A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

5 out of 5 stars Just plain good.......2007-07-16

This cd is either sold out or in short supply most places. Very limited crowd noise for a live cd. Radar Love a bit overdone but this is Golden Earring at their best.

5 out of 5 stars Live at it's best.......2005-08-02

Greeeaaaatttt live album. The live versions of Twighlight Zone and Radar Love totally blow away the studio versions. Too bad this album isn't available in most markets in the USA.

5 out of 5 stars It kicks!.......2004-09-29

"Something Heavy Going Down" was recorded live in Leiden, Holland in 1984, as a "back home" concert after their return from their final US tour. The sound very relaxed and glad to be back home. The version of "Radar Love" on this album kicks serious amounts of ass. Seriously, it rocks HEAVY and blows the studio version out of the water. There's a great version of "Long Blond Animal" (although not quite as fast and heavy as on The Last Blast Of The Century album), a cool studio recorded song (the title track), and "Mission Impossible" has a couple of terrific guitar solos. "Enough Is Enough" is pretty good, too. The only thing that's a little dissapointing is "Clear Nite Moonlight", the studio version is better in my opinion.

Overall, "Something Heavy Going Down" is a terrific live album, and is worthy to stand with "Bloody Buccaneers", "Moontan" "Last Blast Of The Century", and "Millbrook USA".

5 out of 5 stars Golden Earring at their Best!!.......2004-07-03

Great album!! Most of the songs are from the albums "Cut" and "N.E.W.S.". Golden Earring is a well oiled machine live. The songs are done just as well as the studio versions if not better. The whole band are great musicians and work so perfectly together, especially live! George Kooymans is a fantastic live guitarist, he jams and rides the music like a surfer on a wave giveng the live versions of their songs a greater appeal.
The concert is recorded in Holland and Barry talks to the audiance in Dutch. I find this a nice touch.
I spend much time on the road so I listen to allot of music, and this album never gets old.
Many of the songs can be seen on "Live From the Twilight Zone".

5 out of 5 stars Great Golden Earring Live Album.......2003-12-21

SOMETHING HEAVY GOING DOWN is a great live album by Golden Earring. It's just as good as the 1977 live album and features the same Barry Hay singing in the same mysterious baritone, sometimes going up into the tenor range. You should get this one, THE CONTINUING STORY OF RADAR LOVE, and LIVE all at once. When you think about it, Golden Earring have, since the mid-70s, been a Euro-rock version of the Outlaws, with elements of that band's guitar-jamming style blended with Pink Floyd-esque spaciness. I've listened to this CD while walking for exercise, and the fact that a 40-minute walk encompassed five or six songs proves that brevity is definitely not one of this group's strong points. But that's hardly a problem, considering that Golden Earring, along with Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent, Grand Funk Railroad, Peter Frampton, Kansas, and most of the Southern rock bands, have learned how to do long numbers well, which can be difficult for even the most skilled musicians. Overall, a wonderful album.

4 out of 5 stars Radar Love=better than the studio version.......2004-01-31

If you like Radar Love (and who doesn't?) then, this album is worth the price of admission just for that one song. The version of RL on this album totally and completely ROCKS. The into is DYNAMIC and high-powered, the lead guitar kicks a$$, and Cesar's drum solo is kickin'. The Last Blast Of The Century version of RL rocks as well, but this version has the advantage because in Last Blast, Barry Hay's vocals are a litle hoarse due to age.

During Long Blond Animal, Barry Hay tells a funny made-up story of coming home from the last US tour and finding a strange drug addict lieing on his couch.

Something Heavy Going Down is has a very slight techno/rap beat, but rest assured it's an 80's rock song, as well as the only studio recorded song on the album.

Overall a solid live album, but they've done better.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live LP Ever!.......2003-07-30

To correct the other review here, this album was released in the USA in 1984. I remember getting the LP for my birthday that year and WOW! This was a great Live album. It goes with the long out of print video "Live From The Twilight Zone" as everything was takin from that. On this CD release there are extra songs from the concert on it than what was on the US album. Only downfall of this I will say is how they censor "Long Blond Animal" when Barry Hay does his classic wise .../comedy story line in the middle by blanking out the "F" word which kinda ruins it. But I will say, if your a GE fan and never checked out any live material cause you don't like Live albums..niether do I, but I will say that GE is the only band I think is just as good if not better on some tracks live than the original studio recordings! Also, this album contains the studio recorded song "Something Heavy Going Down" which was the new track and single recorded for this LP at the time. It flopped here in the USA but I think it's one of their best songs aside from "Twilight Zone" in the 80's era! All I can say is, this is my faveorite live album of all time and well worth getting through an import to own it on CD!

4 out of 5 stars Very Strong Golden Earring Live Album.......2000-12-06

This album was only released in Europe and is the best Golden Earring electric Live Album aside from the the outstanding acoustic Naked series. Caputures the band quite well during the Cut era. For Radar Love fans, Golden Earring goes quite over the top at 9'35".
