Like the Supersuckers, Reverend Horton Heat is one of those acts that never falter from their course. Take two parts rockabilly, one quarter cow punk, and one quarter surf, and you've got the not-so-secret formula that's earned the Reverend a dedicated flock since the days of Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em. Lucky 7 comes six albums later, and it's an effortless roll through the subjects the reverend knows like the back of his hand--booze, babes, and bad reputations (or at least the kind of trouble that'll earn one the latter). Whether Heat is drinking his tequila down to the worm, chasing all the pretty girls, singing the praises of his big blue car, or dedicating multiple sermons to the legendary Jimbo, he's in fine form on Lucky, spiking every track with an equal mix of high-spirited humor and entertaining storytelling. His methodical songwriting style doesn't seem to leave him broke, so it doesn't look like he's fixing it to change it any time soon. For followers of the reverend's skirt-chasing charm, though, 7 is just as lucky as all the rest. --Jennifer Maerz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Probably their rocking best.......2006-09-21

This is pretty much a perfect album. It has hard rocking numbers like "Loco Gringos" and "..Big Blue Car" and then closes with some of the Rev's most comedic material ever about our beloved Jimbo (from Deer Park Texas Land). I saw them tour this one and they hit it hard in concert because there were so many hard songs from it. Great CD from a Great Live Band. See them in concert if you get a chance.

5 out of 5 stars The Reverend at his best form.......2005-09-24

For years, the Reverend Horton Heat has put out some of the best drugs, sex, and rock-n-roll music. He's at his best form here, and yes, if you're a guy and gone through a bad break up, songs like Galaxy 500 will probably speak to you very LOUDLY. I suppose it might speak to the ladies too, but this is definitely testosterone fueled music.

While the music really cooks and the Reverend has a great voice for the material, it's the genuine lyrics that really give this CD an extra dimension. Sure, the Reverend Horton Heat has never been one to engage into deep philosophical discussions, but he does delve into the pain and the thrills that make life worth living. And in a simple, direct way many of us can relate to. The guy certainly has a lot of heart, and I just love the Texas twang he puts on everything.

I suppose if it didn't end with a bunch of filler, it wouldn't be a Horton Heat CD but the ending filler is even good for a chuckle or two.

5 out of 5 stars Good Break Up Album.......2004-09-08

This is a good album to listen to after a break up. The wild sounds of the Reverend seem to ease the pain, after all, many of the songs on this album seem to be about breaking up, like 'Galaxie 500,' 'What's Reminding Me of You' and 'Go with Your Friends.'

The Reverend reminds us all that despite the heartache, havin' fun is truly the meaning of life, and getting wild and crazy is the secret to happiness. This music isn't called psychobilly for nothing. This music just kicks a**, and you have to listen to it REALLY LOUD.

And the icing on the cake, to top it all off, is that at the end, you find out that you have a friend in Jimbo, and he's exactly the kind of friend you're gonna need, when the going gets rough.

5 out of 5 stars Loco Gringos Like a Party!.......2004-04-22

Reverend Horton Heat harks back to the working class mania that gave birth to rock 'n' roll and rockabilly, spewing out songs about drinking, drugging and womanizing with the kind of ear-blistering ferocity that brings to mind Jerry Lee Lewis fronting the Sex Pistols. Beer, whiskey, tequila, marijuana, cigarettes, cars, pretty girls, and cocaine, these are some of the most prominent themes in this music. The good Rev has been holdin' down the rockabilly scene for nearly a decade. If you like to rock without a safety net, take a sip of the Reverend's brimstone cocktail and rejoice. This is one of the best Reverend Horton Heat Albums. Heat has returned to renowned metal producer Ed Stasium, who delivers both high-impact guitar and sufficient clarity for enjoyment of Heat's droll way with words. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Woooo!.......2003-03-25

I found that my music was getting too poppy, so i started to look heavier. And that's just what i got- toe tapping, head banging rockabilly. Think like Brian Setzer meets incubus, or Big bad voodoo daddy meets the chili peppers. This is a full-throttle, nitrous oxide injected incredible joyride of an album. I have no idea how on earth the drummer's feet (sorry, loyal fans- i don't know his name) don't fall off during the insane bass drumming on track 3- RHH's big blue car. Being a drummer myself, that must be incredubly strenuous. The level gets toned down a bit with "tiny voice of reason", but has very few low spots. "Sermon on the Jimbo" is quite funny, esp. the voices in the background going "oh no!" etc. If you too want to supercharge your music collection, this album must become a part of it.

A very cool, Limited Edition CD from Seven Mary Three entitled "B-Sides & Rarities" (Atlantic/Mammoth CD 8339-2). Includes all of the band's rare b-sides and live tracks released to date (1998) on one CD. None of these tracks are on any Seven Mary Three album (some come from compilation CDs or rare promo CDs and some are new and unavailable anywhere else). This CD was originally given away free to consumers in the US who purchased the band's second album RockCrown, and hasn't been seen since. Also includes two hidden tracks - rare mixes of Cumbersome ("acoustic" and "acoustic w/ drums") that were previously only available on a rare radio station 3 track promo CD. Tracks include...

    1. "Shelf Life" (Outtake from American Standard Sessions - released on "Crow-City of Angels" Soundtrack)
    2. "Blackwing" (Outtake from American Standard Sessions - released on "Music For Our Mother Oceans" Various Artists CD)
    3. "Lame (acoustic/electric)" (REMIXED VERSION - from "Water's Edge" European Maxi CD Single)
    4. "My My" (LIVE IN TORONTO, March 2nd 1996)
    5. "Home Stretch (acoustic/live)" (Recorded For Modern Rock Live, June 1st 1997 - COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENT)
    6. "Water's Edge (alternate/live)" (Recorded May 6, 1997 For A Live Cybercast - DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENT)

This is one of the best pop-punk CD's ever released. The songwriting is great, vocals are tremendous, and the production is mostly flawless. Kind of like Allister, Treble Charger, and Lit mixed together. If you like Starting Line, Allister, Sum 41, sr-71, Lit, MxPx, etc. you owe it to yourself to buy this disc. When I play this in my car, all the girls ask me "who is this? they are really good." If the band reads this PLEASE record a follow-up!!!!!

I bought Lucky 7 only by listening to a couple of the samples and reading reviews. I definitely have not regretted my decision at all. "California Girl" is the obvious single, but I also really like the song "Runaway". This CD might take a few run-throughs to really grow on you, but give it a chance and you WILL NOT be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Rockin' Zydeco from NYC.......2002-08-10

After a wild and successful ride through the East Coast's club scene, this dedicated and rockin quintet breaks through with their most accessible album to date. This doesn't mean One Way Track is their best, by any means. Throw together former Mink Deville players Kenny Margolis on accordion and Boris "Bobby" Kinberg on percussion with the Rock Cats' Barry "B.B." Ryan on Guitar- add the great rhythm section of Joe "Legs" Geary and Joe "Dio" D'Astolfo, and you've got one of the greatest bands to play clubs like Lupo's, The Lone Star Cafe, and other acclaimed East Coast clubs for over two decades!Check out "Get Lucky", "Feed the Snake" and their debut on vinyl, "Lucky 7" for a taste of NYC's finest. From classic covers by Clifton Chenier to Doug Sahm, these guys second to no one for great rocking blues and zydeco with a NY twist. They played my wedding in 1990-and people still talk about them!!
