Editorial Reviews

This apparent camp classic came and went in 1982 without so much as one week on the Billboard charts. Cher fans who dig her late-'80s power-ballad phase might like I Paralyze, an early stab at the genre (never mind the cover's new wave styling). Silly love songs from the pens of Desmond Child, John Waite, and Jacques Morali are, um, highlights, as is the way Cher's vocal, er, prowess is buried deep in the title track's mix. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars One of Cher's sleeper albums.......2007-06-24

"I Paralyze" was a one-shot deal for Columbia Records in 1982. The album didn't sell and this was Cher's last album for five years. Released after her stint with Casablanca Records, where Cher had a career resurgence with the disco hit "Take Me Home" in 1979, this album combined the power pop influences heard in her "Prisoner" album with the slightly harder-rock edge from the "Black Rose" collaboration.

Charles Koppelman was the executive producer of this project; he also was involved in the "Take Me Home" recording. As strong as this program was, it failed to make a dent in the charts which is in some ways surprising, and then not so at all. This album was a victim of its timing. "I Paralyze" was released after the disco fad petered out and Cher had yet to prove herself as an actress. Around this time, she wasn't taken seriously at all as a singer or actress and was known more for tabloid copy. And what a loss for pop music. The album contains a great commercial single, "Rudy" (co-written with Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo, the brains behind the Village People) which is as good as any of Cher's smash hit records. "Games" and "I Paralyze" are strong commercial contenders, as is "Back on the Street Again" (co-written by John Waite).

There were five Cher albums that were commercial flops which contain some of her best work. The first was "Backstage" (1968), Cher's final album for Imperial Records. The second was her subsequent 1969 Atco release "3614 Jackson Highway." Third was "Stars," her 1975 Warner Brothers debut (and her most dramatic make-over artistically). Fourth was this album and fifth was the 1996 sleeper "It's A Man's World," which showed, more than any of these other albums, her versatility as a singer.

5 out of 5 stars Failure? Hell No!.......2006-02-23

I was looking online and saw that When Cher made this Cd It was one on the worst cd's she ever made! It was to be totally forgotten. Well There are only 3 songs on here that don't have a good beat but the rest of them are GREAT! If you are collecting Cher cd's this one needs to be in your collection!

3 out of 5 stars good but no classic.......2005-09-07

I had never heard of this album until i bought it. In the uk none of cher's material was released between 1974-1987 - unfortunately! However amongst cher's 70 treats and her diso period we also missed out on this album, maybe for the best? Its an OK album, although I do not think alot of time was spent on it to appeal to alot of people. There are some good songs including "When the love is gone", "games" and "I paralyze". Most of the album has cher type ballads, just not her best. This really was the very beginning of cher turning into a soft rock goddess, but this album seems more of a trial run that never got off the ground. It has grown on me but they arent her best.

5 out of 5 stars A riveting album!.......2005-08-26

As everybody knows, Cher has a stunning voice. This album is a great work and she sings like no one. It's an interesting album to people who don't know about Cher's romantic side. She's famous for dance songs such as Believe, Strong enough, Taxi taxi and many more, but on this CD you'll discover her deepest feelings. Don't miss it!.

5 out of 5 stars Cher: I Paralyze (1982).......2005-05-10

In 1980, after the release of TAKE ME HOME, Cher had decided to step away from music and decided to focus on her acting career. In 1967, Cher did star in two films: GOOD TIMES and CHASTITY. Both movies were not very successful. Cher furthered her career in 1980, by starring in the play version of COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN. After the play, Cher reprised her role from the play to star in the film adapted version of the same play.

In 1982, Cher came back to music to release her eighteenth album entitled, I PARALYZE. Cher did release four singles from this album, but the album failed to chart high on top. I still don't understand, to this day, why this album did not chart well. This album is my second favorite album, right behind HEART OF STONE, which was released seven years after this album. This album marks another image change for Cher. We last saw Cher take up the late 70s Disco look. Now, Cher has taken up the 80s Rock-Big Hair look. This album is amazing in every way and I will, indeed, explain why. I just hope all you readers that you take my advice and buy the album and listen to it for yourselves.

RUDY
The first single from the album. This is definitely an amazing song and I cannot help but play it at least two to three times in a row. She just basically talks to her ex-boyfriend, Rudy, about what he had done in their relationship. Great song.

GAMES
I kind of hoped this song would be great, but I did not come as close as I had hoped for. Don't get me wrong, I mean, this song is still very good, but it is not as good as I had hoped.

I PARALYZE
The second single from the album, as well as the album's title track. When I first heard the 30 second clip from Amazon.com last year, I was not too impressed, but this year, I decided to listen to it again and I am glad that I did because I find the song to be one of Cher's best. Cher did say that this is her favorite song out of them all, basically because it was not a hit. She said she would love to re-record it.

WHEN THE LOVE IS GONE
Why this song was not released as a single, I'll never know. This is a beautiful heart-felt ballad and I can listen to this song over and over again. Definitely one hell of a beautiful song and the start of Cher's power ballads.

SAY WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND
A great song that is good for the feet of many dancing fans.

BACK ON THE STREET AGAIN
When I heard the first five or six seconds of this song, I immediately thought that this song was going to be a winner and I was more than 100% right. This song just flat out rocks.

WALK WITH ME
The third single from the album. This was another really impressive song. This is a song I will forever enjoy.

THE BOOK OF LOVE
The Book Of Love. The Book Of Love. How many of us even follow the rules in The Book Of Love? Well, a good deal of us don't follow those rules. However, this is a great song and all of us should listen to this one to remind us that we should follow the rules of love.

DO I EVER CROSS YOUR MIND
The fourth & final single from the album. This must have been the start of the country-rock songs for Cher. This song is a very moving ballad, featuring a country-western sound, which Cher would later use in 1989 for "Just Like Jesse James".

When I heard this album all the way through, I was completely surprised and amazed at how great this album is. I am still pondering over the fact that this album did not do as well as it should have. Most people are too critical with most things, especially on albums that deserve more credit than they receive. This album is up there and it should have received more crediability than most people gave. If you are a Cher fan, you dare not skip over this album.
