On their self-titled sixth album, Leftover Salmon strip away the more eclectic elements of their "polyethnic Cajun slamgrass" and come up with a simpler but soulful sound rooted in both bluegrass and the blues. Drew Emmitt's vocals on songs like "Down in the Hollow" and "Weary Traveler" have a genuine high, lonesome twang that wouldn't sound out of place in a traditional bluegrass band, while his sound on bluesier numbers like "Last Days of Autumn" has an engaging laid-back feel. But even though the group is performing more traditionally structured songs instead of loosely organized jams, there are still plenty of opportunities for the group to exhibit the instrumental virtuosity that has made them favorites on the jam-band circuit. Newcomer Noam Pikelny is a blazing banjo picker in the Béla Fleck mode, and every time he breaks into a solo the energy level kicks up a notch. Leftover Salmon's new take on traditional styles has more than enough imagination to keep fans of the band's older, more freewheeling style happy, even as the more disciplined performances attract new ones into the fold. --Michael John Simmons

Like a modern-day Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Leftover Salmon are here to bridge the gap between hippie rock and traditional country and bluegrass. So it may help to think of The Nashville Sessions as a poor man's Will the Circle Be Unbroken, especially with Circle veterans Jeff Hanna and Randy Scruggs (who produced this record) along for the ride. Leftover invite bluegrass and newgrass heroes and jam-band buddies to contribute here, and the results are as mixed as the musical influences. Clearly, Leftover thrive on the exuberant stomps and chuckles, as on their original "Dance on Your Head" and John Hartford's "Up on the Hill Where We Do the Boogie." Both Lucinda Williams (on the Cajun-flavored romp "Lines Around Your Eyes") and Taj Mahal (on the gentle "Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes") lead the band through worthy interpretations of their own songs, while Widespread Panic's John Bell helps turn "Nobody's Fault but Mine" into a sleepy, slow-burning gem. Yet earnestness simply does not become this band, and too many cuts have a poppy sincerity (remember the Dirt Band analogy) that plays away from Salmon's strengths. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!!.......2005-10-12

I bought this CD a couple months ago, mainly because of the SUPER version of "Lovin' In My Baby's Eyes" on it. Even now, the CD stays in my car's player much more than any other. Reminds me of a "Greatest Hits" type album -- all top notch songs. Leftover Salmon is a fantastic group, & the talent on these tracks is amazing! All the artists blend together like they were made for each other. "Breakin Thru" is as good as any song I know. If you are looking to buy a very entertaining album, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars For all ears!.......2003-06-10

The great quality of Leftover Salmon is that they are a fusion of disciplines. Of course, at their roots, it's bluegrass that comes through, but with each listen, an atuned ear will pick up a bounty of sounds that come from other musical genres, such as rock and cuban salsa, among others. People who buy this CD will wear it out - it's that good. -Bc

4 out of 5 stars They could've called this album "Legends".......2000-12-21

Easily, the most satisfying studio effort by the Salmon boys and their unique "polyethnic cajun slamgrass." And depending on what they do with their next album, may also be the last one with Q-258 on drums and Tye on bass (an unbelievable rhythm section). So many great pairings on this disc, some of which are fantastic, others are just so-so. Listen to "Midnight Blue" with Del and Ronnie McCoury (and Drew a-singin') and you will be in mandolin heaven. "Lovin..." with Taj Majal is great, check out Taj as he leads the boys through the intro. "Five Alive" with Earl and Randy Scruggs, and "Nobody's Fault But Mine" with Widespread Panic's John Bell are my two favorites. And you can never forget Bela. But...the Lucinda Williams track, and the John Cowan tracks don't do much for me. Also, while the disc is a real good listen, it lacks the true cohesion that makes a great disc, but maybe that was the point ...to show the band's range while performing with legends of bluegrass and country. Still, to get a feeling for Leftover Salmon you need to see them live or check out their live album "Ask the Fish", their best album to date. But if you're looking for a studio album, this may be the one to go for.

5 out of 5 stars Caution: Only for people who know about real music!.......2000-03-28

I saw Salmon last month for the first time without knowing anything about the band. They knocked my socks off! I bought this CD not knowing which one to buy and now it is one of my all time favorites. This CD crosses so many musical spectrums that it is almost dizzying listening to it straight through. But all the songs have one thing in common... they are all super-intense and totally jam (especially track 12). I highly recommend this CD to anyone who considers themselves a fan of music!

5 out of 5 stars You WILL enjoy this album!.......2000-02-26

I'm disappointed in you as a human being if you do not stop what you're doing and buy this album immediately. Ah! No argument! GO! NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass at its best.......2001-06-06

Several of my favorite albums that were out of print for a while are finally back in print, including this gem from one of the most eclectic bands around. They refer to their music as "polyethnic cajun slamgrass," and you will know why when you here their music, which blends just about every western music form in a jam rock format. As a jam band, they are at least on par with Widespread Panic, but are more creative. Once you hear their version of Memphis Minnie's "When the Levee Breaks," you will be an instant fan. A far cry from the Led Zeppelin cover, they turn it into a reggae/blues/bluegrass jam that will leave you with your jaw on the floor. Further listening: Widespread Panic's "Light Fuse, Get Away"-- best live blues/southern rock jams since the Allman Brothers. Jerry Douglas's "Restless on the Farm"-- bluegrass, blues, rock, middle-eastern, and everything in between. Actually, try everything Jerry Douglas has ever recorded. The Tony Furtado Band's self titled release-- bluegrass, blues, celtic, jazz, rock, all done with an improvisational spirit by some of the best musicians around. Sonny Landreth's "Levee Town"-- blues, rock, cajun and country by one of the most inventive slide guitarists around. J.J. Cale's "Naturally"-- just plain great songs from the guy Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, and everyone else wanted to be.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Band To Listen To - Especially Live!.......2000-07-03

This is an excellent album for all music fans. There are so many music styles the "slamgrass" band Leftover Salmon covers on this album. Rock, bluegrass, country, and even the latin flavored first track "Carnival Time". Songs like "Reuben's Train", "Come On Home", and "Rocky Road Blues" make you want to get up and dance. Their cover of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" is a totally different twist to the original tune. Highlights on this album include the laid back "Bend In the River", the upbeat "Jokester", and the catchy "Stay Away Monday". If you're a fan of good and fun music, pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars Wham, slam, thank you Salm........2000-03-22

Never heard of them before. Took a chance on this CD. When it ended (after my first listening) I gave it a standing ovation! Unbelievable! High energy, top-shelf musicians having a great time! As a matter of fact, I just ordered four tickets to a show in Chicago (450 miles away). Luckily, they added a third show when the first two sold out. This CD has instantly become a life-changing event! Absolute satisfaction guarateed, assuming you have a pulse.

Believe it or not, my dad of all people tuned me into LoS. He described them as the best live band he had ever heard. I couldn't agree more. "Ask the Fish" brings that live experience to life. If you have the chance, be sure to see a Leftover Salmon show. If not, this album gives you the next best thing! Maybe I'll see you in Athens on March 4th for their show at the Georgia Theater. Some groups do their best work in the studio, meticulously overdubbing tracks to create the illusion of a cohesive sound. On Live, a collection of songs recorded at various concerts in 2001, the jam band Leftover Salmon conclusively demonstrate that they are not one of those bands. When guitarist-mandolin player Drew Emmitt starts trading licks with banjo player Mark Vann and keyboardist Bill McKay, supported by the polyrhythmic drumming of Jose Martinez and the low-down, funky bass of Greg Garrison, LOS let you know that the stage is their true home and improvisation their native tongue. The band calls its sound "polyethnic Cajun slamgrass," a term that aptly describes the complexity of tunes like the Celtic-tinged "Dark Green Thing" and the super-charged bluegrass of John Hartford's "Steam Powered Aereo Plane." Sadly, Mark Vann passed away on March 4, 2002, and the band has dedicated this recording to him. It would be difficult to imagine a more fitting tribute to his adventurous musical spirit than this collection of recordings. --Michael Simmons

3 out of 5 stars A band in transition.......2002-11-21

Leftover Salmon's latest release "Live" (rhymes with Give) is their 2nd major live release and 5th album overall (not counting the more heard about than actually heard "Taper's Reel"). While some of their past albums really showcased their diverse self-billed Cajun polyethnic slamgrass sound, this one pretty much stays in the same place. In fact it's hard to point to specific songs, because much of the album feels flat. The boys do hit a few high points, most notably "Dark Green Thing", which is way spacey and reaches some deep places over its 11+ minutes. Emmitt also throws down some sweet bluegrass on "Get Me Outta This City". But the keyboard driven "Railroad Highway" is just dreadful. Overall, they can't seem to kick it into high gear, in the way we've come to know and love 'em for.

The band has definitely seen significant changes over time, most notably with the passing of their incredible banjo player and long time member Mark Vann (who does play on this album). But the band has also shifted around drummers as often as Spinal Tap, including Jeff Sipe (one of the best!). And along with Sipe's departure, Tye North, their bassist since the early/mid 90's, also parted company with the band; leaving only Vince Herman and the great multi-instrumentalist Drew Emmitt at the helm.

In fairness, "Live" is documenting a band in a transitional phase, and that's a tough sell for anything more than the die-hard fan. The new guys are competent, though the reintroduction of keyboards into their sound is a misstep. But it's just that the bluegrass feels a little less raucous, and the Cajun tunes, a little less fun. I saw them live recently, and things have not gotten better since the loss of Vann. I really loved these guys back in the day, but if you want to know what's happened to their sound, ask the fish.

4 out of 5 stars Live it up.......2002-05-11

Great fun. But what else would you expect from LOS.This cd was dedicated to Mark Vann, Salmon's ultra talented banjo player who past away this year after a battle with cancer. His playing really makes the disc shine, which I beleive was the intention of the remaining members. The sound quality is above average, but at some points the mix is just a bit off.But every tune is as enjoyable as the next.

1 out of 5 stars Be Careful!.......2007-06-11

There is no music on my CD. There's 8MB of LoS.exe, but it won't play on my CD player. Perhaps a computer guru can figure it out, but I only wanted to listen to the music. So, be careful when considering to buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is - their best studio release!.......2005-07-10

LoS has always been right up front about this release - the fact is that it was HEAVILY influenced by both the death of their beloved founding member and close personal friend Mark Vann and the talents of the new members.

The band freely admits that this album doesn't have nearly as much of the "hippie yee haw factor" as prior releases, but that's to be expected with an effort like this - clearly dealing with the grief involved in losing Vann. One can imagine that the making of this album served as a catharsis for the band members.

If you're looking for a LoS cd to play for your next party in a field, pick any of their others - they're great for that! But it's just not what this one is about.

It's plenty passionate, it's just that the passion is fueled by grief rather than "party!" And, that's ok. One result is that the lyrics are the most mature, reflective, honest and heartfelt that LoS has ever done - with vocal deliveries to match. The musicianship, as always with LoS, is top notch (IMHO, Bill McKay's addition on keys is a step forward for the band). As such, this is one excellent album! It's the best studio release LoS has done and stands shoulder to shoulder with the best studio albums by any band (especially in the jam band realm) in recent years. I'll suggest it's every bit as good and enjoyable a listen as "Dither" by moe., the ABB's "Hittin' The Note", SCI's "Outside Inside", Panic's "Ball" and Phish's "Undermind" - all of which are excellent in their own rights.

In a world where radio actually played good music, songs like "Woody Guthrie", "Delta Queen" and "Mountain Top" would've been hits.

For the reviewers who lament that this isn't as wild as the live SCI releases, I'll wholeheartedly agree. But comparing SCI's excellent "On the Road" series with a studio release by any band isn't a fair comparison. I will also counter by suggesting that SCI would kill to have made a studio album this good instead of the unimpressive "One Step Closer" (not to mention "Untying the Not"...sheesh!).

Of the hundreds of cds in my collection, this one is absolutely in my top 10. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Feat Flavor maskes Salmon Sizzle!.......2004-12-11

The self-titled record by the longtime newgrass-revisionists has a jug-band take on a 4/4 with the aid of some Feat-flavor and a full-size drum set. Produced by Little Feat keyboardist and founder Bill Payne, he guests on every track lending his knowledge and expertise with arrangement and keys. Ethereal piano interludes mingle aloof with youngster Noam Pickelny's low-tuned banjo to give the record some serious soul. The first studio album for Leftover Salmon in five years, it reflects aptly their upstream ambition. Payne centers the band to help them stay focused and achieve thier true potential as musicians. The record is a highly-polished studio album that illustrates Leftover Salmon's fresh perspective of communal Rock & Roll. To the people will immediately question the record for not being the band's first album or a rare bootleg from a field somewhere; listen hard, this one is for you. 4 out of 5 stars Great musicians, at home with practically any type of music.......2004-08-09

From my nwbluegrass reviewing friend, Mark Gensman:

Leftover Salmon is a band that has been around a while and has spent a huge amount of time touring and playing at such diverse venues as bluegrass festivals, folk festivals and rock and roll venues..and from the quality and variety of playing on this CD, it is easy to see how they can be successful anywhere they chose to play.

The band is a six piece group and there are only two guest artists on the CD. Bill Payne from the group Little Feat is the producer and sits in on piano and K.C. Groves adds harmony vocals to one tune. Other than that, the band plays all the parts and they are great players for sure.

The members are:
Drew Emmitt - Mandolin, fiddle, guitar, lead and harmony vocals
Greg Garrison - Acoustic and electric bass, lead and harmony vocals
Vince Herman - Acoustic guitar, lead and harmony vocals
Jose Martinez - Drums and percussion
Bill McKay - Keyboards and vocals
Noam Pikelny - Banjo, acoustic guitar

First my only critical comments. I cannot understand how the packaging was allowed to be released to the public. The CD booklet is eight pages of nearly unreadable text. I had to get a magnifying glass to read some information and even then, I had the press release to correct what I thought was printed. Fonts that appear to be size six or less make the printing nearly unreadable.

The names of the songs are in a script that requires a major effort to discern and again, without the press release, I would not have known the proper name for one song because the script was simply unreadable.

But all is forgiven when the music starts. These guys are great musicians, obviously at home with practically any type and style of music and seem to have a great sense of the "assembly" on a song since they are all crafted with great care.

Down In The Hollow - The only tune I would suggest is related to bluegrass at all, but it is a great tune..with one exception. I thought the liead singer (Drew Emmitt) was singing in a foreign language until I grabbed my magnifying glass and read the words. Very hard to understand, but a great
bluegrass feel to the tune.

Mountain Top - A great Cajun feel romp with subdued drums and some really nice keyboard work.

Delta Queen - A great blues tune. Reminded me of some of the tastier Super Tramp blues songs. Piano, electric bass, drums, electric guitar, and a very nicely done blues.

Lincoln At Nevada - Acoustic instrumental with some great chops. Drums, piano, electric bass, etc. and just a nice feel

Woody Guthrie - Medium ballad with good acoustic instrumental backup. The drums are tasty and there are great banjo and mandolin breaks.

Fayettevill Line - Based around a low tuned banjo with really nice drums mixed way back and nicely done.

Everything Is Round - Pretty much a nice Cajun rock and roll tune with a great acoustic bass part.

Whispering Waters - A really neat combination of a bluegrass feel with a rolling banjo that kicks along and then has a nice laid back center part with great organ and piano playing. A very nice song.

Last Days Of Autumn - An all electric medium tempo blues tune. Again, these guys show that they are capable of playing comfortably with just about any style.

Just Keep Walking - This is a straight ahead good old funky rock and roll tune. Very nicely done and I kept looking for the horn section to come in which would have made it a great cover of an old Bill Champlin recording. Full tilt rock. Drums, electric distorted guitars..a good showcase for the band's rock and roll fans.

Weary Traveler - Very nice easy tune with nice acoustic guitar and mandolin. Again, the drums are subdued and the piano fits very nicely.

And the ending.. There is forty some seconds of silence after the last cut and then a snippet of Wildwood Flower that sounds like the Ventures in an echo chamber.. Very strange.

Musically the CD rates a 4. Again, the major complaint is the nearly unreadable package it comes
in..other than that, I like this band a lot and it would be interesting to hear what they play at a bluegrass festival.
(Mark Gensman, Ground Zero Sound)

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.........2004-05-29

I wholly agree w/Deadhead's assessment. I've been a fan of LOS since I first saw them play the cramped Ballard Firehouse in Seattle in 94. I've gone to see them whenever they've come to Seattle since 94, and my enthusiasm for this uniquely talented band has slowly waned as they've continued to move away from the high-energy wholly unique jam music which had made them a must see. Each successive album is more bluegrass than the one before - no doubt the influence of Drew E. who is an obvious a fan of the pickin' and grinnin'. It is severely disappointing to see they've abandoned their roots as a jam band in favor of bluegrass obscurity.

Nothing against bluegrass, but this is like having to listen to Jimmy Hendrix play country-western.

I too believe it is time to wave bye-bye to the glorious LOS jam band of the past..Bluegrass'ers enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars The Only Consistency is that it's a Joy All the Way Through.......2004-02-17

The notion that this band somehow manages to seamlessly interweave cajun music and bluegrass into accessible popish music is a bit farfetched. Instead, the idea behind "polyethnic cajun slamgrass" seems to be just an excuse to play any and all kinds of music on the album.

Leftover Salmon's second major label album doesn't have even one ounce of consistency with regard to the styles of music in each track; however, what bleeds through each track is the band's love of their music, whatever music they happen to be playing at the moment. That joy is totally infectious and I can't imagine trying to get through this album without the desire to crack a smile and move your feet.

Admittedly, the album get's off to a pretty poor start, "Better" is presicely the kind of bland, generic jam-band studio track that the band seems to be all about not being at all about. "Highway Song" is a little better, and the band begins to show the listener how it can combine bluegrass and pop rock together.

The band oscilates a little between a cajun/calypso sound and a more country-oriented bluegrass sound on the different tracks. "Funky Mountain Fogdown" and "Ain't Gonna Work" are pretty nice platforms for the band's virtuosic instramental abilities.

The whole album truly peaks and comes together on it's final track, "Euphoria". The song doesn't really fit with any one particular musical style. However, if "Happy" were a musical style, this would be one of its archetypal songs. It's simply a joy to hear and sing along with.

Personally, I think this is definitely Leftover Salmon's best album and certainly the first to pick up. Every track isn't a standout, but it makes for a really entertaining listen.

2 out of 5 stars trying too hard to please.......2001-02-23

This band wants too much to be all things. There are numerous other jam bands & newgrass bands who do a much better job at breaking down barriers between musical genres. The musicianship, while good, pales by comparison to some of the true giants in the field. At the risk of being cruel, suffice to say that there are no Bela Flecks, David Grismans or Tony Rices in this lineup. Neither do the vocals compare with a John Cowan. While they want to take on different styles, the rhythm section lacks the flexibility of, say, that of String Cheeese Incident, which can move fluidly from salsa to jazz to bluegrass & never miss a beat (literally & figuratively). As a long time newgrass fan, I looked forward to this much ballyhooed disk with some anticipation. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A quantum leap in quality. Salmon joins the bigtime........1999-12-26

OK, Bridges to Bert was fun. But it just didn't quite click with me. I gave it 4 stars out of niceness. I guess it was a letdown after Ask the Fish. Euphoria is a euphoric album whose only shortcoming is its shortish (42 minutes) duration. C'mon, guys, you could have jammed something out, done another Zep cover, or something. Despite its relative brevity, this is a cohesive effort and well worth owning. I hope Salmon keep true to their roots as a polythethnicslammgrass (or whatever they call it) band, because they've got the right formula for me. It's time for a double live CD! String Cheese Incident has the phenomenal live Carnival '99 coming out in February 2000, but I was lucky and got an advance copy. Salmon, it's time for you guys to do a double live, too. Jam some of these tunes out for us! Nashville Sessions was a treat, but a second live album is long overdue... Meanwhile, Euphoria still glows...

Before Drew Emmitt began playing "polyethnic Cajun slamgrass" with Leftover Salmon in 1990, he was the lead singer and mandolin player for the Colorado-based progressive bluegrass group the Left Hand String Band. On his solo debut, Freedom Ride, Emmitt revisits the bluegrass of his pre-Salmon days and gets a chance to play with some of the musicians that inspired him to take up the mandolin all those years ago. The guest artists include Peter Rowan, Randy Scruggs, legendary fiddler Vassar Clements, and former New Grass Revival members Sam Bush and John Cowan, whose own John Cowan Band supplies the accompaniment. Most of the songs are Emmitt originals, which he salts with a handful of cannily chosen covers like J.J. Cale's "If You're Ever in Oklahoma" and Bob Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue," which Emmitt recasts as a bluegrass breakdown complete with twin fiddle lead breaks and banjo solos. Freedom Ride is not as eclectic as Emmitt's work with Leftover Salmon, but the focus and intensity of the performances more than make up for the lack of extended jams. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Strong solo debut; a great listen!.......2005-02-01

In 2002 the outlook for the now-on-hiatus Leftover Salmon seemed uncertain; however its co-founder, the great multi-instrumentalist Drew Emmitt (backed by the John Cowan Band), put out this wonderful album, Freedom Ride, in the wake of Salmon's unknown future. I immediately liked this album, and over time have started to really appreciate the subtleties that lie in its tight arrangements and mostly mid-tempo tunes; of course the title track and cover of J.J. Cale's "If You're Ever in Oklahoma" are total upbeat barnburners! Standout numbers also include "Valley of the Full Moon" and the traditional "Memories of Mother and Dad," on which they nail down a real old-timey sound. And there is a lot more to like on this album, including the familiar "Bend in the River," "Lonesome Road," and "Tangled Up in Blue" (all great), as well as a slew of guest performances from luminaries such as Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, Randy Scruggs and Vince Herman. After recently catching a stunning live performance by the Drew Emmitt Band (with guitarist Ross Martin, bassist Greg Garrison, and the awesome Matt Flinner on banjo), whether or not Leftover Salmon has run its course, Drew Emmitt shows no sign of slowing down. Hopefully, his new quartet heads into the studio soon to cut some new tracks and potentially show off the jams and frenetic instrumentation that we have all come to love!

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Bluegrass.......2002-06-10

Drew's album comes along at a time when bluegrass is hot again in the aftermath of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". It's got some great original tunes, along with some pretty unusual covers (you'll never hear Dylan's "Tangled up in Blue" the same again). "Bend in the River, an Emmitt original, is a ripping Cajun romp, while "Lonesome Road" (another Emmitt original) is destined to become a new bluegrass classic.
Emmitt's mandolin chops run throughout the album, while guest appearance by some of the greatest names in contemporary bluegrass fill out the playing and the vocals. Buy it - you'll love it.

The idea of taking rock or pop songs and spinning them into bluegrass rave-ups isn't a new one. Traditionalists such as Del McCoury have been doing it for years, and more recently jokesters Hayseed Dixie have turned it into a quickly predictable career, covering AC/DC , Kiss, and Aerosmith. Despite the title, O Cracker, Where Art Thou? is not simply a well-worn gag. Dave Lowery and Johnny Hickman have teamed with the Colorado jam band Leftover Salmon to re-imagine 10 Cracker songs, and the results are surprisingly effective. Clearly, the guys in Leftover Salmon are great musicians, and any temptation toward improvisational excess is held in check by a respect for the songs, which span Cracker's career. Wisely, this includes a four-song cluster from the band's best album, Kerosene Hat, including a sexy "Sweet Potato," which effortlessly melds bluegrass pickin' with New Orleans rhythm, and a version of "Low" haunted by creepy banjo, pedal steel-guitar, and a Hammond organ solo. Lowery's former band, Camper Van Beethoven, experimented with this sort of musical hybrid, too, with greater abandon but less instrumental expertise. There's no way that CVB could have pulled off the double-time banjo and mandolin fretwork required in a satisfyingly traditional run-through of "Teen Angst,"" or even made it through a simple country lament like "Mr. Wrong" without smirking a little too broadly. Fans of Camper Van will probably miss that band's punky attitude--which only surfaces once, on the smashed country waltz of "Eurotrash Girl"--but these 10 songs are good enough to be twisted into new shapes without betraying the old ones. --Keith Moerer

4 out of 5 stars Categorizing the impact.......2004-05-24

Some people are just lucky. If you're a fan of both Leftover Salmon AND Cracker (like me), you can count yourself among the lucky ones. In "O Cracker, Where Art Thou?" you are getting an amazing melding of each band's strengths. The glories of Cracker lyrics combined with the instrumental musicality of Leftover Salmon will astound you. Although "Get Off This" provides a somewhat dismal context (Cracker at a county fair... on quaaludes), by the time "Sweet Potato" comes around the LoS stringers are in full sound. "Mr Wrong" exploits a twangy-country sound with excellent, syncopated keyboards courtesy of Bill McKay. "Teen Agnst" is also awesome with its newly-upbeat rhythms (think bango guy gone wild!).

But how will the respective fans of Leftover Salmon or Cracker like this CD? I think back to the old Reese's commercials: "Your chocolate is in my peanut butter!" "No, your peanut butter is in my chocolate!" Will fans of each taste enjoy finding them together? Here's what I think...

Fans who love Cracker especially for their lyrics will enjoy hearing the songs in a new context. But fans who love Cracker for their harddriving rock would best avoid this CD. It won't be your bag.

Similarly, Leftover Salmon fans who enjoy the purity and experimentation of traditional bluegrass could avoid this CD. But syncretists who enjoy the smashing success of melding musical styles will be well served.

Truly, like Reese's peanut butter cups, we've got "two great tastes that taste great together." I love it, and if you're open to Cracker music in this bluegrass context, you're in for quite a sweet treat!

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the originals.......2004-01-26

I have no idea where the concept for this CD came from, but it's inspired. I'm a Lowery fan from way back, and I can't even imagine how many times I must have listened to Kerosene Hat. And I haven't heard a lot of Leftover Salmon, but I've really liked what I've heard. Put them together, and you get this classic album. Yeah, it could be longer, but so what? The point is that what's here is terrific. The version of "Mr. Wrong" is far better than the original -- Lowery renders it more as wry this time, instead of as a wisecrack -- and hearing "Eurotrash Girl" turned into a country waltz is priceless. "Sweet Potato" and "Lonesome Johnny Blues" are so perfect for this arrangement that the instrumentation sounds more natural for the songs than the originals. The instrumental work totally reinvents "Teen Angst." Overall, if you're not familiar with Cracker, the strong songwriting and the brilliant instrumental work by Leftover Salmon should convert you. If you are a Cracker fan, this album has to be a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking.......2003-05-24

A few years ago I was playing banjo along with Cracker's Golden Age and realized how great this band would sound with a banjo. I suggested it on their web site and I'm sure it was lost among the hundreds of other posts. I had to wonder if the musicians even read their own web sites fan postings when they are so filled with idle chatter (mine excepted, of course).

This album goes beyond my expectations. The current "bluegrass players" (many of whom used to play bluegrass and now have gone onto other things using those instruments) have really succeeded in reviving that genre of music (with some help from NPR that has been using it in fills between news for years). There are those that maintain the tradition faithfully like Ricky Skaggs and those like Bela Fleck that are taking it toward jazz and world music. And then a bunch of others doing stuff in between like String Cheese Incident. But none of this has really done it for me. Either the musical gymnastics are self-indulgent but to complex to listen to unless you get off on keeping track of shifts between time signatures or the songwriting is so weak that you'd rather go back and put on some Stanley Brothers or Bill Monroe and hear the real thing.

Bob Dylan in his last few albums has made many references to American roots and blues music - both instrumentally and lyrically and they've been excellent records. Cracker has now helped define the musical Zeitgeist with this recording.

I don't know if this disk is a gag or was seriously considered but following on the heels of "Forever" which I found to be ponderous and turgid this is refreshing to say the least.

The best cuts, in my opinion, are the ones that are the most acoustic/bluegrass sounding: Teen Angst with its blazing banjo and mandolin, How Can I live Without You, Sweet Potato has a really nice "unplugged" sound with string bass I think. Lonesome Johnny Blues, which never struck me as anything more than filler in its old incarnation, now works nicely with the banjo rolls. The piano playing throughout is excellent (reminds me of the sound that Bill Payne added to Little Feat). Also some great electric slide guitar solos.

The downside:
I think the least successful are their hits: "Low" and "Eurotrash Girl" because they pretty much sound like they always do.

Not enough cuts. Only 10 songs. Theres 80 mins of music that fits on a disk. Fill 'er up!

I'm hoping Cracker takes this on tour or hires some new players who can do this stuff. More albums like this please and thank you David Lowery for doing this!!! This is one direction that I think rock and roll needs to go if its going to survive with any vitality.

Camper Vann Banjo where art thou?
Two days off the road in the studio, a fantastic band and the well crafted and always clever pop tunes from the mind of D.Lowery - what could be better? Another order?

If you like either, neither, or both, you dig this jem!

4 out of 5 stars A fine album by the creators of polyethnic cajun slamgrass.......2001-06-06

This is vintage Leftover Salmon-- and it's a good thing it is back in print. If you don't know by now, LoS is a jam band that performs a unique blend of cajun, bluegrass, blues, rock, reggae, and several other styles that are so smoothly integrated that you might forget just how original their sound is. This album just makes you feel good. "Ask the Fish" and "The Nashville Sessions" are probably better albums which have a more improvisational feel to them, but this is a fine piece of work, and well worth owning. Further listening: the complete works of Jerry Douglas-- the bluegrass dobro master who knows no musical boundaries. Anders Osborne's "Which Way to Here"-- a brilliant blend of blues, rock, and New Orleans R&B. Like this album, it just makes you feel good. David Lindley's "Win This Record"-- rock, blues, reggae and some of the meanest slide guitar you've ever heard. Alvin Youngblood Hart's "Territory"-- a blues musician breaking down barriers. Listen with an open mind.

Give me that cheese! I can undoubtedly state that the Salmon boys have GREATLY improved since the making of this album many years ago, but the album does have some great songs on it rarely performed live by the boys any longer. One should buy this album just to hear "Just before the Evening", a beautiful Drew ballad I've never heard live and probably never will. I highly recommend the album if you already love those Salmon boys, but would not recommend it as a first album. "Ask the Fish" is a better representation of the whole LOS experience.
