At a time when popular music has been micro-marketed to the far side of ad nauseam, Declan MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello, has traded on his reputation as the brightest songwriter to emerge from the new wave era to foster any number of delightful, cross-genre/generation musical surprises, including soundtracks and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, jazz artist Roy Nathanson, and songwriting legend Burt Bacharach. The latest fruit of that generous, insatiably curious artistic spirit is this elegant partnership with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. Though an admitted pop novice, Otter couldn't have picked a better confederate than Costello, an artist whose taste in songs has seldom been tainted by trend.Together, they weave material from disparate sources--including a slate of compelling Costello material, a pair of Brian Wilson's evocative "Pet Sounds" confessionals, a Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (oddly, though effectively, coupled in medley with McCartney's "Junk"), an Abba song, and the Beatles' "For No One"--into a musical tapestry of stately power and grace. Costello sparingly uses his voice as seasoning throughout, though his masterful touch is everywhere. Otter's novice pop singing reveals an easy knack for jazz phrasing that should tempt further explorations and a warmth that belies the rigidity that's so often a byproduct of classical training. Most gratifying of all, this album ultimately achieves what's become one of the loftiest plateaus in Pop music: common ground. --Jerry McCulley

Costello Partners with Hubris and Yields Variable Results.......2005-05-08
Take, for example, her rendition of Brian Wilson's "Don't Ask (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" from the legendary "Pet Sounds" album. It moves so glacially that it actually extricates the romantic subtext almost surgically. The same can be said for Jessie Mae Robinson's "The Other Woman", which has at least Magnus Persson's vibraphone to provide relief from the tedium. She's better on the other "Pet Sounds" classic, "You Still Believe in Me", where she cannily soars with the chorus, though Costello damages it by adding some odd, muffled rapping in the background. Ironically, it is on the Costello compositions where the recording most noticeably flails. The opener "No Wonder" starts as a "Greensleeves"-like madrigal and then turns into Beatlesque pop; "Baby Plays Around" seems to suffer from exhaustion by all parties; the two Fleshquartet collaborations, "Rope" and "Just a Curio", sound somewhat like extraterrestrial hymns done in a series of minor keys; and the closing title track, "For the Stars" includes peppy, Beach Boys-sounding harmonies which escape her grasp. In fact, "Just a Curio" would have been a more appropriate title for this entire recording.
On the other hand, the Gallic flavor of Benny Andersson's accordion effectively informs her rendition of Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycles", which melds perfectly with Costello's vocal on Paul McCartney's "Junk". Speaking of Andersson, a fellow Scandinavian, von Otter admirably covers a piano-led ABBA ballad, "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room". She also displays a meticulously casual bounce on Lennon-McCartney's "For No One", though it stops rather abruptly. Von Otter acquits herself surprisingly well on the jazzy "Shamed into Love", written by another unlikely duo, Costello and Rubén Blades, and performed as almost a smokier variation of Bacharach's "Alfie". And speaking of Bacharach, she does a nice turn on the lovely "This House Is Empty Now" from the 1998 Bacharach-Costello disc. Costello and von Otter are masters of their craft, but I think some of the collaborations reflect simply irreconcilable differences. While Costello seems to have an insatiable desire to expand musically, his hubris here appears to constrain the often preternatural vocal skill von Otter displays on the opera and recital stage. Consequently, what we have here is a nice album, a generous one with eighteen tracks, that doesn't seem to capitalize on either contributor's talent fully.
what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?.......2004-04-22
No life in her (pop) art.......2004-03-15
The big problem is that von Otter has not found a way to communicate any emotion in this scaled-down form of singing. All her classical techniques are stripped away, and there's nothing to replace them. Sure, her voice is gorgeous, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what the lyrical content. The songs could have been made up of nonsense syllables for all the emotional life she communicates.
Deeply disappointing - but someone, somewhere, will figure out how to bring classically trained singers to the wonderful pop song repertoire that has been composed over the past 50 years. Elvis may very well be the person to do it, but not on this album.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Who Saw This Coming??.......2007-04-14
I have the first two Continental Drifters CD's and noted and enjoyed Susan's contributions on those releases, and I knew she sang backup for Dwight Twilley back in the day, which is why I checked this one out. That didn't in any way prepare me for this, though. This is absolutely excellent and the best "roots pop" I've heard in years.
The four "Wiwoma" song fragments neatly split the album into three sections. The first "section" is damn near flawless, and if there was any justice would make Susan a star. The rockin and catchy "I Know You Know" should have been a monster radio hit, and lilting "Palm Of My Hand" would have made a great follow up, with its interesting melody and great background vocals.
The middle section is a slow trilogy that deals with mortality and the passage of time. "Nanny's Song" is simply the most devastating and tear inducing song about the fear of death that I have ever heard. The cover of "Who Know Where The Time Goes" is the album's first minor stumble. It fits thematically, but does not approach Sandy Denny's/Fairport Convention's definitive original version. (With the quality of the songwriting on this album, why bother with a cover?)
OK, this thing drags a little toward the end (or maybe those songs just haven't taken hold). But I would give this 5 stars based only on the first half of the album. It's that good. I love Susan's "no diva" voice and particularly the backing vocals that weave their way in and out of some of the songs are stunning.
I highly recommend this. Susan Cowsill should be a big star, and if she released this 20 years ago I believe she would be...unfortunately I fear the record companies have no idea how to market a mature middle aged woman's "debut".
And there are people who really care about the "American Idol" winners when there is stuff like this out there waiting to be discovered! Go figure.
What can I say?.......2006-05-17
Susan Cowsill Drives One Home.......2006-02-16
Susan Cowsill is one of those rare artists who can take events of her life and turn it into great songs without sounding self serving or preachy with "Nanny's Song" and "I Know you Know" being prime examples of this.
She blows away many other female artists in her vocal ability including Sheryl Crow. I tend to feel the tonality of her voice compares to Stevie Nicks without the things about Stevie Nicks's voice I never liked, with Susan's range and inflextion being superior.
It seems the songs on "Just Believe It" were gathered over a long time span which, in the case of this CD, helps garner the strength of the release as opposed to many who release a recording with seemingly nothing in particular to say. The range of emotions felt on "Just Believe It" covers the whole spectrum.
I rate this CD a Five out of Five.
A companion to this CD would be the Cowsills' excellent "Global" available privately from Robin Records.
wide-ranging, diffuse.......2006-01-08
Susan, it seems, stored a lot of songs away in her attic in preparation for this album... it really covers a lot of ground stylistically! At times it can seem very ambitious (it has a repeated theme running through it, like Willie Nelson's "Red-Headed Stranger") and at other times it can seem almost off the cuff. The album balances upbeat alt-country anthems like "Palm of My Hand" and "Just Believe It" against rather dreary imitations of Lucinda Williams territory, like "Talkin", and the albums lowpoint, "Crazy".
Cowsill is possessed of a good but unspectacular voice, which she can shade so it sounds at times like Williams, or Sheryl Crow, and there's even a touch of Karen Carpenter's poppiness.
She's better when she's upbeat. "I Know You Know" is a chip off the Breeders' block, with it's roaring ditzy guitars, and "Just Believe It" is an infectious country shuffle. "Nanny's Song" is memorable, but "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" is very ordinary compared with the majesty of Sandy Denny's original.
The bonus tracks--"Mr.Everything" and "Don't Worry Baby" outshine a few of the downtempo offerings.
If Cowsill had been a little more judicious, this could have been a five-star debut. Susan drove her brand new album all over the map... but it still has a lot of sparkle, and worthily stands up alongside other alt-country contenders like Kathleen Edwards.

"The String Quartet Tribute to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds" is an interesting, and ultimately, satisfying listen. Fantastic solo debut.......2005-10-07
references to Continental Drifters & even The Cowsills, and a bit of pop sheen compared to say, the Drifters. But okay with me. What I like too is the sense of 'hard won' optimism that is here overall, even if many of the songs are also ballsy and realistic. Her dramatic read of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is one of the greatest I think-- only Sandy Denny herself can compete, and she
sang it rather differently. I think Susan stakes out a significant solo place here-- roots
rock/folk/pop with heart.
