4 out of 5 stars The sound of summer.... '77 (a good year).......2007-03-09

I used to have this on vinyl and it kind of disappeared from mind in the 1980's when vinyl went out of fashion. I originally purchased this because I was an Eagles and Joe Walsh fan - and Jay Ferguson was one of those talented guys (like Joe Vitale) who were on the edge of that phenomenon. Anyway, have recently purchased this CD and his next offering (the equally good) "Real Life Aint That Way" and yes, I remember why I liked them both in the first place.
Jay's vocals are strong and smooth without being too Glenn Frey country. Love the piano work and Joe Walsh's guitar is just great as always (and works well with these songs). The title track takes me straight back to the innocent summer of 1977 and growing up listening to cool rock/pop music without a care in the world (pity about the sad hairdos of the time - love the boofy look Jay, hee, hee). Thunder Island made him a huge success that year and deservidly so. The rest of the album is nice and melodic and works well (even though I had to play it a couple times to reaquaint myself with the tunes). Soulin' is great, as is Babylon (reminscant of America's "Woman Tonight"). I also like "Happy Birthday Baby" - a sweet soppy love song and "Love is Cold" another ballad. Only the two heavily reggage influenced tracks of "Cozumel" and "Nightshift" don't do it for me - but if you like reggage they are as good as anything Sting can do (personal preference I suppose).
If you like this try also The Eagles - either "One of These Nights" or "Hotel California" (or as a cop out "Their Complete Greatest Hits").
Jay used to be a member of Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne, but I can't honestly say I have ever heard any of his earlier stuff (so won't comment in that regard - as some reviewers seem to think he went soft or sold out - so what, man has to make a living doesn't he.)

4 out of 5 stars past pleasures.......2007-02-12

Entire album brings back the innocent times of the mid- to late seventies, at which, I was nineteen and times were great. The music that Jay presents is that of lost horizons and island beauties. One cannot escape the summertime feeling when the songs are played. Fully, and thoroughly, enjoyed the purchase.

2 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2006-08-08

This is kind of an embarassment to Jay Ferguson. Why? It is a total sell out to just make money.

Jay was in Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne. These were cool groups. He is far from cool on this album (what a fruity looking picture on the cover. Nice hair do Jay!).

Setting that aside, Thunder Island was big in its time and totally reminiscent of the early 80's. Babylon is a re working of a far grittier Jo Jo Gunne tune. SOulin is ok

This is trying to cash in on the Jimmy Buffet vibe. But Jay was a legit rocker so it is hard to take seriously. Its like if Richie Blackmore sang in a barbershop quartet or Keith Moon sang Brill Building songs.

It is unnatural but definetly a guilty pleasure. Going from Run, run, run to Thunder Island...please!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM.......2003-08-10

Finally Jay or his record company is releasing his solo projects. Unlike Randy California's blistering solo album Kapt. Kopter, Jay has stayed on the mello side {not taking anything away from the late great Randy, because I love his work also}, but it's nice to get mello every once in awhile. The guitar work of Joe Walsh is is unquestionable some of his best, along with the work on the soon to be released All Alone in the End Zone. My good friend Leigh Crutchfield who has had the chance to meet and interview Jay, says All Alone was by Jay's on admission his best solo prodject. Cudos to both the albums and it's about time they were released.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Back In Print!!.......2002-12-19

I'm so glad to finally get this cd after being out of print for so long.THUNDER ISLAND is definately the best song on this cd,but there are several other good tunes to be heard on this cd such as LOVE IS COLD. Joe Walsh plays lead guitar on this album and does a great job. Ferguson lays down a very smooth style of an upbeat mixture of keyboard and electric guitar oriented rock and roll. I think this is Jay Ferguson second best cd behind 1979's REAL LIFE AIN'T THIS WAY.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars!.......2006-02-28

I loved this movie, and I love the soundtrack too. It's beautiful. We listen to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but definitely needs "Dream On".......2005-08-24

I am no expert on music; however, I believe that this soundtrack was a good one. I can listen to all 7 songs, I agree with the rest of you that there should be an 8th in the form of Aerosmith's "Dream On." I absolutely love this movie and the music to it. If you love the movie then you need to have this soundtrack.

3 out of 5 stars It's Missing Dream On????!!! .......2005-08-23

I was all set to get the CD until I heard it and found out there was no "Dream On." What???!!! How could they? The best song in the movie, the one they used for the trailers and TV spots and in the credits, and they don't have it? That was the only reason I wanted the CD. Even though I like "Don't Fear the Reaper" by the BLue Oyster Cult. But I don't understand how they could not add "Dream On".

Even so, I still love the movie. Thank God I have the DVD to listen to "Dream On" in the credits all I want.

3 out of 5 stars Spectacular movie, but the soundtrack is somewhat bland..........2005-08-02

I was disappointed that this CD did not include the theme music played when the US tied Sweden (two staccato eigth notes, quarter rest, two staccato eighth notes, quarter rest, etc.).

Nevertheless...

Three notes. Over and over. And over. Mark Isham has made a good attempt at composing varations on a theme which consists of just three notes. During the earlier parts of the movie it works, as we are being introduced to the characters and the journey they're following. Isham was fantastic with the music he wrote for that ten minutes of tension and bedlam that occurred while the US was hanging on to their 4-3 lead.

But when time finally ran out and the game officially won, we hear those same. Three. Notes. And it lacked meat. It sounded like a small chamber orchestra. It was very disappointing. By the time the movie is over, we feel like those three notes have been beaten into our skull with a broken hockey stick. A worthy effort, but an unsuccessful one.

Also disappointing was the fact that the "Miracle" track on this CD was "summarized." All we hear is the music for the goal scored by Buzz Schneider, then a Soviet goal, then the buildup of the final 10 minutes, then the ending. Again, where was Mark Johnson's tying goal (the same theme as when the US tied Sweden)?

Still, it's a must-own for anyone who is insanely addicted to the movie like I am. It's just too bad they weren't able to get John Williams for the score.

1 out of 5 stars The Power is Missing.......2005-05-11

A great movie, with great music, and great script. Casting was superb.

I watch this with my 8 year old grandson who is empowered by its magic and miracle.

I just jumped on net to order soundtrack and found that Dream On is missing. What a tradegy to cheat the public of such a song that was the eternal identifier and the guts of the movie.

Somebody screwed up. Where are they working now?

Bill
