The Future Bible Heroes' first full-length since 1997's Memories of Love is a loose concept album about the undead and other everlasting life forms. Designed to appeal to indie rockers and club kids alike, the band features three complementary talents. Wordsmith Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Field, 6ths, Gothic Archies) remains endlessly quotable and droll. Chris Ewen's synth pop recalls a more twee Bauhaus or a wittier Cure. Finally, Claudia Gonson delivers the same kind of breathy vocals that broke hearts on the Magnetic Fields' 1999 69 Love Songs box set. "I'm a Vampire" ought to be a dance-floor hit ("I am what I am / And I'm impossibly glam"). "The World Is a Disco Ball" posits that "we're little mirrors, one and all." These tunes are rich with comedic pathos, as well as romantic empathy. --Jillian Steinberger

a Sci-Fi Score -- takes some getting use to..........2006-11-15
Soon other songs tunes started to seep into my brain. After a month or two I finally admitted I did, in fact, enjoy the songs, but maybe not the whole thing. Eventually it became very clear that I listened to the thing twice a day. So, well, I guess it could be an amazing gem of an album. Another month passed, it became the most played in my itunes (and I had 5 stars attached to all the actual songs, but not the interludes). So I checked 5 stars for those interludes that I haden't really noticed and came to realize that Eternal Youth is just as important of a Stephin Merrit album as the next (or better, "Smash the Beauty Machine" is a perfect song). However, if you are expecting Magnetic Fields, take note, this one is titled "Future Bible Heroes" hense the departure in aesthetic.
Buffy, this Spike's for you.......2005-04-30
It's not all about vampires, but many songs are, and most of the rest touch upon time passing, death looming, and, of course, love. Like a lot of Lou Reed, sometimes these songs are as musically sweet as ABBA, and yet they're edgy, sometimes dark, and mordant. "Losing Your Affection" still has the power to make me smile after two years of regular play. But behind the exuberant word play, the underlying bittersweet sentiment remains true for anyone who has ever been deeply in love and had it returned. "Thousand Lovers in a Day" just seemed perverse on first hearing. On rehearing, it became a mournful and defiant response to the recognition that youth is rushing by way faster than we want. One or two tracks remain a bit weak, but for me (an admitted Merrittmaniac and Buffybrain) this CD remains one that sometimes I just have to play right-this-minute.
Merritt's Done Better..........2005-03-20
"Losing Your Affection" just seemed to be a dull pop song that had the same noise throughout all of its four and a half minutes. "Doris Daytheearthstoodstill" and "I'm A Vampire" were probably the only two songs that really stuck with me. I'd actually give the album five stars if I were just looking at "I'm A Vampire", which is one of Merritt's best pop songs. But it's not one song that makes an album, and sadly, the album didn't have much gas left after that. "Find An Open Window" had good lyrics, but awful music.
"Eternal Youth" ends with "The World Is A Disco Ball", which is an okay song, but it's just not enough.
And as for Claudia Gonson being the vocalist on all the songs... I'm not complaining. She has a wonderful voice, but the music in this album is what ruins it. I do hope the next Future Bible Heroes album has Claudia Gonson on all the songs- just with better music.
The only Merritt album I have ever returned.......2004-04-22
More Love Songs?.......2004-04-20
"Losing Your Affection" is a song that flirts with electropop but doesn't go all the way. It is music that out of sync with anything going on right now, and seems trapped in some apolitical new wave bubble. I look at some of the pictures of babies and Hawaiian kitsch and just imagine that this album takes place in neverland. The song "Doris Day The Earth Stood Still" lays there like some primodial ooze, with its psychedelic wanderings. This is music that doesn't want to grow up. "I'm A Vampire" is probably the strongest track on the album. It sounds like like a bad vacation in Toyko: a take on "Don't Touch Me There" by The Tubes. This music is the sort that didn't have the guts to be punk and was too iffy to be new wave. I could imagine myself reading Jacqueline Susanne while listening to this. The record explores some weird soundscapes and abandons the idea of "youth" in the midst.

Transcendent Beauty.......2004-08-14
I am surprised that no one else has reviewed this album. Most likely it's because it's not terribly well known.
Anyway, this is an absolutely gorgeous sampling of Russian Orthodox Church music. The Italian baroque influences are evident in some of the pieces, but the rich Russian chordal style always comes through.
The voices are transcendent, and truly evoke a sense of the sacred. If you are ever feeling angry, sad, hurt or stressed out, this is the perfect album to put you at ease. Track 19 will take your breath away.

Album Description
"These aren't your father's classical musicians. They're young, dressed-down and prefer Depeche Mode to, say, the church choir." - Dallas ObserverNeo Camerata has been described as "changing the future of chamber music" with a revolutionary combination of virtuoso musicians, riveting original music, and a piquant sense of humor - creating what critics have called a "genre busting," "technically impressive," "emotionally stirring," and "totally cool and amazing" experience. Since their debut performance in January 2004, the group has been going where no other classical group has ventured, performing their original new classical music on the same bill as pop acts like Bobby McFerrin, singer/song-writer Ben Jelen (whose 2004 effort on Maverick Records Give It All Away debuted at #1 on Billboard's Top Heat-Seekers Chart), Rejane Magloire (Technotronic) and in places like New York's Cutting Room, the Cannes Film Festival and Sir Elton John's Vienna Life Ball. All of the music on this album was composed by the group's founder and violist, Mark Landson. His music is at once very emotional and intelligent, and has been self-described as "a journey of mind and emotion". This unique album appeals to a broad spectrum of classical listeners as well as those on the periphery of classical music. It is the first album of truly classical music that can be considered classical-crossover. "Determined to provide an alternative to what he calls the `museum attitude' in classical music, Landson set out to write a different kind of classical music that appeals to more people... Landson combines ageless techniques of the classical genre - development of thematic material and structural cohesion, for example - with a distinctly contemporary edge. But not contemporary as in Elliott Carter or John Adams...'It's a lot more pop- or rock-oriented,' Landson says." - Baltimore Sun

Music to feed your soul.......2005-11-15
As a first grade teacher, I am always searching for new things to introduce my students to. We listened to Neo C's CD Monday morning, and the kids were mesmerized. It was certainly a nice transition to school from the weekend.
This CD is worth every penny you'll pay for it. It will recharge your batteries, relax your soul, and inspire your thoughts. Enjoy!
