4 out of 5 stars Very Good Album.......2006-09-20

I was walking about, a tourist on a summer Stockholm day near Gamla Stan in a shopping area in a record store when I first heard Kent. I immediately purchased five cd's by them. Of the one's I purchased, I find myself listening to Hagnesta Hill often.

If you like atmospheric, melancholic rock bands, Kent is very good. They remind me a lot of England's "House of Love" but they are very unique.

They have a very detached emotional vulnerability in their lyrics that is very beautiful to listen to because it reminds the listener that other's have felt the way. Lines like, the line from Stop Me June (Little Ego), "You Just have to let me go..." are poignant.

The pensive break-up song lyrics of Quiet Heart goes right to the point but with unusual and refreshingly creative lyrics. Listening to their lyrical expression is like listening to words used as a magic. You never know where the expression is going to take you. Like in quiet heart, "There was time when I was lost in myself, you took my hand became my guide; there was a time, you needed my help, I guess my ego made me blind..."

There's a confessional sort of guilt that any man can identify with in lyrics like this.

The King is Dead is very uplifting and expressive; Kevlar Soul reminds me of the later Beatles sound or even ELO.

But as a whole, there is a depth of emotion in their sound, melodies, and lyrics that makes them worth having in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration to all who listen........2006-06-22

I was first introduced to Kent through a friend of mine. The instant I heard the first song on Hagnesta Hill, "The King is Dead", I fell in love. There is something quite remarkable about their sound, and it is something that I have never heard before. It's so hard to place, but to put it simply, their music surpasses the bonds of mainstream music. Hagnesta Hill is far from singular-it is the most multidimentional album I've ever heard. Regardless of your mood, Kent is sure to fill whatever void you have. I find that the songs reflect life quite well, and do so in a mature and creative style. Overall, I can safely guarantee satisfaction to anyone who chooses to listen to Kent. The tone of their style grabs you in instantly, not to mention, the depth of their lyrics can keep you listening for hours.

4 out of 5 stars Nordic atmosphere.......2004-07-16

I'm not fully sure whether the non-Europeans are able to understand this review, especially when I mention the Nordic atmosphere which characterizes this album, Hagnesta Hill. The point is that you might not be aware of this so-called atmosphere.

It's the sound of this cd, especially songs like Kevlar Soul, Stay With Me and Quite Heart. Kent are from Sweden and you can hear that. The singer sings a bit "Swenglish". But that doesn't give the album an unattractive tinge.

This album reminds me of long winters, immeasurable forests and tundras covered with snow. Lots of songs have a melancholy sound, but others rock! The King Is Dead, Heavenly Junkies or Revolt III are filled with guitars!

Anyway, I play this album mostly in autumn and winter. It's the sound, the atmosphere. Just try it, I would say.

5 out of 5 stars must-have.......2004-03-10

It's better than Isola (which is tough) although in my opinion not quite as good as Vapen & Ammunition. If you aren't afraid to try somethign in Swedish, get the Swedish versions of Hagnesta Hill, Isola, and Vapen & Ammunition, you won't regret it. If you are afraid, don't miss out on the English versions of Isola and Hagnesta Hill, they will probably be the only English Kent albums ever, as they aren't recording in English anymore. As shame since they could easily be the best band of their type in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2003-11-07

I can't stop playing this cd. "Hagnesta Hill" along with "Isola" remain as catchy as ever. Both discs are 3 and 5 years old respectively. The melodies are mind blowing pop lust! I love this band. -ev

There was a time when guitar-driven pop and darkly atmospheric rock were the exclusive property of the English-speaking world. But Kent proves Sweden has been raising its own generation of guitar devotees. Following the trail blazed by the Cardigans and the Wannadies, Kent's fourth album (their second in English) melds R.E.M.-like soul searching with Smashing Pumpkins alt-rock snarl and elements of Radiohead at their most vulnerable and tormented. Singer Joakim Berg sounds like a direct descendant of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. But what makes the likes of "Kevlar Soul," "Heavenly Junkies," and "Stay With Me" so potent is Kent's appreciation of the power of good tunes, and Hagnesta Hill has more than its share of those. --Dan Gennoe

5 out of 5 stars One of their best.......2005-06-29

I have been listening to the english version of this cd for about a year now and finally got the swedish one today! Maybe it's because I'm so used to the songs in english, but they were just a tad hard for me to get into as much as the english ones. Don't misunderstand me though, I have NO problem listening to Kents music in swedish. In fact, Du & Jag Doden (their latest) has been in my cd player for months! Regardless of the adjustment period, I still love the music and am sure the swedish lyrics will grow on me.

I will say that Kevlarsjal (Kevlar Soul) is actually BETTER in swedish!

For anyone who isn't all that familiar to Kent, I suggest you go out and buy the english versions of this (Hagnesta Hill) and the earlier Isola. Listen to them and love them... eventually you will find yourself wanting everything Kent has ever released regardless of language!

1 out of 5 stars This is not good at all.......2004-05-09

I must say that I think it's amazing that this band have reached the USA. I thought it was enough that they were and still are so big here in Sweden, but now people that don't even unerstand what they're singing about listen to them too. And they like them!? Well I guess and hope that it's because of the fact that they don't understand the lyrics, otherwise I don't know what's wrong with the world. The reason to why I would feel better if they don't understand the lyrics is because they are so pretentious!

I think that Kent is one of the most overrated bands ever, and every time I hear Jocke Bergs awful voice it gives me a headache. I would have hoped that they were at least only famous in Sweden, and even though they're not as big in the US as other swedish bands such as The Hives, it's still very embarassing thet some people over there knows who they are.

To make my point about their pretentious lyrics I have taken an extract from their song Gravitation and translated it into english.

"Du fastnar perfekt på min polaroid, du blinkar förskräckt när jag ställer mig bredvid..."

"You stick perfectly on my polaroid, you blink terrified when I'm standing beside..."

If no one thinks this is really bad and pretentious he or she is just as fooled as about half of swedens population.

5 out of 5 stars KENT - Radiohead The Bends days.......2002-05-14

When I first heard about Kent I had heard that they sound like Radiohead during the Bends years. I think they can be compared to Radiohead but not using too many musical effects, just the rocking part. This particular album, I thought was a step up from that last one, Isola. I especially love that they have two versions of the album, Swedish or English! It reminds me of Japanese animation purists and how they complain about english dubs and how japanese with english subtitles are better! Now we get to see two kinds of Kent fans I guess....

I actually own both albums and enjoy listening to both. I really like that the Swedish album has an extra swedish track that is not in english on the english album. If you are a fan of Kent please pick this album up as well as Isola. If you are really feeling frisky pick up the imports. They are that good!

5 out of 5 stars Kent, Kent, Kent..........2001-12-31

I think I must confess that I'm a big fan of Kent,I have all records ( Isola and Hagnesta Hill, both in swedish an in english), so you know whhich side I'm on... This album is different from the previous album Isola, it sounds more like the earlier albums Kent and Verkligen (only in swedish, I'm afraid)... I think you can buy this record even if you may not understand swedish, I think they sound better in swedish... I can't think of any group to compare Kent to, they sound like nothing you've ever heard before...

5 out of 5 stars The king is dead..........2000-07-15

This is the second album in English from these Swedish rockers, and it's a more accomplished and lyrically adept an album than anything that has been released this year from a British band. Though I hold my tongue. Radiohead's 'KID A' hasn't come out yet.

The singer sounds like an interesting mix between Andreas Johnson, Fran Healy and Billy Corgan when he whispers. The phrasing of the lyrics is a little poor, however, and thus the singing sounds slow and a little lethargic. Think of Oasis's 'Girl in the Dirty Shirt.'

The tunes on an album are what counts, and gladly, Kent know how to pen a great melody... Music Non Stop is the catchiest thing ever to come from Sweden, and The King is Dead is an opener worthy of comparisons to Planet Telex.

Surprisingly good british music from a swedish band.

2 out of 5 stars not bad but nothing new.......2001-11-10

if you like Radiohead, you will love this album the first hour. But after several listening, I understood that this music sounds like Radiohead but it's really less innovative. So finally, I don't see the interest of this CD. Don't buy it...

    4 out of 5 stars Heavenly junkies.......2001-08-06

When reading reviews about Kent, they are often compared to groups like Radiohead and Muse. With all respect they are great but kent has, like alot of scandinavian bands created their own unique sound. Hagnesta Hill is a poetry floating over layers of guitars. Music non stop, as well as Heavenly junkie and just like money, is your typical first single and it works great main stream, but it's songs like revolution, rollercoasterkevlar soul and wistler song that goes straight to the heart. No one can say that kent is not a great band. Listen and love. It is a great follow up to their masterpiece "Isola"

5 out of 5 stars one of the greatest swedish albums ever.......2001-08-06

This record is just one of the absolutely best ones i've ever heard!!! It starts out with the amazing "the king is dead", then the short song "revolt III" which is sort of a punk song! the rest of the album is really soft and beautiful britpop and indie.the greatest songs of the album are: "kevlar soul", "the whistle song", "quiet heart" and "just like money" but everyone is really worth buying and litening to. i'm very much into britpop and also punk so if even if you dont buy this record i really think you ought to check these bands out cause they are absoulutely great, maybe not excactly the same style as Kent but anyway it's just really good music: Jeff Buckley (a must!!!!buy all his records now!!), the Clash, Ryan Adams,Dexys Midnight Runners,Ed Harcourt, the Strokes, Weezer, Turin Brakes, the Smiths and off course Morrissey. if you're in to swedish music i can recommend Yvonne, Håkan Hellström, the Hives, Titiyo and the Plan.

5 out of 5 stars Beaty from Kent.......2001-08-05

This cd is really great, i bought the swedish one ond i loved it, then i realised that this version has two more tracks (quiet hearts and just like money) so i had to buy this to, and i loved it.
