Songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen launched Steely Dan with a seductive, poker-faced 1972 debut as smoothly accessible in its music as it was elusive in its thematic concerns. The opening "Do It Again" snagged swift commercial success as one of the most mysterious pop hits in history, a sultry rock cha-cha that chronicled a series of harrowing catastrophes far removed from the reheated love songs and pro forma countercultural rebellion of the day. Though the core band boasted two formidable guitarists, Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias, it was the bloom of Fagen's keyboards and his reedy, smart-ass vocals that carried Thrill light years beyond modal, blues-based rock. That said, an enduring highlight remains the furious six-string fantasia of "Reelin' in the Years," spiked by Elliot Randall's downright historic solos, at once dour and giddy in its indictment of a poser, while "Dirty Work" (featuring short-lived, nominal lead singer David Palmer) offers a decidedly adult vignette of adultery. There isn't a weak track here, astonishing, considering how much growth future Dan albums would display. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
Sure You Can: See "Brooklyn".......2007-07-09
I never need to hear "Reelin' In Years" or "Do It Again" again (great as they are they are), but the rest of this debut by The Dan has thankfully not been so overexposed. Every song is a winner (if not a thrill), particularly "Brooklyn" (a paean to a prostitute with soulful vocals by David Palmer) and "Dirty Work" (quite the opposite). Drummer Jim Hodder takes the vocals for "Midnight Cruiser" and if he's a bit wobbly in the verses, the singalong chorus makes up for it. David Palmer is elsewhere serviceable and smooth - - but the two biggies both have Mr. Fagan taking over, of course. The rotating vocals help to give a more "band-oriented" feel to the album, unlike some of the later more opaque, strictly-in-the-studio releases. Steely Dan is one of those bands who remain outside of their time; this could be a brand new album and not one released way back in '72. It's still remarkable - - the band's least oblique release in an amazing catalogue.

my favorite steely dan album........2007-03-26
despite spending the bulk of my teen years in the 70's, i did not get around to steely dan albums until the 90's. too bad so much time was lost. life is definitely a bit better with their recordings as a part of it. "can't buy a thrill" is my favorite piece of work by these incredible musicians. the wonderous studio craftsmanship that they display on all of their albums, is here matched with their strongest set of songs. "do it again," "dirty work," "midnight cruiser," "reelin' in the years," "brooklyn," and "change of the guard," are steely dan as the top of their form. the whole thing, in fact, is great. a classic i would suggest you not miss.
Meet Steely Dan .......2007-03-11
The Dan had done some minor recording work, including the soundtrack to the obscure Richard Pryor vehicle " You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It", but " Thrill" was the first album to arrive in store bins across America. Two hits were spawned; " Do It Again" and " Reelin' in the Years" fit well into the FM airwaves, a medium still looking for definition. Steely Dan would quickly prove they were no one trick pony. Not even the debut CD can be fully considered without the sum of the work.
Each song is a carefully crafted stage play with a bizarre main character. Some lyrics are more direct than others, but a reference can be gleaned from every track. As important is the musicianship, a constant among the Dan canon. While session players came and went, Becker and Fagen established a standard of playing that would never diminish. In fact, it got more and more sophisticated.
Get the first outing. Each CD has a personality of its own, but the first try is always the most poignant ( in their case, esoteric).
Can't Buy a Thrill.......2007-01-31
Folks, DJ's are sampling/mixing "Do it Again" in 2007! I hear it every night on KBIG 104.3 (Los Angeles) on their mix-downs late night (Monday thru Friday). The fact that it has been remastered is to everyone's benefit. This is rock-and-roll?? This came out in 1972?? Steely Dan just rocks! Period! Get your copy and see what we've all been missing! Mssrs. Fagen and Becker are truly "two of a kind." Five stars!

On this second album, these rockers from Austin, Texas, demonstrate a flair for perfect mid-'60s pop epitomized by the Kinks and the early Who. The opening track, "The Way," was an early break-out hit for the trio, but the entire album offers similarly uptempo serenades. It's a surprising direction for a band known for its hard-rocking live sets, but an early clue of their fondness for romantic hokum came on their remake of Bacharach & David's "This Guy's in Love with You" from 1997's Lounge-A-Palooza tribute album. Some of these songs actually come off tougher live, but that doesn't detract from the simple pleasures of this record, which is smooth, smart, and moving. --Steve Appleford

awsome. i had looked everywhere for this as they are no longer distibuted and you had a new one!!!! thank you.
The best of FASTBALL.......2006-08-29
This is the best album ever for Fastball. Wish the newer one is better but it wasn't.
Nice ear candy !!!!.......2006-03-09
In a world where most artists assume they have to produce noisy, discordant, and non-melodic fodder for the equally beguilled public these guys are a nice retreat.
Just plain good ole rock that you can play all the way thru without torturing yourself by trying to listen to it 10 times before "you get it" like some of the crud being passed off as art these days. (yes, I do hate emo and death/thrash metal)
This is the only album of theirs that I've listened to and looking forward to grabbing the rest of their work.
a really fun album.......2006-02-14
I was about 10 or 11 when this album came out and I was among the millions who loved the song "The Way". I bought the cd and, for a while, they were my favorite band. But years past and my musical tastes drifted toward the hardcore/ metal/ death metal spectrum. But, recently, I dug this old cd out and put it in, on a whim. I had forgotten what a great band Fastball was (and still is). This album is so different and so upbeat compared to what I now listen to that I am just constantly drawn to it. The songs are simple, yet really impressive. Tony and Miles have two really distinct, good voices and the music itself puts you into a good mood. I really like this album and I'm really glad to have unearthed it after all of this time.
A Warm Fuzzy Feeling, indeed.......2006-01-19
FAST BALL threw me a curve. I didn't expect this and I'm a better listener for hearing their CD. Anyone who likes power pop will find the hooks a plenty on this release. That's one of the places I like to visit from BIG STAR to the UNCLE DEVIL SHOW, I eat this stuff up. Like the title one of NICK LOWE's early records: Pure Pop for Now People.
It's almost as if PAUL MACARTNEY were in the studio saying, not bad fellows, not bad at all. It's fresh yet familiar all at once, an absolute home run.
"THE WAY" which opens the CD, is a stone c old smash. An instant classic. The most modern sound on the disc. Sort of like the best moments from a great, lost SUGAR RAY single. A song so summery good you'll be playing it at your next BBQ and have folks asking you "Who is that band? It's that good; the kind of song John Cusack's character in "Hi Fidelity" would play in his record shop in Chicago. Wonderful harmonies, evoking British Invasion images of Beatles.
"FIRE ESCAPE" received considerable airplay on WXRT-FM (Chicago's Finest Rock) at the turn of the century, and while not my personal favorite, is certainly the reason these popsters made a little splash during the Y2K era.
I feel that things really pick up with tracks 6-12, where there is a half dozen+, cheerful pop moments, so well crafted, you'll wonder where these guys came from, have been...and why they weren't discovery by more rock hounds.
"WARM FUZZY FEELING", hits one out of the park. This track could easily have come off a vintage SMITHEERNS LP.
"SLOW DRAG" Has the craftsmanship of the brothers FINN in CROWDED HOUSE or the woefully underrated REMBRANTS.
"GOOD OLD DAYS", like The KINKS, has a snappy beat, with a punched up horn section reminiscent of BS&T or later day GRASS ROOTS. Me likes the Old Days, Good Times I Remember. You know, the horny sounds of CHICAGO.
"CHARLIE THE METHODONE MAN",
"OUT OF MY HEAD". Get out your Bic lighter as CHEAP TRICK fans re-unite, Z'NUFF said.
"DAMAGED GOODS", BADFINGER anyone? Listen for the ELVIS COSTELLO-styled vocal presentation on this one.
"NOWHERE ROAD" reminds me of AL Kooper's immortal keyboard play circa Dylan's "LIKE A ROLLING STONE", meets `BALLAD OF JOHN & YOKO", before evolving into a salute to THE WHO's "I CAN SEE FOR MILES". As Keith Moon once said: "If you want to play load, hit the drums hard".
In the end FASTBALL sounds the most like FASTBALL, and that's a good thing.
FASTBALL touches them all and left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. You should try FASTBALLS pitch too.

Customer Reviews:
Magnificent!.......2007-06-02
I have listened to this album time and time again. I never tire of its beauty, its passion, and its inventiveness. It is one of the few albums I must always have on my MP3 player. It is a work of genius by a man who is brilliantly interpreting the genius of the Beatles. The recording quality is superb.
Interesting and surprising.......2006-06-11
I love this CD. It combines the best of both worlds--classical and rock. Paul McCartney said he took Bach pieces and made them into something new; for instance he used Bach chord progressions for his song "Jenny Wren," on his newest "Chaos and Creation" CD. Well, Bayless takes Beatles melodies and does great Bach-style things with them here. It is fun to hear Beatles done in the Baroque style, interestingly and flawlessly. Bayless is creative in his arrangements, AND he performs so well. This CD makes me smile. I betcha Bach and all four Beatles are smiling whenever its played.
Superb artistry!.......2005-12-31
As a professional classical musician (and erstwhile Beatles fan - my mother raised me listening to them at home in the late 70s) I have to commend this delightful album! The playing itself is fantastic, and the artistry and skill of John Bayless in imitating Bach is really amazing. It's just plain fun to listen to, but sounds like "real" classical music. I've bought this as a gift for many other musical colleagues, to rave reviews!
True to Bach, with a hint of The Beatles.......2005-08-13
This CD is a tribute to Bach with a hint of The Beatles infused between. It rings true to Bach's complex, multi-voiced piano pieces with mild Beatles undercurrents. Beautifully done. I completely disagree with the previous reviewers.
Worth a try, but don't expect much.......2005-08-08
I like listening to experimental music, and thus I have a lot of respect for this album for what it attempts to accomplish. I had high expectations for this experiment because I am a huge fan of Bach and the Beatles. It's very hard to hear any Beatles influence during most of the album. Unless the money that you plan to spend on this album is disposable, I suggest that you consider spending some time listening to the samples before investing in this album.

Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19
I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.
Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15
Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.
My dad loves it.......2007-02-13
If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea
Great Album!.......2006-04-22
I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.
I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.
My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.
Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.
Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14
I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.
"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."
The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.
Highly recommended.

If you buy this CD..........2007-07-03
A lot of pieces of this CD are passed on to the next, Unprotected, this one was much dirtier. Schimmel did a better presentation in the next, although this CD still has its jewels.
Great Album Marred By Ending.......2004-07-20
Typically hysterical stand-up gets marred by novelty songs at the end. He begins the bit(s) at the end of the album by talking about how he's being pressured to release a novelty song to promote, but ends up spending way too much time with his take on them, including a full length song at the end. The crowd eats it up, but as per irony, that's the point - but it never should have been put on the album. Absolutely worth the purchase price for the first two-thirds of the album, though.
Off The Hook!!!.......2002-01-16
This cd was just as I expected. Never a dull moment. Schimmel keeps you in stiches continually. He is very graphic, so if you are not into that style of comedy. I suggest you not buy it. I was very satisfied with this cd and do recommend it to all those who enjoy a good hard laugh. ...
Angry but at times predictable.......2001-07-13
Schimmel is funny, but not as loaded with "classic" lines that you instantly memorize - you find these in superb Denis Leary's acts.
Sometimes it feels that he could go easier on four-letter words; excessive usage lessens the effect and blunts the sharp edge. This is a shame.
The title track - cheerful, silly and hilarious - is probably the highlight. I catch myself humming it every now and then.
... I laughed until I hurt!.......2000-11-17
Robert Schimmel is one of the most twisted, yet the most NORMAL, comic voice out there! Sure, what he talks about is gross at times, but most of it is stuff that WE have done! His material is hilarious, his timing impeccable, and he has the sweetest sounding voice when he tells his hilarious stories. Many times I have been feeling depressed, and his CDs have pulled me out of it and made me feel good! I recommend it. I own all of Robert Schimmel's CDs.

falls short.......2006-08-06
Sure I love the Beatles. And while I don't have much of an ear for classical, there is a lot I like. And I'm a sucker for rock music with real string sections. But this CD just doesn't hold my interest; it sounds like elevator classical. Who'd've thunk that one could make a string arrangement of Yesterday or Yellow Submarine that would bore me?
Perhaps if I could discern the "wittily chopped up [variations comparable to those] which Mozart and Beethoven wrote on the well-known songs of their own day," I'd like it more. But my wife (who plays in a local symphony, and does have an ear for classical motifs) also finds the songs uninspiring.
The only tracks which held my interest were Help and Can't Buy Me Love.
Ah, the beuty of the cello:.......2006-06-04
Okay, I have no idea why people are judging this based purely on lablings: quite frankly, it should be about the music, and nothing else.
Now, with that said, I have to say this is one of the most beutiful arrangements for a Band I've ever heard. The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Phil have done a phenominal job at creating something amazing and new out of something amazing and old. I have to say that this is for any fan of the Beatles, classical music, and anything cello related. I'd deffinately suggest the buy, as the entire album is gorgeous.
Oh, and Cello Choirs are probobly the best string ensembles in existance (biased, yes: but that's okay, because cello deserves my bias)
Very well done.......2005-09-19
First of all, I LOVE the Beatles, and I LOVE Classical music. Personally I do not care how Amazon lists this CD.
That being said, I have played many arrangements of Beatles songs (mostly for string quartet) and they all leave something to be desired. These arrangements are bright, colorful and imaginative. Some of the songs have quite lengthy introductions that can have even the most devoted Beatles fan without liner notes in hand skipping forward to find out exactly what song they are listening to. I especially loved Norwegian Wood (I almost like it more than the real deal!). I have long been a fan of cello choirs, and for those who can't get enough cello this will be like a trip to heaven! If you like this CD, also try out the London Viola Sound
BEATLES IN CLASSICS.......2004-04-30
This is the title of a CD I have by the 12 Cellists Of The Berlin Philharmonic.Obviously the same one with a different sleeve.
Yet anyone who claims to know anything about the Beatles knows that "Lennon/McCartney" was agreed on at the beginning whoever wrote the song
You're missing the point...............2003-04-15
While I am sympathetic to the concerns of the other reviewers' issues with the song credits, with all due respoect to Beatlemanics, they can get a little carried away with Beatles trivia and forget that we're talking about MUSIC, something they neglected entirely. I found this CD to be filled with very creative arrangements, that were beautifully and flawlessly executed. This "Dandy Dozen" puts a spin on the Fab Four that takes them into a different dimension, artistically speaking, far from the dad-whistled muzak that another reviewer mistook it for. My only objection was that the recording quality was not the highest quality, and a little "noisy".

Dirt track folky blues with a twist of Golightly. Dave, with his famous hair from Hill, Texas is brilliant on this release. Dave is Holly's stand-up bass player for tours in America. Holly is the best songstress since ever. Love em, buy it now ! ! ! See them live for a different sound. That is all.

yeah boooi!!.......2007-05-12
This is great. I didnt quite know what to expect. But this is really just a fun album. Just five iron being five iron. Its really crazy. I think this one goes down #2 as the craziest fif album. Cheeses to me is the crazyest and my favorite. Hype however is like FIF with their hair down. You know whatever. "the phantom mullet," and "you probably shouldnt move here," and probably the two most rediculus songs. In fact the latter, i was cracking up its so rediculus.
But some songs here are cheese music. "ugly day," is the exact same melody as b-side, " rhubard pie." from newest album ever sessions, and appears on cheese. I think "pie" is a better version. Also, "I still like larry," is the same melody as," dont ever ask us to play this," from cheeses. From the hidden pre-track, " whats up?" comes the catchy as heck, "the greatest story ever told." I was laughing so hard when, "its not unusual," came on. Classic cover. and, "a new hope," is without a doubt one of the coolest FIF songs. Get it. Its un-like previous FIF material but its still great.
Catchy as hell and super fun!.......2006-07-25
Before listening to "All The Hype" all I'd ever heard of FIF was 'When I Go Out' and the Pants rock opera from Quantity is Job 1. I checked All The Hype out on a whim and absolutely fell in love with the band through it all.
While some may argue that the songwriting on All The Hype is a patchwork at best, if you look at Five Iron's other albums, it's easy to see that All The Hype does reflect and influence their other albums. For instance -- the odd recording style of "Giants" parallels FIF2: Electric Boogaloo's "Vultures". "The Phantom Mullet" continues Five Iron's quest for all-around 'fun' songs, following in the footsteps of "Blue Comb '78"and, of course, the Pants rock opera. "World Without End" echoes the uplifting feel of "Every New Day". And "A New Hope" sets the stage for Five Iron's crossover to more rock, less ska on their later albums.
The album is fun to listen to, albeit rocky in transition at some points -- 'You Probably Shouldn't Move Here' to 'Hurricanes' to 'Giants' to 'I Still Like Larry' sticks out as one of the more painful setups in Five Iron's history -- but get past all that and you'll find yourself with an album that's perfect to sing along to.
Also, it features the greatest cover of "It's Not Unusual" of all time.
So ditch R.E.O. Speedwagon and listen to "All The Hype" as you're cruisin' downtown in your Camaro.
Might have been good as a first attempt.......2003-08-30
Let me start out with a disclaimer: a lot of people love this album, and, musically it's sound. (no pun intended) FIFs constantly changing style missed me with this album, although "ugly day" was acceptable, it sounded much better on the live album...
If you're a FIF fan you'll like it. If you're not, try Electric Boogaloo or "Our newest album ever" first. (Electric Boogaloo was the best IMO, but i think i'm in the minority on that choice )
Worst FIF album ever.......2003-07-22
This album came during a very difficult time for Five Iron Frenzy. One of their chief song writers left the group before songs for this album were written, and the various members of the band (all 8 of them) kind of traded off on song writing duties for this album. As a result, it lacks the unity in sound that a lot of their other albums had (Electric Boogaloo has the same failing, but not to the same extent).
This is, in my opinion, the least catchy and least appealing of all FIF albums. I was a hardcore fan before this came out, I bought it on the first day and I remember sitting in the car listening to it on the way home and my girlfriend saying to me "It kind of [bad isn't] it" I hated to agree, but I had to.
For the FIF beginner go for one of their first two albums or the Quantity is Job 1 EP for their finer work. Eventually the FIF faithful talked themselves into liking this one, but without the previous FIF experience, this album will really fall flat for the uninitiated.
The only really stand out track on the album is A New Hope (and possibly Solidarity). Go buy those two songs on ITunes, and you aren't missing much of anything from the rest of the album.
Fun CD.......2003-04-22
I bought this CD after I heard about FIF from a friend and I am really glad that I did. At first I thought that many of the songs sounded similar, but after a few listens I can now appreciate them all individually. The songs on this CD are fun and are uplifting. I especially enjoy Phantom Mullet, Ugly Day and Greatest Story Ever Told. Five Iron Frenzy is a unique group that should appeal to most people. I recommend this CD to anyone looking for a different type of music that you don't normally hear.

Album Description
BUY OUR INTENTION; WE'LL BUY YOU A UNICORN is the heavily anticipated follow-up to the 2003 independent release of Did You Know People Can Fly? and marks the auspicious debut of KADDISFLY on Hopeless Records. The album is a distinct evolution of the band's art: intelligent, passionate and engaging. "Once you listen to KADDISFLY, experience their live show, and see their artwork, it is clear that the band has their own vision rooted in authentic creativity and experience," says Louis Posen, Founder and President of Hopeless Records. "We feel you will be challenged, inspired and moved by their genuine unique view of music and art. Don't let this scare you...if you like punk, indie rock, metal, jam bands, jazz and more...you will love them." The band also just finished filming the video for "New Moon Over Swift Water" which is scheduled for release in this spring. The band-directed clip features high concept haunting imagery, a vivid performance and sub-titles.

A solid release!.......2006-08-12
I was pretty hyped about this release from one of the more unique sounding bands on the Hopeless records camp. I see all these reviews commenting on the familiar style of this band. I think I can pinpoint it to sounding like a fresh punk mixture of Incubus and that old band (if anyone remembers these guys) Simon Says. Incredible sounding stuff. This album has that aura about it that it's freshness and excitement won't wear off anytime soon.
This is what art is really about.......2006-04-29
I had first heard Kaddisfly through a demo.....an aweomse demo, I might add. However, when I got to that one track on the whole CD, Kaddisfly's song (which was New Moon.... by the way) I could've sworn that I had heard the song before. I thought about it but I came to realize that I never had. The only reason it sounded so familiar was because the sound had the feel of an environment that agrees with all of your sences. It painted a mental picture of a place that was your own and the sounds were as if you yourself had created them. I was blown away. I went out right away and bought that album. I was amazed by what I heard. It was even better than what I could've imagined. The entire CD was diverse. There's a song on this album for everyone in the family. Ever since, there has not been one person I introduced to this band that hasn't agreed with me. This band not only incorperates music into their art, but in a successful attempt to appeal to every sense possible, Kaddisfly inlcudes visual art to complement the audio potrion of the album. True art appeals to as many senses as possible and Kaddisfly, as artists, try to do just that. You can almost take the music comming out of the speakers.
The most important aspect, I believe, there is to Kaddisfly, is the aspect of their messages. The lyrics contain messages that have been removed from our society and need very much to be reintroduced. There are messages of love, peace, understanding, forgiveness, and happiness saturating the songs on this album. I truly believe that these messages need to be exposed to the world and who better than Kaddisfly to do it?
Five Stars means a lot..........2006-03-06
I regard Five Stars as the biggest compliment you can give to an album. An album that encapcuates what music is all about...One that is always at the back of your mind. It reminds you how powerful music can be. This is exactly what this album does for me, but more. I preordered it, not expected anything at all. I even listened to it a few times and only liked a few tracks, dismissing it as some mediocere release by another indie band. But then you start to get it. Song by song, instrument by vocal, you start to realize, this is it! The lyrics, the art, the emotions, the songwriting, they all connect, and you have a piece of art nothing short of incredible. A review won't do this justice, but if you are willing to be patient and just listen, you'll get an album that gives you chills everytime you hear it. Each song is incredible. Heck, even a year from first listening to it, I'm finding new things I love about with each listen. I won't go into details about the actual style, and compare Kaddisfly to other bands, because they are just Kaddisfly. Anyone who doesn't like this cd just doesn't get it, or hasn't listened to it enough. And for this band, this release is just the beggining. Game Over music: Buy Our Intention, We'll Buy You A Unicorn is here!
Great Album, best in my collection!.......2006-02-06
Wow, I'm very impressed with this effort. I'd heard of Kaddisfly a couple of years ago with their singles Midnight in Shanghai, Manhattan Loves You, and Vacation on an Invisible Plane. When the new album dropped I rushed to pick it up hoping it would live up to those singles. I found out their new material was much better than before and now this CD is the most favored in my collection. Tracks like "For the Ejection of Rest, They'll Dance", and "Five Years from a Carpenter's Eye" show great songwriting skills and production. The album's two most "mainstream" singles, "New Moon Over Swift Water" and "La Primera Natural Disaster" are catchy, well-written, well-produced tracks that I listen to over and over again. "Set Sail the Prairie" and "Eres Tremulent" are also great tracks. Go ahead and pick this album up, it's great. If you like Incubus sounds, they're close, with better lyrics and production.
So flippin' good!.......2005-11-26
Seriously! This album is one of those rare treasures you just find and cherish all your life! I discovered these guys by surfing specific genres on a music website. I found a certain band whose genre's were listed as "Rock/progressional/experimental" which is in my oppinion one of the perfect combinations! Kaddisfly is an incredible band who isn't tied down by any specific genres and each and every song they've ever written is in no way a copy of anyone elses or their own songs. It still amazes me everytime I listen to this CD how so diverse and different each song is from eachother. Even some songs change so much within themselves it's astounding. Being a giant fan of Progressive Rock, you can imagine how joyous I was and am whenever I listen to this CD. It also amazes me how exceptionally great each song is, since they're all so different. Each and every band member is brilliantly talented and passionate and it shows. This CD is seriously something to be treasured forever and I plan to do just that, hopfully I convinced you to do so as well. By the way, many people compare these guys to Dredg and well... Kaddifly is so much better than Dredg. Dredg is good and all, don't get me wrong, but Kaddisfly kicks Dredg out of the water! No joke! It's very comforting to see that this world still has a place for TRUE progressive rock. I highly recommend this album.
Peace,
Ty

One of Weill's best American scores!.......2005-10-16
`Lost in the Stars' and `Johnny Johnson' are two Broadway shows scored by Kurt Weill in collaboration with Maxwell Anderson and Paul Green respectively for the librettos, both in English. Both are distinguished works and both were, I believe, fairly popular when they were first performed. What these two works have in common is that they are both works aimed at our social conscience.
`Johnny Johnson' is a mildly anti-war play dealing with America's entering the First World War, written in the mid 1930s, when Germany was already uncomfortable for Jews, but not yet on the brink of precipitating World War II. What is most interesting to me about the libretto is the reluctance of the principle character, Johnny, to enlist in the army, while his fiancée (contrary to many famous antiwar works of the past), is all in favor of his enlisting and threatens to break their engagement if he does not enlist. As a work of art, I believe the work is more interesting as a milepost in American antiwar sentiments than as an important artistic work for either the composer or the lyricist. To my ear, there is not a single song from this work that finds its way into the repertoire of balladeers. This is from a composer who has given us `September Song', `Speak Low', `Lost in the Stars', `Saga of Jenny', and `Lonely House', not to mention all the great songs from his German works such as `Mack the Knife' and `Pirate Jenny'. On top of this, there is my feeling that much of the instrumental music sounds very similar to earlier German works, especially `Mahagonny'.
`Lost in the Stars' is based on Alan Paton's novel, `Cry, the Beloved Country' and was written after World War II, in 1948-1949, and has much of the musical interest of what is missing from `Johnny Johnson'. Throughout the play, the instrumental music is much less similar to earlier Weill works and all songs seem stronger. At least two of these songs, `Lost in the Stars', `Trouble Man' and `Stay Well' are often performed by Lotte Lenya and other vocalists. While it may be pushing it a bit, this work seems almost as strong as Gershwin's `Porgy and Bess'.
I bought both because I am a big fan of Kurt Weill's music, and I would recommend both recordings to any and all Weill enthusiasts, especially as both have extensive notes and complete librettos. But, to the person mostly interested in Broadway in general, I would recommend only `Lost in the Stars'.
I will say that the performances of both vocalists and orchestra are excellent on both; however the vocalists on `Lost in the Stars' seem to give just a little extra, possibly because their material is just a bit more substantial.
I love it!!.......2002-07-12
It is so easy to get some of these songs in your head...I love this soundtrack..
Can we get someone to put this label back in stock?.......1999-12-28
With great hope in the powerful amazon.com's Jeff Bezos, the person of the year by Time magazine, we wish you can urge someone to put this title back into circulation! I have sung the piece "Lost in the Stars" and was drawn by the wonderful music and intriguing lyrics. Is there a way to locate the music score of the soundtrack?
Powerful performance,historically significant.......1999-06-04
After 50 years the little snippet heard on this site brings back the original emotions.I would love to purchase this recording in any format. The original performance, a life-changing event for me as a young girl, is recaptured.
"THE MOST MOVING MUSIC AND SACRIFICE OF A NATION.......1999-06-01
I saw the oringinal Musical "Lost in the Stars", and have the 33 album. Would love to have a CD to play on my "modern" equipment. When Todd Duncan was asked to do the part of the "Efunsdi", he read the part and broke an existing contract to go into rehearsal. He said "I have to do this for my people." I was enthralled at the libretto and zest of the choreography. So when I hear the music I am taken right back to the Opera stage and see and hear the glorious presentation. Please put it back into circulation, or if someone out there has a copy (cd) I would love to talk to you about it. CT
