The Band Of Joy are best known as the outfit that gave Robert Plant and John Bonham their leg-up on the stairway to Zeppelin. The group formed around 1966, went through numerous lineup changes over a two-year span, and finally broke up in 1968 when a recording contract failed to materialize. While the band relied on its live reputation to become a Midlands legend, a revised Band Of Joy finally made it to the studio in the late 1970s, having re-grouped with their old singer to play some benefit gigs. The gigs didn't happen as planned, but an eponymous album on Polydor was followed by a barely-released second, both of which stand as undiscovered gems. Guitar-player Paul Lockey finally reveals the secrets behind the second coming in authoritative sleeve notes. This album is very collectable, has never been on CD before and contains one track that has never been released before. Cherry Red. 2005.

Hundreds of compilation recordings have been thrust on the market in recent years on the theory that classical music makes a nice, non-threatening accompaniment to everything from working out to making love. And here we have one compilation promising to make your baby smarter. It's offensive enough that the music featured on these compilations is spliced up so that the most you hear of any work is a single movement; what's really annoying is the poor quality of so many of the featured performances. So it is some consolation that the artists here include such 20th-century legends as the Cleveland Orchestra under Szell and the Budapest String Quartet with Mieczyslaw Horszowski. Of course if these folks were alive, one can imagine their violent objection to this presentation of their work. --Gwendolyn Freed

Build Baby's Brain through Classics Vol 1.......2006-07-25

I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though, and purchased a used set for my Grandson.

Wonderful stimulating music for baby.......2006-06-23

I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start.

Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational stimulation of a young mind is a powerful indicator that the child will be more advanced than the average child.

Music is not just notes played. Music--real music--is everything. Though the music of today will fade, classical music will always be around because it is classic. It fits no matter what era you place it in. There is always a home for it. The artists are timeless just as the beautiful melodies are.

I certainly believe that babies who listen to music will become more familiar with and more easily understand music and instruments. Therefore, they will be quicker of mind. It is just a fact that people who play instruments are usually of higher intelligence.

I don't think that people are destined to be stupid or geniuses. I believe it is a question of environment. I feel I'm a great mother but I haven't done everything I could have been doing to help my son's mind expand as an infant. Now that he is a toddler (18 months) I am teaching him to read and exposing him to the magic of classical music in hopes that it will help mold him and set him apart from the rest.

Minds are trainable. You just have to work at it. This CD compiled of beautiful pieces composed by instrumental geniuses will help you do just that.

The greatest CD!!.......2006-01-17

I received this CD free when I had my first baby and it instantly became my fav cd of all time. I have it on my computer and I had another copy made because I just can not imagine not having it.
And as for the comment that the music has nothing to do with intellingence, you stand alone on that front. Besides, what does it hurt? It's great, soothing music and the babies enjoy it.

I love my child, but the first time I heard this CD, It immediately went from her recorder to mine. I take it practically everywhere I go. I know it's technically "Her" CD, but the selections are so soothing; and you need that type of comfort when stuck in traffic. Honestly, we both enjoy it - and I'm glad someone thought enough to give it as a gift.

I'm not sure what people were expecting when they purchased this. For one thing it tells you exactly what is on the CD. Its not a mystery!! If you buy it on amazon it has listed every title on it so I"m not sure about the people who said they were dissapointed because they already own those titles. Obviously you should glance at the list of titles on this CD if you have a large classical collection already. However if you don't already have a classical collection this is by far excellent .I'll be honest and admit I listen to one of the volumes daily regardless of who is in the room. It's marketed for babies but it is really for anyone. There are SO many classical pieces out there. What they have done is to take the best of the best and also the ones that are known to appeal to babies. For some reason many reviewers thing they just took a random sampling of classical music. In reality they have put together those that appeal most to children. I can tell you that my 1 year old daughter actually dances to these. She really likes them a lot. I consider the whole collection a must have for any household.

Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15

Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.

Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.

Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.

Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.

However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

Great circus music.......2005-08-12

I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.

Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19

It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.

Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07

Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.

Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12

This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

Ellis' best.......2007-05-13

Don Ellis was a jazz musician who was never satisfied with making just another album. He was originally a typical "modern" jazz trumpter in several big bands, but got involved in the "Third Stream" movement in the early 60's. The later 60's introduced Ellis to "Eastern" music and from there, he created the most interesting and complicated big band ever. Tears of Joy is the high point of this band.

Ellis experimented with everything! In this band, he introduces the amplified string quartet. The sax section doubles on clarinet and oboe, and with the French horn that the band featured, sounds like a woodwind quintet. The band had three drummers and a percussionist. The trumpet section had 4-valve, quarter tone trumpets. And to top it all off, Ellis had the crazy Bulgarian pianist, Milcho Leviev to whom playing in 33/16 was natural!

There are several high points to this album. In "Tears of Joy" Ellis plays his trumpet through a ring modulator so that he played chords, all in 5/4, of course. In "Blues in Elf" (elf is German for 11), Leviev starts by playing Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" with the last triplet in each measure taken off, playing it in 11/8. This morphs into a slow blues featuring the string quartet and Ellis playing in quarter tones!

The best piece is "Strawberry Soup" which is in 9/8. Ellis subdivides the 9 beats per measure in several different ways, which is a gas. This is an extended piece (18 minutes) which gives everybody in the band a chance to solo.

This album incorporates so many different ideas about time, harmony and instrumentation, and yet it's not just a collection of gimmicks - it is great music and really swings. It's a lot of fun, and yet very interesting to listen to at the same time. I really recommend this album to anyone with open ears and an open mind.

An Underground Classic Surfaces.......2006-02-14

Coming on the heels of his often over-the-top (but frequently exciting) "Live at The Fillmore" album, "Tears of Joy" marks a likely highpoint in Ellis's multifaceted career as a bandleader. With the possible exception of his final band (well-caught on the Koch Records re-issue of "Live at Montreux") this particular lineup is one of most beloved by Ellis's fans, as it marks the US debut of Bulagarian pianist extraordinaire Milcho Leviev (whose "Bulgarian Bulge" in a nearly uncountable 33 and 36/16 meter is nonetheless played with devil take the hindmost enthusiasm by the band). The charts, particularly the epic "Strawberry Soup" show Ellis's most sophisticated pallette to date, as he augments the band with a string section and frequently uses mini-concertante groupings against big unisons. Besides the leader's pyrotechnical trumpeting, there's plenty of solo space given to the rest of the band, especially Leviev, trombonist Jim Sawyer and sax player Fred Seldon and the rhythm section of Ralph Humphrey, Ron Dunn and Lee Pastora always propel the charts with a surprisingly subtle swing (given that almost nothing on the two CDs is in 4/4).
I saw Ellis live many times between 1972 and 1975; it's still a shame that this most unique of American big band leaders still has not recieved the acclaim which he deserved for making music as heard on this CD.

My opinion: this is the bands best...don goes from trumpet to drums and joins in fours with 2 other drummers, it's awesome!
If your in to odd time signatures, every tune is different. Highly recommend this one!

A Joyful Noise.......2005-11-15

We are all fortunate that this has been reissued. The post-war era was rough on big bands. Ellis was one of a handful of innovators who dragged the format into the next epoch, with spectacular success. Known for time signatures which require complex algorithms to decipher, there is much more here to enjoy than mere cleverness. This music takes you through the entire emotional spectrum, weaving smoothly from point to point. It is smart, complex, and dense - truly extraordinary music. And those drummers!

Fine CD mastering.......2005-07-19

Everybody else has told you how great the album is, and they are absolutely right. It's a shame there are only 5 stars available! I just wanted to comment that the CD mastering is very faithful to the original album. Bravo to Wounded Bird, and it's great to see that Fillmore is next!

Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

These cd's are a great set of varied classical music. Pavane is my favorite. Additionally, Classical Chillout 2 offers theme music from Harry Potter and it is very well done.

Schizophrenic Album.......2007-06-27

The two disks in this set are quite distinct. The first is vintage Jim Kweskin jug band music, but it is only 33 minutes long. Stingy. The second consists of 10 mostly well-known mostly sentimental songs sung soggily.

My rating is based on four stars for the first disk and zero stars for the second. I find it hard to relate the two glowing views posted above to the album that I heard.

I was wanderin' around a store, looking at books, picking up one and another and looking at it, then doin' the same with DVDs, then went to the CD section and looked here and there at and for this and that. Saw lots I wanted. Then thought to check, yet again, for Kweskin Jug Band -- and this was there! Guess what I did -- go ahead, guess. OK, I'll tell ya: I jumped for joy!

I picked up the vinyl of "Garden of Joy" when it was released in circa August, 1967 (even though I'm still not tall enough to be over 18, so couldn't possibly have done that). Gad! it was like reading a favorite nosepaper headline to see it again. I did what's called "scarfed" it. Strangely, or not, I had never heard "America," though a friend of years, of years ago, had it. Strangely (more likely), I've still not heard it: that's how good "Garden of Joy" is. Fun. Aw-reet! If

you'se a viper you might even remember it. If not, then you'll dig "Kaloobafack" (also). That's Fritz doin' the talkin.

Why are you wastin' time reading this!? Buy it, slip it in, an' try to not dance -- but don't step on the tumatuhs!

a lesser known treasure.......2007-03-07

As a kid, a promo LP of Jim Kweskin's America fell upon me. It was not the accustomed, but it gradually struck a deep chord. Many of the songs as performed by Kweskin, Muldaur, Lyman and company have stayed in my mind through the decades even though I haven't heard them in ages (haven't had a working record player to play that LP). I just discovered the reissue and look forward to hearing them other than in the mind's ear. The tone of the America album is peculiar. There is a tongue-in-cheek quality to a number of the performances, yet it's clear that they love the music, too. I would recommend tracks but fully seven of ten make my first cut. This is fine and interesting music, much of it from America's interwar years (that is, WWI and WWII).

What a find!.......2006-03-23

Stumbling across this set was magical for a number of reasons. Every few months, I would check the internet music sites for a reissue of Kweskin's "America" and it never showed up until... Likewise, for years, I had been trying to remember where I first heard "Minglewood (Blues)" and "If You're a Viper". Ka-Ching! So many wishes granted in one package. Two sides of one of the most estoteric musicians of the sixties and both wonderful. Someone make a movie on the life of Gus Cannon and maybe we'll have a brief rebirth of jug band music up in here.

What a welcome rediscovery!.......2006-01-17

I'm referring to Jim Kweskin's America, which I had feared I would not hear again for many a year. My old lp and tapes are lost, and this is the first reissue I've seen. What deep healing music!

It's an odd repackaging. The old Jim Kweskin before the reborn man, quite a contrast to say the least. The old Jim sings on Garden of JOy, the new man on America.

I don't believe America is for the casual listener, unless he's ready for quite a deep transformation. "Are they all 'in the Spirit'?" my new wife asked me when I recently played it for the two of us. Afterwards she announced herself totally healed of a deep malaise she'd been suffering. I heard it anew myself. It always sounds different to me. Sometimes my thoughts will come crowding in and the "old-timey" music seems suddently far away, and I feel guilty. But I relax and open up again and it's as powerful as ever. It's the saddest, most joyful, far-ranging, profoundest music of America ever sung. Unbelievable that it hasn't reached a larger audience -- but then, maybe it has and people still don't know how to talk about it.

A great selection of music. Severson's performance is outstanding. Sound reproduction is exceptionally good. If you enjoy trumpet you should have this CD

The Best of Both.......2005-12-24

This album really lets Severinson shine. I always felt he was underchallenged on the Tonight Show. And Kunzel is at his best here, too. If you like Doc and Erik, also give a listen to Big Band Hit Parade.

Amazing technic, but poor tone........2005-12-01

I listened to this cd and the technic is truly amazing. This guy is really good-BUT-he has that nasty jazz tone that doesn't do well in classical music. Especially disturbing is the Bach-Busoni Chaconne. Listen to the piano performance by Evgeny Kissin and you'll know what I mean. Good for motivation for brass students, but if you want some really good, sweet classical, go somewhere else.

Doc at his best!!.......2005-11-26

Of course, we all knew and loved Doc Severerinsen as the top shelf band leader fronting the top-shelf Tonight Show Band when Johnny was at the helm. But this collection shows Doc as he really is.....not "just" a top lead trumpet man, but indeed, a top trumpet player. He appproaches ALL music with a seriousness and respect that only a true musician can bring to a composition, no matter WHAT the genre. All great instrumentalists will tell you that the goal is to sound as much like the human voice as possible. As Doc approaches the Puccini suite, you understand what they mean. His technique is beyond category, able to deliver nuance and expression as any instrumentalist (and vocalist!) would ever hope to. This is a must for any music lover, and for any student of the trumpet.....time to go to school! And bring a lunch!

My family likes to put this disc in on shuffle and play name that tune. I wish they made more discs like this, only with more obscure works.

A Fabulous CD.......2004-10-14

The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

For the beginner. You will be surprised at how many of the 99 themes you recognize here. It is an easy introduction to classical music. Nice booklet too.

Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.
