    Product Description

There's something almost primal about Johnny Burnette and the Rock'n'Roll Trio, and it's not just the fact that these recordings were done more or less at the dawn of rock. It could be that two-thirds of the trio (Dorsey and Johnny Burnette) were feuding brothers; rock history is replete with those, from Don and Phil Everly to Ray and Dave Davies to Phil and Dave Alvin to Liam and Noel Gallagher. Somehow, brawling musical sibs seem to bring out the best in each other. But it's more than just that. The Burnettes' Coral sessions provide a unique insight into the building blocks of rock, before the days of overdubs, multi-tracking and synthesized anything. When the trio's guitarist Paul Burlison wanted to recreate a particular "buzzy" sound, he reached into his amp, grabbed a fistful of tubes and wires and yanked. It worked. This music isn't cerebral. It's as if they opened up an artery and let the music throb out. If you ever loved Aerosmith's version of "The Train Kept A'Rolling" (or the Yardbirds', or Zeppelin's), you're in for a treat; in fact, it's the same treat that caused those bands to record that tune. The energy and vitality of these sides, nearly half a century after they were first recorded, just can't be denied.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING !!.......2003-10-22

For those of you already familiar with Albert Lee's playing you will notice that it just gets better and better. Take some well known songs, add a red hot band, top it off with some of the best guitar picking on this planet and you have Tear It Up. Some of Albert's licks are simply amazing, but many more are very subtle-the harder you listen the more you will discover. For those of you who are just discovering Albert Lee it won't take long to figure out why everyone else holds him in such high regard. No wonder Eric Clapton wanted him in his band.

5 out of 5 stars An AntiWar Masterpiece.......2002-08-26

Tippett and Britten were composers who, though very different in temperment and style, had many interests in common. One of the overiding concerns with both composers was the moral response to war and it's horrors. For Britten, the War Requiem and Owen Wingrave are his very clear moral response to war. Tippet, in his fashion is much more psychological in this work, which must rank as one of Tippett's best and most powerful operatic statements.

King Priam is a dramatic tour de force. Based on the Illiad as seen through the eyes of the Trojans, the work is a meditation on the inevitability of fate in mass movements like war. Priam, though illdisposed to the war, is unable to stop or control it as it takes both of his sons, his kingdom and then finally his own life. He emerges as a figure of moral power and grandeur, but ultimately as impotent and tragic. This libretto is one of Tippett's best and most clear statements.

Musically, Priam is a powerhouse, inaugurating Tippett's second major style. Priam is constructed in a mosaic style. Small chamber groups of instruments with defined musical content are assigned to characters. As the work develops, these small groups combine and recombine in a shifting maze of patterns that seems to endlessly reinvent itself. The music starts out as largely tonal, but the tonality breaks down as Fate takes over and dooms the Trojans. The work is never serial, but it takes an almost Bergian view of tonality, sometimes more and sometimes less tonal as the dramatic situation warrants. The vocal lines are mostly declaimed, but with moments of lyricism that are unfogettable, such as Priam's first aria, A Father and a King, or the beautiful scene between Priam and Achilles in the third act. And Achilles war cry at the end of act two is bone chilling!

This is a great performance of this piece. Many of the singers originated the roles and sing them with power and authority. Phillip Langridge is terrific as Paris. Robert Tear is a marvelous Achilles. David Aetherton conducts this difficult score with precision and a fine ear for balances.

This is a profound opera by a major 20th century composer. If you like Britten, you should own this as well. It is increasingly looking like Tippett's masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Visceral power & beauty coupled with stunning performances!!.......2001-06-13

I bought this on a whim, having heard only the slightest bit of Tippett's orchestral music and none of his operas. I expected the music to be "difficult," and the performances stilted, but I was oh so wrong! Yes, this is definitely late 20th century music -- often dissonant and atonal, but it is utterly beautiful, emotionally moving music. I'm a huge fan of Britten's operas, and judge all modern opera composers by his standards, and (pardon my gushing) Sir Michael is more than up to the challenge. First of all, he takes on the daunting task of adapting the Iliad into a opera libretto and manages to compress the drama beautifully into 3 acts that tell the story imaginatively, comprehensively and in a wholly theatrical manner. Second, he uses the music to heighten the sense of character by giving each persona a unique style of vocal line and orchestration (yes, this is what all composers do, or try to do, but Tippett succeeds in a way few others do). Several of the characters are accompanied by solo instruments (bravura parts of concerto-like difficulty performed brilliantly) -- Achilles by solo guitar, Helen by solo cello, King Priam by violin, etc. Three characters form a sort of Greek chorus who comment on the action and bring a sense of questioning morality to the whole.

All of the solo singers are astutely cast and sing with amazing power. Standouts (difficult to single out any of them, they're all so brilliant): Phillip Langridge is first-rate as Paris, Priam's second son -- he sings with enormous power and pathos at the same time. Felicity Palmer is velvety sex personified as Helen. Norman Bailey as Priam has a raw edginess to his sound, which lends such a sense of reality to a man pushed to the edge by fate and his warring sons. The London Philharmonia gives a virtuoso performance, led sensitively and intelligently by David Atherton. The digital sound is crystal clear and beautifully engineered: the sound couldn't be better live at the Met! Take a chance on this one, and enter into an operatic world you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most easily grasped of modern operas.......1999-02-27

Contemporary opera was never the same after King Priam, a suitable irony given that the Opera is perhaps the most easily grasped by the listening public of the 5 Tippett Operas. Even so, the "crisis of King Prian" stylistically and emotionally is the germ-seed for the eccentrism yet to come in "The Knot Garden", "The Ice Break", and "New Year". Tippett's theme is the futility of choice and the nature of the impact of choice on humanity in the micro-sphere of the individual and the macro-sphere of the community and history. Tippett's unusual yet perfectly conceived recasting of the Iliad from the Trojan persepctive does more than summarize plot, but pauses to comment on the universal human potential implicit therein. A must-buy for Tippett fans and for anyone who likes opera, Greek Mythology, classical music, or a good story.

The Black Uhuru with Sly and Robbie laying down some rhythms that are very good for a live recording, and in some cases a little better than the studio versions. The quality varies from track to track, but overall this is a very good disc. Many of the vocal harmonies come through quite clearly, but at other times not as well, but this is still very listenable. Other than the fact the running time is about 38 minutes this cd is still worth the price, other than that you won't be dissapointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD....mostly.......2003-08-19

The CD could be a bit longer. The sound is ok, this is one of those must have CDs that sound great on warm summer days when you have the reggae pumping out of all your speakers. This is a mainstay in my changer for surf trips.

3 out of 5 stars Decent live disc.......2002-08-23

"Tear It Up" doesn't completely do what its title promises, but it's a worthwhile purchase for the Black Uhuru completist. The band plays for an enthusiastic crowd at London's Rainbow Theatre in 1981, and seems to give the fans what they want. While good, it's not completely what I want. For one thing, the sound is mediocre, particularly Michael Rose's vocals. A cleaner sound what undoubtedly help. And since this is pre- "Red" and "Chill Out" the song selection is limited. In fact, six of the eight songs here are on the studio disc, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." Really, unless you want a lot of Black Uhuru, stick with that fine album, which has better sound, better performances and the long versions of each song, featuring dub versions. The total time on this live disc is pretty scimpy, too.

5 out of 5 stars best live reggae album ever.......2001-07-12

Crucial! This belongs in every reggae collection.

Killer set of music from London with the band hitting on all cylinders...Sly and Robbie lay down serious dub riddim and the vocal harmonies are very clean for a live session.

All the songs come from the guess who's coming to dinner album, but there is much more energy on the live album. Take this raw energy over the studio effects and you'll be rewarded Irie stylee

      5 out of 5 stars Prime Uhuru.......2000-09-28

This live set from 1982 features VERY heavy dub-style reggae performed by what is generally regarded as the "classic" Uhuru line-up. Michael Rose and Puma Jones join mainstay Duckie Simpson on vocals, and the rhythm section consists of the incomparable Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (who are at or near the absolute peak of their powers here.) By the standards of its era, the live mix and recording quality are quite good, particularly the HUGE-sounding bass and drums. The set list is well-chosen and played with admirable tightness and passion. My only complaint would be with regards to playtime -- at just over a half hour, the disc clocks in a bit lean. Nonetheless, this is IMHO one of the finest BU releases (along with "Red" and "Sinsemila") -- which is to say, some of the very best reggae you can buy.

If you held off getting "I Get Wet" and any other Andrew W.K.
material, you should buy this Single/DVD set. For about $5 you get
two tracks on the CD off of his new album("The Wolf"), his first three music videos("Party Hard", "She Is Beautiful", and "We Want Fun"), and live footage that includes him preforming "Party Hard"
live(he creates a giant mosh pit while singing). For a small price
you get double the feautures of any normal single. "Tear It Up" is an O.K. track but "Your Rules" sounds a bit too much like his other songs, but the DVD is well worth the price.

Andrew W.K. is exdraordinary live, and the DVD is just a small fraction of how his shows are. This is definitely a good buy, since you get two new songs and music videos. I would recomment this for anyone who likes Andrew W.K.

4 out of 5 stars Elvis was not the only Rocker in 1954-55........2004-07-24

Elvis was not the only rocker in 1954-55.

The Rock`n Roll Trio was the legendary group that during 1955-57 recorded 2 album`s worth of material.

Their pioneer rockabilly/rhythm`n blues music has been higly influential on bands like the Yardbirds, Johnny Kid and the Pirates and the Downliners Sect.

The band consisted of the two Burnette brothers Johnny and Dorsey and their friend, lead guitarist Paul Burlison. Both brothers wrote a lot of great songs, some of which were hits for acts like Ricky Nelson.

Their first album, simply called "The Rock `n` Roll Trio" was released as a 10 inch LP on Coral records in early 1957. The album caused considerably excitement among rockabilly fans, but was soon deleted. The album that curiously did not include their 1956 single "Tear it Up" soon became a real collector`s item.

In 1966 the album was rereleased on the Ace of Hearts label, at a time when the trio had been disbanded for years. Singer Johnny Burnette had died in a drowning accident in 1964.

Their material was mixture of Burnette originals and tunes borrowed from other rock`n roll pioneers like Fats Domino and Joe Turner.

The first albums opens with the great rocker "Honey Hush" with the great distorted guitar-riff.

More rockers of the same type follows; best of which are "All by Myself", "The Train Kept a Rollin" and "Drinkin`Wine Spo-Dee-O Dee, Drinking"

A few Buddy Holly-type ballads can also be found. ( "I Just Found Out" and "I Love You So" )
A little bit of country on "Lonesome Train" and sheer blues on "Chains of Love".

Their second album called "Tear it Up", released after their split shows a greater variety of styles. Highlights are the rocking single-track "Tear it Up", "You`re Undecided" and "Midnight Train" - all Burnette originals.

The playing and singing is terrific and overall there`s a lot of energy in these recordings. After 10-15 tracks though, the songs may sound a little too much alike and repetitive.

2 out of 5 stars You can't forget Elvis, no matter what..........2004-07-20

Listening to The Johnny Burnette Trio will make you forget about early Elvis? You have got to be kidding!! Johnny Burnette was a great singer, his lead guitarrist was a genius and he (Johnny), may have tried - albeit too hard -, in the early rockabilly days to make anyone listening forget about Elvis
( who had himself, by 1956, dumped straight rockabilly, which he in turn, along Scotty Moore and Bill Black, invented, albeit inadvertantly, on July 5, 1954), but he failed miserably at this close to impossible task.

Here's a task for you listeners: have a go at the entire 1950's repertoire, back to back, by the Johnny Burnette trio, then do yourself a favor, and listen just to Elvis 1954-1958 rockers, also back to back. Try then, if you must, to obliterate Elvis from your mind...

I suggest you hear the following songs, all mostly lessons and how to sing different type of rock, written and performed previously by great bluesmen or rockers themselves:

          Mystery Train/Good Rocking tonight/Baby, let's play house/Trying to get to you/My baby left me/Lawdy Miss Clawdy/Shake Rattle and Roll/Blue Suede Shoes/I got a woman/Reddy Teddy/Long Tall Sally/One-sided love affair/So glad you're mine/Hound Dog/Mean woman blues/Got a lot of living to do/Jailhouse Rock/Hard headed woman and, lastly, A big hunk of love.

Now, who do you want to forget?? The truth of the matter, the unvarnished truth that is, is that the Johnny Burnette Trio, no matter how good at doing early rockabilly, sound extremely repetitive after say, ten or twenty songs.

Not only is their sound repetitive, but so is their delivery.

4 out of 5 stars Stray Cats fans should like this..........2000-12-01

While all this stuff was recorded in the 50's, the sound is incredibly modern. The guitar playing by Paul B. is so top notch, it is unlikely you will find any better. This is a wilder type of rockabilly that's closer to Gene Vincent than Elvis Presley, but still great either way.

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the King!.......1999-09-12

He drove a truck for Crown Electric, lived in Memphis, died young, and started rock and roll. Are you thinkin'Elvis? I'm thinkin' Johnny Burnette! Honey HUSH!

5 out of 5 stars This is where ROCK started.......1998-10-11

Forget Elvis man, Johnny Burnette, Dorsey Burnette and Paul Burlinson, were the guys who started it all. Some of these tracks from the mid 50s are like punk tracks from 1977. From the vocals to the guitar licks, this CD rocks!!!!
