On their seventh album, the Cowboy Junkies hitch their pony to producer John Leckie (Radiohead, Verve) and inch closer toward the mainstream. As a result,
Miles from Our Home's title track might be the group's most upbeat and infectious song ever. Unfortunately, it also means
Miles is frequently too pretty and pleasant for its own good. Think more Sarah McLachlan, less Velvet Underground. Still, gloom reigns supreme. The atmospheric "Blue Guitar" and, presumably, the slow, shattered "At the End of the Rainbow" (a hidden track) mourn the late singer/songwriter and Junkie hero Townes Van Zandt. "Those Final Feet," a lilting, Band-like tune, marks the passing of the 94-year-old grandfather of the Timmins siblings, who comprise three fourths of the band. Translated through Margo Timmins's endlessly haunting vocals, such sentiments keep the Cowboy Junkies' cloudy mystique alive.

No Depression
The Junkies have made a career out of singing songs of love, loss and loneliness, and this album is no exception....
Miles From Our Home could prove to be a good litmus test for separating the longtime Junkies addict from the more recent convert.... You can still hear the band's somber, country-folk heart beating on this album, but it's well camouflaged at times.

My favorite Junkies CD.......2004-11-04
I don't think of this CD as "pop" but maybe I'm less particular about music than some of these other reviewers. I love this CD, I love the variety on it, I love the way it slips into the background or comes to the fore when I want to actively listen. And it always reminds me of my best Junkies experience: lying on the lawn at Wolf Trap outdoor concert venue in Virginia, with the moon up above, and Margo singing Blue Guitar, and the sound enveloping me and transporting me somewhere else...
love their CD's but not this one.......2004-07-06
They went for an obvious Pop sound on this one and I gave it away to anyone who would take it after trying for six months to like it. Every track sounds over-produced. Margo's voice track is often hidden under a lot of studio production. Really, it is dreck. Buy "Lay it Down" which is amazing. They lost me on this one.
Sonic Beauty.......2004-06-15
This is the first C.J.'s album. This fine CD makes me want more of their music. The lyrics and the music conspire to immerse you in the Junkies sometimes dark and lonely world. Believe me, this is a good thing. If you value intelligent, well crafted songs, give this record a try.
A different style that works.......2003-12-08
This album differs from other Cowboy Junkies works in that musically it is much popier. It is far from mainstream pop in that the lyrics are some of their best yet, this is stuff you can think about. The music has a sharper edge than their previous works, but it is clean and interesting. The Cowboy Junkies had to grow and diversify, this album shows their wings starting to truly stretch.
Just too poppish for me.......2003-08-03
I love the Junkies: I don't care for pop. This album is a foray into a pure pop sound--very disappointing. I would highly recommend finding a way to preview this album before purchasing it, especially if you have been hypnotized by the Trinity Sessions. I consider myself flexible, but the turn of style ranks in betrayal right up there with Elvis Costello's Burt Bacharach fiasco.

One minor flaw -- otherwise excellent.......2000-03-14
This was the first CJ album I had purchased, and it has led me to purchase just about everything they've recorded. It definitely has a fuller, more commercial sound than their other albums. Margo Timmins' voice is extraordinary regardless of the material. She could sing ANYTHING and it would be interesting. The one dud is "Someone Out There," in which the supreme being is referred to by the big "f" word in the unedited version and by what sounds like "booger" or "bugger" or something in the edited version. Anyway, it's a song which is certainly not unlistenable but is unworthy of the CJ. I'd probably just buy the unedited version -- the "f" word is probably less bothersome than whatever she's mumbling in its place. The rest of the album is excellent.
Did Cowboy Junkies re-record for the EDITED version?.......1999-05-27
Love the original version, but am wondering about the edited. Does anyone know if the Cowboy Junkies re-sang this song, replacing the f-word with another word?? What word?
Excellent.......1998-10-31
I dont have the words to explain this. You just have to listen to it. And when you have listen to it once you want to listen to it again and after that you understand.
Outstanding Transition for the Junkies.......1998-08-02
The sound is more layered on this CD than previous outings. HOLLOW AS A BONE just may be the song that introduces the Junkies to a wider audience. I frequently have it on repeat. Margo Timmins' sublime voice bridges the gap between melancholy musing and hard core anguish. Yet, one feels oddly hopeful at the end of a good listen. They're not just for cold gray Sunday mornings anymore...
A beautifully crafted album........1998-07-20
I liked this album a whole lot. Judging from the reactions of some long-time CJ fans, it is perhaps a good thing that this is the first time the Junkies have appeared on my radar screen. It seems that this CD represents a stylistic shift that has left some of their core following scratching their heads. The first half of the album is very strong, and a few of the songs, including the title cut, are what I'd call instant classics. "Blue Guitar" is hauntingly beautiful. Most of the way through, the Junkies relax into a cool, sensual groove and lyrical translucence which recall the best moments of Sarah McLaughlin and 10,000 Maniacs. The only real artistic flaw, in my opinion, is "Someone Out There" which seems somewhat stilted and facile, and doesn't fit well with the rest of the album. On the whole, however, this is an impressive collection of songs by a group of seasoned professionals at the top of their form.
