Amazon.com essential recording
Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire" fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with Fire"), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning ("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably "Fade to Black," a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
A gem!.......2007-07-21
This album is, hands down, one of the best albums ever produced IMHO. Every song has its story and even though they are all different they are all powerful. I fail to see, hear, or feel any weakness in this album; it is a complete work of art. The only other albums that come close to this one are Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and The Beatle's Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; the comparison of this album to these two speaks for itself. A real gem.
great second album..a masterpiece.......2007-07-15
This album has been one of my favorites for years. I became a fan of Metallica back in late 1989. I had always heard of them and knew of them as heavy metal. I was always up for hearing something heavy and this album surely delivers.
Fight Fire With Fire starts out like a nice classical piece with what sounds like three guitars. It's a sweet melody that fades away into a nice rising note that crashes into the riff. This song is fast and heavy and really distills war into its first line: Do unto others as they've done to you/ But what the hell is this world coming to? It ends with furious riffing and a giant explosion sound effect. And even before that fades away Ride the Lightning starts up. This is a great song with a fairly simple structure that the next few albums would make more difficult to play but more fun to listen to.
For Whom the Bell Tolls, while not a hit, is still played by many rock stations and has become a live staple. It's a great song with one of the best riffs ever written. Fade to Black starts out nice and slow and has a nice heavy chorus. This is the beginning of their progression from the standard thrash that was so prevalent on their first album. It's too bad for all the fans who think they sold out with the black album when on this album they were doing the exact same thing!! It's just that on later albums they took it a step further.
Trapped Under Ice is a nice short 4 minute thrasher that never really lets up. It's a bit of weak song compared to the rest, but a good song for head banging. Escape is probably the worst song they ever did (and the St Anger album) and the writing is a bit amateurish here. I didn't know at first why I didn't like this but i guess its the backing vocals that make it sound like a pop song. UGH!
To make up for this bad song the very next song, Creeping Death, is my very favorite track. This is pretty much about the killing of the first born as told in Exodus 22 I believe. This is a nice high energy song that's all the more powerful when played live. A note here, the best live version of this is from Tushino Airfield in Russia from September 1991. It's available on the Sad But True CD single I believe.
The Call of Ktulu is a great Cliff Burton instrumental that starts nice and quiet and builds to a big heavy song. I always liked this thing and the ending is always sweet and a great way to finish off this amazing album.
So this is 5 stars. Without question!
Some of their best work (pre-sellout).......2007-07-10
I do own this album. I bought it on CD and cassette back when they were released. And to this day, this is one of their best albums. It's just too bad that they they all had to turn into a bunch of a-holes and sign on to be monkey boys for the RIAA, suing children and P2P networks.
Ride the Lightning with Metallica.......2007-07-09
For sheer metal mayhem, there are fewer CDs available that are better than this one. Ride the Lightning features some of the finest Metallica material they produced. From Creeping Death to For Whom the Bell Tolls, this is a CD not to be missed. A five star metal masterpiece.
Great.......2007-07-06
This CD is classic Metallica ALL the CD's shine for a million different reasons. Each one is different and each one is great.

classic music CD.......2007-06-27
The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.
Good for beginners.......2007-02-15
It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.
Great mix.......2007-02-14
All the best composers! Over an hour of music. A samble of the greatest pieces.

Good selection.......2005-10-02
I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.
thunderous applause.......2005-08-31
This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!
Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06
I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.
You will like this!.......2004-02-19
I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection and some were better than others.
This CD is at the top of them all. They may be short, but not that short. Wondrous music.
I can almost guarantee that you will like this music.
Well worth the price!
Good for the novice.......2002-06-08
The recordings on this disc are pretty good. However, the editors selected only the *loud* parts, as indicated by the title. I was pretty disappointed to find that the pieces are, in many cases, edited to reflect the most famous themes, etc, instead of including the whole work. In general, I would recommend this to the classical music novice, or someone who wants to expand their knowledge of classical music in general. Those who already are familiar with these pieces will probably feel gypped.

wonderful.......2007-07-22
These CD's were wonderful. When I drive in the Sierra Nevada mountians I want something peaceful but not boring. I love, love, love it.
Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc........2005-02-23
If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.
I am glad I bought this one.......2003-04-25
I listen to this cd to relax and it is so soothing. It starts with The blue Danube, which is my favorite. But the rest of the songs do not disapoint.
Great Music as usual.......2002-10-08
This is great recording,
I enjoy listening to it
veru much. This is a
compilation of all the
favorite waltzes by
the Strauss family, that
one might hear at a
New Year's eve concert
of the Vienna Philharmonic...
All waltzes and Polkas are

A gem!.......2001-10-29
Who else knows Strauss better than Viennese? I attest that no other orchestra in the world plays Strauss better than the Vienna Philharmonic. Their light sound is exactly what the composer wanted, and it really makes other clumsy, heavy attempts by some other orchestras like Berlin and Chicago seem pathetic.
As far as the content of these CDs go, they are fantastic. They have every waltz, march, and polko of Strauss II that you could possibly want, as well as a nice addition of "Radetzky March" by the composer's father. If you are looking for a Johann Strauss Jr. CD, get this one!

Lizzy at their best.......2007-07-26
I don't like dragging out my reviews . So simply put ... this is Thin Lizzy's finest studio cd . It is also their hardest rockin' cd. This has the Lizzy debut of the excellent John Sykes on guitar. Every song is a good one . Cold Sweat , Heart Attack , Baby Please Don't Go , Thunder and Lightning and the rest of em . A great cd from start to finish . Buy it !!!!
Lizzy Goes Metal.......2007-05-12
The addition of John Sykes did alot to make this one of my favorite Lizzy albums; The songwriting is strong, and the band really sound inspired w/it's new direction. Sykes, who has a style similar to the 'metal' Gary Moore and Dio's once own shred god Vivian Campbell, is in amazing form here; As one of my biggest early influences, Sykes energizes every song with some seriously blistering guitarwork; 'Baby Please Don't Go' is filled with all sorts of guitar fireworks, most of which still hold up even today. Coupled with the lyrical intelligence of Lynott(not to mention his bass playing, which seems to be taken for granted alot of the time...), the underrated drumming of Downey, and 2nd axeman Gorham, 'Thunder and Lightning' just may be one of the most overlooked rock/metal albums of all time; It seems hardly anyone even knows about this album, or chose to ignore it. And it's a shame they didn't get to progress from here with this line-up. R.I.P, Phil...Your last work was some of your greatest!!!
this cd is great!.......2007-05-10
Very hard! good songs, john Sykes is incredible, THE SUN GOES DOWN is the "adios" of Phil!
Some quality stuff here..........2006-09-26
Is it the best Thin Lizzy release? No
Am I glad I purchased this? Yes
Does it have some quality Lizzy stuff Yes!
I'd much rather have given this release 3.5 stars.
Big complaint- The sound quality on the Wounded bird reissue really drags this disc down.
The rundown- Okay, there is some generic "metal" stuff that goes on here.
At times the band is trying to mine territory done a tad better by Judas Priest or other 80's hard rock/heavy metal bands.
Took me awhile to warm up to this disc.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I enjoyed 1980's "Chinatown" and 1981's "Renegade" albums a bit more than this one.
That said we have some great tracks here.
"Thunder and Lightning", "This is the one", and "Bad Habits" will get you going. "The Sun goes down" slows things down but is a great smoldering track.
This was the last Lizzy disc I purchased to round out my collection.
This disc also took me the longest to digest and get into.
Thin Lizzy's Swan Song.......2006-04-04
Thunder & Lightning. (1983)
**** 1/2.
I must be fortunate. I own the Vertigo Records CD issue of this album. I had to special order it in 1991 to the tune of about 25 bucks. From some of the previous reviews it appears Wounded Bird Records has not done a quality job on the reissue.
The addition of John Sykes (guitar) did wonders for this LP. It infused additional songwriting skills and importantly - passion. Most people can agree Phil was worn out by this time due to drugs and pressures of life in a rock & roll band. Mr. Sykes brought some much needed energy and Phil and the band responded with thier strongest studio album in years.
Some of the Robertson era purists who think Lizzy was all about guitar harmonies lambast this record. It is not Jailbreak, Fighting or any other album. I for one am glad its not. I find the dual guitar harmonies of the 1974-1978 era rather boring. I like passion and uuumph in my music. The most commercial era of Lizzy had neither of those precious elements. This record though - does.
Longtime fans of Lizzy know they had serveral different styles and incarnations. Listen to "Thin Lizzy" (1971) and you'll get it. This record is proof of that.
Personal favorite cuts here are: "The Sun Goes Down," "Cold Sweat," "Baby Please Don't Go," and "Heart Attack." The only weak cut here is "Bad Habits." What saves it is that Phil is almost confessing his life has not been good for him.
In the final view, to someone who is reading this review and has only heard "Jailbreak." This sure ain't that record. This is an album that screams more 80s hard rock. Phil, Scott, Darren, John and Brian wind this record with gusto. If you appreciate full-tilt rockin' albums with passion - I think you'll like this one.
I sure do, and still do 18 years on after first hearing it. It holds up.

This soundtrack to the movie features an astonishing array of blues artists from three generations. Recorded during one long night at NYC's Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 7, 2003, the electricity is in the air and on stage. While it may not have been the finest blues show in history, the collection of founding fathers such as David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Buddy Guy, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Larry Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Solomon Burke, and the ubiquitous B.B. King along with their spiritual offspring (Gregg Allman, John Fogerty, and Steven Tyler) and some usual suspects like Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, and Keb' Mo', makes it arguably the most significant blues session ever captured on film.
Beginning acoustic, the double disc builds momentum and volume as we hear the blues mutate to electric and finally hip-hop with Chuck D. exploding on a rap version of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom." The crackling house band led by drummer Steve Jordan provides foundation for gritty, roof-raising pieces like the unusual collaboration between former New York Doll David Johansen and guitarist Sumlin on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." Not all of the film's music is included but there are enough magnificent performances for established blues fans and to entice those first experiencing the genre's abundant riches. --Hal Horowitz
Customer Reviews:
excellent!!.......2007-03-23
Great to see so many talented artists come together. Awesome music and rhythyms. Also great to listen to while working out!
Great DVD.......2007-03-10
This autobiography of the blues shows the past and the present of a music steeped in African American culture and rich musical history. Legends of the past perform live with the greats of the past decade presenting the musical form at its fullest potential. The movie incorporates benhind the scenes footage and rare clips of blues artist such as Son House, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson crafting the art of Blues music. Performances like India Ari singing Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday and Guy's rendition of Cant be Satisfied by Muddy Waters, inspire me to watch them over and over again. Lighting in a Bottle is more than just an event; it is a celebration of the life and breath of the music that has inspired countless other genres and has captured the emotion of represion and pentence. Lighting in a body is a journey worth taking.
The perfect CD to Drive too!.......2006-08-19
This CD is the actual performance of the DVD, which I also have and play at least once a week. You can't possibly get bored with this and you won't want to miss one song. However I highly recommend you get the 2 disc companion, so you know the history behind the making of this well produced and presented concert. Abosolutely genius!!!!!!!
Great variety of artists.......2006-08-14
This event certainly had a star studded lineup and there are many highlights with Buddy Guy, Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes. Angelique Kidjo, BB King among the many winning performances. The only negative is a poor rap antiwar piece towards the end that just isn't a celebration of the blues or the many diverse artists that produce the blues. There may be a forum for this but this ain't it! The many highlights drown out this so 4.5 Stars.
If you enjoy the blues, you need this cd.......2006-03-26
Great music, good mix of artists. Could have done without a rapper trying to turn "boom boom" into an anti-war statement.

A little too much treble.......2007-07-12
I love the energy of the songs on this album, but I must criticize the mix. There is just too much treble, making this album painful to listen to on headphones. For this reason alone I am docking 1 star from an otherwise 5-star album. I hope that on their next album they can afford to hire a better studio and engineer.
Five Reasons Why I Didn't Like This Album.......2007-05-14
1. In high-school, I used to play in the marching band. Although the furtive pleasures to be found in the dark corners of a band bus still make me smile, I never found the football half-time shows that we played every autumn to be anything short of annoying. "Is this music anyone really wants to hear?" I wondered.
2. I am a teacher, and although I love my kids, they are also my job. The age groups that I've taught have run the gamut from five years old to fifty, and I've learned one very important lesson about myself. If I don't have to listen to prepubescent girls clapping their hands and chanting inanities about who's "number one," then I'm happy.
3. I love the poor little guy, but because he is a tragic figure (no matter how you look at it), a sad and bald little Sisyphus, Charlie Brown's theme song always (and I mean always) depresses me. Likewise with the theme song to "The Little House on the Prairie," although I can't as easily explain that one.
4. Like most people, I really DON'T want to go to your niece's piano recital.
5. In addition to containing all of the above elements, I found this album to be far too forced for me. If you want unrelenting rambunctiousness and corn-fed cheeriness, I won't think less of you for picking this album up, but I found it too much, the grating chaos of a musical garbage disposal. I don't mind a record trying to make me happy, but I prefer it to be tonally persuasive and compositionally compelling, rather than attempting to make its point through sheer exuberance. "The Go! Team" may have a lot of fans, but I'm skipping this half-time show.
Strange little booger.......2006-10-02
Eccentric, original, distinct and fun. Yet, spectacular 'tis not.
It goes down easy, especially at thirty minutes. It's headstrong in its peculiar style, and has an odd obsession with brass -- listen to that fanfare motif hiding under "Bottle Rocket"!.. just wonderful -- and harmonicas (?!). The vocals are as unique as anything I've heard, and generally speaking for the better, providing a musical experience that, in all, damned, honesty, I cannot compare to anything I've heard before. That, when I think about it, is a pretty extraordinary feat.
But it ain't all radiant goodness, friends. While it's little else than good times while it's rolling about with glee, it abruptly ends. And then it's done. Over. Gone. "What, is that it?" And, mind you, this question pops up every time I listen to it, so I predict I've allowed myself the due time to absorb it properly. None of the tunes are particularly striking, sans my favorite on the disc, the freaking ENCHANTING 'Huddle Formation', which is surely one of the most offbeat, giddy pieces of music I've heard in a decade. From my experience, most the people I've happily showcased the gem for have been either weirded out or confusingly unimpressed, but I shun them for such distaste, as is the correct thing to do. Moving on, the nature of the album elaborated, barely... The first track, "Panther Dash", pretty striking, with dazzling hooks and the introduction of the oft revisited harmonica. Yet, in only three minutes, it practically outstays its welcome, bringing forth little new ideas after the one minute mark; not a good sign. Then, on the other side of the spectrum, you've got a tune like "Feel good by Numbers", a waste of time and devoid of any spark even some of the more moderately amusing songs possess. When you release an album as short as thirty minutes, and end up throwing a song of such dreck in the mix (even if it's only two minutes), the more negative implications begin to shine forth.
Certainly it's not out of the question that I'm being too harsh on the album, but despite all of its innovative vibes, I'd feel a spear of guilt stabbing my chest if I were to rate this anything higher than a three. Three and a half, maybe, but even that could be pushing it. By no means is this not worth hearing, and those more fixated on creative virtue than anything just might be in heaven, but I prefer a little more, lasting oomph to my music. Good stuff, but little more, me thinks.
Good, but...........2006-08-13
Ok, I love this cd to death. It's cool that the US version has "We Just Won't Be Defeated" and "Hold Yr Terror Close," but in all honesty you're better off paying for the import version. As much trouble as their label went through to clear all the samples from the original UK release, they couldn't get them all. And songs like "The Power is On," "Bottle Rocket," and "Huddle Information" really suffer without the female MC samples on the verses. Trust me, buy the import instead. It's pure genius.
it's hard to listen to this album without smiling........2006-08-07
the go! team are so much fun. cheesy daytime television music looped with old-school hip hop and a cheerleader shouting over it. if you deny enjoying this album, you simply have no soul. the go! team stole the show at lollapalooza 2006, had about 50,000 people dancing and singing like no one was watching, and held more energy than any band i've ever seen in my life. the go! team are amazing in every aspect.

The very, very best Johann Strauss Jr. recordings.......2006-08-14
No orchestra in the world has ever known how to play the waltzes of Johann Strauss Jr. as well as the Wiener Philharmoniker . . . and no conductor has ever led the Philharmoniker in this repertoire in as perfect a Strauss style as Willi Boskovsky (the orchestra's long-time concertmaster). The sine qua non of Strauss playing, the famous Viennese lilting afterbeats (where the second of the three beats of the waltz tempo comes infinitesimally early, rather than in strict time) is here. Tempos perfectly "in the groove" are here. Accept no substitutes: in this repertoire, this combination of performers is the absolute gold standard.

Simply, Awesome.......2007-04-30
This work is pure and simple all the time. All the songs make sense too.
This Band Defies You To Dislike Them!.......2007-04-16
It can't be done, unless you hate all the elements which make up a good pop record. Ian Broudie and his band created music that sinks into your brain and leaves a mark like a barrel of wine spilled on a white shag carpet. 'Life of Riley' should be distilled and marketed under the brand name Catchy Cola, coming in a very close second after 'Three Lions', a song so melodic it forced me to love it in spite of not caring a tinkers' cuss about Football, American and British definitions of the word included. Not to say the 'Seeds do not have their introspective side! 'Waiting For Today to Happen' is somewhat fatalistic and bleak, a fact that will escape almost everyone until they get past the beautiful music long enough to reflect upon the lyrics. If you're looking for something to validate your drearily held belief that life is Misery and no mortal has ever suffered the misunderstandings the Clods and Philistines have thrust upon your sensitive soul, keep looking. This CD is for people who are happiest when they're happy.
Great compilation!.......2006-11-10
This compilation has the famous songs (Pure, All I want, You showed me, Sense...) and others less famous. Great music from the British group!
This band is amazingly chilled...........2006-06-02
The lightning seeds are a great band. Their songs can best be described as airy and light, makes you feel all fluffy, soft and warm inside. I love this band. When I have a hard time choosing something to listen to I just pop in the lightning seeds and it makes my day. I absolutely adore the lead singer's voice as well. They're simple and kind of popish, but they're a joy to listen to. Highly recommended.
Like They Always Do..........2005-09-23
The Lightning Seeds is one of my favourite bands... And this album just proves why. Like You Do is a collection of britpop at it's best. If you are wondering what The Seeds are about, this is the perfect album to start off with. One spin and I garuntee you'll be hooked - and no doubt will this album make you wonder what is wrong with "pop" nowadays. This album is truly timeless. I can still listen to it after 8 years and the songs just don't sound dated at all. It's just a shame that The Seeds are no more. Give your senses a treat and get this album. You won't be disappointed!

Every once in a while, Disney pairs a score-heavy soundtrack to a major film with something a little lighter. Cars doesn't fit the bill--its soundtrack is star-studded (John Mayer, Sheryl Crow, James Taylor) and its score, by Randy Newman, is about as accessible as they come. So chalk up Fast Tracks--Lightning McQueen's lighthearted and wholly likable companion piece to Cars: The Soundtrack--to the outsized persona with which his creators gifted him. McQueen, a pedal-to-the-metal kind of character, has tunes coming out his mighty tailpipe: between Gunnar Nelson's "Rocking Little Roadster," Joy Lynn White's "You Can't Catch Me," and Kevin Montgomery's earnest, dust-coated cover of Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again," he takes classic rock, rockabilly, and straight-up country for a spin; elsewhere, pop, folk, and blues fasten their seatbelts. It's a slightly twang-heavy melange, but McQueen rotates his sounds as reliably as his tires--credit him (or, more accurately, the corporate folks who keep his engines running) with concocting a roll-down-the-windows-and-shout worthy soundtrack of his own. --Tammy La Gorce

100 Listens and counting. . ........2007-05-15
I bought this for my 1-year-old who loves the movie to keep him occupied in the car. When it first arrived, I was actually a bit disappointed at the lack of between-song dialogue. McQueen and Mater exchange just a line or two at the beginning of each song (but, for some strange reason, not the first song). I figured my son wouldn't be into it, but apparently there's enough of the characters for him, because for the past few months, EVERY time we go in the car, he yells "Mater! Mater!" until I put this CD on.
The music isn't bad at all -- it consists of accessible, catchy rockabilly and country-rock tunes with cutesy, humorous lyrics. It's great for singalongs. Unfortunately, the constant play is getting a little old. Actually, the fact that it isn't driving me completely nuts at this point, especially considering that it isn't my favorite style of music, is a huge point in its favor!
My only real complaint, aside from wishing there were more dialogue, is that the dialogue is recorded at a much lower level than the music. I find myself cranking up the volume when the characters start talking and then turning it back down when each song starts.
Ok songs.......2007-01-17
Not as impressive as we had hoped. My son loves the Cars soundtrack, so i thought he would like this, but it never gets listened to.
Cars: Lightning McQueen's Fast Tracks.......2006-08-28
This CD is an incredible companion for Cars. The interaction with Mater and Company is enjoyable. All the car music recorded from several generations makes it a must for vehicle and music lovers alike. This is a "must own CD" for a trip with the family.
Fun.......2006-08-10
We bought this CD with the Cars soundtrack and it is a great CD. My son loves it because it has the voices of Lighting and Mater who introduce most of the songs. We listened while on a road trip and all loved it.

this is an ok cd. if you like the music on the orginal soundtrack (which i highly recommend) you will will most likely enjoy this. i didnt like it at first when i first started playing it, but it did grow on me. i think i would have liked it better if i had not listened to the soundtrack from cars beforehand. really, there is no comparing the two.
honestly, it makes a pretty good music choice if you have a long car trip to make w small children, or even a small one w small children :~)
