3 out of 5 stars Been wondering about the U.S. remasters vs. the expensive Japanese K2 RM's?.......2005-08-06

Well, here's your answer: The Japanese win. Hands down. Big time.

To start off, I compared the album tracks of the 2004 U.S. remastered versions of VOICES, H20 & BIG BAM BOOM against the limited edition, Japanese, K2 remastered, album mini-LP-sleeve replication versions of the same titles. Then I compared the bonus track remixes on each U.S. remaster to their counterparts on the Japanese-only 12-INCH COLLECTION, VOLUMES 1 & 2.

The comparisons were performed using two Sony XA7 decks run via identical Acoustic Zen coax cables to a Camelot Uther DAC. Those of you who know your gear know that this is about as good as it gets under $25,000.

I cannot attest if the difference between the two remastering results are a result of:

1.) The K2 process being more robust than whatever mastering equipment was used (at Sony Studios in NYC) for the U.S. versions
2.) Whether the Japanese utilized source material closer to the original masters than the U.S. versions, or
3.) If the Japanese engineering was just better, or they took more time & care, than their U.S. counterparts.

Whatever the case may be, the K2 albums, and the two Japanese remix Collections, blow the U.S. versions out of the building. There is more of everything: More gain, bigger soundstage, more definition and, oh yeah, baby, more bottom end. The remixes on the U.S. versions are adequate; on the Japanese COLLECTION CD's, they THUNDER.

The three U.S. titles have nine additional remix tracks. All of these tracks appear on the two Japanese COLLECTION titles. All of the sonic accolades I attributed to the individual K2 album remasters apply to these two CDs also.

The bottom line? If you're a fan of the band, you have the cash and some above-average gear, the K2's and the dual-remix CD's are the ticket. While the entire RCA H&O catalog is available on the limited edition K2's (with the nice mini-LP sleeves), there would be some serious moolah required to acquire the full set. I consider the 3 titles mentioned here to be their best overall work from that period, so I opted for just those.

I'm currently piling thru all of the "Hits" packages from recent years to determine which has the best audio. It will be interesting to run the 2004 "Ultimate" set against the new "Essential" package.

5 out of 5 stars H2O has all the right elements!!!!!.......2005-06-17

Okay, this is another reissue that is a must have for any H&O fan!!! You'll just love the bonus tracks on this!!!

4 out of 5 stars Pop craftmanship revisited.......2005-03-07

BMG has done a good job in its reissue of one of Hall and Oates's best albums -- the collection that yielded the classics "Maneater" and "One On One."

The remaster enhances the already-high quality of the 1982 RCA set's production, which had seen the duo taking a step up in terms of technology while still focusing on songcraft.

Listen for the remixes too, including the explosive "Family Man" 12-incher and the potent reworking of "One On One," both from 1982.

The additional liner notes by Ken Sharp nicely weave in quotes from mostly new interviews with Hall, Oates and co-producer Neil Kernon. It also nicely reproduces much of the liner art of the original 1982 album.

Agree completely with above review. A milestone in pure pop perfection. Blue eyed soul at it's best.

This is a hall of fame thing. You need to own this like you need to have Born in the USA -Bruce Springsteen, or Chicago - 17 or Police - Synchronicity or Roxy Music - Avalon. This is a defining moment - duest best release and an album that they will never do again. Fantastic!!!

After 79 reviews this cd gets 4 stars that is only a huge misconception of how redundant and lame this is,this man has no charisma, the production is disjointed, lyrically it offers nothing. And the handicap n****s sketch is sick, the only handicap is the thick idiot on the front cover who claims hes a rapper

3 out of 5 stars In Stores Now "Hell and Back" the second album of Drag-On........2006-03-23

This Album isn't Drag-On's greatest and it's not a classic
you know good music from Drag-On like I do, go get Hell and Back.

It's in stores now February 2004.

2 out of 5 stars Whats It all about.......2005-11-28

I mean the song...but the hype no I got this and I dont even play it I like that other song spit these bars but thats it 2 songs 2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Opposite of H20 = Fire.......2005-10-24

This album got bad criticism when it came out but honestly I think it's very underrated, sometimes Drag-On's lyrics aren't on point (but mostly they are) but then there is great production from Swizz Beatz to enjoy.
DMX sounds like he could be X's little brother trainded by him, and comparing it to DMX's own catalouge this sounds mostly like And Then There was X if one was to compare, with all kind of songs partyanthems, to darker songs and just streetraps.
The best songs are probably the ones that goes in a specific theme throughout the whole song, brought in a story almost like small movies: Snipe Out, Groundhog's Day and of course the song about his father LIFE GOES ON.
Only One song that I usually skip Ladies 2000 but the rest is pretty straight.
Overall a good album and most songs are actually the opposite of H20 = Fire.

19. Life Goes On - (bonus track) -- 10/10 (great track that you can't help but to love if your heart isn't cold as ice, about his father)

Overall judgment: 8/10

4 out of 5 stars Decent debut for Drag.......2005-09-28

I'll start by saying for the first 4 years I had this I would have gave it 3 stars but I listened to it a good bit lately and I think it deserves 4 stars. Packed with 15 songs and not many guests (most just do the hooks), you get a good deal of Drag and I see that he has the ability to carry a whole album with a decent final product. Of the 15 songs, 1 is almost classic material, 3 are ok and the others are good. Production is decent but repetitive (but then again look who did most of the beats). Swizz BEatz does 8 songs (I can't stand more then 3 of his beats on 1 album), P Killer Trackz does 3 sogns, and DJ Iroc, Teflon, DJ Shok & David Starr all do 1 song. A goo dalbum for RR fans or Drag-On fans to have and slightly better then his 2nd album.

#2 - 7.5 (f/ Jadakiss)
#3 - 8.5 (nice beat -- f/ Swizz Beatz)
#4 - 8 (nice story)
#6 - 9.5 (f/ DMX -- great upbeat track)
#7 - 8 (f/ Eve -- nice beat)
#8 - 8
#9 - 8.5 (f/ P Killer Trackz -- nice beat)
#10 - 8 (f/ DMX)
#12 - 7
#13 - 7
#14 - 9 (f/ LOX -- tight beat)
#16 - 8 (f/ Case -- deeper song)
#17 - 8 (f/ Ice pick Jay)
#18 - 8 (f/ Parle)
#19 - 8 (another deeper song)

5 out of 5 stars Remember H2O Here........2003-01-12

This is the cd that I like to remember H2O with - its really dark melodic punk/hardcore. Its one of the best cds of the genre as well.

Even though they well ... went against everything they stood for with their first album (and "sold out", went to a major label, changed their genre to the fit the trends, etc.) this album still stands the test of time.

If you're into their newer stuff but haven't checked out any of their earlier work, check this album about and give a listen to the bands that they have tattooed onto themselves while your at it.

5 out of 5 stars H2O IS THE BEST.......2002-08-19

THIS IN MY OPINION IS THE BEST CD NEXT TO GO THAT H2O HAS DONE.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM! H2O AT ITS BEST!!.......2001-10-12

If you are a fan of Punk music, then this CD needs to be in your collection. The first Epitaph release for H2O is definitely their strongest...even though all four of their albums are fantastic... These NYC Hardcore guys keep it positive and put on the best live performances that I've seen. They exude energy and Toby keeps it real by hopping in the crowd on a regular basis. H2O are definitely at the top of the list of all the new school punk bands. I could go on and on about how these guys rock, but you'll just have to experience it for yourselves. Buy this album!! You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it.......2006-07-04

I've been a devout H2O fan for years, but I've only recently completed my H2O full length collection by picking this up. I must've been insane to have lived without this CD for so long. Obviously (look at my username), H2O has had a huge impact on me as a person, more specifically the lead singer Toby Morse. I think I'm lucky that I haven't seen H2O live while this CD has been absent from my collection (actually I'm seeing them live for the first time in August), and here's why:

There isn't one bad song on here. Of course, with the exception of Go, you can pretty much say that for all of their full lengths. Most specifically, their debut album is NYHC with a little more cheerful mood to it, if you will. Songs like "Spirit of '84", "Surrounded", "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow", and especially "5 Year Plan" and "Family Tree" have extremely infectious choruses or just "crew" vocal parts in general that beg you to memorize every word. Yeah yeah yeah, so what? This can be found in every hardcore band, right? Maybe, but I can only think of a few bands, namely Warzone, that incorporate true and positive lyrics in a such a catchy yet serious manner. Sorry if that didn't make any sense.

Another great thing about this CD compared to the others is that it's FASTER. Positive, catchy, and fast is the way hardcore should be, and even if this isn't really a hardcore album, H2O stays true to their roots and delivers in a truly distinctive way.

5 out of 5 stars my friends lookout for me like family.......2001-08-25

first off, let it be known that my music tastes are completely polar from any resemblance of hardcore. but, $hit! this is a great cd. i had heard the cd several times following its release, but disregarded it due to its hardcore style. then i actually took time to listen. from beginning to end the subjects of the songs are great. several years later i still drop this cd in to the deck and put it on repeat. any young man will identify with the content of h2o's material, and anyone with a pulse will sing along.

4 out of 5 stars Best of Three.......2001-05-19

This album is by far their best album. Unfortunetly, they have sold themselves out and signed a record deal with MCA Records and will now be heard on the radio. But their earliest albums are still good.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD. good Band........2001-05-11

I like H20 and I like this CD. Its definetaly worth buying. This a really, really, really good punk band.

5 out of 5 stars my fav cd.......2000-07-22

this 1 cd has gotten more play on my cd players than any i have ever owned. i had bought f.t.t.w and thicker than water a while ago and then i finally found this one, it is the best cd i have ever owned. the other two are excellent also but this one seems to stand out as my favorite and i couldn't imagine a cd collection without this cd. all the songs kick.

Fronted by ex-Sick of It All roadie Toby Morse, H2O have the kind of street cred and New York Hardcore (NYHC) chops that get the blood pumping. In addition, the band is well versed in the melodies of outfits like Hüsker Dü and Bad Religion and the art of crafting songs that stick like a mouse in a gluetrap. H2O's third album, F.T.T.W. (which stands for Faster Than the World) is the group's most focused and energetic release, incorporating straight-edge dynamics and pop-punk hooks on full-throttle window-breakers like "Guilty by Association," "Helpless Not Hopeless," and "Day by Day." However, the band sometimes falls in a rut, penning songs that aren't poppy enough for Offspring fans and not quite heavy enough to cause serious damage. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars East Coast nostalgia.......2006-11-28

Having the nostalgic urge to hear "everready", I discovered today that the entire "trilogy" of classic H2O albums combined takes up less space on the iPod than a few measley photographs...

H20 tunes were always short and sweet, no-nonsense, take it or leave it stuff. Some of it's a little goofy and dated sounding now with countless group shout-outs and some forgetable repetitive verse-chorus verse chorus overkill, but a decade later looking back this band's passion is respectable. Musically the band always carried it's love for Gorilla Biscuits high above it's head, but they flirted with melody and pull it off fairly well at times. I felt they peaked as a band with this album back in the day... a fun band that treated it's fans great.

The disks are still a charge to revisit 10 years later, though I gotta play them in my cubicle now (at a "reasonable volume").

"One Life!"

3 out of 5 stars hear not to say.......2005-03-05

Like the title for this review alludes, this CD possesses a distinct writing style with many quips and some crafty wordplay that really is smart and refreshing to hear. The music is nothing out of place for your typical punk bands; they have limited capabilities in what they can offer musically. They're not going to mesmerize you with long, amazing guitar solos or do extensive experimentation with their instruments. They're hard, they're fast, and they're punk and that's what they want to be and in that context they change up their music well enough and never fall into a rut just forcing the same guitar riff over and over again slightly modified. However the reason only 3 stars, fitting right, are gold above and I gave this album a 7 of 10, so 3 and a half really, is that they do stumble into a very easy trap, something that I still can't figure out how Pennywise eluded their whole career. This trap is when penning these "we got your back" songs after too many instances it is unavoidable that you're going to write a really cheesy song with lyrics that just make the listener squirm for the person that wrote them. You start to feel this way towards the middle part of the album like the lead singer is going to suggest buying your guy friends a bouquet of flowers to show how much you appreciate them. The other thing that marginalizes this album is when they write these songs that are simply sermons inside of a punk music melody. Also, it seems they think these words are so gripping that they just throw any derivative punk rock sound in the background so you can hone in on just the words. Big mistake, we don't want to be lectured and checking our belief systems while getting down to music. There's nothing wrong with writing a song trying to convey your thoughts about the world around you, just don't overdo it to the point where they'd need to bring a pulpit onstage! All in all this is a satisfactory nearing good album, however there's already a band who used this identical formula, Pennywise, and did it perfectly, so there's not much need that I can see after having listened to this, for listening to this when you can buy PW's self-titled and be on your way nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Third times a charm........2004-06-25

Faster Than The World is H2O's first release on MCA records, although they have previously released two albums on Epitapth. The move to MCA upsets fans who want to keep the music less known and feel like it's "theirs", but thats pretty much just greed and the generic punk attitude... Getting h2o on mtv and the radio has allowed them to get the credit they deserve and for the world to hear some good music.

musically speaking this album holds it own next to "Thicker Than Water" as well as "H2O". Song's like "one life, one chance", "liberate", and "can I overcome" (to name a few) will have you singing along in typical h2o fashion whether or not it's live or coming from a stereo. There is not one song on this album I don't love.

While I can't say I'd consider this album "hardcore", It's still punk and it's definitely stellar. Don't pick it up expecting a hardcore album, pick it up expecting a good album.

5 out of 5 stars Faster Than Most..........2003-02-14

This is the album that got me into punk. Well, not strictly 'punk' but anyways...all I have to say is that if you ride BMX or skate then this album will be like a best friend to you.
You can't help but want to ride as the title track starts up on your headphones. It makes you genuinely happy to be doing what you're doing and within a few weeks you'll know every single word, and get looked at funny as you ride round the skatepark singing it at the top of your voice.
Yes, it really is that good. If you're beyond being all stuck up and 'hardcore' about your music then you'll love this. And so will your thirteen-year-old pop-loving sister...which is exactly the beauty of it. Any album that makes you this happy is worth a try, no?

5 out of 5 stars SOO DAMN GOOD, BEST MUSIC EVER.......2002-12-26

YES.....

This album gets me sooo pumped up... All I want to do when I listen to this cd is jump and move around. The entire album is fast and hard, and full of sweet sing-a-longs.

Everybody loves h2o's S/T album, as they should, but this album doesn't get the credit it deserves. FTTW is just full of quality songs that will make you move. It is my favorite album ever made!

I normally don't review cds, but h2o is too good to not try to spread their word. Get this cd, and you will not be dissapointed! I guarantee it!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated classic.......2006-08-27

I was probably one of the few who bought this when it first came out.

This is the kind of jazz and soul inspired musically laid back, lyrically clever, sensible but not overtly heavy handed conscious hip hop of the Digable Planets/Arrested Development/Daisy Age school that was sadly overwhelmed by the ignorant and misogynistic gangster garbage that unfortuantely became more popular among the youth.

I bought this when it came out while I was in Grad school (1993), and as I lied on my studio apartment mattress as it blared on my CD player, "Feelin' Free" just BLEW ME AWAY and I had to call my friends to say "Y'all have GOT to hear this!"

"I Know You're A Virgin" is a VERY clever and tasteful double entendre about a wise young man who tries to initiate his girlfriend to think more deeply about the world. The refrain "I Know, I know, I know" does a good job of punctuating the tune without being annoying.

"Basement Music" tells a lot of what the group's mission statement is all about. Any rappers with the taste to sample Jr. Walker and the All Stars ( in the case, "I Don't Need No Reason" form JW&TAS' 1973 "Peace and Understanding Is Hard to Find" Lp) gets big ups in my book.

As a whole, this is a fine example of hip hop's "path not taken," how this genre could have easily been a force of unity and good will (as was the Soul Music of bygone years) as opposed to the detrimental trash it has become.

1 out of 5 stars ...........2005-11-29

If you like h2o's previous cd's stay as far away from this release as you can...toby seems to half sing half whine the lyrics (which aren't very good) and the music is repetitive and boring...nothing like the h2o of old.

2 out of 5 stars WTF happened to my band.......2004-04-02

I love theese guys but this album is depressing. Ya ok FTTW was kind of a decent from the awesome lyrics and faced paced rifs in thickier than watter and H2O but this CD plain sucks. The lyrics are mediocore and repeditive and thier is little deviation between songs they sound like a third rate mainstream punk band not hardcore and no where near as awesome as they once were. WTF happened to H2O ? ROOTS?

5 out of 5 stars H2O is fab.......2004-02-09

hey, i like this band. theyre pretty good....but i have to say that i found out about this band from Dan Marsala (lead singer of Storyoftheyear)...Storyoftheyear is the fkn best band ever. GO LOOK AT THEIR ALBUM INFO... "PAGE AVENUE" or you can go check out their BigBlueMonkey EP.

2 out of 5 stars Where did h2o go? go where? Nowhere?.......2003-10-20

Well h2o have seemed to invent a new musical style with this album. You would think that this was some kind of musical breakthrough but what to call it? Well I have dubbed the term "popcore" Think about that for a minute.. Done thinking? Yes its the gayest (not in the homosexual way, in the its too happy for its own good kinda way) sounding title ever and is a complete misnomer a oxymoron of a grand scale. I never thought it was possible but they have defied the laws of music and our beloved universe of physics. Its a preversion... Its one thing to be positive and it another the be trite and cliche, they fully encompass the term "bad religion", they are the harcore jesus pimp selling your children a guilt trip. They are like a soical engineering product for the fabled new world order as christianty has been to the U.S. in the 20th century. If you were a real punk you'd know exactly what I mean by this. They tell us all to run and hide from reality rather than confronting us with it. If you don't face your inner demons they will consume you one day or another, and you will be the one in the mental ward suffering from post dramatic stress syndrome with flash backs of all the times you ran all the times you hid. WAKE UP! this is vain... Songs remain was a self rightous way of telling you that their songs are touching and life changing that some how these songs will be with you in hardcore heaven and this song will be your salvation. Don't buy it... Your to smart for that. Right?

4 out of 5 stars super cool c.d........2003-06-07

i had first heard of the band h2o from friens who had seen them play at a local club and i just had to hear them for myself, so i bought GO. i totally loved this c.d. even the first time i heard it in my stereo because almost every song has such an awesome rock beat that you have to love this band. it's not too harsh and the songs' lyrics are real and not some lame emo punk band. if you like the band good charlotte and sum 41, then you will most likely apprexciate this c.d. i didnt give it 5 stars simpply b/c there isnt a whole lot of variety dealing with song styles, but its nevertheless an awesome pick!!!and the "hidden" track at the end is the best remake of the madonna song like a prayer. its so cool. if you are considering buying this recrd i suggest you hear it first before purchasing it on your own b/c u either love it or u hae it.
