5 out of 5 stars The staple of Live's career!.......2007-04-25

Okay, here's the classic "I Go Back" intro: Live's "Throwing Copper" brings me back to my sophomore year in high school, primarily whenever I hear "Selling the Drama" and "I Alone". I heard it plenty of times at high school parties and driving around with friends.

Here's another cheesy line: I can't define a masterpiece, but I know it when I hear it!

Well, that is precisely what this album is. Tight chords, strong lyrics, and great passion in each song. When you hear different songs from different times in Live's career, you can definitely pick up on the different sounds. "Throwing Copper" was quite anthemic, where you can't help but pump your fists in the air. Ed and the group seemed to get more spiritual in their lyrics with each album, especially "The Distance to Here" and "Birds of Pray". One could even say the songs here tend to be more dark and haunting, and I can totally agree. However, when one thinks of Live, more often than not, the one album that comes to mind is this one. One night, I was listening to this whole disc while trying to fall asleep. I can't remember when I did doze off, but I do remember waking up enough to hear "Pillar of Davidson", and from that point on, it became my favorite song on this disc, with it's slow-moving, haunting melody.

This is THE cd to start out with if you are just getting into Live right now. No CD collection is complete without it.

1 out of 5 stars Worst band of all time.......2006-09-09

These guys are the biggest joke in rock music. All of these 5 star reviews are an even bigger joke. Ed Kowizsychik(SP) or however you want to spell it sounds as pathetic as he looks. This is garbage, plain & simple. Im glad radio is no longer saturated with their music. 20 years from now, no one will remember this group.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic brilliance........2006-08-20

While in college I must have listened to this CD over a thousand times. Finally someone must have gotten sick and tired of hearing it and it mysteriously vanished on me. I never raplaced it and now I see it's not even available by amazon. Thankfully it is still available used.
I'm not the biggest Live fan but this CD is a masterpiece by any standard.
If you haven't listened to Throwing Copper then you're missing out on a great piece of music. I rank this up there with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Not to say it sounds the same but it's just as good.
And it's almost impossible to listen to Throwin Copper without singing along. Great driving to and from work music.

5 out of 5 stars Throwing Copper is Music Gold.......2006-07-24

What a great album. I've always been a fan of this band, not a huge fan, but a fan nonetheless. This is probably the best Live has put out in my opinion. From beginning to end pretty much every track is good. There are a few not so good ones but mostly the entire album is great. My favorite songs from the album are "I Alone", "Lightning Crashes", "White Discussion", and "Waitress". Here are my track ratings...

1. Dam at Otter Creek - 9/10
2. Selling the Drama - 9.5/10
3. I Alone - 10/10
4. Iris - 9.5/10
5. Lightning Crashes - 10/10
6. Top - 9.5/10
7. All Over You - 9/10
8. Shit Towne - 9/10
9. T.B.D. - 9.5/10
10. Stage - 8/10
11. Waitress - 10/10
12. Pillar of Davidson - 8.5/10
13. White, Discussion - 10/10
14. (Hidden Track) - 7/10

Overall: 91% A-

It's a solid album by a really good band. I have other cd's by them but this one is probably the best they've done. If you enjoy the radio singles a lot and other stuff Live has done you will probably end up liking the entire "Throwing Copper" album. It's an album that delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Live Stood Out.......2006-06-24

I was a child of the 90's and this CD basically identfies the music I listened to when I was growing up. There was Nirvana, Pearl, STP, which all had great songs. Live, however, stood out from the pack of the grunge bands(Even thought Throwing Copper is not grunge) and impacted me tremendously. Obviously, there are mistakes on their album, and every album of theirs to follow, but TC really is passionate and powerful: from Ed's raw and passionate voice to every member of Live working together and contributing.

Their next couple of albums to follow are also incredible.

Product Description

Hailing from Sioux Falls, SD, Nick Thomas heads up his acoustic outfit, The Spill Canvas, while constructing anthems of brutally honest youthful angst. At the age of 15, after paying his dues in numerous local punk rock groups, Nick grabbed his acoustic and began to dive into a world completely different from his previous musical endeavors. He began to play assorted local venues simply under his name, Nick Thomas. But after a few successful shows, there was an increasing interest from other local musicians to join Nick on his solo journey. In turn, he tagged an actual band name so that his guest musicians wouldnt feel uncomfortable playing under his name. The project was called The Spill Canvas. ............................SONGLIST......1/aim snap fall 2/caterpillars 3/the tide 4/your evil soul 5/bracelets 6/the night will go as follows 7/all hail the heartbreaker 8/so much 9/3685 10/ black dress 11/under the covers 12/ sunsets and car crashes

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Unexpected acoustics, but still an impressive start.......2007-04-07

When I first bought Sunsets And Car Crashes, I had very little idea of what I was getting myself into. I had purchased "All Hail The Heartbreaker" from iTunes, and loved it. I had done a little more digging to find more information about the band's overall sound, and I decided it was time to check out the rest of the songs. What I had expected were the great young vocals I had heard, along with string-laden guitars and pained lyrics, but not nearly the acoustic involvement. What I got was, of course, a far cry from my expectations--but better.

I've been a fan of the emo genre for quite a few years now, having grown up listening to New Found Glory and Dashboard Confessional. I hadn't, however, experienced lyrics this hard-hitting, especially in songs about desperation and broken relationships, though the aforementioned bands have certainly treaded that ground time and time again. "Consider this song a testament of my devotion to your saccharine scent / And to be completely honest, you're not like all the rest," the album's main man, Nick Thomas, sobs to the girl of his dreams in "The Night Will Go On As Follows", while in the CD's title track he whispers "In case you were wondering, you are like a hurricane to me / Your violence is beautiful and your center sweet" in a croon reminiscent of Brand New's Jesse Lacey.

But it's not always such single-minded fidelity he focuses on. "Your Evil Soul" and "3685" slope even further downhill into the realm of suffering and dishonesty, while "The Tide" is a poignant acoustic piece telling the tale of three misguided children who never found compassion in their brief lives. It is definitely one of the best songs on the album, and though released as a single, didn't get nearly the acclaim it deserves.

In addition to lyrical and vocal ability, Thomas' guitar and bass playing ranges from a heavy thunder ("Caterpillars") to soft and pure acoustics ("Under the Covers" and "Aim Snap Fall", to name a few). It's hard to believe he was only fifteen when he wrote most of these songs, for they are both lyrically and musically far more adult. Although the album does have some weak points, namely the overkill of "Black Dresses" and a few clichéd lyrics thrown in with the original during "So Much", Sunsets And Car Crashes is one strong debut CD, and that's really all you can ask for.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-21

This CD is great! I wrote a review for one fell swoop and like I said on that one The Spill Canvas are fabulous! Their lyrics are emotional and relatable. The standout songs in my opinion are the tide, all hail the heartbreaker and black dresses. These songs are amazing. All the tracks are good, there isn't one that I dislike. I recommend sunsets and car crashes and one fell swoop to anyone who is interested!

5 out of 5 stars Great debut album!.......2006-03-16

I purchased the Spill Canvas' most recent album right away when I preview listened to it at a Hot Topic clothing store. I was estatic when I heard that they had a CD beofore that and bought it right away from amazon.com I couldn't have been happier.

Track 3, the tide, is flawless. The best song of theirs to date and is worth buying the album just for this song. It is brilliantly emotional. The chorus has the best lyrics to a song I've heard in a time. Track 11 is another great one!

If you liked thier second CD, do yourself a favor and pick up The Spill Canvas' first album, it's mainly accoustic but that's what makes it soo f'n great.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2005-12-10

i first heard "all hail the heart breaker," and i had to find out who the band was. The spill canvas differs from the normal, often negatively portrayed, "emo scene" because of the sincerity of the lyrics and the talented guitar playing. While the cd can easily become a favorite of the dashboard and starting line crowd, it also will appeal to people who try to distance themselves from those bands. the tide, sunsets and carcrashes, and all hail the heartbreaker stand out. i'd also suggest buying this CD before the most recent release (one fell swoop); i wasn't as impressed with the new songs, even after multiple listens.

5 out of 5 stars bubbling from the lips that u used to love to kiss.......2005-10-10

i bought this CD for the song "sunsets and car crashes" and it took me FOREVER to finally get it and everyone told me that it was such an awesome CD so i couldnt wait to get it and now i see what everyone was talking about

1. Aim Snap Fall 4/5: its a really slow song but the lyrics are really pretty and it sets the mood for the rest of the CD

2. Caterpillars 4/5: i love the opening guitar to this, and the music is great, and the flow is beautiful. The lyrics are great too and the vocals are pretty

3. The Tide 5/5: some of the best lyrics on the CD, def one of the best songs. I love the guitar thru out the song. The vocals are really nice but the message that in this song is amazing! one of my favourite songs ever. Def depicts the hardships of growing up, and at a time in my life where i look back on all the memories that are gone, i can def relate to the longing of this song "heavens not a place that u go when u die/its that moment in life when u actually feel alive/so live for the moment and take this adivce/live by every word

4. Your Evil Soul 4/5: i love the lyrics in this song! the vocals are not good but the lyrics save this song so much! but the way his voice goes with the song, its interesting and haunting and creepy.

5. Bracelets 3.5/5: eh, i dont like the way this starts off..it goes to quick. I like the lyrics, and im glad when it finally slows down. Eh, its medocore at best, but the lyrics are good.

6. The Night Will Go As Follows 4.5/5: love the lyrics to this, and the vocals are great!! def makes up for "bracelets". One of the better songs on this CD.

7. All Hail the HeartBreaker 5/5:LOVE the lyrics! love the guitar, love the vocals! One of the best on the CD. The message is one that anyone can easily relate to and thats why this is such a successful song! i adore it!!

8. To Much 4/5: Not bad. A little repetitive, but some of the lyrics are nice such as "i love the way the galaxy starts to melt/as we become one [X5]/how does it feel"

9. 3685 4/5: i really like the opening, and this song reminds me SO much of The Starting Line: Make Yourself At Home EP. the lyrics are very nice. I like the girls voice in this, its interesting and it just fits.

10. Black Dresses 4/5: i love the more gothy lyrics to this, a lot like "your evil soul". His voice is errie in this song and the lyrics are just awesome!

11. Under The Covers 3/5: eh, like "bracelets" i dont really care for this song, but the lyrics are nice and the gutiar is extremely nice also. I could go either on this, but there are some parts to this song that shine

12. Sunsets and Carcrashed 6/5: I ADORE the opening! the rain sound has ALWAYS been a favorite sound of mine, and the lyrics are AMAZING! the guitar and music is just awesome! this is one of my favorite songs, not only on the CD, but in general. This is a gorgeous song! Makes the CD!

Spill Canvas sounds A LOT like Starting Line and im not complaining becuase i love them also, but this CD just shines in my eyes. Some people say that there isnt any 1 song that shines on this CD and i STRONGLY disagree. "The Tide", "Your Evil Soul", "The Night Will Go As Follows", "All Hail the Heartbreaker", "Black Dresses", and "Sunsets and Car Crashes" are AMAZING songs and the rest are not easily forgettable! This is an amazing emo CD!

3 out of 5 stars Decent Enough........2006-05-10

Most of the songs are good, but very few are actually very good. They are consistently decent. The more interesting tracks for me are : Starry Eyes, I Don't Remember Your Name, Girl, Held Up High, Imitation Jewellery, and Rock and Roll Love Letter (which is a cover of a Tim Moore song).

3 out of 5 stars Good retrospective of a footnote band.......2006-02-22

This is an enjoyable disc that I bought to get two essential tracks from the era, "Rock and Roll Lovesong" and "Starry Eyes." The rest of the disc is not as strong as other bands but still an enjoyable listen.

5 out of 5 stars A lot more to this group than "starry eyes".......2005-12-25

If you love power-pop you'll want to have a few CD's by the Records in your collection. This is a good place to start because it has a mix of tracks from the first three releases.

First, "Starry Eyes" is a decent song but certainly NOT the "best" song by the Records. I'm a bit tired of reviewers clammering on about how great "Starry Eyes" is while ignoring most of the other material. In fact, if I had to choose only a few songs by the records as my all-time favorites, "Starry Eyes" would not even be included.

The first album was something of a mixed bag with a few duds. The follow up album ("crashes") was a very strong release and is what the first album SHOULD have been. The third release ("music on both sides") was another mixed bag containing a few great songs - my favorites being "Not So Much The Time", "Imitation Jewellery", and "Heather and Hell", two of which are included on this release.

These guys had a real knack for coming up with great melodies and harmonies. It's a shame that they just couldn't seem to get all of the great material together on one album at the right time. They were also never able to come up with a "hit" that sold the entire album (like "My Sharona"/"Get the knack").

Get this CD!! You'll find that there's a LOT to like about the Records. Thank god that groups like this existed to keep the Power-Pop/Rock 'n Roll torch lit!

4 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes, one hit, good music.......2005-03-22

I have The Records debut outing in the US on vinyl. I remembered Starry Eyes playing on the radio with that Byrds like jingle jangle guitar. This is a nice collection. You get a good cross section of what The Records were all about. Yes, they were blatant about their Byrds, Beatles, et al influences, but they never denied it either. A good addition to any CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars This is Power-Pop at it's best!!.......2003-05-27

For the earlier reviewers who said that these guys were never a great band and that this material is dated, well, you are just plain wrong! I have always been a major fan of Power-Pop since the mid-70's, and this is the CD that I measure all great Power-Pop by. I think the songs included here are as good, if not better, than anything my other power-pop heroes like, BADFINGER, THE RASPBERRIES, THE DB'S, JELLYFISH, FLAMING GROOVIES, THE POSIES, etc., released in their prime. The Will Birch/John Wicks songwriting tandem was WAY underrated. I could go on for several paragraphs as to how good these guys sounded, but if you have ever liked Rock and Roll with great pop harmonies and Beatlesque guitars cranked to 11, then, my friends, you NEED this CD! You WILL NOT be disappointed. The songs here are as fresh as they were in the early 80's.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Records deliver their best album. Power Pop Perfection!.......2006-03-29

After a very good but uneven debut in 1979 with "shades in bed", the Records quickly followed with the 1980 release "crashes". The lead vocals of John Wicks were strengthened immeasurably with the addition of Jude Cole, who also takes the lead on several tracks. Sweet harmonies, catchy melodies and cool guitar riffs are plentiful. This disc captures the Records at their all time peak.

This CD contains 6 bonus tracks and a very nice inner sleeve with pictures and lots of group comments. For the listening purists, I would like to note that the track order on this CD is different than when originally released on LP. The original order was;

man with a girl proof heart
hearts will be broken
girl in golden disc
i don't remember your name
hearts in her eyes
spent a week with you last night
rumour sets the woods alight
the worriers
the same mistakes
guitars in the sky

It's strange, but I actually like the new order much better. "hearts in her eyes" is an amazing track and I can certainly understand why it has been "bumped up" into the number one position on this release.

In my opinion the strongest bonus track is "faces at the window", an enjoyable and fun song with a very Kinks/Ray Davies approach to the lyrics. The last two bonus tracks are the original versions of "the same mistakes" and "man with a girl proof heart". Both tracks were recorded before Jude Cole joined the group and demonstrate that Hue Gower's vocals were actually very detrimental to the overall sound that the Records were striving for.

This album is a "must own" for collectors of power pop!

footnote:

Barry Martin (not an official member) is credited with guitar on tracks 2-5 and 7-12. I'm not sure if this is the same "Barry Martin" of "Hamsters" fame, but I do know that he played with Will Birch and John Wicks in the group "The Kursaal Flyers" prior to the Records. Playing guitar on 10 tracks is fairly substantial and I thought it was worth a mention here.

Also;

John Wicks is STILL making music (as John Wicks & The Records)! He recently (as of April 2007) released a new CD titled "ROTATE" on the KoolKatMusic label (search for it online). It's OUTSTANDING to say the least and is a definate FIVE STAR album. Quite honestly I would rank "Rotate" as the BEST CD release of 2007! Records fans REJOICE!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop Masterpiece.......2005-07-28

Indulge me for a moment. It's difficult to listen to this CD and not think of what the songs have meant to me over my life. I originally got this record when I was 13 years old, and it's been with me ever since. I was wet-my-pants happy to find it on CD (my vinyl copy is a bit battered). To me, this is a perfect, and I mean PERFECT, slice of power pop, maybe the finest power pop available anywhere. There's not a so-so song in the bunch. And the six bonus tracks are all worthwhile additions, despite the fact that they're perhaps not as polished as the original ten tracks. I love this record! Now it's your turn. Love it! Love it! Love it!

4 out of 5 stars Crashes is a Smash.......2005-07-16

"Crashes", the Records 1980 follow-up to their vinyl debut, is probably their most complete and coherent release. This current CD version has 6 extra tracks from the original vinyl album's 10. The running order is also different from the US vinyl release, which was (as I recall) 1. Man With A Girlproof Heart 2. Hearts Will Be Broken 3. Girl In Golden Disc 4. I Don't Remember Your Name 5. Hearts In Her Eyes 6. Spent A Week With You Last Night 7. Rumour Sets The Woods Alight 8. The Worriers 9. The Same Mistakes 10. Guitars In The Sky. This was a much more satisfying layout than the CD version, in my opinion. The Records were a top power pop band of the late '70's and early '80's with a unique sound. Were I building a 'Best of..." I'd use this album as the basis, then insert tracks from their other albums such as "Imitation Jewelry", "Affection Rejected", "Girls That Don't Exist", "Up All Night" and "Paint Her Face", all to be found on the CD "Smashes, Crashes, and Near Misses". If you liked Nick Lowe or Dave Edmunds, The Knack or The Beat, The Heaters or the Cowboys, then you'll love The Records too, and they were never better as a band than on "Crashes".

Not as good as this title's follow-up release 'Immortality Lessons'(see my review),but still decent enough.Thought that 'Crashes To...' was also tough to describe, but here goes... experimental post-rock.Ten cuts with a total of 72:54,so it is a long record.Best two tracks that held my full attention were the nearly ten-minute "A Voice Through A Cloud" and the disc's other lengthy tune "Sands Of Two Jima".Line-up:Glenn Jones-guitar,Michael Bloom-bass,Robin Amos-synth and John Proudman-drums.Just might appeal to fans of Jessamine,Tortoise,Flying Saucer Attack and Jim O'Rourke.

4 out of 5 stars about as close as pure post rock will come to a great CD.......2002-11-04

Simply put, Cul De Sac represents everything good about the relatively new genre of Post Rock. With their obvious musical saviness, Cul De Sac references an enormous wealth of obscure styles ranging all the way from progressive to surf to create a sound that is as much in debt to fusion pioneers "The Mahavishnu Orchestra" as to the classic "Beach Boys". "Crashes to Light..." is certainly no exception to this established image of diversity as it seamlessly melds the sonically mammoth guitar blasts of Sonic Youth with the mellow ambience of Tortoise and effectively covers everything in between. Containing no vocals to limit or formalize the ideas presented on "Crashes to Light..." the instruments are allowed to flow and melt until the ideas of individual notes and written music fades into the background in favor of a shimmering tapestry of majestic noise. Then, proceeding like an extended dream, the album creates a myriad of highs and lows that have endless depth leaving the listener completely enveloped in sound by the end of the CD. Although each song seems to almost dissolve into the next, the album's true centerpiece is the 12+ minute opus "The Sands of Iwo Jima" which is guaranteed to impress any critic of the post rock scene. However, in similar fashion to the old progressive rock bands of the 70s, some may be turned off by the obvious pretentiousness associated with this style of music, but for those who are able to digest a rather heady blend of middle-eastern vibes and krautrock soundscape explorations, this album delivers exactly that. With more power than Tortoise and less noise than Mogwai, Cul De Sac is a perfect middle ground for post rock making for an album that will not only appeal to fans of the genre, but also still remain accessible enough to be appreciated by most non-enthusiasts. Perhaps one of the greatest representations of what is going on today in the world of experimental indie, Cul De Sac is a good buy for anyone interested in hearing the direction being taken by much of today's underground music scene.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2001-08-05

I have listened to this album many times and it never becomes boring. It helped me out with a kind of cleansing after a minor surgery, and everyone i've played it for absolutely loves it. It's music you can concentrate on and find new things each time, or music you can just let drift in the background. Things i love about it are the sound, they take your basic drum bass guitar, and make it something totally different that you wouldn't have expected. Also, the writing is so consistent throughout the whole album, there isn't a single track on the album you could do without.

4 out of 5 stars A trip........1999-06-13

Great instrumental music from Cambridge, MA's unheralded heroes. There is actually one song with words, but mostly the music will drive your mind sans verbiage.

3 out of 5 stars Too monotonous of an album.......1999-06-09

I think the music is actually good, but the problem is that there is little variation from song to song. If you hear 1 song, you've heard the whole album essentially. It might be good background music, but there really is nothing memorable about the album that would make me want to put it on for my friends are drive to on a sunny day. Of course I realize this is post-rock and you aren't as likely to find catchy hooks or melodies, but 73 minutes of hearing the exact same style of music with little variation makes it not worth it to me. I'll likely be exchanging the album for something else at the store. May I suggest Stereolab's Dots and Loops. Stereolab proves that you can be post-rock and still have melodious and memorable music.

5 out of 5 stars Fond Memories!!.......2007-07-08

Loved this album as a kid and I was so happy to get on a CD. Not sure what to say about the music, either you like Dixieland or you don't. Ditto for the FH5+2. As Dixieland goes, it's free and easy. . . characterized by lots of work on the sorprano sax, which gives it a unique, less brassy, sound.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Have a Party!.......2003-07-16

This is beyond a doubt the best of Firehouse 5 + 2 I've ever heard. I grew up listening to the album and was thrilled to find the CD version. Overall, it's a pretty good likeness to the album, and it is very clean sounding. I do recall the soprano sax and piano being somewhat more prominent in the original album platform, so the mixing could have been a tad more faithful. The joy these musicians have in performing such fun music is definitely conveyed, and you, too, will be transcended into a happier place.

        5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2005-10-08

I recently picked up a demo cd of The Upwelling at a rockin' local cd store. I was expecting decent rock but what I got was a swift kick in the pants by an amazing group! I can't really describe them but at times I hear Something Corporate or Guster or at other times I hear Coldplay. It's such a wonderful new group that everybody should listen to!

A friend of a friend told me i HAD to listen to The Upwelling, so I did, fully expecting it to suck. Much to my surprise they were incredible. I could describe what they sound like (U2 mixed with coldplay mixed with Pavement) but I'm not sure that would be fair.
i'll just say check them out if you have the time.. you won't be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive Rock - Incredible Band.......2004-12-17

I was picking up U2's new one in Virgin and I found the Upwelling album next to "Veritgo". I gave them a whirl on the sound station and the sound just grabbed me. It didn't cost much and about the 7th time through this EP - I was addicted. It's melodic, explosive rock, makes me think of an alternative Peter Gabriel hanging out with Pink Floyd with a twist of U2 edge. The vocals are a little in background and it took me a few more listens to catch all the words but everything just blends together so smoothly!

This is an exciting band, I actually caught them live and they rocked the house. It will be interesting to see what their next release will be like as they had a number crowd pumping songs. It's great to catch a young band with so much talent right before they explode into the mainstream.
