4 out of 5 stars Great treasure--Early Dylan at his Prime.......2006-11-26

I'm one of those listeners who gave up on Dylan after he went electric. Well, I did drift back with Nashville Skyline, but after that it was all work and no play for both Dylan and me. After seeing the excellent exhibit at the Morgan Library in New York City, I realized I just need more of that early Bob. (I did listen into the 1961 Carnegie Hall concert which they had at the show, and that's what really made me say, "You gotta find some of that early, wonderful, brilliant Bobby D.")
The other day I wandered into Starbucks in Charlottesville, and there was a pile of this particular recording, and I bought one for the long ride north. What a pleasure. So why give it only four stars? I've heard that wonderful recording from 1961 with the chatter between songs, and Dylan in such a great mood that he's having a good time. I had a great time listening to this milestone recording, but with the way songs were cut and edited, I only wished for more. Bootleggers of the world, thanks for saving music for future generations. Now, if we could only get legitimate companies to issue that music in the near perfect state that this performance has been issued.

5 out of 5 stars Set List.......2006-07-13

Some great reviews here. I guess some people may wonder what the original set list was. I've gotten it off the original tapes and some web sites. Some people claim that it was one long show. Some claim it was multiple nights. I wasn't born yet myself, but the order seems acurate by the recordings I've heard.
Dylan is one to constantly refine his work through live performance. So, it's always interesting when you get to hear a real early live show. This album is terrific.

Note: This is not the set list included on this Album. It is from the original show that the album was taken from.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-01-23

A great Dylan record from his folk days, when he sang his songs, and didn't talk or whine them. I picked this one up from Starbucks, and I love it! Having never heard the original Gaslight tapes, I don't know how complete this recording is, but I do know that all the songs fit very well. Every song is beautifully done, but there are a few that I feel are specifically worthy of mention by me, a Dylan novice.

"A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is spectacularly performed. The things in the background such as coughing, glasses clinking, and a car horn honking just add to the effect, and the haunting singing of the crowd gives me the chills. Plus, there is a line here that I wish he had included in the final song: "I heard the sound of one person who cried he was human." Beautiful.

"John Brown" also became one of my favorites. The back of the CD case says that tracks 4 through 10 are traditional, but it sounds like a Dylan one to me -- did he in fact write it? Either way, it is a deep and moving performance. I nearly cried when I heard it first.

And finally, Dylan's version of "Barbara Allen" is perhaps the best I've heard. Simon and Garfunkel did a light, up-beat version of this ancient folk tune, and it just didn't fit the piece. Dylan's adaptation, somewhat reminiscent (or rather, preminiscent) of the tune for "Boots of Spanish Leather," accurately captures the solemnity and hope of the song.

The album is full of amazing songs, and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars In response to Jack Priest's review..........2005-12-03

I too am a little disappointed that Sony, Dylan, Rosen, whoever decided to make this a truncated version of the Gaslight tapes which are indeed the very first bootleg CD I ever bought (not to mention having it on tapes and vinyl for years...). But it's a great batch of performances and it sounds great on this release. However, to set the record straight (and in reponse to Jack Priest's review here where he states: "Why they left off songs like "Black Cross", "No More Auction Block" and some very good others is beyond me, because it wouldn't have cost one lickin', stickin' cent more"), it DOES cost more to include more songs on an album. It doesn't cost more to manufacture it, true, but you have to pay publishers for every song on the album. And while many of the songs could be construed as Public Domain and thus not subject to royalties, in reality, somebody is usually able to lay claim to a song and demand royalties for it... Anyway, this is still a great album, and I think the fact that Sony & Dylan have been pretty generous about opening their vaults (and others) to release these kinds of albums is commendable.

4 out of 5 stars Live At the Gaslight.......2005-11-13

Some good, very very early Dylan, a mix of age-old songs (Barbara Allen, Cocaine, Handsome Molly) and new (for the time, anyway) Dylan material (Hard Rain, Don't Think Twice, Rocks And Gravel John Brown). This was way back in his protest period, so it's only natural that the two best performances (Hard Rain, John Brown) were both protest songs with very vivid imagery. I'd say the version of Hard Rain is better than even the studio original! Of course, I also like Don't Think Twice, though in this case perfer the classic original. The only weak song is Barbara Allen, it drags on way too long (even for Dylan) and the story is awful.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the avid fan of Son House................2006-09-19

Eddie James "Son" House was born in 1902 and was one of the earliest blues musicians in the 1920's playing with Charlie Patton and even serving as an early mentor to Robert Johnson until Johnson left town and "sold his soul to the devil" for his amazing skills.

It is amazing that with such a paucity of recordings, this Baptist bluesman's status could forever be forged in the annals of American music as legendary. Son House record a mere 7 Paramount sides in 1930, some field recordings by Alan Lomax in 1941 & 1942, and some sessions in 1965 after his "rediscovery." He put the guitar down around 1942 because, as he stated in an interview in the 1960's, all of his friends were dying, from Charlie Patton to Robert Johnson......he simply thought he would be next if he kept on playing. And so he put his guitar down for 20 plus years.

Outside of the three times he officially recorded in the field or in studio sessions, there is not a lot of material for the avid fan of Son House. Luckily for us, we have recordings such as "Live at the Gaslight in 1965." He may not have the white-hot intensity of the 1930 Paramount sessions, but the intensity is there nonetheless. And we are witness to a soft spoken Son House as he talks very softly between songs.......for me, this is what I enjoy the most even though the music is fantastic. He doesn't say much, but his soft spoken words contrast starkly with his singing and presence. Listening to this album is like finding a treasure, a treasure to be savored and enjoyed partly because it is a testament to one of the all time great names in the genre of the blues. And partly because sadly, there is simply a dearth of recordings by Son House. When the audience applauds in gentle claps, you get the distinct impression that they do not know how great the figure in front of them will ultimately prove to be.

Enjoy the songs on this album.....they were made by a master who to this very day is the epitome of delta blues.

    4 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Listen and Learn.......2004-03-03

Even if he hadn't influenced anyone, even if historically he was a 19 year old kid from Shirley, Long Island, even if this recording at just been waxed last night, this is good, essential blues listening, you won't want to stop listening, you wont stop seeing the scenes of the blues that the songs make, you won't stop swaying at the power and swing of his guitar playing and singing. On here, my song is Preachin the Blues. I know you will have yours.

Son House taught Robert Johnson the slide blues. Son House taught Muddy Waters. When Son House started performing at Blues festivals again in the mid 1960s, some of Muddy's younger band members would start to go off for a smoke or whatever when the old man came on stage. Muddy wouldn't let them. Muddy Waters would tell all his band members to be quiet and pay attention when the man played because even compared with Muddy, this was the real deal.

Rediscovered in Rochester, New York, relearning to play the guitar, (how this country abuses the masters that come from its people, particularly its Black people), put back on the stage by the folk revival's blues section, House made recordings that reproduced his old masterpies, with a wrier sense of meaning than before.

People outside of the blues life focus on the guitar playing or the rhythm of the singing, but where the power comes from is the feeling and the words that are put together, the life and the meaning of the blues. Son House in his youth and his old age, on this and his other sides, always gave it.

So Like Muddy Waters, I would like you to know that
Son House is the real deal.

Paul Roland has been variously described as the last English eccentric, a Twentieth Century troubadour and a romantic in the tradition of Poe, Lovecraft and M.R. James. His songs teem with characters, both grotesque and humorous, juxtaposed and set in music suitably atmospheric and evocative. Spanning the years 1980 to 1990 it encompasses some of his delightful songs and almost stories. 38 tracks including 1 bonus track, 'The Cars That Ate New York'. Last Call. 2003.

By far,the best place to start for the uninitiated, the best compilation of his work released,an essential purchase for die-hard fans....how can you lose?
It's a magic swirling trip thru a long and colorful history, meeting some equally colorful characters along the way(Walter the Occultist,Cousin Emilia,Morgan,Ophelia,Aleistair & even Nosferatu himself!)From the Barrett-esque Madeline & Puppet Master to early rockers like Dr Strange,Werewolf of London & Death or Glory...Sea shanties(The Sea Captain)...folk ballads(Ratcatcher's Daughter,Poets & the Painters)...Eastern Psych drugouts(In the Opium Den & 1001 Nights) and best of all - those sublime pop songs, done so elegantly...Blades of Battenburg,Candy Says,& especially Gabrielle(a classic!)
Too many highlights to list...some re-touching of old tracks, and for once, all for the better.Get it while you still can... ESSENTIAL!!!

4 out of 5 stars Jules Verne, Nostradamos and Tolkien would love this........2005-10-06

Paul Roland is prolific. With over 11 albums and 14 books (on the Occult) to his credit. My guess is that you never heard of him.

That said, you DID find yourself here so's something tipped you off. PR is into all kinds of strange stuff, but the focus of this 2cd anthology is his intense love of Tales and Myths which abound in Literature (especially macabre Victorian era) and popular Mythos.
The 38 tracks presented here are anything but gloomy or "evil". The closest musical similarity would be Al Stewart in voice, and the content of these "Tales" would be Stewart's 'Nostradamos'.

As a matter of fact, 'Nostradamos' is the template for ALL the finely crafted music.

These 'Gaslight Tales' are populated with characters from Poe,Lovecraft,Crowley,Dickens,to name a few. Along with diverse ghost, pirate and murder stories, there's also a solid amount of Occult arcana from all kinds of eldritch sources.

The music is VERY melodic, lush and layered. The production qualities are primo, and the music never overwhelms the lyrical telling of these "Tales" (ala Al Stewart). I believe PR does all the instrumentation (ala Mike Oldfield) too, and though the subject matter can appear gruesome, it's delightfully gruesome.

There are 38 tracks total, CD#1 is 21 tracks at 72:30, and CD#2 is 17 tracks at 73:30. Recommended for lovers' of the Supernatural, Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature.

4 out of 5 stars Rough and ready, Russel ROCKS!.......2003-04-17

I first purchased Bastard Life or Clarity, and I was hooked. GASLIGHT is a previous CD, and has two tracks that were re-recorded in studio for BLOC. This is Aussie folk-ROCK, which is all about storytelling, and Russell can really tell a story! 'Circus' is a mellow and pleasant piece; 'You Treat Me Like Chocolate..."something you shouldn't touch between meals....instead of having at it...." is a slightly mournful plea to a lover. 'Oblique is My Love' and 'what's Her Name' are harder rocking bits with a great beat. "it's a wonder that I get any sleep....I ache for more of--what's her name".
'The Legend of Barry Kable is a fabulous live recording, great story. I can't decide if I like this or the studio version better, so I keep listening to both! This song alone is worth buying the CD for. 'What You Want Me To Forget' and 'Nowhere' are catchy rock tunes, the latter with a bit of rap thrown in (somehow it works); 'Wendy' is a terrific story about a single mom "she's got no husband, but who cares...she can find a man--any time she wants one. Don't you put her down, she tried to do it right, but sometimes things don't come out quite...the way we plan them......" Great lyrics, 'Wendy' was rerecorded for BLOC, its a bit rougher but more heartfelt here. There's an annoying 6 minutes of silence on the CD between this song and the next 3 "bonus" (unlisted) tracks, which are all decent songs, if not terribly special. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing Bastard Life Or Clarity along with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Russell can sing and write music!.......2003-03-27

I bought this CD after stumbling on TOFOG-BLOC at the local Borders Books and music. I loved BLOC and Gaslight! It's hard to believe that one man can write, sing, and act...and be good at all three! But then again, Russell has been signing and writing with Dean Cochran since they were teenagers...If you like good, down to earth Rock-n-Roll, buy TOFOG CDs!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars TOFOG Shows Promise.......2002-10-03

I was so impressed by TOFOG's live L.A. show in August 2001 that I couldn't pass up buying "Gaslight" when I saw it was available for purchase after the concert. I discovered that this band is much stronger on stage than "Bastard Life or Clarity" suggested.

Although "Gaslight" is not the greatest album, there are some gems, namely "Circus," "Oblique Is My Love," "What's Her Name," "Eternity," and two unlisted bonus tracks, "Castle Builder" and "Danielle." Then there are "She's Not Impressed," "David," and "What You Want Me To Forget?", admittedly weaker songs that I nevertheless like, partly because I can still picture them being performed more than a year after the concert.

Owning both "BLOC" and "Gaslight," I have to say my frustration with Crowe's vocals is that he sometimes (surprisingly) "holds back" in the studio recordings. (A notable exception is "Things Have Got to Change," a *great* song from "BLOC" and my personal favorite.) That's why I think "Oblique Is My Love" and "What's Her Name" are two of their best songs; they are live recordings that show their strengths as a band.

Overall, I enjoy TOFOG's music. They have a good sound and seem to have a good time making music together, which is always a treat. Even though they are a much better band live than the weaknesses in their albums might suggest, I'd still recommend giving their music a try.

    4 out of 5 stars Singing Crowe.......2002-09-06

Loved the live stuff....made me want to rush out and see TOFOG live..sounds like they put on an awesome show...Seems that Mr. Crowe can rock the house too.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped..........2002-08-16

I bought this CD before it was even available in the States. I was really excited about it because I'm a fan of Russell Crowe. Sadly, I was a little disappointed. There a few ok songs on here, but its mostly unforgettable. It's a good thing Russell is an amazing actor because his music career isn't the most impressive...at least not yet...

This is a delightful compilation of Native American flute music. I bought it primarily for the Coyote Oldman track, but I discovered that it has 10 performers and 14 tracks featuring a variety of instruments and styles. The tracks have a hauntingly beautiful quality. It is a well recorded and well produced album that would be an excellent introduction for anyone new to the scope and depth of Native American flute music.
