Ho-Hum.......2005-09-10
I bought this based on reviews of "Bass Queen in the Mix." To me it sounds like the West Coast edition of Northern Exposure without the 4/4 house beat. In other words, its very electronic sounding, almost completely non-vocal and not very funky at all. I listened to "Eargasm" by Plump DJ's and Icey's "Funky Breaks" after this and it's definitely missing variety, skill in mixing and that "neck snapping" funky quality that make the Plumps and Icey so indispensible. Not too bad but not that interesting either. I prefer her "Mixtress" and still have not heard "Bass Queen..." BTW, my speakers are flat down to below 30 hz and I didn't find the recording quality or the bass that impressive. Listen to Crystal Method's "PHD" or "Block Rockin' Beats" by Chemical Brothers after this to see what I mean.
Darkest bass in the whole damn place.......2005-05-11
This cd should be a bass cd instead of a breaks one. This is some really dark kinda bass/breaks,different than what Im used to hearing. This is really not one of my favorite albums,it's way too bassey to be considered really good, and missing some of BA's original style. The only good thing about this album is that it's got the bass and I mean da bass to make your woofers move air like they have never moved before.Get this cd if your more into bass than breaks. If you wanna get into baby anne,I recommend you start with either of her "Bass Queen in the Mix" cd's.
Alright.......2003-11-17
This is album is ok,I love the title, but it is missing some of the bass queens original funk ,dontcha think?...It's very loud and bassy, and I cant say I enjoy every single song on this album.
Jeff.......2002-10-20
I picked up this CD 4 months ago on an impulse buy. Its decent and I would say its her best work to date. I am a huge breaks fan, but Florida Breaks are my least favorite. She definitely keeps the bass heavy and chooses some good tracks. But overall this disc, as well as a lot of Florida Breaks, is missing one key element..."funk".
Its not a bad CD to have in your collection if you really want to push the bass on your stereo. But I would reccommend that you pick up some Canadian Breaks DJs or UK Breaks. I think the best breaks DJs in the world are coming out of Canada.
If you want to hear some good, funky, dirty breaks pick up Slammin the Breaks 2 by Krafty Kuts (UK) or anything from Czech (Vancouver) before you get this.
DJ BABY ANNE.......2002-08-26
DJ Baby Anne is by far, the best DJ I have ever heard. If you like DJ Baby Anne, listen to Infected Mushroom. They have an awesome album too. My favorite on that album is, "Mushi Mush". Baby Anne, don't stop the beat girl!!

You heard it here first. BOB and the band are destined for world domination, it is only a matter of time. have heard the band live and they never cease to amaize. they can sustain your attention for hours on end and just make you jive to the groove. buy the freebird album as well...even better if you can imagine that.
poppin! Austin band lights a fire under your pants.......2000-08-17
I have seen this band out when I am visiting in Austin, along with all of their other bands, the Scabs, and Lonelyland where they play at the local Saxon Club every monday night. These guys are tight, and the vocal ability that Bob Schneider brings to all his work with his talented posse is amazing. You have to have an open mind and an ability to see all the fun facets of all their integration of styles. Look past the dirty words. Who cares? You hear more language stuck on the freeway in heavy traffic anyway. Check out Lonelyland as well.
Clean It Up.......2000-06-25
While the musical talent of this band is evident, from the first note, the lyric writing has something to strive for. While not every line has a 4 letter word in it, the Ugly Americans (aka Scabs) make up for it by degrading women, talking about rape (how it is okay) and the like. If you have a mixer that can eliminate the voice track, buy this album, otherwise it would be wise to avoid it.
Best Live Show Ever!.......1999-09-28
Unlike the most watered down bands, the Ugly Americans stand alone. Not only are these guys very talented musicians, they are also very talented artists. Bob Schneiders' vocals are what Rock'n'Roll is suppose to be: fun, exciting, in your face and sometimes down right offensive. I've seen these guys live atleast 20 times and it is never boring. No looking at your watch to see what time it is. They also have some CD's under the group name of "The Scabs." However, Amazon.com has CD's from some other band called "The Scabs." Go to uglyamericans.com, and there is a link to buy the real s**t! If you ever get a chance to see them live, don't miss the best show you'll ever see. It would be worth taking a trip to Austin where they play every Tuesday @ midnight at Antone's.

The three Roche sisters, Maggie, Suzzy, and Terre, have made one of the most enduring kids' records in a long time that speaks as easily to kids as it does to parents. Will You Be My Friend? is packed with melodic and inventive ditties that touch on meaningful subjects ranging from doing the laundry and facing disappointment to befriending the friendless (told as a story about a toad and turtles). The downright playful tune "Uncle Dave" sounds like an early American folk song plunked out by a fledgling kids' band (when was the last time you heard a couplet that rhymed "Brooklyn" with "good lookin'"!?!). The real prize here, among the many gems, is "Greetings," an imaginative look at our solar system told from the viewpoint of someone living on Mercury (which makes us the "aliens"). There hasn't been a space song this cosmically compelling since the Monty Python troupe sang "The Galaxy/Lighten Up." --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic album for the whole family.......2002-09-04
Six months ago, I was driving my family to the airport in my sister-in-law's minivan, and my nine-month-old baby girl was getting extremely fussy. My sister-in-law popped in Will You Be My Friend, citing it as her family's favorite, and the tape she used to make it through four children's worth of family car trips.
The tape was at the beginning of My New Bycicle, and when it kicked in, it took all of ten seconds for my daughter to stop crying. She became peacefully transfixed by the music; you could see her listening closely to it, it was very cute.
My wife and I bought the tape for our own car, and it has never failed us. If our daughter gets car cranky, we just pop this album in, and everyone is happy. The soothing harmonies help my daughter relax and endure being strapped into a carseat, while the strength of the songwriting appeals to my wife an I as music lovers.
I wouldn't give five stars to a childrens' ablum that only my child liked--those are the ones that torture parents. We've given this album to many friends with babies and toddlers, and all have reported similar success and satisfaction.
This adult-friendly childrens' ablum belongs in every family's music collection.
Wonderful Songs Parents Can Enjoy!.......2002-02-08
Great music! My toddlers love the songs now and since they keep my interest, I think they will be a favorite well beyond most of our kids music collection. Try also "Sky Blue Catfish" by the affiliated group 'Music Workshop for Kids'.
A kids CD for kids of any age.......2002-01-24
Bought this CD when our daughter was just a few months old--now she's past 4 years and loves listening to these ladies. Nice variety of fast and slow tunes (Mom's personal favorite is "The Laundry"), all with friendly lyrics and interesting themes.
If Mozart Makes 'Em Smart, So Will The Roches..........2001-05-01
As a professional musician and music teacher I am convinced that the harmonies of the Roches can expand a child's ability to make music. While all of the Roches' work is GOOD for the ear, this one has children's themes that make them extra appealing. My 5 1/2 year-old has grown up with this CD and my 5 month old loves it already. HEARING THESE HARMONIES IS GOOD FOR YOUR CHILDREN. The gentle female voices also are appealing to little ones who are used to hearing momma's voice. I will continue listening to this one long after my boys are grown.
Catchy songs & gorgeous harmonies.......2000-08-16
Our kids (3 & 6) as well as their parents (!) never get tired of this CD. Listen closely for all of the little phrases/comments you hear in the background of some of the songs - they are a riot! This is absolutely our favorite kids CD - there isn't even a close second.

Peter Himmelman is better known for his introspective songwriting than for his sense of humor, but on My Best Friend Is a Salamander he makes deft use of both. A children's album that never talks down to its intended audience, it takes its cues from Carole King's classic Really Rosie and Randy Newman's Toy Story and Babe: Pig in the City endeavors. Working with a veteran band gives the songs a timeless feel and the messages imparted are much the same: "You shouldn't judge a friend by how he looks or what he eats," Himmelman sings in the title song (even if he eats a grasshopper foot and a roasted fly); "A rock is a mountain to a bee... but you'll always be you to me," he reassures. There's also a story about alien visitors ("Little Space Guy"), the world's smallest vocal horse ("Bucky the Talkin' Miniature Horse," only two feet tall), and the travels of "An Ant Named Jane" (who "found herself on a Miami-bound air-o-plane"). It's a delightful album for parents and children, and one that neither will tire of anytime soon. --Randy Silver

My Best Friend Is a Salamander.......2005-09-09
This is my 5 and 7 year old daughters favorite cd. They absolutely love it. It is also a great cd for the adults also. It definitely has children themed songs, but the music and musicians on the cd are very talented and the music is an adult style of music with great back-up singers and varied musical styles on each song. It's the best children's cd I've ever heard! Enjoy!
You need a Salamander in your CD collection!.......2003-03-30
This CD is lighthearted, intelligent fun for the entire family. A great listen for all ages, there's something for everyone here. My daughter (4-1/2) has consistently requested it over the past 3+ years. (Pete, hate to break it to you but you come in right after Raffi and Hap Palmer in her top 5!) There's even more here for older kids, who'll appreciate the silly and imaginative tales of such characters as Larry, Bucky the Talking Horse, and the Little Space Guy. The many voices of Peter Himmelman will dazzle and delight young and old--he is a true genius and I can only hope this won't be his only album for kids. This is worlds away from the usual--you and the kids should be able to enjoy this one for many years to come. This relatively undiscovered treasure also makes a great gift. Enjoy!
My Best Friend Is a Salamander.......2001-10-17
This is a wonderful CD for kids that parents will enjoy too. The music is high quality; creative, touching, lots of fun. You won't regret adding it to your collection.
Parent and Kid Appeal.......2001-10-10
My wife and I finally started listening to this CD during nap time and after the kid went to bed for the night. I have a feeling we'll crank "MBF is a Salamander" up every now and then after the kid's gone to college. The lyrics are hilarious, touching and articulate about important values without being "roll your eyes" heavy handed.
4th Graders love to sing out loud in class to it!.......1999-10-05
I am a big fan of all of Peter's music for over 10 years now. Since I am a 4th grade teacher and mother of a 3 year old, I had to get Peter's children's CD. I bought it for my kids, but play it for myself. The tunes are original and funny! It amazes me that my 4th graders can pick up the lyrics after one play of the song. (My best friend is a salamander is their favorite.) There are values in the lyrics that I hope my students take with them after listening to the song. "You shouldn't judge a friend by how he looks or by what he eats" is a great way to teach respect in my class. I look forward to more children's CD in the future.

Taking for their album title a tough, old Mafia expression, this Minneapolis-based ensemble delivers 16 songs with soothing harmonies, gentle instrumentation, and a winning lyrical style. There's no thuggery here, just lots of persuasive singing and playing you won't be able to refuse. Just one listen to the opening lines of "Right Here and Right Now" will tug at the heartstrings as Mary Jane Alm sings softly, "Oh my sweet little boy / Don't grow up so fast / Just give me a little time to make the moment last." If that doesn't hook you, try the imaginative title track, "Sleeping with the Fishes," Michael Johnson's knowing song about little-people insomnia, "I Can't Sleep," or the three traditional tunes, including "Brahms' Lullaby" and "Hush Little Baby." In all, this overlooked 1997 disc is guaranteed to put all babies to sleep (although putting your kid in one of those automatic swings will also help). --Martin Keller

My little girl loves this cd as do I
Your baby WILL be sleeping with or without fishes!.......2002-10-10
I picked this up in a bargain bin at a music store and it's the best! The songs are sweet and sentimental (for we moms) and sure do the trick to get my boy Carlo to sleep. As a matter of fact, it works so well that I've never heard the end of it!
Enjoyed by all ages!.......2002-07-18
The first time I heard the first song (Right Here, Right Now) was when I was giving the night time bottle to my grandson and rocking him to sleep in his bedroom. I was amazed at the words of the song. It made me reminised of the years when my three adult children were growing up. I asked my husband to listen to it and he said, "Nah, I can't understand the words. The only singer I can understand is Frank Sinatra!!". BUT, when I finally got him to listen to it, a few days afterwards, he was playing the song over and over, writing down the words to the song "Right Here, Right Now". By the way, we have two cute grandchildren! I bought two CDs of Sleeping with the Fishes, one for a baby gift and one for us, the grandparents!
Falling Asleep is Easy with this CD.......2002-06-09
Best lullaby CD I have ever heard! Great for those midnight nursings.
