4 out of 5 stars It deserved better.......2007-07-05

I've often wondered if I'm the only person alive who saw "Seesaw!" It's been sadly neglected. Michele Lee was wonderful, and it was a great introduction to a guy named Tommy Tune.. The music is very enjoyable. Highly recommended for Broadway show lovers!

5 out of 5 stars SEESAW (1973 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-01-27

I SAW THIS SHOW AND LOVED EVERY MOMENT. I TILL REMEMBER HOW MUCH FUN I HAD. I WAS IN COLLEGE AT THE TIME AND HAD THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE IT AGAIN. THE SCORE IS WONDERFUL, TUNEFUL AND MEMORABLE.

1 out of 5 stars A Broadway nadir........2004-09-14

With all due respect to Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, both of whom made major contributions to the Broadway canon, this must be one of the weakest musical scores ever committed to vinyl. Worst of all, it bears no relation to the poignant two-character play on which it is based. Just who was it who wanted that tender little play to be enhanced by a big campy production number starring Tommy Tune?

4 out of 5 stars Michele Lee sings Cy Coleman's most underrated score.......2004-01-28

SEESAW was a musical version of William Gibson's rueful comedy-drama TWO FOR THE SEESAW, which originally starred Anne Bancroft. For the musical version, the leading lady was the delightful Michele Lee (BRAVO GIOVANNI) who earned a Tony nomination for her performance.

The Cy Coleman-Dorothy Fields score includes great numbers like "Nobody Does It Like Me", "In Tune" and the 11 o'clock number "Poor Everybody Else".

The supporting cast includes the always-reliable Tommy Tune, as well as Ken Howard, Cecelia Norfleet and LaMonte DesFontaines.

Highly-recommended for fans of Broadway musicals as well as the incantory Miss Michele Lee. [DRG CDRG6108]

4 out of 5 stars This Seesaw is merely quirky fun.......1999-08-22

Cy Coleman's Seesaw overture is a wonderful start to a wonderfully breezy CD. Most of the chorus numbers are very poor ( Spanglish, Ride Out the Storm), but the spotlighted Michele Lee, Ken Howard, and Tommy Tune are preserved fantastically. Michele Lee's husky voice is capable of making your heart soar and break at the same time. Her comedic timing is wonderful (Welcome to Holiday Inn), her down-on-her-luck song is perfection(Nobody Does It Like Me), and Poor Everybody Else will have you rooting for Michele instantly. Ken Howard is truly a Lovable Lunatic. And Tommy Tune's Tony Award winning performance is captured here with "It's Not Where You Start." It is typically Coleman music, but he is wonderfully aided with Dorothy Fields's lyrics. If you can find it for a discount, don't resist!

3 out of 5 stars REO Speedwagon - 'Riding The Storm Out' (Sony).......2007-06-06

Originally released in 1974, looks to be the arena rock band's third album. As I listened to this CD reissue, tunes I thought were so-so are the title cut "Riding The Storm Out", "Find Me A Fortune", "It's Everywhere" and their ballad "Without Expression". Guess this lp was put out before frontman / vocalist Kevin Cronin had joined the ranks. Duh! I'm really not all that aware of who's WHO and what's what with this 'jock rock' classic rock act. Still haven't caught them live in concert, but I will someday. Only name of this CD's line-up I did recognize was guitarist Gary Richrath. Do check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Best REO song ever.......2007-01-19

The first REO song I ever heard was the studio version of Riding The Storm Out. I didn't know he wasn't the original vocalist for the band. When I finally heard Kevin I was disappointed. I think Mike has a good rock voice, while Kevin is wimpy sounding. Every time I hear this song on the radio now, they always play the live version. I think that is a mistake.

4 out of 5 stars Great material....Where's Kevin?.......2006-10-21

Somewhere in REO circles is a rumor that Kevin Cronin actually laid all the vocal tracks for this album before splitting the band....you can find SON OF A POOR MAN on DECADE OF ROCK...with Kevins original lead vocals. Supposedly all the other vocal tracks disappeared. Supposedly.

This was the first of a downward spiral that would yield 3 low selling albums for REO...Michael Murphy just wasn't what the doctor ordered. Altho the country was taking notice of THE EAGLES and country rock was catching everybodys attention....it didn't work for everyone. They attempt writing country flavor songs...but it's just hard to envision these guys as country artists..REO should have stuck to their guns and did what they did best....ROCK N ROLL....

Like so many devoted REO fans...I wish they'd release the original version of this record with Kevins lead vocals....

I wont waste time critiqueing each song....basically REO MEETS COUNTRY says it all....even the title track is overflowing with country charm. If you were ever curious to what REO might sound like as a country rock band.....you'd love this album.

3 out of 5 stars not the best but not the worst either........2004-10-14

this album was my intro to Reo Speedwagon. at the time not many people up here in canada had heard of them . but thanks to late night FM radio we northerners were introduced to a pretty good band. the song that was played over and over again was ridin the storm out which is no surprise. this song remains one of REOs classics and just might rate as there all time fan favorite. but after that song the album kinda flattens out and becomes rather so-so. there are some good songs son of a poor man,no expression to name a couple but there is a bit of filler on this record. if you're interested in picking up some older REO stuff then pickup REO 2 first. it's a better all around album and it will give you a better picture of what REO was all about in the early to mid 70s. a really good bar band that made it to a bigger stage. if you want to hear the studio version of Ridin the storm out then sure by this album. i picked up the cd a couple of years ago and i still enjoy it but the occasional listener may think hmmm and forget about it. not a bad album but not a great one either. for dedicated REO fans only.

2 out of 5 stars Reo's third album........2004-07-20

Right before recording the album vocalist Kevin Cornin left to take a stab at a solo career, so vocalist Mike Murphy was brought in to record the vocals for the album.Mike Murphy isn't a bad vocalist, but most of the material that he is singing is not very well written. Most of the songs are weak. The only reason to check this album out is for the studio version of Ridin the Storm Out. Casual fans stay away from this one!

Album Description

This is stuff cyber dreams are made of! After Dutch guitarist/composer/producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen had finished his latest endeavour, the Ayreon rock opera The Human Equation, he wanted to do two things: showcase the many talents of Mexican singer Marcela Bovio, one of the vocalists on the Ayreon album and form a band for the first time in 10 years.

The result is musically different to what Lucassen usually produces. Embrace The Storm is way more modern than his Rock Operas and has a more gothic metal approach, blending mysterious vocals, metal guitars and atmospheric trip-hop, with haunting pianos and violin quartets. Embrace The Storm will appeal to fans of Ayreon, Evanescence, Nightwish, etc.

The Special Edition bonus disc contains DVD with videoclip, interviews and behind the scene footage.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful.......2007-04-11

I won't go into all of the history or a song by song of this album since that is done a couple of times on here. What I will do is state that this album has not left my stereo or mp3 for about three weeks, ever since I stumbled across it. I have nothing bad to say about this group of musicians or the incredible compositions on this album. Don't think about it, just buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Meh........2007-02-22

If you're really into Chick Rock, the kind of rock that is slower and doesn't do much, you'll really like this album. Besides four songs the CD is kind of bland.

Are you a fan of Ayreon? You'll get some enjoyment out of it at the least. This disc does not begin to stack up against the Human Equation. Not even close.

However, if you are looking for another Ayreon style CD to purchase you need to avoid this. This is as mainstream as Arjen's about to get and this is no concept album.

Some songs are good. The rest is okay. If you don't have Human Equation or Star One get those first.

5 out of 5 stars Holy wow!.......2006-10-18

I've been listening to bands like Within Temptation, Nightwish and so on. I saw a link to this album and ended up picking up a copy. There are enough reviews going really in depth about the history of the artists involved, so I'll skip all that and cut straight to it.

Musically inspired. Mellow overall, but with some great guitar crunch and phenomenal synth work that gives a punch to the beautiful melancholy this album oozes with. The vocal work is different from most of this genre. This woman's voice is much more mature and has a fullness and a sensuality that a lot of vocalists often lack.

If you don't immediately fall madly in love with this woman (or at least her voice) then I'd be deeply shocked. I was luke-warm the first listen through, but by the second I was committed to spinning this CD until it melted in my player. Get this album and prepare to be snatched away into the whole brooding, sexy, evocative wave that will emanate from your speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-07-09

Actually, until a week ago I never heard of Stream Of Passion, a band whose members are Dutch (3), Mexican (2) and American (1). I just happened to be in a record store and heard music that got my attention because of the beautiful voice of (what later appeared to be) Marcela Bovio. Checking the shop's DVD section I saw they also had a DVD released, which I bought and watched 4 times this week. I was very impressed. I checked out the SOP website and was lucky to find out that there was a gig on July 6th only a 45 minutes drive from my home. The gig was awesome too.

It was at this gig where I bought Embrace The Storm. The album is phenomenal. Twelve well crafted Arjen Lucassen songs, with lyrics and beautiful vocals (and some violin too) from Marcela Bovio. Guitars (Lori Linstruth and Arjen Lucassen), drums (Davy Mickers), piano (Alejandro Millan), bass (Johan van Stratum) and the violins and cellos: they all fit in so perfectly. The recording quality is of a very high level too, well balanced and detailed: super. Embrace The Storm definitely is one of the best progrock albums of recent times! The Special Edition even contains a 73 minute DVD with a 28 minute Making Of, a video, Behind The Scenes footage and (audio only, with band pictures) beautiful, mainly acoustic demo recordings of a dozen songs of Embrace The Storm (33 minutes). This really is what I would call a "Bonus". If you ever have the chance of seeing them live, go see (BTW: the women are a feast for the eyes)!

5 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful.......2006-05-17

I got this album a few days ago and I can't stop listening to it. The vocales are so achingly beautiful. The lyrics are poignant and the whole album has a sort of melancholy undercurrent. If your into mopey goth music then I can't recommend this CD enough. Buy it now!

4 out of 5 stars A good collection.......2007-05-14

Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.

5 out of 5 stars A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27

Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.

English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!

For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05

5 out of 5 stars Passed the "Opera in English" test with flying colors........2005-07-04

For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.

5 out of 5 stars Embrace The Storm a tour-de-force.......2006-08-18

This album starts off extremely strong and doesn't stop until the last tune. There's even a charming acoustic number done in espanol. The lead singer's voice, while angelic, never errs into the realm of being too saccharine. This is one woman who can really rock! I enthusiastically await their next release.

5 out of 5 stars the beauty.......2006-08-16

very classy beauty. Arjen is guy behind Ayreon does it again. I love it. All songs contain very powerfull emotions. BRAVO!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Arjen Lucassen's Stream of Passion.......2006-04-06

Well Well! What have we here? Something new from Arjen Lucassen, the genius behind Aryeon and other a couple other rock operas.

Of all the musicians I like and I like scores, Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon, Ambeon, Space Metal) is the ~~COOLEST~~!!! What makes him so cool? Well, besides being cool to look at, he does nothing and I mean nothing, conventionally. Take his previous album, the wondrous, two disc rock opera, The Human Equation, my vote for album of the year. It was recorded entirely with guest singers and musicians. Where were these guests from? Let's see we have James Le Brie (Dream Theater) Devon Graves (Deadsoul Tribe) and Mike Baker (Shadow Gallery) all from the good ole USA, Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) from Sweden, Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad) from Canada, Heather Findlay (Mostly Autumn) from UK, Floor Jansen's sister, Irene Jansen (Karma) Holland and of course Marcela Bovio from Mexico. And that's not even all of the guest singers let alone any of the musicians.

Marcela is the same Marcela Bovin who is the singer for Lucassen's latest and first band in ten years, Stream of Passion. Ostensibly the band was created toward and for the purpose of showcasing Marcela's extreme talents. In addition to featuring Marcela, Arjen also brought in some excellent musicians which to display the collaborative compositions of Lucassen and Bovio.

Embrace the Storm

Surprisingly, even though I rated Embrace the Storm four stars, I find that I am unable to get excited about it. It could be because I had higher expectations and I did have stratospheric expectations. Or it could be a certain lack of consistency and a easygoing approach on many of the songs. Then again it could just be me. I read some other reviews and the lowest was nine out of ten. Still even the highly rated songs do not stay in my memory bank very long.

The music is performed in a medium, slow tempo. Although there seems to be a consensus that the music is progressive rock, I find it to be dark and brooding, more reminiscent of gothic but it is certainly far from goth. Also the length of the songs, the longest being 5:39 do not lend themselves to my definition of progressive rock. It is symphonic but not continuously so. Rather symphonic portions are utilized more for effect and are not sustained.

Some portions and especially the singing are layered, with Marcela, accompanying herself throughout most of the album. This could be a problem with their upcoming tour but they apparently have that covered by the addition of Marcela's younger sister, Diane to the tour group. Marcela's voice is pleasant, but it does not appear to be that strong. However, she could be performing the way the music demands.

Line-up

* Arjen Lucassen - Guitars, Music
* Marcela Bovio - Vocals, Lyrics, Violin
* Lori Linstruth - Lead Guitars
* Johan van Stratum - Bass
* Alejandro Millan - Piano
* Davy Mickers - Drums

Conclusion

Am I impressed with Arjen Lucassen's latest release? Not really! Am I disappointed? Maybe, a little. On paper this should have been a blockbuster album and there are those who think that it is, but for me, the sum of the parts fell short of the total of the parts themselves.

That doesn't mean I didn't like the album. I did. I gave four songs 4 ? stars or more and many of the other songs contain exceptional portions. It's just that to varying degrees, each song, even the five star song, had some boring lapses. Nevertheless, I look forward to hearing their followup album. The potential is still there for a blockbuster. Final rating 3.9 stars

4 out of 5 stars A Step Ahead of the Pack.......2005-11-03

After the more than well-received Ayreon project, composer Arjen Lucassen and singer Marcela Bovio (one of the many voices of `The Human Equation') have formed what looks to be the most enjoyable progressive rock band in years. Melding progressive and gothic based sounds `Embrace the Storm' is a smooth, sultry, and heavy album that reverberates with the sounds of `Parallels' era Fates Warning and `Nighttime Birds' era The Gathering. The beautiful, soaring vocals of Bovio perfectly compliment the subtle virtuoso guitar riffs of Lucassen; seeming to combine into a single, near perfect, sound. Unlike the straight-ahead rock and metal feel of `The Human Equation', `Embrace the Storm' utilizes keyboards, violins, and other such instruments to create a very sophisticated and ambient sound to the records, but, surprisingly, it is not overbearing and does not bog down the sound. Subtle and ehtereal, 'Embrace the Storm' plays like the roadmap to goth rock heaven.

8.5 / 10

4 out of 5 stars Stream of creative ideas.......2005-10-30

Arjen Lucassen is an artist who always likes to think outside the box. Whenever he releases an Ayreon disc, he often has to dive into another project where he can clear his mind and use some of his other creative ideas in different musical areas. Stream of Passion is one of these projects. However, it's not just a one-off project. This is the first band Arjen has put together in the last 10 years, and yes, he does plan on going on a tour at the end of the year. Arjen's amazing vocal discovery Marcela Bovio from Mexico already impressed a lot of Ayreon fans with her exceptional performance on The Human Equation album. After the success of the album, Arjen decided to work with her in a different capacity, where he could utilise her talents and concentrate on a whole album with Marcela doing the vocals.

So plans were put into action and a totally new band was formed. With Arjen playing just rhythm guitars and Marcela doing the vocals and playing violin, Johan van Stratum on bass, Marcela's band mate from Elfonia Alejandro Millan on piano, Davy Mickers on drums, and Lori Linstruth on lead guitars also joined the band, equally contributing to the songwriting process and broadening the musical spectrum of Embrace the Storm. Like Marcela, female lead guitarist Lori Linstruth was also found through the internet. Linstruth plays a wide range of guitar solos on the disc with a distinct metal style focusing on melodious flow. Drummer Mickers is an interesting find indeed. Quite different from Arjen's usual skinsman Ed Warby, Mickers renders the album a bit more modern with exceptional timing and rhythmic drive. Finally, Alejandro Millan gives the album an organic edge with his sparse piano melodies often reminding me of Elfonia's new disc This Sonic Landscape. Though I was expecting something more in the lines of Arjen's Ambeon project, Stream of Passion has turned out to be a more band effort with real metal instrumentation rather than various electronic and sampled soundscapes. That said, the album does share a few common ideas with Ambeon, in that it features a single female vocalist lending it her voice and Arjen experimenting with rather non-Ayreon elements.

However, since Arjen wrote most of the album on acoustic guitar only to send the demos to Marcela lest she could come up with her own lyrics and vocal melodies, together with Alejandro Millan on piano, the music has resulted in subtle similarities to their own band Elfonia, except that Elfonia is a lot jazzier and perhaps more Latin-inspired. Marcela has not only composed similar harmonies, but she also sings in Spanish on three songs. "Haunted" opens up with a lush orchestral run and marching drum and bass rhythms where Marcela uses both Spanish and English lyrics in order to diversify the piece. From silently spoken gloomy Spanish sections to English-sung bits over acoustic guitars, the song does a great job of portraying the subject matter on hand, which addresses the loss of innocence. On "Out of the Real World", she uses more of her angelic opera vocals (changing from English to Spanish, and vice versa) with truly majestic string arrangements juxtaposed with a rather modern, trip-hop beat. "Nostalgia", on the other hand, is a completely Spanish-sung track with Millan's pretty piano and Marcela's crytalline voice which eventually morphs into a sweeping soprano delivery. Marcela's lyrics are dark and deeply moving, especially when matched by her emotive tone. This album has also allowed her to explore different singing styles, as her voice on the first track "Spellbound" has an evident Anneke van Giersbergen influence. This is a cold track, with a very structured drum pattern and ambient piano, along with subtle violin and an ethnic percussion break. Images of more vivid The Gathering touches are heard with the arrival of thick guitar and bass chords forming a lucid texture around the vocals.

Much more is on display on the album. From the dark bass figure, electric piano, and intense rhythm guitars that fill the alluring passages of "Deceiver" where Marcela's dual leads are mixed cleverly, to the soaring guitar solo on the piano ballad "I'll Keep on Dreaming", to the ever-changing dynamics on "Wherever You Are", Arjen opts for the perfect marriage of polarized rhythmic qualities that never fail to contrast the very slow and moody sections with a thunderous guitar and bass tandem. Marcela once again shows her Anneke van Giersbergen-like style on the other piano ballad "Breathing Again", while on "Calliopeia" the band creates their most progressive moment with cohesive instrumental breaks and smooth shifts in time signatures. Needless to say, all of these soundscapes are fantastically arranged by Arjen Lucassen in his unique and immediately noticeable style. Recommended to fans of Ayreon, Ambeon, Star One, and Elfonia, as well as fans of prog rock, gothic, experimental and dark music.

5 out of 5 stars Head Into The Storm.......2007-05-21

This is one of my favorite Jack Bruce efforts. All of his 70s stuff is worthy of a purchase, and Out of the Storm is rock-solid. Love the brilliant lyrics---eerie and moody like the LP cover. Listen to this after watching the film "Images" by Robert Altman (1972). Makes me wanna move to the UK.

2 out of 5 stars Too cacophonous-only one track interested me.......2007-05-01

I've listened to various groups that Jack Bruce joined for a short time (West, Bruce & Laing; Bruce, Lordan & Trower) and found pretty much all appealed to me. I was expecting something like what I heard in the past but was very disappointed. Only one track, (and the bonus one at that) "Keep It Down", came close to appealing to me. The first version was not as interesting as the redux. I guess if you're a modern jazz aficionado this would be your cup of tea, but I expected more rock. I've listened to some cutting edge stuff, but the songs were just not interesting except for some of the vocal work and electric guitar playing that (finally) found its way into some of the songs.
If you are a JB fan who favors his rock style, I would rather recommend "BLT" (Bruce/Lordan/Trower), "Truce" (Bruce/Trower) or the first West, Bruce & Laing "Why Doncha". The songs from these offerings aren't cluttered with a lot of seemingly disjointed instrumentals and are fairly simple, but I think they show off his vocal talents, bass playing and composing skills more than this compilation. Sorry, I guess I just didn't get it. If I had been able to preview the songs on this CD I wouldn't have bought it.

4 out of 5 stars Caps a remarkable era in JB's solo recording career........2007-01-25

You know, maybe too often we tend to raise certain artists or entertainers too high onto a pedestal. We find a work or performance so inspirational or transcendent that we can't help but apply superlatives like "genius" or "master" to the performer. I used to question whether Jack Bruce was an overlooked musical genius, or simply a better-than-average journeyman bass player who was lucky enough to hook up with a few great rock and jazz musicians along the way. But one listen to Bruce's first three solo rock albums would sway most cynics to the former - in "Songs for a Tailor", "Harmony Row" and this cd "Out of the Storm", one is continually graced with well-crafted, passionate, haunting, personal performances of some great (if eclectic) songs from a special period in Bruce's recording career in the early 1970's. He collaborates again with Pete Brown to produce lyrics dealing mostly with sun, rainbows, rivers, fields and relationships. And his three distinct vocal styles (slightly nasal tenor, falsetto, bluesy snarl) are all on display in these varied songs. Great liner notes highlight Jack's career up through the making of this album, and while reading along, one again realizes that it's no matter of luck that this unique singer, songwriter and bass virtuoso found himself playing with some of the best musicians around during the late 1960's and through the 1970's. Check out the bass line on "Timeslip" - and pick up your jaw.

I implore everyone with an appreciation for rock and music in general to treat themselves to all three of these albums. While I personally enjoy "Harmony" and "Songs" slightly more, "Out of the Storm" is a great album, and heartily recommended for serious music lovers. After this one, he lost some of his magic...

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.4/10; Performance = 8/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 7/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.2 ("4 stars")

4 out of 5 stars Forever Overlooked..........2006-03-28

Clapton got all the accolades & Bruce made records & toured through the 70's with modest fanfare. While the focus was on EC, only die-hards recognized & respected JB's talent. Mostly jazz-oriented/influenced, he always seemed to surround himself with quality musicians. This record is no different. Golden Days & Into the Storm are my 2 favorite tracks on this album, but there are NO bad ones on it at all.

5 out of 5 stars So Glad to Find this CD.......2006-03-18

I bought this album in the 70's when I was in high school. I've "recycled" a lot of albums and CDs since then, but this is still one of my very favorites. I'm can't wait for the CD to come in the mail, my album is worn out, but all the songs are a part of me, part of my internal great music collection. This is a perfect album, everything fits, there's not one song or note out of place, it's a truly amazing work.

Jack's voice is a beautiful, expressive instrument, full of passion and he uses it in amazing ways. Very few singers can match him. And he's been a long time inspiration to bass players. He really is one of the great musicians/song writers. I have no idea why more people don't know about him, or think that Cream was Eric Clapton's band, when Jack wrote so many of their songs, and was the lead singer, never mind his wonderful bass playing. His music has brought me joy, gotten me through the blues, made me dance, inspired me. Discovering Jack's music is like falling in love. I guess that's because Jack loves music so much, you can see it in his smile when he plays; he only wants "the real thing." Out of the Storm is the real thing. Wishing Jack good health, and hoping that more people fall in love with Jack's music.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack For a Great Movie!.......2006-04-26

This is probably one of the most complete scores you will ever find for an item, and the songs are all well-written and unique from each other. I will review a few specific tracks:

    1. Main Title-The Brave Little Toaster has one of the creepiest intros, panning through the dark woods to find an empty cabin full of seemingly lifeless appliences. This haunting track works very well with it.

    3. Blanket's Dream-I'm not keen on them leaving in the dialogue here, as you don't get the whole fantasy scene unless you've seen it. Still, Lampy and Radio's amusing lines are here, which is good.

    4. The Air Conditioner Blows-For anyone who was terrified of this scene as a kid, this frantic track does the whole thing justice, with a grim ending.

    6. Again, the dialogue and sound effects are left in, but they actually help the humor in this track. Lampy's voice is awsome.

    8. City of Light-This is my favorite of all the songs. It's a bright and optimistic ballad-ish song when the appliences set out. They're all good singers, even though Lampy speaks a few of his lines. Very catchy.

    10. The Pond-This one has to be heard to be believed. It's sound effects of the pond create lovely music, and the highlight is the opera singing fish (don't ask).

    11. Toaster's Dream-I just have to say, this is a really scary track to accompany the scene that probably scared me the most when I was younger. That clown...

    19. It's a 'B' Movie-This is a spooky number, and will remind you of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preformed by the junkshop appliences (and a bit by the core group), it's the first showstopper.

    22. Into the City-A Beautiful instrumental version of City of Light.

    23. Cutting Edge-A techno number sung by the mean appliences that replaced the old ones. It has great lyrics and sounds just like some commercials from that era.

    25. Worthless-A disco style song belted out by the poor cars at the junkyard before they all meet their "deaths" at a trash compactor. Catchy and sad at the same time, and a favorite of many.

    26. Finale-A seven minute long song. Ranges from hopeful to frantic to a happy ending.

    27. End Title-A very happy song to end the soundtrack.

Buy it now. It's everything you've ever dreamed of on the edge...and more!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music........2007-01-10

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

    Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.

5 out of 5 stars "Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09

Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
    ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
    (1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
    Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
    (1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
    Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
    CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
