Product Description
Ramatam was a sort of mini-supergroup, formed in the early 70's by Mike Pinera, from the Blues Image, and Mitch Mitchell, former drummer for Jimi Hendrix. They also had one other distinction, a female lead guitarist, April Lawton, a rare thing in those days. This, their self-titled debut album, hit the Billboard charts in 1972. It is making its worldwide CD debut. Wounded Bird. 2004.

1 out of 5 stars "Ramatam"? More like "Rama-lame".......2006-03-21

Had high hopes for this record but did not like it.

Apparently there is a reason you used to see it in the used bins: it's just not very good.

Over produced and underperformed.

Blues Image is a lot more interesting.

Ramatam sure looked good on paper though.

1 out of 5 stars an embarrasment.......2005-12-10

I remember when this came out and as a guitar player myself, I was highly intrigued with the names involved on this project. My initial impression of April Lawton was to hang up my guitar and forget the whole thing (she is/was a damn good guitar player). Afterwords I realized that this album is quite an embarrasment. Their next release, the more acoustic In April Came the Dawning of the Red Suns is a MUCH better effort.

5 out of 5 stars Good sound / music from Ramatam!.......2005-04-13

If you like the sounds of the late 60's or early 70's, this one is for you, great musicians at their best, you will like it!

5 out of 5 stars RAMATAM, DECADES AHEAD OF IT'S TIME!!.......2005-03-28

THIS ALBUM HAS IT ALL, APRIL LAWTON WAS/STILL IS ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS OF ALL TIME! HER GUITAR WORK ON THIS ALBUM IS SECOND TO NONE, IN FACT THE GROUP WAS SO FAR AHEAD OF MUSIC FOR THAT TIME PERIOD ONLY NOW HAS TIME CAUGHT UP... ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Where Blues Image failed, Ramatam succeeds........2004-12-16

Ramatam (1972.) Ramatam's first album.

After three albums, the blues-rock act Blues Image was forced to disband. They only scored one major hit (Ride Captain Ride), and because the albums that didn't feature that song were dismal commercial failures, they were never even released on CD! No matter how hard Blues Image tried, they always came up short. Even though that band decided to call it a day, the band's guitarist/vocalist Mike Pinera was not ready to give up. He joined up with Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and April Lawton - a very talented female guitarist (female rock guitarist were a VERY rare sight in these days.) The group's first album, which was self-titled, was released in 1972. Read on for my review.

Ramatam's debut album is nothing short of being an excellent. Mitch Mitchell proves that the death of Jimi Hendrix did nothing to shake his excellent drumming skills. Mike Pinera's guitar playing and vocals alike are MUCH better here than they were in Blues Image. And, of course, April Lawton is a killer guitarist. It's not likely that many people were willing to give this female guitarist a chance back in the day, but those that did discovered that she was every bit as talented as the male players from the era. The band covers a lot of musical ground on this album. Blues Image tried doing the same thing, but always came up short. Ramatam succeeds at it, though! The band's hybrid of blues and rock works beautifully. When you listen to this album from start to finish, you won't want to skip any tracks - every one of them is unique and good in its own way. What more can I say? It's a great album.

It took a very long time for this album to come out on CD, but I'm glad I did. Unfortunately, there are two problems. One, the CD issue of the album is poorly distributed in America. Two, the production quality of the original album was less than stellar, and it seems the record company didn't really do a whole lot as far as remastering goes, if they bothered to do any at all. Oh well... I'm just glad it's finally on CD.

Ramatam rocks, plain and simple. Like the blues? Like rock? You'll love Ramatam. Like most classic rock supergroups (if you can call these guys such), this one didn't last very long, but while they were together, they did very well. Don't overlook this album if you're a fan of classic blues rock.

4 out of 5 stars A Star Shone all too briefly..........2005-10-09

April Lawton, whoever she was, was simply fantastic. I'm not going to sully her reputation by a gratuitous comparison of her with Fanny's June Millington, but I will say that they were easily the equal of any of their male counterparts in the early seventies. And if you can do the almost-impossible and just tune out (giggle) "multi-instrumentalist" Sullivan's "contributions" to "Red Sun" and just fixate on April Lawton here - wow. She was a wonder. And her "Bounty On My Table" is as great a secular song about her faith as was/is David Gate's "Do You Believe He's Coming" (which was released in Gates' first solo album). No, no flashy "wee-wee-diddly-SQUEECH" "lead guitar" histrionics here, just one very talented Woman's musical statement. Like I said, though, to get the full effect of Ms. Lawton's talent, you HAVE to tune out Tommy Sullivan on this thing - honestly, his stuff sounds like a demo tape for Lynyrd Skynyrd or worse...
