A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

U.N.V. had something goin' on back in '93.......2005-04-07

U.N.V.(Urban Nubian Voices) came onto the scene in early 1993 with their debut album "Something's Goin' On". This CD has a mix of new jack r&b sounds and smooth slow jams. The group hailed from Detroit, MI and only released one album after this which was the self titled "Urban Nubian Voices". The best track on here is the heavy hitter self-titled "Something's Goin' On" which is in my top 5 of slow jams all-time. The group really put a great sound into this song with a great keyboard sound as well. U.N.V. had the sound of gospel group but at time they did not get marketed very well as their second album, their voices could have made them a mainstay in the industry but the music scene was in a transition from the popular new jack swing to the g-funk era at that time. Also some other standout songs are "2 B or Not 2 B", "Straight From The Heart", & "UNV Thang". Overall a very solid debut. The reason I give this CD 5 stars is because "Something's Goin' On" would get 5 stars by itself. Pick this cd if you love great old school like me.

I was given a mix cd with the song "Something's Goin' On", and loved it. I searched for over a year to find out who sang it. Finally, I've learned it's U.N.V. If you only preview the song, and don't buy the album you'll be satisfied. It's that good. If you only buy the single you'll be satisfied =).

i think unv did some wonderful tunes on this cd, though there are some hip-hop tracks but they are not so bad as to keep me away from listening to it. i really love the group, especially when i listen to "when will i know;close tonight;hold on;no one compares to you and my favoured "something's goin' on". i don't regret buying this cd, it is "rythm & blues"

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

I recently "stumbled" onto Cliff Richard again (was a fan in the 80s), not realizing what an icon he's been/still is everywhere in the world, except the US! I've since been buying everything I can get my hands on, including this, his latest CD. At first I was nostalgic for the old stuff (Devil Woman, We Don't Talk Anymore, etc.), then I really gave this one a listen. Each time I play this CD (which is everyday in the car), I have a new favorite..."I Will Not Be a Mistake," "Simplicity," "I Cannot Give You My Love," "The Day That I Stop Loving You," "I Don't Wanna Lose You." "What Car" is a blast, as is "Thousand Miles to Go"! I agree with one reviewer that Cliff isn't being marketed properly, if at all, here in the US. He could easily be in the Top 40, Country, and even Smooth Jazz markets with the mix of songs on this CD! I'm just thankful Amazon is selling it!

I bought this because I was Gibb jonesing. I hadn't heard Sir Cliff since Xanadu, but I wasn't disappointed by his performances. I'm not too much of a country fan, but he definitely has mastered that genre. Get the single for How Many Sleeps, also. All in all, it's a great set.

The Evergreen Cliff.......2005-07-04

What can one say that has not already been said by the previous reviewers. A very well balanced album with tunes that grow and grow on one. You can listen to this album over and over and not get tired of the tunes that are sung as only Cliff can do. I must agree with the reviewer that said that Cliff was not marketed properly in the States. He is popular all over the world and has had a string of number one hits in just about every country except the USA. There are a number of tracks on this album that could easily be released as singles and would all become hits. Cliff has really pulled out all the stops in what is by far the best album he has done since "Me and my Shadows" in the sixties. The studio backing group, mostly from Nashville makes the difference and Cliff performs a lot better when recording with real musicians. This album is a must even for those who are not true Cliff fans.

Cliff Keeps On Going!.......2005-06-11

Cliff Richard is into his fifth decade now as a performer and to hear this album, you would imagine that even Mr. Richard is surprised. It is a true masterpiece with (13) songs that are all vibrant and strong. Usually acts this old lose their appeal or keep on coming and Cliff Richard delivers a rich mix of songs. "Something's Goin' On" is a worthy single in a world that ignores singles. If you can get the single, the B-Side is a wonderful ditty called, "How Many Sleeps". It's just nice to hear an album that is generous in mood, variety and perfect in quality for the modern listener. This album is a keeper.
