-04-20
This album is part of the reason why. As the mother of a lot of kids, I do love their kids' music, but this album lets me overcome my slight embarrassment at loving a kids' band and say "But, look they do make fabulous 'grown-up' music too.
(Whoever said they were "a parent's guilty pleasure" in a professional review is spot-on)
The elements that make their kids music so great are also present in their adult music. They are immensely listenable. Tuneful and lyrical in places, biting and funny in others. Their adult music also contains that wry wit that makes their kids' stuff so uproarious funny. The fact that they explore many styles of music means that there is a repeatability factor for their albums and they won't get boring.
"Dreaming", "Closer to the Truth", "Alberta Postcard" and "Almost September" paint pictures with both the words and the music. They are poetic and lovely. Then they turn around and give you a great catchy, funny song like "Dangerous" in a completely different style.
The wit shows through in "Old Things" and "After You've Gone" (which is one of my favorite Trout Songs). The first time I heard both, I laughed. The 200th time I heard both, I still got a chuckle, despite the fact that I knew what the punchline was.
Trout Fishing works very hard to make sure their finished product is of top-notch quality. That the songs are well-crafted (I use that phrase a lot when writing about them, but it's true), well-sung, well-played.
So, all in all, this is a great CD (do they make any other kind?)
I was a Trout fan from the moment I heard them play the first note-kids or adult stuff, they never disappoint.
{If you want to see how great their adult music sounds in concert and why I want this as my present, I suggest going to the Kerrville Folk Festival webpage and listening to the webcasts of them playing- they ROCK there}

Magnificent is the word.......2003-04-01
These recordings were made in the St. James Church, Great Packington, Warwickshire, England, in September, 1969, and originally released on two Columbia LPs, in 1970 and 1972. I bought and grew fond of them then, and I'm happy to see them available again on a budget-priced CD. The music here, entirely instrumental, is "culled for the most part from the operas and oratorios that were the bread-and-butter of Handel's work," to quote the liner notes. This music celebrates the grand, the impressive, the ceremonial, the magnificent side of Handel; the disc is well named. If this CD has a fault, it is that there is too much of grandeur, of splendor, of the stately (there are no less than eleven marches), and too little of the intimate, the introspective, the quiet, the meditative; it makes no attempt to strike a balance.
The engineering is good, if not exceptional; while the sound does not provide the ultimate degree of clarity and focus (not unusual in recordings made in churches), it is smooth and pleasing; these recordings carry their years honorably and wear well. Biggs's role here is a modest, supporting one (the two brief concertos included are not for organ): he plays organ continuo and occasional passages of accompaniment or decoration. His instrument is the Great Packington organ on which Handel himself performed, but it is not prominently displayed. Overall I cannot fault the idiomatic, engaging, alternately spirited or stately performances of Groves, the Royal Philharmonic, and Biggs.
These recordings predate the obsession with period instruments and the efforts to recreate the conditions of performance heard in Handel's day; they are old-fashioned, full-blooded "modern" performances on modern instruments. I find them thoroughly satisfying, and the sonorities and tonal balances more pleasing to my ears than those of period-instruments ensembles. But period-instruments purists may want to be warned away; they, however, probably will not be drawn to this kind of free-ranging anthology in the first place.
If you like baroque instrumental music, I think you'll find this CD pretty hard to resist.
The Magnificent Mr Handel.......2000-01-23
A wonderful introduction to one of the great great composers - even if you have never heard his works other than the Royal Fireworks and the Water Music this will really get you going. Lots of small snippets for the beginner and yet wonderful for all Handel enthusiasts such as me.
Wonderful for putting in your personal stereo and walking the dogs to! I doubt if Mr Handel would have entirely have approved. Very good also if you are down or tired - it perks you up.
Superb CD - a wonderful experience - nerve tingling
The Magnificent Mr. Handel.......2000-01-01
This is definitely a must have for all Handel admirers. The playing is strong and inspired, and the choices for the various tracks are among the best I have hear in thirty years of Handel collecting. If you don't believe me, just sample the first track "The Entree for Alceste." It will knock your socks off!
Best of all, there are over thirty tracks of music on a CD...

A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.
