Electric Warrior, T. Rex's best album, distills elements of Marc Bolan's earlier acoustic period with a dynamic rock rhythm section--drummer Bill Legend and bassist Steve Currie--and lush arrangements by producer Tony Visconti. Featuring the classics "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Jeepster," and "Mambo Sun," Warrior ranges from the space blues of "Lean Woman Blues" to the punk jazz of "Rip Off," with a sound fleshed out by chamber strings and the falsetto harmonies of ex-Turtles and Mothers of Invention members Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. (Zappa sideman Ian McDonald plays sax as well.) Touches such as the arcing cellos of "Cosmic Dancer" and the sexy rhythms of "Planet Queen" perfectly bring to life Bolan's imaginative world of "diamond star halos" and "shadowless horses." A must for any serious collector of British rock classics. This remastered reissue is fleshed out with a half-dozen bonus tracks and a band interview. --James Rotondi

4 out of 5 stars Glam Cannon.......2007-07-22

Such a cool album. Bolan's voice is still unique. People just getting into it might not like it at first, but it does grow on you. Its a great record to throw on when you're on a drive, or just hanging out. Great party record. Don't have much time for Cosmic Dancer, but when you've gotten beyond Jeepster and Bang a Gong, check out my two favorites, Hot Love and Raw Ramp. Classics one and all.

5 out of 5 stars Marc Bolan's Calling Card!.......2007-05-17

This album captured a defining moment in rock and musical history, and made 1971 all the more 'cosmic', as well as honestly creating a genre imitated by many other bands whether consciously or unconsciously. It remains a sad reminder to his loyal fans of what a wonderful gift of music this man contributed to the world. His music is like a warm fragrant summer breeze that makes you happy to be alive.....and also reminds you how frail and precious life can be. It is his first venture into a 'full' rock band and rock album, yet still retains the spiritual feel and lyrical content of his previous albums, to a degree. It probably is his best album from a critic's and the average listening public's point of view; Commercially his best album in the States, while scoring a top ten hit with 'Bang A Gong'. 'Cosmic Dancer' is a revelation, 'Bang A Gong' is his signature song and a terrific rocker that is subtle and explosive at the same time, 'Jeepster' is Marc Bolan doing 50's rock and roll with fuzz and is so cool!'Planet Queen' could have been a huge hit I'm sure...'Life's A Gas' has such a classic hook and a winner as well as sad too...'Monolith' is so 'pre' 'Dark Side Of The Moon' sounding, and actually is as good as anything on that album (Floyd is awesome though).'Girl' reminds me of John Lennon, and even more of a style Bowie would take on, and is a beautiful song.'Rip Off' is like something off from a Stones album from that time period, yet all Bolan!'The Motivator' is a catchy song with a good driving force, 'Mambo Sun' is the great opener and mood setter for the album,'Lean Woman Blues' is a great "happy" blues song, and almost a live, written on the spot kind of song!
To sum it up, get this album- it's classic and takes you to another plane of consciousness if you let it!

5 out of 5 stars THE ELECTRIC WARRIOR!!!.......2007-05-12

"The Electric Warrior" is an album which was created at the beginning
of the English Glam Rock movement ."The Electric Warrior" served as
a template for Mott the Hoople and David Bowie .Marc Bolan combined
acoustic guitar work and classical orchestration with electric guitar
riffs .The result of that combination is the tour de force known as
"The Electric Warrior ".Poetic lyrics written by Marc Bolan augment
the melodious sounds .Bonus tracks such as "Hot Love" and "Raw Ramp"
make this superior magnum opus even better .Flo and Eddie of "The
Turtles" are Marc Bolan's background vocalists on this album !Buy the Rhino version of this album .

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Underappreciated.......2007-03-21

This album should really be considered one of the great classics of rock, but seems to often be overlooked. Many people seem to have either never heard of T. Rex, to mistake them for some 80's band (I have no idea what they are talkign about), or to only know "Bang a Gong." This album literally has no clunkers; every track is essential. Next to Bowie's indispensable glam albums, this is the best of the genre and really some of the best rock recorded. The orchestration always works, never coming off as too slick etc., and the guitar is really killer. There are great riffs and tasty solos. Several of these songs, such as the hits "Jeepster" and "Bang a Gong,' and the superb should be classic "Mambo Sun" are simply iresistibly groovin' tracks that make you want to get up and move. "Rip Off," the album's closer is an amazing track as well, almost a jazzish punk track, that rocks hard. Really though, any songs that I didn't mention, were omitted for the sake of this review's brevity; in all honesty, every track is not merely enjoyable, but vital, carefully crafted, and simply tremendous. Do not hesitate to get this album; you will be glad you've discovered T. Rex if this is your first exposure to the group, they were a real treasure that's never been appreciated quite the way they deserved (especially Bolan).Few albums are more enjoyable than this one.

Despite scoring only one sizable American hit ("Bang a Gong") during its lifespan, Marc Bolan's T. Rex was one of the most influential rock acts of the '70s. This 23-track, digitally remastered anthology moves from the band's original, late-'60s roots as Tyrannosaurus Rex to the acoustic neo-folk duo of Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took to its more familiar electrified early-'70s incarnation. While many of his U.K. peers were smitten with prog-rock excesses and album-length ruminations during that period, Bolan obsessed on the pop-single form, stripping his music down to the elemental rock hooks of "Ride a White Swan" and the minimalist cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues." Coupled with a glam-era sense of style, his was a pop sensibility that presaged much of the succeeding waves of punk and new wave, hard rock and glam metal. Indeed, "Metal Guru" and "Children of the Revolution" now sound like clarion calls. If, as singles like "Gong," "Telegram Sam," and "Jeepster" indicate, Bolan was working from formula, it was an undeniably infectious one. And what could be more of an ironic tribute that a quarter-century after Bolan's untimely death in a car accident, his ballsy "20th Century Boy" became the soundtrack to a car advertising campaign? --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bolan Collection To Date.......2007-05-31

I've heard it said that the only other artist to have more official posthumous releases than Marc Bolan is Jimi Hendrix. Since Marc's death in 1977, there have been numerous greatest hits collections, outtake collections, live concerts, and album re-releases. And the quality of these releases has been as varied as the albums themselves due to sound quality and song selection. Almost all of the prior hits collections were limited to either 1967-1971 or 1972-1977. You got one or the other.

Finally, we have a collection that takes the best from all eras: Marc's hippy-acoustic Tyrannosaurus Rex days through the mega-hit pop machine, T. Rex. It appears someone finally resolved all the legal matters that prevented a full greatest hits release in the past, giving listeners a complete picture of the man and his music.

People looking for Bolan's signature songs will fine them here: "Ride A White Swan," "Hot Love," "Get It On (Bang A Gong)," "Children Of The Revolution," "20th Century Boy," and "I Love To Boogie."

Being an avid Bolan fan and collector, there's never going to be the perfect representation of T. Rex on disc. To me, almost ALL of Marc's music was phenomenal. The exception would be a few tracks off of "Bolan's Zip Gun." But this album manages to come the closest I've seen to give a complete picture, picking the hits and giving the listener the T. Rex experience.

5 out of 5 stars Bang a gong!!!!!.......2007-05-07

Marc Bolan is one of the most underrated rock geniuses of all-time .
David Bowie's early recordings evince that David was unequivocally
influenced by Marc Bolan ."Hot Love","Raw Ramp","Bang a gong","Jeepster",
and "Metal Guru" are five great songs included in this collection .Every
song on this CD is worth listening to.The album is a bargain ,since
you will get 23 songs for $12.99 if you buy it .Marc Bolan was a
fine poet and a fine musician .Great Britain lost a true pioneer
when Marc died .Marc is considered by many people as the progenitor
of glam rock ,and this CD is proof of that fact .

4 out of 5 stars 20th Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection.......2007-04-05

As with all greatest hits discs- you can only please some of the people some of the time, there will always be one or two songs left out that should have been included.

The main reason I bought the album was to update an old greatest hits disc- definitely worth it (even considering shipping and the exchange rate). The remastered disc sounds fantastic given the age of the material and the limitations of the cd format.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Marc Bolan & T. Rex Collection Available........2007-01-08

Though they've sadly fallen into the long, long list of underrated classic rock acts, Marc Bolan & T. Rex were the most influential band of the glam rock movement of the early 1970s', and though they're not as inherently popular as they were thrity years ago, their music does live on.

Lead by the legendary Marc Bolan, T. Rex created a string of early 1970s' rock classics, including "Ride A White Swan", "Hot Love", "Raw Ramp", "Cosmic Dancer", "Metal Guru", "Children Of The Revolution", "Born To Boogie" and the all time classsics "Bang A Gang (Get It On)" and "20th Century Boy".

"2oth Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection" contains all of those tracks as several other recrdings dating back to their earliest recording as Tyrannosaurus Rex from 1968. All of these songs have been digitially remastered, and they sound excellent. The liner notes by Dave Thompson make for an interesting read, and the price and packaging are also first rate. This is definitely a must have collection

5 out of 5 stars Slider, you rock!!!.......2007-03-21

This one of my favorite T. Rex albums. I never get tired of this material. I have been listening to this album for over 30 years now and it's still rocks! This two disc set is just great. I love everything about it. The packaging, the essay about the album, but most of all, the music. Bolan was on a roll. The sound on this is the best yet, I had second thoughts about buying this for the third time, but I am glad I did. The sound beats any of the previous issues of this album. The first CD I bought of this album in 1986, made in France, had more bonus tracks, these were singles issued around the same time as the album. Fortunately these are on The Wax Singles, A's & B's 1972-77, so I haven't missed any of this great material. The second disc titled "Rabbit Fighter" is a very nice compliment to the album. Almost the entire album in alternate takes and mixes. This and "Electric Warrior" are two of the best of all time. A must have, especially for T. Rex fans.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underated album's of all time.......2006-11-06

for some reason, Marc Bolan never has recieved the fame in current day United States that he should of. This album is a classic and one of my all-time favorites. the first time i heard it, it was so overwhelmingly good i didnt know how to handle it. now, every time i hear it, it gets better and better. if you are interested in listening to T. Rex, go for 'Electric Warrior' first, then this 'The Slider.'

5 out of 5 stars Many thanks to RHINO.......2006-02-02

I was in my early teens and The Slider was one of the first, if not the first, record I purchased. T Rex was my first concert I attended also - happened to be on my 14th Birthday. So will be bias in my review. But received the double CD in the mail yesterday, and enjoyed opening this CD immensely. Rhino has packaged the CD beautifully, including a nice booklet. I have listened to The Slider CD, and part way through the alternative mix CD, and the sound quality seems excellent. It is more than appreciated that a record company would take so much care and I suggest that any T Rex fan, young or old in years, or long term or a more recent devotee, should buy this CD. Electric Warrior may be my favourite T Rex album, but The Slider has many outstanding songs, including the title track, Ballrooms of Mars and Main Man, hit singles in Metal Guru and Telegram Sam, and the odd rocker in Buick Mackane. Although a pioneer in Glam Rock, I think both Electric Warrior and The Slider show Marc Bolan and T Rex had substance.

3 out of 5 stars "I wanna call ya . . .".......2006-01-22

" . . . I wanna ball ya, eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww!" - "Baby Strange"

Wow people! It just doesn't get any more brilliant than that!

Seriously though, there's a reason why T. Rex's music isn't widely known today. Aside from a few choice songs, it really isn't all that great and most of it sounds pretty dated. Today, the majority of T. Rex's music sounds like fairly run-of-the-mill "boogie-woogie" rock n' roll. Marc Bolan does deserve credit for spearheading Glam Rock, but he was soon surpassed by David Bowie who made the timeless glam-rock classic ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS.

If you're new to T. Rex, just be aware that this forum attracts a lot of non-objective worship from die-hard fans. It's perfectly understandable that some people like this music, but moreso for those who were actually around to witness the glam rock craze unfold.

5 out of 5 stars T. Rex at their peak.......2005-11-12

T. Rex and Marc Bolan had the U.K. wrapped around their fingers from 1971 to 1973 as "Trextasy" was at its height. In 1971 the band released the seminal "Electric Warrior", which launched the band into stardom. Surprisingly, they raised the bar (and then some) once more with "The Slider".

Featuring two U.K. number one hit singles, -- the effervescent "Metal Guru" and the bluesy pop of "Telegram Sam -- "The Slider" is the band's best produced album and arguably the most accessible. The strings give the songs -- with their rough glam guitar -- more ground and a more lush setting, that pairs nicely with Bolan's earthly poetic lyrics. The title track is an esspecially great groove-filled song with an odd use of vocals as an instrument (other than singing).

The rough glam tracks like "Buick Mackane", "Chariot Choogle", and "Baby Boomerang" work well with slower ballads like "Main Man", "Mystic Lady", and the simplistic acoustic sound of "Spaceball Ricochet". The lyrical content still uses the same whimsical storytelling from his previous work, which is certainly a good thing. And the background vocals are used much in the same way as on "Electric Warrior", sometimes gratuitously, but usually effectively.

The remastering is done excellently, very much like the other re-releases done for the T. Rex catalogue. The crafty production of Tony Visconti (who was at his best at the time) and the mixing highlights the skill of Mickey Finn and Bolan's playing nicely. The bonus disc is a good treat as well, giving an alternative take of each track on the album, which are usually demos or acoustic sessions.

This album helps prove that Marc Bolan was one of the truly great prolific songwriters of his day, despite his steady decline in the mid-70's and his eventual tragic death. Thankfully, the songs still hold up today, showing the strength of his words and music.

Album Description

Breakfast on Pluto follows the exploits of Patrick "Kitten" Braden, an endearing but deceptively tough young man. Abandoned as a baby in his small Irish hometown, and aware from a very early age that he is different, Patrick survives a harsh environment with the aid of his wit and charm, plus a sweet refusal to let anyone or anything change who he is. Apart from a few moments of piano music composed by Jordan's daughter, Anna Jordan, the film avoids a conventional score.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pluto excellent.......2006-11-10

Great for us baby-boomers. But surely the music must appeal to all age groups- and it's from a delightful film.

4 out of 5 stars A Four Star 'Breakfast'.......2006-07-29

Although some of the songs on this soundtrack aren't nearly as good as the others, it's well worth it for the ones that stand out. This is not your typical soundtrack with popular songs that everyone will know - in fact, the best ones are those that I hadn't heard before.
Highlights - 'Sugar Baby Love' 'Good Looking Woman' 'Breakfast on Pluto' 'Sand' 'Children of the Revolution' and 'Wig Wam Bam'
This is definitely a great soundtrack as far as soundtracks go and worth more than what it costs in dollars.

1 out of 5 stars The good songs are missing.......2006-06-07

The soundtrack to this movie was ecclectic and truly great. The movie mixed Gavin Friday rockers with Van Morrison's Madam George with The Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth and added several really great songs by virtual unknowns. Unfortunately, whoever selected the songs for this CD thought commonplace marginal songs like Patti Page's How much is that doggie in the window or Bobby Goldsboro's Honey was the key to capturing the essense of this movie. It boggles the mind. There are a few good songs on the CD like Sugar Baby Love,Children of the Revlolution and a Gavin Friday or two song but It's unfortunate that you can't get all of the really good songs from this movie and have to settle for watching the movie so that you can hear snippits of the best songs in the movie....but I'd rather do that than listen to dribble like Morris Alberts Wedding fare, Feelings. Save Your Money!

5 out of 5 stars Anna Jordan Strings Together a Strand of Stars.......2006-04-23

Anna Jordan is the one to whom this outstanding musical score for the delightful BREAKFAST ON PLUTO film, a story about a young Patrick 'Kitten' Jordan who lives his misunderstood life in the 1970s as though he were out somewhere in the cosmos, is attributed. Actually Jordan contributes some fine original music to the flow of the film, but her biggest contribution is her selection of oldies but goodies from the 60s and 70s that capture the aura of Neil Jordan's fine and sensitive adaptation of the Patrick McCabe novel.

For those of us who were a part of that musical period this recording will serve as a collection of many favorites placed in a sequence that is endearing. The Rubettes version of 'Sugar Baby Love' floats along with Joe Dolan's 'You?re Such a Good Looking Woman' and Harry Nilsson's 'You're Breakin' My Heart' and 'Me and My Arrow', while Patti Page croons 'Doggie in the Window', Dusty Springfield offers 'The Windmills of your Mind', and Morris Alberts gives us 'Feelings'.

The CD is well recorded and the positioning of the songs is excellent for easy and memorable listening. Not being one who usually goes for soundtracks of films (with a few notable exceptions), this recording is full of songs that bring back many good memories and they are not tampered with to try to update them. A good buy, this. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Pluto - Hooray!.......2006-02-22

I adored the movie, and the music was an integral part of that enjoyment. I was afraid there would be no soundtrack and was ecstatic when it became available. Got the CD yesterday and haven't stopped playing it. Absolutely delightful. Many of the songs utterly infectious. Can hardly rate highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars not bolan's first electric album but maybe his best.......2007-06-09

Beard of stars introduced audiences to the possibilities of marc bolan in an electric setting... T. rex cemented the vision in characteristic good form.. Marc bolan was not quite as well recieved in america as abroad but his star did shine every bit as bright as david bowie or anyone else in the so-called glam genre. Actually, when these first albums were released glam was not even born yet - not even a concept.. Bolan emerged from the same folk-rock, experimental stock that david bowie took root with in the 60's.. Not far from syd barrett his early releases with tyrannausauras rex were eerie, melodic, and quite stirring on a very basic almost mythological level.. Beard of stars, as i mentioned earlier, made a change in a new direction.. With 't-rex' the first album to abreviate the band's name came the first really commerically friendly (and yet very different musically speaking) tunes.. Bolan and mickey fin had developed an infectious boogie style (which became a t. rex trademark throughout the 70's until bolan's death)... Despite these breakthroughs, the album is still not the typical fare you would expect from a big-selling group (or duo).. it opens in a curious fashion with 'the children of rarn' (thank god bolan always was a true original i just love it).. and always retains a sort of curious almost psychodelic and yet modern sounding quality.. In fact it was this kind of music that defied categorization that probably lead to the term glam (which is not really a useful musical term because it says virtually nothing about the music - oh well we must catogorize i guess)... The music really heats up on such tracks as beltane walk and one-inch rock - a song writing technique that would later reach for the stars in 'electric warrior' - yet for me it is the little tracks in between that make the album (as in many t rex albums).. The world really could not see marc bolan coming - but when they did it was almost too late - another shooting star...

5 out of 5 stars ECLECTIC WARRIOR.......2006-07-01

"Electric Warrior" may have surprised a good many people, but only those who had not been paying attention. Through the folky haze of their formative years, before Bolan saw the dinosaur move, Tyrannosaurus Rex had already spun out dozens of great riffs and wonderful, highly stylized songs that struggled to find much of an audience. We could trade pre-electric playlists all day long. The fact remains that until Leo Fender and Les Paul put in their first appearance with the band by the light of the magical moon on "Beard of Stars" -- still a few years prior to the Big Bang -- it seemed that a significant audience might never arrive. But still, with all those years of simple acoustic accompaniment as ballast, this rewired T. Rex produced what might be their most characteristic record. Perhaps, arguably, their best. It's a polarizing thought, "T. Rex" vs. "Electric Warrior", on par with the "Revolver" vs. "Sergeant Pepper" debate. But the question is not without merit. (For the record, my votes go to "Revolver" and "T. Rex".)

The pose here is pre-glam, more candid, less rehearsed. There is a weird, beautiful shimmer and gleam to these songs that still has the innocent waxy glow of the right honorable early days -- a glow that becomes a hard silicon shine on "Electric Warrior." These songs are still sentimental, still strangely strange and still comparatively as eclectic as they are electric. And lurking behind almost every track, just within earshot, is that thing that became so destructively popular. That twitchy hiccup on top of a four-square beat, solid as rock, fluid as folk, light as air and bright as a star.

Since the source material is better to begin with, the sonic improvements here are not as spectacular as the much needed salvation work done to the still earlier Regal Zonophone recordings. That narrow range of acoustic guitar matched so closely to Bolan's voice that is typical of the earlier records is not an easy sound to deal with in the first place. Thanks to Visconti's and Bolan's maturing producing, writing and performing abilities "T. Rex" sounded pretty good when it was first released. The remastering is carefully done with an emphasis on preserving the thin, concise quality of Bolan's pre-Warrior sound. And the bonus tracks -- there are so many now, on so many different releases that it's getting tough to keep up -- are interesting enough and smart enough to include the "Ride a White Swan" single which was on the US album, but not on this, the original UK version.

"T. Rex" is one of those pure and eccentric records that come around now again -- products of those transitional times when a style is fully formed but hasn't quite yet been set in stone. You know, the kind of stone that guarantees vast success in exchange for rigid predictability. From this vantage point we still have "Warrior" and "Slider" to look forward to before things begin to get a little too slick. And, once more, we have the chance to spend another golden moment in Summer Deep.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and spiritual Bolan album, mature and ethereal........2006-06-06

This has to be my personal favorite 'on a spiritual level' and his most transitional as well. I am moved so by his music, and especially this masterpiece. His later work such as Warrior, Slider, and Tanx have to be some of the most exciting music ever, but this album is just brimming with something obvious and yet subtle- I can't put my finger on it! Ethereal and almost otherworldly- the only way to describe it is to suggest he wrote it from somewhere beyond consciousness, yet while still conscious- or from beyond the grave and yet still living......it doesn't really contain any real commercial stand outs, or defining songs(except the bonus song 'Ride a White Swan'), but is a sort of 1970 suburban/garage band/fantasia/simply complex plethora of guitar-wah wah-poetic imagery-stream of consciousness-inspired cosmic dittys. This album is somewhat different from Beard of Stars in the lyrical content- but the guitar is similar and more refined to a tasteful sound. Beard is more fantasy/King Arthur-ish/Tolkien meets Hendrix(no disrespect to Jimmy intended).Unicorn and Beard of Stars leave me with an image of Marc writing songs on the hill of Glastonbury Abbey or in the shade of a great castle. This album is more of a current(1970) state of being, more focused on now versus then. I picture him writing these songs on a cool English morning perhaps recording early demos in a makeshift studio in a garage, with the door wide open to a field of beautiful flowers overlooking a lake with a breeze rippling the deep blue waters .....wait, I'm getting ahead of myself! Unique album, and I guess I would have to say it was another moment in time that Marc captured, and thankfully left us from his short life. The first song draws you in-'The Children of Rarn', beckoning you to enter this adventure like a childe entering the world, or a mind travelling to a more cosmic dimensional plane, a crossroads akin to a matrix - then suddenly in a loud distorted ,earthy, heartbeating drum- thumping you are suddenly forced to listen to 'Jewel' which is a good, noisy, bluesy rock and roll riff song about a woman called Jewel(mother or witch?). Next is the song simply entitled 'The Visit', a beautiful song about, perhaps a visitor from somewhere distant, or alien, or perhaps he is the visitor ala' 'Cosmic Dancer'? The following song is 'Childe' which is very hypnotic, strange, and yet pleasing to listen to, and I cannot fathom it other than a song about giving to others what he wishes he himself had. 'The Time of Love is Now' is another beautiful, yet in-your-face urgent message from Marc, and very spiritual, almost an American Indian sounding middle/solo with a flute. Inspirational and a message that makes no sense, yet the message gets into your subconscious and then you know what it really means, I guess. 'Diamond Meadows' has lush backing of violins similar to the Beatles 'Yesterday', and the melody is absolutely sweet as it gets. 'Root of Star' is my favorite song on the album. Simply beautiful. It has an Eastern, as well as a western, cosmic/spiritual/shamanistic/tribal/wah-wah essence to it. Next we are at first teased by what sounds like a last minute tuning of a guitar then hit with the absolute coolest, distorted, simple, almost flatulent sounding notes, followed by optimistic, sunny stringed orchestral envelopment in the song 'Beltane Walk'.'Is It Love' is next, and even more distortion to the point of distorted distortion! Simple song but catchy and great guitar hook! 'One Inch Rock' is re-invented once more after previously being in earlier material- and simply fun fantasy rock. 'Summer Deep' is a hook filled song, and uplifting:Tyranasaurus Rex meets T. Rex in the most absolute way! 'Seagull Woman' is remindful of the Grateful Dead' but more powerful and melodic, and sweet and sad, yet bittersweet at the same time in lyrics and instrumentation. I love this song like a child of my own! 'Suneye' is next, and I think of John Lennon, lyrics and music reminiscent of 'Julia' off from the White album or 'Look at Me' off the Plastic Ono Band album.'The Wizard' is very very long, and yet also hypnotic and another rehashing, or should I say 're-hatching' of an earlier concept that, probably only would fit onto Bolan's first Tyrannasaurus Rex album other than this one.The closing song is the reprise to 'The Children of Rarn', and thus ends the complete cycle to this masterpiece! What follows on this extended cut version of the album is the seminal, and relative T. Rex incarnate sound of 'Ride a White Swan'(probably should have been included as a cut originally to this set). 'Summertime Blues' ushers us into the true inspiration to Marc Bolan's rock and roll roots, namely Eddie Cochran. Incidentally didn't Eddie die young in a car crash? The remaining versions of previous songs follow, but they are not too much different than their final versions. Buy this album, you won't be dissapointed- just make sure you listen to it two or three times then you will be hooked!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Dawn of T. Rex.......2006-03-03

This magical album for Marc Bolan and his newly christened band T. Rex is a wonderful timepiece from the 1970's. It is the perfect mix of Bolan's fanciful imagination, his lyrical poetry, and producer Tony Visconti's string arrangements. It would be the album that launched the T. Rex craze in Britain for the next three years.
The "T. Rex" album marked the transition from Bolan's gentle Tolkien inspired Tyrannosaurus Rex acoustic days to the Electric Warrior, the king of fashion conscious, mascara heavy Glam Rock. Many early fans were quite disappointed with the change, as their homegrown favorite had now become the darling of the teenage set. The single "Ride a White Swan" from this time (that should be included on this CD) paved the way for the T. Rex hit machine, and was a staple in Bolan's live set until his all-too-early death in 1977. It was a huge hit in the UK and has been covered numerous times since Bolan's death.

The album opens with the short intro "The Children Of Rarn," Bolan's own piece of mythology that bridges the divide between Tyrannosaurus Rex to T. Rex beautifully. Interestingly enough, Marc had created a whole 20 minute piece around this track ("The Children of Rarn Suite") that didn't see the light of day until Tony Visconti released a version back in 1978. It could have been a wonderful concept piece. The songs that follow on the album are simply beautiful works of poetry set to music. Highlights are "Jewel," "The Visit," "Summer Deep," and "Diamond Meadows" (most recently heard in the movie "Velvet Goldmine").

While each T. Rex album is near and dear to my heart, this probably isn't the best place to start if you're interested in Marc Bolan and his band. The album of choice for a starting point would be "Electric Warrior," followed by "The Slider," then this album. Once you're under Bolan's spell, you're hooked!

5 out of 5 stars Blend of acoustic and electric styles remains Bolan's best.......2005-03-14

In a rather ecstatic review for the earlier unremastered Castle
CD of this first T.Rex album from 1970, I declared it Bolan's absolute best, a transitional work that combined prime but far more accessible examples of the earlier acoustic Tyrannosaurus Rex sound ("The Visit", "The Time Of Love Is Now", "Root Of Star") with thrilling embryonic versions of the T.Rex electric pop sound ("Jewel", "Childe", "Beltane Walk", "Is It Love?", "One Inch Rock"), with not a single weak track in sight and capturing Bolan's magical personality at its purest. The last album with the two-man lineup of Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn, it was also the first album to feature strings, drums and Flo & Eddie on backing vocals (albeit on only one song, the gorgeous "Seagull Woman").

My opinion remains unchanged and has only grown with time; what was always frustrating was the thin sound of all previous CD releases, which did not do justice to such an important work. This latest deluxe reissue finally gives the album its due, with a loud and clear remaster that highlights every explosive guitar solo, epic scream and production trick. The lyrics and artwork
are restored, although unfortunately the bonus tracks are the weakest of all the remasters: while the seminal non-LP single "Ride A White Swan"/"Summertime Blues" is included, the outtakes sound almost identical to the released versions despite being labeled "works in progress". Outside of a slight remix, I found nary a difference to the album versions. What's more, the fantastic instrumental outtake "Deep Summer" is not included, one of the few T.Rex cuts to remain in the hands of the bootleggers. Despite this, I would recommend everyone get their hands on a copy of this reissue, if only for the quality of the album itself, combined with the vastly improved sound.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

5 out of 5 stars The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best cd I have ever bought.......1999-10-27

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

Album Description

The phenomenally popular and influential T.Rex spearheaded the glam-rock movement, a genre owing everything to its quintessential superstar, Marc Bolan. Rivaled only by Bowie, whose own glam period followed in their flamboyant footsteps, Bolan and T.Rex created an incredible vibe and sound whose legacy lives. Driven by primal grooves, effortless hooks, trippy vocals, and deliciously fat guitar riffs, their music was both infused with hippie spirituality and raw sexuality-a rich, ripe, sonic delight both primitive and evolved. While their music defined an era, their irresistible grooves are timeless, and Bolan's later, more experimental tracks, marrying pop genius with creative expansion and proto-punk power, underscore his groundbreaking artistry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars T. Rex's Tanx (1973).......2007-03-30

This album to me represents the last great T. Rex album. This was Marc Bolan's attempt at breaking big in America after having conquered the UK charts. It ranks as my favorite T. Rex album, (actually, my favorite album of all time) with some of Marc's most melodic songs.
After the phenomenal success of "Electric Warrior" and "The Slider," Marc's record company expected big things. What Marc gave them was "Tanx;" an album very different from its predecessors. Unfortunately, the critics and many of the fans didn't like the direction Marc took and the album was deemed a disappointment.

Why is this my favorite album of all time? When I first came upon this album several years ago, after all the bad critical press it got, I was expecting the worst. My thought was, Heck, I loved Electric Warrior and The Slider, how bad could this be? I put the needle down on the turntable and was captivated for the next 40 minutes or so.

"Oh, my darling there are many ways..." The album opens with the guitar boogie and spacey lyrics of "Tenement Lady," a combination of two songs. You'll note on disc 2, it's listed as "Tenement Lady/Darling". Two songs fused together into one great one. Lots of great production work on this one.

"Your mama said, clean out your head, boy..." Next is "Rapids," with lots of guitar slide overdubs. Again, lots of spacey lyrics in a Bolan boogie mind poem.

"I'm just lookin' for a change in my luck.." "Mister Mister" is great light acoustic song with a great sing-a-long at the end. Excellent orchestration by Tony Visconti.

"This is a song that I wrote when I was young..." "Broken Hearted Blues" is, to me, one of the most beautiful songs Marc Bolan ever wrote. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful orchestration, Marc in perfect voice... poetry set to music. Possibly the best song Marc ever put on an album. The only complaint I have it that it was too short.

The rest of the album just flows beautifully. From start to finish, I never skip a song. Plus you get the added bonus of the Marc's singles from '73: "Children of the Revolution," "Jitterbug Love," "Sunken Rags," "Solid Gold Easy Action," "20th Century Boy," and the beautiful "Free Angel".

Disc 2 is made up of alternate takes. It gives you some insight into the workings of the songs a they developed from the rough mix stage to T. Rex classics. These outtakes were once sold separately as "Left Hand Luke: The Alternate Tanx". Here you get the whole package in one.

If you've fallen under the spell of Bolan's words and music, but don't have this album yet, get it now. This album to me is one of the best by the band, and as stated before, one of my favorites of all time.

5 out of 5 stars The great underrated T. Rex album.......2006-07-13

Tanx is a great album. It's not as great as Electric Warrior, but it's up there with The Slider as Marc Bolan's next best. This album sounds like a mix of The Stones' Exile on Main Street with Elton John albums from '71 to '74, with the important ingredient of Bolan's own electric boogie.. It's amazing that Bolan created so much great music in so many different styles. Buy this one after Electric Warrior and The Slider. It's not really represented on any of the Bolan compilations out there. It's mind boggling and sad that '73 was considered the beginning of a downturn in Bolan's career at the time when he created Tanx and "20th Century Boy" (included here)! The bonus disc of alternate takes is fascinating and a good listen in its own right. This release from Rhino Records marks the first reissue of Tanx in the U.S. since the original 1973 vinyl.

While their music defined an era, their irresistible grooves are timeless, and Bolan's later, more experimental tracks, marrying pop genius with creative expansion and proto-punk power, underscore his groundbreaking artistry.

wow. i can't believe my ears. marc, i know most people don't care for this one, but my dear lord. "i really love you, babe", those morricone harmonicas, the lead guitar, the backing vocals! at the very end, that single backing vocal, that distorted vocal of love. heart shattering stuff. i hope you still exist in some form and are still making music wherever you may be.
