Rock's punk/new wave boom of the late 1970s and early '80s was a true grassroots movement born largely out of frustration and disgust with the perceived excesses of rock's then status quo. The resulting music was sometimes ironically reactionary, if nothing else, embracing the more direct musical essence of the '50s and '60s. But few took the notion to the extremes of Stray Cats Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker, and Slim Jim Phantom, the most popular rockabilly revival band to ever emerge from, of all places, Long Island. This set documents the Cats' brief heyday and its faithful aping of Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent. And if his vocal chops sometimes didn't match the quality of his fiery, often inspired guitar licks, musical evangelist Setzer made up for his shortcomings with sheer exuberant devotion to the genre and its godfathers. The hits are all here, along with some revealing album cuts, rarities, and portions of a 1982 live broadcast that display the Cats' considerable live charms. And if this set makes you yearn for some real original '50s rockabilly, nothing would make Setzer and company happier. Jerry McCulley

I love the Stray Cats and purchasing this cd reminded me of just how much. You can't listen to them without tapping your feet. They have a way of getting you moving to the beat.

5 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start.......2007-02-03

I kind back into the Stray Cats and Rockabilly from Brian Sezter's swing projects. The man is one of greats of Rock and Roll. Like John Foggerty, Sezter bleed pure back to basic rock and roll. The style may have been around since the 50's, but the Stray Cats created a update sound that will never go out of style. This album has all the hits as well as a few lessor known gems and some great live cuts. This album is a great place to start for anyone looking to learn more about Rockabilly and\or the Stray Cats. Would had loved to seen them live is some local juke joint, but at least they are well captured on this great collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly Revival.......2007-01-05

The Stray Cats are probably the best post 50's Rockabilly band and Brian Seltzer is an extremely impressive guitarist. This album features some great material, very 50's rock in style, often warmly nostalgic, and generally, quality listening and very entertaining. The live session at the end proves the band's performance, and the songs hold up well against the studio versions on the earlier part of the disc. Reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars What are they up to now?.......2005-01-19

If you love these guys as much as i do, you owe it to yourself to pick up the "Swing Cats" CD. A repository of ex-Stray Cats' Slim Jim Phantom & Lee Rocker plus ex-members of the Polecats, the Swing Cats continue the Stray Cats conventions while covering artists as diverse as Carl Perkins, Hank Williams Sr. ("Mind Your Own Business") and Benny Goodman, with vocals supplied by an array of guests. Quite Good!

4 out of 5 stars Short, but good collection........2004-02-08

Truth be known, there's a few better "Stray Cats" collections around. But, even though this is only 10 tracks, it does have what's essential. Included is "Rock This Town", "Stray Cat Strut", and "(She's) Sexy + 17", probably their three biggest hits. The other seven on here are all good though, and possibly recognizable even to the casual fan. This is great for the price, but if you need more, check out "Greatest Hits", or the lengthy "Runaway Boys: '81-'92".

5 out of 5 stars Best rockers in town.......2004-01-08

Stop wasting your time and buy this record (or any stray cats record)! The cats at their best (and they're back in 2004!).

4 out of 5 stars Brian Setzer before he went soft.......2001-04-26

This album brims with angst and troublemaker from a less violent day. Fist fights versus guns. Racing cars instead of a drive by. Hip, pop, rock, and a voice all rolled into one band. It gets my listen every now and again, but it's got so much energy, that I get tired of it after a while. It'd be better as a "best of" album if it had some slower stuff mixed in to balance it out.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous, underrated band.......2000-08-26

Somehow it wasn't all that cool to listen to the Stray Cats when they were popular in the early 80's. Now there is a renaissance of appreciation for them due to Brian Setzer's resurgence as a swing band leader. In many respects the Stray Cats are superior to anything Brian has done as a solo act. He wasn't as accomplished or as slick vocally, but his raw guitar playing was better showcased in this trio.

Most of their songs were highly derivative, but they have worn well and sound as good as they did 20 years ago. This is a fine introduction to their music and encompasses all of their great songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Setlist & Great Sound.......2007-05-09

I mostly listen to live music and these guys definitely perform it well

5 out of 5 stars Stray Cats Strut.......2006-03-04

This album blew me away. I hadn't heard any Stray Cats for some time, but I sure remember the exitment this New York trio generates when they play live. This live double album was recorded in 2004 at London's Brixton Academy and is somewhat a comeback/reunion effort after 25 years in the business with a hiatus in between. This trio is just awesome, the unbelievable guitar playing of Brian Setzer, Lee Rocker's impeccable timing and the ultimate stand up man on bass Slim Jim Phantom make this comeback album a testament to their choice of musical genre I.e 'rockabilly'. These guys were born to play live and I for one will make it a personal quest to see them play one more time. I would like to sum up with some hip or eloquent phrase but really there is no need, the proof is in the pudding.

5 out of 5 stars Back Together.......2006-01-21

The Stray Cats got back together to tour for their 25th Anniversary and Thank God they did.
This album is full of great music and hot guitar licks from the very first song to the very last.
The Highlights are, Rumble in Brixton, which sets the pace.
Their classic, Stray Cat Strut is another great entry.
Sleepwalk is my personal favorite, with some of the hottest guitar licks you will ever hear.
Over the course of the album he does several early Elvis songs including, My Baby Left Me, That's Alright Mama, Good Rockin Tonight.
You also hear his classic, Rock this town, Sexy and 17, and the Eddie Cochoran classic, 20 Flight Rock.
Fishnet Stockings and Runaway Boys also appear on this CD.
Brian Setzer has become the Jimi Hendrix of Rockabilly.
Setzer has established himself as one of the finest guitarists on the planet. It is really nice to hear Rockabilly with a guitar player of this magnitude, treating us to sizzling hot licks.......If you dont buy this you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Man, am I glad they did this!.......2005-02-26

Did it really take this long to get a new release from the Stray Cats? Man it is great to here them together again. I hope this starts them back to doing the Stray Cats thing more often because I miss them when they are not playing together. They sound just as good on this as they did when they started, in fact I think they are even better with age. The selection of songs is outstanding, and the quality is excellent. Now, when are we ever going to get a box set with the complete recordings of one of the greatest bands of all time?

5 out of 5 stars A Rockin' Good Time Glorious Evening! .......2004-12-26

I have been waiting for this since the night it was recorded - I havent been disappointed. It arrived on Wednesday and I haven't listened to anything else since then.

Stray Cats were truly glorious that night - from the opening shots of "Rumble In Brighton" (with the obvious but still too good an oppurtunity to be missed final chorus of "Rumble In Brixton") thru a few well selected covers & a number of Stray Cat's originals - Its just a MUST have.

If you compare the songs here to the original recordings (Brighton, Radio, Strut, Rock This Town, Runaway Boys etc etc) the sound on the night - and subsequently this disc - is really raw and ballsy.

I personally was never potty on "Something's Wrong With My Radio" - but on the night I thought it was fantastic, and listening again to this CD hasnt done a thing to change my mind.

"Please Dont Touch" (probably most famous for the version by Motorhead & Girlschool) was another standout point. But the standout points are everywhere. Couple of other great Covers "Good Rocking Tonight" - "20 Flight Rock" are well worth a mention.

The playing is exceptional - guitar bass & drums only, and yet at times they were making more racket than Iron Maiden (and thats remotely intended as an insult to either band). Lee Rocker was better than ever, Slim Jim standing on the Bass and pounding at the snare as if his life depended on it (yet still cooler than ice) & Mr Setzer, well!

This disc also contains a solitary single new recording which is great, but there's no doubt you are just tempted to go back and randomly select any of the live tracks). Its a double disc, without the 1 studio it would have fit onto a single disc.

It was a brilliant night - and this double disc captures it perfectly. No Stray Cats fan will be disappointed.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Rockabilly and Old Time Rock and Roll and Remastered to Boot!.......2006-01-11

The Stray Cats is that rare band that emerged in the early 80s playing straight up rockabilly against a backdrop of post New Wave and the latest British Invasion e.g. U2, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Culture Club etc and yet still managed to chart 2 hits from this album on the American Top-40 countdown: "Rock This Town" and "Stray Cats' Strut". The other tracks are far from filler material too with "Rumble In Brighton" being the one great standout among other good tracks. If you are into old time rockabilly like Cliff Gallup or just plain Bill Haley type rock and roll, this is the disc to get. Now this album has been very well remastered for a great sound and comes in a mini-lp sleeve packaging which is a nice have. The price for this import is pretty steep though which makes me glad I was able to get this from a source in Japan which is a lot closer to home for me and hence save lots of moolah on shipping and handling let alone the list price as well.

4 out of 5 stars Go cat go!.......2004-06-09

Album incl. hits: "Runaway Boys", "Stray Cat Strut", "Rumble in Brighton". "Fishnet Stockings" are absolutely inspired by "Bop Bop Ba Doo Bop" (Lew Williams classic), "Crawl Up And Die" is inspired by Please Give Me Something (originaly Bill Allen), "Double Talkin Baby (Gene Vincent's original), "Jeanie Jeanie, Jeanie" (Eddie Cochran), "Ubangi Stomp" (Warren Smith's), "My One Desire" (written by Dorsey Burnette for Ricky Nelson), "Wild Saxaphone" is Montrell Roy's (originaly named "(Every Time I Hear) That Mellow Saxophone"), and "Storm The Embassy" is a New Wave song. Produced by Dave Edmunds. Good rockin' album!

    5 out of 5 stars No U.S. release??.......2002-04-21

What a joke!! This is one damn fine album. I remember purchasing this when it first came out as an import LP (courtesy of a great review in Trouser Press, which was really the early version of Mojo, but I digress) and none of my friends could understand what I saw in these guys (Styx anybody???). Of course a year or two later they were MTV poster boys and the rest is history. Where do I start...Fish Net Stockings; Wild Saxophone; Ubangi Stomp; Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie. Oh yeah, a couple of hit singles here too (Stray Cat Strut and Rock This Town). Forget the Greatest Hits and Built for Speed. This one and Gonna Ball are the only two that you need. Why these are not available Stateside is a complete mystery.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2001-10-02

My sister acutally found the orignal release LP at a record store in the early 90s. I liked it so much I stole it from her.
I still have have it :))
The album should no doubt should be delcared a classic. It's just great rock'n'roll. Buy it!

    5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2001-03-03

Only two other reviews for the greatest rock and roll album ever made? That's odd. Underrated band? Probably. You don't hear much about them anymore. The other two reviews covered everything though...

Hey there, Kats and Kittens. Wanna hear the screaminest hollow-body Gretsch guitar music this side of the Atlantic? Look no further. This should be titled THE BEST OF THE STRAY CATS. Because that's what this collection is all about. The only throw away track may be GIVE IT TO ME. The rest is pure rock-a-billy heaven. I wore my pomp real high in the early 80's when these boys first started slapping wood and I'm here to tell ya, it doesn't get any better than this. I WON'T STAND IN YOUR WAY and LONELY SUMMER NIGHTS are the two best ballads Brian Setzer has ever recorded and they're both included here. Check out the high-octane guitar power of ELVIS ON VELVET and then tell me this doesn't come close to tearing the throat out of any guitar solo by Chris Spedding. When I first bought this CD it never left the player in my ride and when ELVIS ON VELVET comes on, the windows go down, the volume goes up, and accelerator gets floored. GGGGO DADDY-O. The only thing that would make this collection complete would have been the inclusion of LOOK AT THAT CADILLAC and WILD SAXOPHONE. Otherwise, purrrrfect.

P.S. Who are these DIRTY DOGGIES bringing down the reviews of the coolest cats to ever cut a side? Go review your Iron Maiden CD. DRIPS!!

The Stray Cats is my favourite R'N'R band for all the times. He mixed the spirit of the classsic sound of the fifties and the fury of punk. Trough eight official records and many bootlegs and compilations Brian, Lee and Slim, now sounds like a classic like Gene or Eddie. Thanks for all the moments of pure R'N'R you bring to me. I'm spanish and my english is no so good.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Rocker's "The Best of".......2007-05-09

Love this CD! I've seen Lee Rocker and his band in person a few times in the LA area. After hearing them, I knew I had to purchase one of his CD's. I also purchased one for a friend who heard mine and liked his music so much, they wanted one too. It is great "feel-good" Rock-a-Billy music. I highly recommend this CD. You can't go wrong.

Triple CD set containing the first three original albums by The Stray Cats (featuring Brian Setzer). All three albums are currently unavailable in the U.S.!. The self-titled album from 1981 features the band's biggest hits including 'Rock This Town', 'Stray Cat Strut' and 'Runaway Boys'. Their second album, the raw and rootsy Gonna Ball, also from '81, is now considered to be one of their finest releases.
