5 out of 5 stars I LIKE BOYS LIKE GIRLS.......2007-06-13

This album is so infectious from start to finish...the songs make me want to sing and dance and have fun! And there are some songs that even pull at my heart strings, they have MEANING and they give me that fuzzy feeling in my tummy when I listen to them. Maybe you are the kind of person that does that when you hear something you really like, maybe not. But it can't be denied that these boys know what they're doing and they're good at it. Check it out! You won't be let down...

5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Love Ingrid Michaelson....she has such a smooth and modern sound. Can't wait for future albums.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh sound.......2007-06-26

Although you can notice a pattern in the way she creates the chorus beat ("the round system" and the climbing tones), the music and lyrics are fresh...on the chillin mode. I really love it's newness and "The Way I am" will be my wedding's opening song!!!

Craig Finn loves books and bars. It's not just that he pinched the title of he Hold Steady's third album from the ultimate manual for boozehounds, Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" ("Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together"), but that every leery line of every song is crammed with the wayward poetry and passion of someone who is more familiar with the bottom of a whiskey glass than the sun. Thanks to his raucous Brooklyn band, his music--louder than its predecessors this time, with a few more ballads--also happens to make a great soundtrack for an all-night bender where broken-hearts and broken bottles become one. --Aidin Vaziri

1 out of 5 stars BORING SINGER, GENERIC "RIFFS".......2007-07-23

First off, when people start throwing around adjectives like "poetic" "real" "heartfelt" etc. it gets me all excited. I'm sure it gets you excited to. That's probably why you're here. I'll give you the deal on this band. the music isn't horrible. It's an amalgam and simplification of riffs you've heard a million times from much better bands like thin lizzy, urge overkill, replacements, etc. This could be a good thing. Only difference is there's no song structure, so the riffs just kind of repeat.......off...into...nowhere. The singer's voice is annoying and monotone, but it is gruff, and there are some cheezy piano flurishes thrown around, so i can maybe see the Boss comparison. If you've heard the songwriter is "poetic" or whatever, you were lied to. The guy named the album after a line in kerouac's "on the road," so people assume he's got a Phd in literature or something. Who hasn't read "on the road?" And don't you think it's a little crass to name an album after a line from THAT book? Where's the wit is all i'm asking? where's the imagery? He just sings about getting drunk and not getting laid. BFD.

4 out of 5 stars Live Good.......2007-05-12

Received this CD about an hour before a live, soldout(~600) show. Good show, good CD.

2 out of 5 stars So Here's the Thing.............2007-05-06

Like a lot of previous reviewers, this band caught my attention by making numerous "Best Of" lists from the music press. The reviews led to me to listen to the song samples in a local Borders store. The music reminded me of Bruce Springsteen on a few tracks (a good thing) and the rest of the songs seemed to have a fresh groove to them, so I bought the CD right then.

So here's the thing.......This band is indeed a group of talented musicians, so what I heard in the store had some validity; BUT the problem with this album is that ALL 11 SONGS are essentially either about drug or alchohol experiences, or contain drug/alchohol references. Seriously. As a result, I was bored by track 5 or 6 and skimmed the remaining tracks to make sure that I wasn't missing anything (I wasn't) and have no desire to ever listen to this CD again.

It's a shame, really, because these folks are really innovative and fresh musically - they are simply a one trick pony lyrically, and that gets old real fast. If The Hold Steady could diversify the subject matter of their lyrics, this could have been a decent album. As it is, I can only give it two stars.

5 out of 5 stars Another superb effort by one of the most passionate, intelligent bands in the world.......2007-04-24

I love this album and I love the Hold Steady. I want to get that out of the way at the outset. I say this because I don't want my following comments misconstrued as part of the rather mindless stream of criticism that seems to follow this band around. There is no question that the Hold Steady is the recipient of more unfounded and ill-considered bashing of any bad around. Not by critics! Music critics rightfully praise the band as one of the finest in the world. And the praise is deserved. These guys obviously care passionately about their music and engage in absolutely no poser gamesmanship that their critics foist on them. I've tried hard to understand why people dislike the band. OK, Craig Finn doesn't sing so much as declaim, but he declaims well and is an absolutely brilliant lyricist. Musically, the rest of the band is a bunch of crackerjacks. Tad Kubler is one of the finest guitarists plying his craft in America. On top of all this, they are absolutely brilliant live performers, generous with the audience, working hard to put on a great show. Yet, the critics (again, not by critics or people who actually know what they talk about) persist.

So, on to what I have to say that could be construed as criticism. I give this album five stars because it deserves it. But I will add that I think this is the band's least brilliant album to date. Mind you, I don't think they are in decline or that this represents a disappointing effort. In many ways it is their slickest, most polished album yet. They are obvious masters of their craft and I think they well deserve their #4 ranking in the prestigious Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, which I think laps the Grammies several times in terms of credibility. The Poll is voted on by nearly 500 of the most prestigious rock critics in the world. For any album to finish in the top five means it has some serious chops going on. Nonetheless, my favorite Hold Steady album remains ALMOST KILLED ME followed by SEPARATION SUNDAY.

I could very well be wrong, but it seems to me that BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA lacks just a hint of the edge that I found in the earlier albums. And I find that I don't love as many songs on the album as passionately as I do on previous albums. Not that songs like "Chips Ahoy" and "Hot Soft Light" aren't incredible. And they've never played as intensely as on "Same Kooks." But nearly every song on ALMOST KILLS ME simply blows me away. Not so on this one. Also -- and I confess this is a purely personal bias -- I don't like the way that the addition of keyboards to the mix. I didn't like it on SEPARATION SUNDAY and I like it less on BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA. I prefer the band as a quartet than as a quintet.

If you get this as your first Hold Steady album, if you have any musical taste or sophistication at all, it is going to blow you away. You will be amazed at how literate and articulate Craig Finn's lyrics are. He is an amazing front man, though he is also the focus of much of the hatred for the poor souls who mindlessly shut themselves out from the band. His delivery of the lyrics is astonishing, but what he does can barely be described as singing. And he simply doesn't look like a rocker. He looks, in fact, like he should be selling household appliances at Best Buy. Or perhaps doing your taxes at H & R Block. If you saw the guy on the street and were asked to list the 1,000 most likely occupations for him, rock star would not make the list. He doesn't even look like he could be a record store clerk. But he is one of the most brilliant people in rock today. So also is guitarist Tad Kubler. My one regret about the Hold Steady albums is that they don't give Kubler enough room to put his vast skills on guitar on display. Still, this is a great album. And if you love this but don't have their two earlier albums, you've got a lot to look forward to.

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2007-04-11

I've just listened to all the amazon snippets after reading a positive review from Uncut. Fair enough I have not heard all of every song but what I did hear was basically the same song over and over except for the obligatory ballad. The guy is an awful singer and they sound like a good bar band at best. There are so many bands and singer songwriters who do this style of music who are 100% better than this mess

5 out of 5 stars A Gem from 1985 that went virtually unnoticed in the U.S........2006-09-11

Bryan Ferry is one of those artists that is well-known among European music fans, but in the United States - Ferry's career has almost gone unnoticed. Ferry achieved success as the lead singer for Roxy Music - who also had established themselves in Europe, but not in the United States. During his Roxy Music years, Ferry also had a parallel solo career going In 1983, for all practical purposes - Roxy Music would split up and Bryan Ferry would focus on his solo career. In 1985, Ferry would release "Boys and Girls". 1985 would be one of the most competitive years in the music industry. Artists such as Sting ("The Dream of the Blue Turtles"), Phil Collins ("No Jacket Required"), Bryan Adams ("Reckless"), Tears For Fears ("Songs From the Big Chair"), Wham ("Make It Big"), and Dire Straits ("Brothers in Arms") would all release (or have released) landmark albums during that time would garner both commercial and critical acclaim. I think it's also safe to add Bryan Ferry and his "Boys and Girls" album to that list. "Boys and Girls" went unnoticed in the United States, but it became a Number One album in the UK.

Ferry employs the use of classical instruments with dance beats for several of his songs. "Boys and Girls" is definitely not a Disco album, but in 1985 many of the tracks could have easily been played in Dance Clubs. Ferry also has some of the most unique vocals in the music industry. I would put Ferry's voice as a cross between a haunting voice and a crooning voice. For "Boys and Girls", Ferry employs a musical style that was seen on his previous Roxy Music album entitled "Avalon". While this is a "solo project", Ferry brings in some major names - including Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler (guitar) and Guy Fletcher (keyboards); Pink Floyd's David Gilmour (guitar), Nile Rodgers (guitar); and jazz musicians Marcus Miller (bass) and David Sanborn (saxophone).

Here is a synopsis of the tracks:

"Sensation": The song opens with a classic sound before segueing into a dance-beat which will dominate this track. The instrumentation on this track is outstanding. As for the vocals, Ferry's unique voice really balances well with some of the outstanding background vocals. This track helps set the tone for the remainder of this album.

"Slave to Love": This track opens with more of a haunting feel. This is one of the songs where you really see that intersection between Ferry's haunting and crooning vocals. Once again, the background vocals are right on the money. A little over 2 minutes into the song, the bridge will also have a deeper haunting feel than the opening. The guitar work is underrated on this track.

"Don't Stop the Dance": This song also has a dance club feel - but I'd categorize it as a slower dance tempo. It could easily qualify as a song that could be played in the dance clubs. There is some great guitar and horn work on this track.

"A Waste Land": This track is a prelude to the next track - "Windswept". This might only be a minute long, but Ferry draws a nice analogy between a waste-land and when love is gone.

"Windswept": This song is outstanding. Once again, there is a haunting feel to this song, but this time Ferry constructs a haunting beach-like song. The instrumentation is going to be shine on this track - especially the way the horns are integrated with some of the percussion. There is a nice buildup to wrap up this track before the track fades into the ending.

"The Chosen One": This song also uses the slower dance tempo. Ferry employs more of a crooning style for his vocals. Like "Sensation", Ferry balances his voice with the background vocals. This song almost seemed like a creative sandbox as I could easily see Ferry speeding up the tempo as well.

"Valentine": For this track, Ferry employs somewhat of a reggae-like tempo into the melody - also giving this song a "beach-like" feel. This song features Mark Knopfler on guitar, but it will be the integration of the horns that will really make this song shine. Ferry's vocals shine on the chorus part when he sings "how many men in a world of their own".

"Stone Woman": This might be the strongest track on the album and I'm very surprised this was not released as a single. Despite the name "Stone Woman", this song is one of the collection's most up-tempo tracks. At times the melody almost has a Far Eastern feel to it. I love Ferry's vocals from start to finish on this track - they really shine on the prelude to the chorus when he sings "let's be cool about it". I also love all of the instrumentation on this track - especially some terrific guitar work and more horns.

"Boys and Girls": This is a segue from "Stone Woman". This has the most haunting feel of all of the tracks. The horns once again demonstrate a feeling on the beach. While this wasn't my favorite track, I do feel it are the horns that are the strong point.

Ferry has always had a reputation for strong instrumentation in his work. Co-producers Ferry and Rhett Davies with master mix engineer Bob Clearmountain clearly keep the bar high in the instrumentation arena. This is where the remastering really helps - as it makes the instrumentation shine on this album. A couple of minor gripes about the liner notes: - while the lyrics are somewhat incomplete, what really hurts are the credits of the all-star lineup of musicians are not matched up to the tracks. On an album that has such strong instrumentation, it would be really nice to see what musicians are credited to what track on the collection. This is a very good collection. Ferry fans will not only appreciate this collection, but also the fan of music in general. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, jaded, ghosty and beautiful........2006-03-20

After purchasing Roxy Music's "Avalon", I next purchased Bryan Ferry's "Boys and Girls". Whereas there are similarities, "Boys and Girls" is a more dark work of art. The CD has a New York nightclub sound, somewhat decadent, somewhat jaded, and always looking for sensation.

Bryan Ferry's voice has a ghosty haunted painful undertone, soft and whispery. The lyrics also express the experience of love just out of reach. Instrumentation on this CD is excellent mystical rock and roll with superb male and female background singers.

Of course the hits, "Slave to Love" and "Boys and Girls" are contained here but the entire CD is full of well produced works of dark mystery and undercover longing for love. In "Slave to Love" we her 'to need a woman you've got to know how the strong get weak and the rich get poor' which is a theme throughout the work for love can be hard work in our modern disjointed times.

Ferry is a super talent, and 21 years after the release of this CD, it remains strong and penetrating.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Stop The Dance is the best of this set........2005-10-26

I couldn't resist buying this remastered release of Boys And Girls after not owning it since the late 80's once I got rid of my records. Some of the tracks on this release sound a bit dated today but I can't resist listening to Don't Stop The Dance. Of course the song Slave To Love was even a bigger hit but Don't Stop The Dance was the standout cut on this 1985 Bryan Ferry release. This album also contains the track Sensation which to me is in the same level as Slave To Love but Bryan Ferry's vocals are matched the perfectest with the sexy groroves and beats of Don't Stop The Dance. Definitely worth for that track alone.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible vocal virtuousity.......2005-08-02

I purchased this album as an audio tape when it first came out because of how much I enjoyed Roxy Music's Avalon. I have since purchased the CD for myself and for several others as gifts. This CD remains one of my favorites and is almost always in the CD changer in the car so I can listen to it whenever I want. Bryan Ferry's voice is amazing. His vocals on this CD aren't just vocals. His voice is another instrument. My especial favorite is 'Windswept'. Slow dance to this song on a special, romantic date!

4 out of 5 stars The Enduring Romance of Boys and Girls.......2004-06-28

Although it may have taken Bryan Ferry three years to make an album after the swan song of Roxy Music's "Avalon," he picked up right where that album left off. "Never seem to touch, I didn't feel enough motivation," Ferry croons as "Boys and Girls" begins a slow burn through the sumptuous world of love and longing as few others can. Veering between desire ("Don't Stop The Dance") and disillusionment (the title track), this CD rates a close second in my top favorite Bryan Ferry solo albums.

It also contains one of Ferry's most notorious songs, "Slave To Love." Most people probably heard it through a classic scene in the psychogical/sexual drama "9 1/2 weeks." It certainly set the tone for the soon to be released "Boys and Girls" and also gets my vote for one of the best shoulda-been hits of the eighties. Ferry followed this album with his best solo album, "Bete Noir." My suggestion is to get them both, and throw "Avalon" on that stack if you don't have it already.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome album!.......2007-03-21

My friend loves this band so rather than just listen to his CD I got my own. Good thing. It's been on my play list for days and I can't get the songs out of my head. The band is full of energy, yet their lyrics are deep, down-to-earth and resonate with real-life situations. "Thunder" is by far my favorite song, followed by "Holiday" and "The Great Escape." However, no song on this album deserves to be skipped. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars boys like girls .......2007-02-17

This band is amazing and they fit in so great with the music that is around today!! They are playing on march 22nd with cartel and cobra starship other bands you sould check out if you like boys like girls check out the tour dates for a city near you!

5 out of 5 stars If you like Mae you will love these guys.......2007-02-03

The guy who said they were unoriginal was partially right, but just in the sense that this style has been around for a while. They songs have good lyrics and the band sounds great. They sound like Mae kicked up a notch. So Or The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus turned down a couple notches. Either way these guys are solid.

This CD is easy to listen to all the way through on the first play, which sometimes means it will get easy to get bored with after a while. I guess we'll see, but I still them 4.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars If you like AAR, then you'll love this CD.......2007-01-21

I took my teenage daughter to an All-American Rejects concert and they band Boys Like Girls were an opening band. We all had never heard of them before, but loved their performance and their music. They even came out afterwards for autographs and pictures for the kids. Their music is incredible even for me as a mom. My daughter is definitely hooked on them and their music...

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rock bands from the 90s.......2005-11-15

I only recently discovered this record. I had always heard about GVSB, but had sort of written them off as another DC punk band. Boy, was I wrong. Man, this is one of the most unique and amazing rock albums of the 90s or any decade. Featuring a double bass attack, GVSB sound like a restrained Albini-influenced band, but somehow rock even more. Vocalist Scott McCloud sounds like he's smoked about 20 packs of cigarettes a day for ten years, all ragged and haggard, but again still rocking. Fans of anything Albini-produced or helmed should just buy this album immediately. This is pretty easily a top ten album of the 90s.

5 out of 5 stars I walked into a show GVSB was opening as they began............2004-11-03

....to play 'Learned It'. Never heard of them before, but they stopped me in my tracks. Truly one of the most concussively powerful, rocking, moments in all of my show experience. I managed to close my mouth after another song or two, bought the cd from the tour table, and after all these years, this cd resides in my 'top 50 fave' booklet. I believe this is the best example of their musical vision.

Oh, Quicksand and Helmet were great that night, too.

5 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2004-04-22

This was the first album i ever bought by GVSB, having heard only one song by them previously. I had no idea what to expect. I now consider this not only one of the best albums by GVSB, but also one of the best albums I have ever heard. After buying this, I went out and bought three more GVSB albums within a week. Since I didn't have a job at the time, that was a big deal for me. This album has a very dark, mysterious mood. McCloud's vocals combined with the bass-heavy approach and Fleisig's drumming create a sound you won't ever forget. If you have never listened to GVSB before, I recommend you start with this one. If you already have a different GVSB album, this should be the next album you buy

5 out of 5 stars Brutal charm at its best.......2003-11-13

This might be my favorite GVSB recording... although Cruise Yourself--that's pretty close. This band is good at something that's very hard. They're passionate and mysteriously alluring without once being articulate or especially melodic. This succeeds where many raw garage bands fail by virtue of an upfront brawny distortion-voiced singer and a dancey band that's recorded as if live in some idealized beer-dank opium den. The vibes of this CD remind me of what myth-man Joseph Campbell once noticed, that modern society is too obsessed with meanings while more ancient cultures revered instinct and emotionalism. This is ancient culture stuff. It's groovy music for dumb moods.

5 out of 5 stars Pull me over, captain, would I lie?.......2000-06-27

Immense, sprawling, hyperactive, abrasive... this one leaves you jumping for the volume knob, only to find it can't possibly go any higher, and if it could, you just might not make it back in one piece. Girls Against Boys put out a few releases prior to this 1993 masterpiece, but this was the real deal. It only serves to remind me of how far they've fallen since this peak, and I count this album as one of the best punk has to offer: a true milestone in style and substance from literally nowhere.

Every song on this album is indispensable. "Bulletproof Cupid" and "Let Me Come Back" are the aural equivalent of staring into the sun, tormenting journeys that climb way too high on the distorted throb of what sounds like a hundred guitars. "Seven Seas" and "Rockets Are Red" are sultry odes to subliminal behavior replete with bashing drums from Alexis Fliesig and a twin bass attack that was more than a blueprint for future indie kids to follow. "Satin Down" shares its space with what sounds like a distorted sample of someone's refrigerator motor, slicing through the pounding din, and a steady vibe drives "Billy's One Stop" before it all comes together in the bridge, the catharsis of the entire record and a moment you'll never forget. There are so many pet moments and little spare segments of satisfaction here that it would take a short story to document them all.

A hundred sorry imitators listened and tried in '93, and they never could do it better, nor could GVSB. Sleek production and a more formulaic approach added to their repetoire may have added to the decline: from here on up there was a newer, more fertile ground, and they were the first. But in the end, nothing compares to listening to this album, and I strongly recommend anyone with a taste for the sublime delights of sleek but aggressive rock to buy it immediately. Absolutely unparallelled and fantastic punk rock.

Cherish the Ladies are primarily known for their instrumental skills--nearly every member is a contest-winning musician--so it might come as a bit of a surprise that on The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone, 10 of the 13 tracks are songs. But the assured way with which the band delivers its sweet harmonies on the opening track ("The Broom of Cowdenknowes") proves the Ladies can sing as well as they can play their fiddles, flutes, and accordions. They've invited a host of guest artists to perform with them, including folk singers Luka Bloom, Tom Chapin, Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger; instrumentalists fiddler Brendan Mulvihill, banjo picker Eric Weisberg, and Chieftains member and flautist Matt Molloy; and the legendary Irish balladeers the Clancy Brothers. In a particularly moving gesture, the six band members pay tribute to their families by playing a lovely version of "The Queen of Connemara" accompanied by their fathers and brothers. The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone is a departure from Cherish the Ladies' previous dance-tune-based recordings, but the quality of the singing is so good that you don't miss the jigs and reels. --Michael Simmons

This is my second time I purchased this particular cd. I lost the first one and couldn't be without it. I just love these gals and this cd also has others on it that are super. great music.

5 out of 5 stars Cherish The Ladies.....Everyone should cherish their lovely Celtic Music!.......2006-06-27

I absolutely love this album! I purchased my first copy about 2 years ago and played it over and over again because I love so many of the tunes and learned a few songs for the Irish Feis' and the Fleadh Ceol. I played this CD so much, I think I wore it out...so I recently purchased another copy in June, 2006. I love Deidre Connolly's voice (especially on Erin Gra Mo Chroi---Ireland Love Of My Heart)....just brilliant! Joanie Madden continues to amaze with her tin whistles....the music she creates is spectacular! All of the gals in Cherish The Ladies are incredible musicians...keep up the great music!

5 out of 5 stars Make a date with the ladies!.......2006-05-05

A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing Joanie Madden at the Savannah Irish festival. I'm sorry to say that it was my first time hearing her play, and while I'd heard of Cherish the Ladies, I wasn't familiar with any of their music. Hearing her live was my impetus for getting one of their CDs and I'm so glad I did.

This CD is a lovely collaborative effort with the Ladies and their friends, and it's entertaining and crisp from start to finish. From sentimental love songs like Bonny Blue-Eyed Nancy, to the tongue in cheek wit of The Mad Puck Goat, it's one of those experiences you have when you just feel lucky to be along for the ride. And hats off to their rendition of Down by the Glenside with Paddy Reilly. He really is one of the best ballad singers out there and he's a treat on this cut.

The Ladies are great. Don't miss them.

4 out of 5 stars A few too many guest singers.......2004-06-09

I think there should have been more focus on the band, rather than guest performers. In general, I didn't like the guest singing performances, despite how famous the guys may be. The instrumental tracks are stellar, with all-star guests such as Liam O'Flynn and Matt Molloy. "Broom of the Cowdenknowes" is my favorite track. Great song, great vocals. "Erin Grá Mo Chroí" is a beautiful song very well-sung (the Dervish version on Midsummer's Night is also highly recommended). "Queen of Connemara" and "Jolly Beggarman" are other good songs. I didn't really like the arrangement of "An Poc Ar Buile", although it is still a good song. The other songs just didn't do it for me. But still definitely worth buying for any trad fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Compulsively listenable.......2003-10-01

I bought this Cd without ever having listened to a single note of the band's work. I had read a review in Sound and Vision, then the views here at Amazon, and I took a chance. I was not disappointed. Every song here is an absolute gem. The harmonies are magical, and the instrumentation will transport you. I play this disk again and again, and I think my wife is going to hide the CD if I play it at dinnertime once more. I promise you will not be disappointed. Buy this disk, and simply enjoy; it's magic, gorgeous, and worth any price.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Roxy Music - Avalon SACD.......2007-06-01

This CD is very good, but the 5.1 mix is not as rich or well-engineered as the Roxy Music - Avalon SACD. The liner notes are also not as comprehensive. No lower than four stars because it does sound good on a high-quality home theatre system. Not phenomenol, though.

5 out of 5 stars This album was made for Surround!.......2005-07-09

After 20 years, i sort of forgot about Bryan Ferry, and it took my interest in finding good 5.1 SACDs to rediscover him. Now this is what multichannel audio is all about! This is great music that is absolutely stunning in SACD surround. Yes, it's a bit gimmicky, but with the purpose of enveloping you and involving you in the music.... It's not just panning things around the room for no reason. Equally wonderful is the Avalon SACD, of course, and it is mixed in similar fashion.

Being new to multichannel music, i'm finding that less than half of them are any more enjoyable than a good stereo mix. Often, the 5.1 mix is worse. They'll just throw various instruments into the rear channels, and the solidity of the mix gets lost. I also noticed that the lead vocal is often drier (less reverb) in many surround mixes. I don't know why this should be. But that's not the case with "Boys and Girls" and "Avalon". Both albums are gleaming examples of how fun and beautiful multichannel audio can be. I hope to hear more like these.
