5 out of 5 stars it's a good one.......2006-01-16

this band is one of my favorites ones, and this Ep it's a good reason to know the music of this guys

2 out of 5 stars Not very exciting..........2005-04-25

I was disappointed with this CD. Doesn't seem to be any reason to have put it out. Most of the songs are on the first album and those versions are better. Not worth it...

3 out of 5 stars For Interpol fanatics only.......2004-05-13

I think some people's comments (like pitchforkmedia's) about the holdoverness of this title are a little over the top, as this is supposed to only be a french title, and is just here by import status. The main point of this title is the same as say the Cure's BBC ep released way back in the early 80's when they were still in their Boys Don't Cry stage, this is meant as a document of their Black Sessions session, the things tacked on it are there basically to make it a french single for Say Hello to the Angels with the Black Sessions on it. So in that light is it worth buying? Not unless you really loved Turn on the Bright Lights and can't wait for the next cd, or if you really want to hear the Black Sessions, then you'd be like me. I basically bought this because it was french, you may laugh at me, but I had just gotten back from france, and thought it'd be cool to have a french Interpol cd. However the Black Sessions were worth the 10 dollars I spent on this (believe me dont buy this from Amazon if you really want it), and hearing the song Specialist was cool as I haven't heard it before. I unlike most people don't feel like Interpol has been overhyped (now the strokes and yeah yeah yeah's are and with less good music than interpol) as they have the music to back up the write-ups. And thus I think this cd isn't just a holdover, it's mainly a document of the Black Sessions. As such you should only spend the pmney if you feel like that's enough to warrent the price. (and yes the sound is very quiet)

4 out of 5 stars You have to turn it up to 11 to hear, but still great!.......2003-10-27

Yeah, the volume on this little ditty is a bit quite and when i listen to it i have to crank the volume, but with the volume cranked, it sounds decent, so i really can't complain.
anywho, even though that all the songs have been released elsewhere, this is still a worthy recording. I am especially fond of "Specialist", it is quite stunning. I am also quite fond of this version. I would not purchase this unless you are a reasonalby die hard fan, it costs quite a bit because it is an import, and most non-interpol devotees would be disapointed by the sound quality. But for the true interpolee, this is a fantastic addition to your collection and i strongly recommend settling the black ep on your shelf next to turn on the bright lights.

2 out of 5 stars Haphazard holdover.......2003-10-23

For over a year now, "Turn the..." has been my favorite cd & I have been eager for new material from Interpol. This release combines the NYC (demo) track (the only unique track on the UK NYC single), an album track (Say Hello to the Angels), and the tracks played on French Radio "Black Sessions". The poor quality of this recording & production is probably the reason behind why "Black Sessions" CD's don't rank up there with radio sessions from the UK (Peel, Radio 1) & US (KCRW). All tracks (except for the album track) have loud popping/crackling & sound as if they were recorded from vinyl. Overall, the tracks sound no better than the ones people taped (from the radio show) & uploaded to the internet shortly after its broadcast. Secondly, the indexing fades & cuts the live tracks individually (one time rather abruptly w/ a "pop" at the end), making it sound rather haphazard. Either including the entire live recording & then indexing the tracks, or using a tape of the radio w/ intros/segueways might have given this more of an EP/ consistent feel. Including the remix of Obstacle 1, the Peel sessions, Kcrw sessions or something else might have made this a more worthwhile stopgap til the next album. Otherwise, the tracks themselves are not played any differently then the album versions. Be forewarned, this CD is Copyright Controlled.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-02-17

The Ceremony of Opposites part of the album is very good. Where it shines though is on Rebellion. Oh, I love Rebellion. I think the best songs Samael ever made are Static Journey and Rebellion. Ceremony of Opposites is the first merging of keyboards to death metal by Samael. Rebellion continues that trend. I very highly recommend this album for any fans of death metal.

5 out of 5 stars Misanthropic black metal.......2006-11-04

If you know black metal, you know that it is not just a 'sound' but more like a concept. Samael's Ceremony of Opposites does not fit the traditional 2nd wave sound, even though they reached their peak during this time. Instead Samael has taken black metal to a whole new level, somehow making the music clear and frightfully aggressive while retaining critical elements of melody and musicianship.

The album's best song is definitely 'Black Trip' and lets you know what Samael is all about. The first half-second swells into a blistering attack of intense double kick and a crushing guitar riff, which eventually moves into a highly fluid and syncopated verse riff. After a short three minutes of pure aggression, the song ends with the ominous 'I await the coming of my death'. This is easily one of my favorite songs, and could be perhaps the most intense album opener in extreme metal. The only album-openers that compare are 'In Shadows And Dust' and 'The Ambassador Of Pain', both by Kataklysm.

I hope I have convinced you of the magnitude of this album. Unlike other black metal albums that one would be inclined to listen to privately and contemplatively, you will want to crank up this album and release all your energy to it.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING MASTERPIECE .......2005-09-17

This is one every Black/Death/Doom/ fan must hear to know just what an amazing job has been done on this cd. Here are 10 tracks of extraordinary, dark and meaningful yet not for one second sounding pretentious. It is almost excruciating to listen to Vorph's cries of anger. This is not a band that is trying to just sound good, these guys puth forth a believable hate for christianity, and not by writing music that concentrates on demons, but rather being realistic in every way possible. When I get goosebumps while listening to music, I know I've stumbled unto something amazing. Just buy this cd, you won't regret it for a second, actually you'll be glad you did. And this release also has the mandatory follow up EP Rebellion. What a package.
The thing I really like about Vorph's vocal use is it has appeal and real emotions behind it, not like Deicide(I used to really enjoy listening to Deicide when I was younger, but it does nothing for me now, especially since I refuse to waste my time with such repetitive emotionless crap lacking everything a hard album should offer, except speed, but making the songs fast is not all there is to making an album hard).

There are no real stand out tracks here, which is good because it retains its wholeness to stand much higher than many other albums, even by Samael. I woke up this morning with the lyrics of Son Of Earth, that is how powerful this album and band are. In my review of the Samael album 'Eternal', I said "Ceremony Of Opposites was always my favourite but this album(Eternal) has grown on me much more". I'm not really sure I can stand by those words, as there will never be another album as soul piercing as Ceremony Of Opposites. This may not have the epic sound like Eternal does, but it has something that eternal lacks entirely, and that it a pure hard, rough like a thousand sandstones under your bare feet. The way Vorph spews forth the lyrics on this album, and the words he has chosen are so bold and effective. The last track on Ceremony Of Opposites(which is the title track)makes my skin crawl. But don't listen to that song before hearing the others, as it only has that effect after listening to the entire album. This album must be listened to in its entirety to be fully appreciated. Adding Rebellion onto the same disc is rather a catch 22 in my opinion. Being a really nice addition to Ceremony Of Opposites on hand, but after listening to the Ceremony Of Opposites album in its entirety I like a little bit of silence to get my breath back. It really is a breath taking experience.

Excellent artwork for an album well deserving of it. The cover is so matching to the music, its almost part of it. I couldn't imagine any other artwork being used on Ceremony. This is art at its finest, both musically and graphically.

"We're a part of everything as everything is a part of us" is the cryptic response issued by Vorph, Samael's guitarist and vocalist, when questioned about whether or not he associates Samael with the notorious trappings of black metal.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns of blasphemy and attrition.......2005-04-10

Nothing in any musical genre captures the spirit of pure, envenomed agression like Samael's earlier releases. Burzum and Beherit are the only bands that even come close. Needless to say, this release isn't for the casual melodic black CoF, Dimmu fan. Yet those who aren't afraid of a bit of noise and blasphemy will find Ceremony Of Opposites to be a masterpiece of the highest degree.

5 out of 5 stars F*@king g00d.......2003-10-25

nothing like the usual black metal out there. if you're a dark throne fan, then don't bother. This is not "pure" black metal (as some people put it), but none the less its different, and deffinetly worth a listen to. very catchy riffs, kinda have a digital thing about them, but not too electronic...just very precice i spose.
If 'anthems to the welkin at dusk' - emperor, appealed to you then its for you, also if your into dimmu borgir, this is just what you want.
Also...listen to opeth people!!!!!!! for those of you who haven't yet listened to them...please do! your missing out...STILL LIFE!!!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars He has done better........2003-02-02

This is another cd in my great Tiesto collection. After listening to a lot more of his stuff, including some of the "Magik" series, ISOS 1,2,3, Summerbreeze...etc, this cd really does not live up to my expectations. This is a different type of music that I had not heard before comming from Tiesto. The cd is more like drums & bass, with few, very few melodic songs and catchy rhytmns on it.
It's pretty much the same thing the whole way through..not much variation.
It is, indeed, quite another good Tiesto hit. Not as good as before, but worth a try.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2000-10-12

The first in the Space Age Series, and in my opinion, the best. Mix-master DJ Tiësto turns up the beats with this great hit. One great feature, as with many DJ Tiësto compilations, is that the fact that he makes some of his own music, so when you listen to it, you can legitimately ponder on what a great DJ, Tiësto is. Songs like Groovelounge and Gimme Some Sugar really pack some bass. But my personal favourites are Flying Squirrel Problem and Perception 4. Perception 4 is not only a great song to dance to, but a melodic masterpiece as well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the cd doesn't really start till track 7, if you listen to it, I think you will agree with me.

4 out of 5 stars Oh My Lord.............2000-06-16

DJ TIESTO... wow... No one can compare to the emotion that his music brings out in any listener. With Yet another wonderfully stunning CD, he captures the power of what trance truly is. I gave it 4 stars, only because of the perfection of Search for Sunrise.Do not let this CD slip through your fingers!

I've Been a Soundgarden fan for many years. It's very difficult to pick a favorite song, but "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" is one of the strongest B-Sides I have ever heard. It's as good or better than "Bleed Together" from the 'A-Sides' greatest hits compilation. It could have easily been included on 'Superunknown'.

If you like Soundgarden or Audioslave and haven't heard this song, this CD is worth the money.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Earth and Sky--Lunar Drive's Black Mesa Arizona.......2007-05-15

This is techno or dance music with heart and substance. It vividly blends Native American spoken pieces and music with sampling. The spoken pieces are set in a highlighting frame with the beats and music; they are thus honored and made more pointed. Surprisingly, since the music and musicians come from different parts of the world, the recording does evoke the haunted other world reality that is much of Arizona.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't there more music like this?.......2004-07-03

This is a great CD. The music is fun and easy to listen to. It is vibrant and exciting. It has very little of the harshness that plagues a lot of electronic/synth music, yet it keeps the charged unearthliness that makes electronica worth listening to. The few lyrics have a strong sense of authenticity, realness, without becoming a downer. This is music which connects me to the past and the future while keeping my feet firmly on the ground. The world needs more music like this.

5 out of 5 stars Undescribable.......2001-04-16

Just the title track and "Mo'Bridge, South Dakota" are worth the price of admission . . . Lunar Drive's music is very difficult to describe, much less pigeonhole into a given category. I suppose many would call it techno, but this is a too limited a definition and to be honest, rather insulting. Lunar Drive's musicians make use of the best of modern technology and blend it with traditional, Native American sounds. The result is some really unique, soulful, evocative and ultimately undescribable music - but definitely worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Native American themes go techno.......1998-12-17

Lunar Drive is a very unusual set of songs, not quite like anything else in my collection but a definite favorite.

The album combines traditional Native American themes, chants and short narrations with very contemporary techno embellishments and strong rythms.

This is a tough album to classify. It is more rythmic and interesting than a lot of the atmospheric/environmental sort of New Age stuff, but it isn't the kind of stuff you are going to singing around the house, either.

5 out of 5 stars 5 tracks, 5 stars.......2004-11-25

I just picked this baby up today for the wonderful price of 5.95. i thought it was a full-length, so i was ecstatic at my frugal find. when i realized it was a 5-song EP i was struck with a different sense of delight.
For Pixies Fans, take note because track 5 is a live version of gouge away that will surely BLOW you away. (You may already know this, but at the time that i am writing this review, there is no track listing here.) It is performed by the catholics, (not the pixies,) but you still get Frank Black's gritting vocals and guitar with the catholics' take on the song. Each word is pronounced in a drilling fashion, setting the words in stone in the listener's mind; an attempt to bridle the ferocity of Black's classic throaty wailing and screaming and swooping singing.
2 through 5 are all live songs, and you can feel the energy of the performance radiate through the music. It is an excellent array of Black's work, and if you come across it, is a wonderful addition to any CD collection.

1. Nadine (From the album, Show me your Tears)
2. Hermaphroditos (live, from the album, Dog in the Sand)
3. Los Angeles (Live, from the album, Frank Black)
4. Jane the Queen of Love (Live, from the album Black letter Days)
5. Gouge Away (Live, from DOOLITTLE, pixies)

It's hard for me to describe the music without getting into too much detail, so just listen to the pixies, or any Frank Black solo projects to get an idea. The sound is very thick, the song paces trudge along with guitars spitting in and out, adding to the speed and infectiousness of the songs. TADA! hope i helped!
