Ex-Jellyfish and -Grays member Jason Falkner continues to mine a complicated baroque pop with his second solo album. Coproduced by Jason and Nigel Godrich (who were behind the boards on Radiohead's OK Computer), Can You Still Feel? is a heavily textured wash of modern psychedelic guitars and subliminally affecting multitracked vocals. Essentially "problematic pop," Falkner's music is at once hummable and stunningly elaborate, as befits a former Juilliard student. "Author Unknown" features an undeniably catchy chorus yet for the rest of the song is devilishly complex, with clever vocal production tricks and a sonic whiplash mix of acoustic and electric guitars. Best are "Revelation" and "Goodnight Sweet Night," both straight-to-the-point misty-eyed ballads accentuated by Falkner's sad, sweeping orchestration. Falkner is an acquired taste well worth acquiring. --Rob O'Connor

2 out of 5 stars Depressing follow-up to his great debut album.........2006-05-05

"Author Unknown" is so superior in every way to this medicore album, it's not even funny. This album lacks the hooks and sweet melodies of its predecessor. Nigel Godrich strips away whatever musical virtues Jason may have (had). The "Flavor of the Month" Godrich was a wrong fit for Jason. The best songs here would be the lesser songs on "Author Unknown". And even at that, those songs were either outtakes from his previous album, or outtakes from the Grays album. As of May 2006, Jason hasn't recorded a follow-up (not counting that Beatles novelty album). He did record an ep a year or two, but that, like this album, was a virtual washout.
Save your money and skip it.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing studio pop craftsmanship!!.......2004-12-14

I love this cd. First off, I must say, I love power pop, The Knack, Cheap Trick, the Shazam, The Deal, etc. etc. Granted, music is all about a listener's personal taste (you negative reviewers of this cd obviously have none, ha ha). But seriously, this may be one of the all-around best pop cds written. Ever. Period. I am not even a Jellyfish fan nor was I as impressed with Presents Author Unknown by Mr. Falkner. Chalk it up to maturity or just sheer GENIUS, but this album is the bee's knees. It just has everything...the lyrics are fascinating and intelligent and the production, wow, the production is complete with surprises and pace-changes that are always interesting and make you want to go back and hit "play" one more time. This is one of those cds you could get lost with on a desert island and it would just be okay (hmm, solar powered iPod maybe?).

More details: Amazon.com's review - DEAD ON accurate, and it's really hard to add much else. Few artists or works to compare this cd to because the songs are fairly unique and quirky, in a Beck kinda way, while remaining always on the happier lighter and confident side of pop. I suppose references to Owsley and Cheap Trick are appropriate, but the songs on this cd are longer and stand by themselves as works of art unlike the typical 2min30sec power pop song by The Strokes or the Hives. There are sounds of The CARs, Beach Boys, heck, even ELO. The tunes here aren't glammy, but at times there is some Queen type bravado underlying, but more in spirit or swagger then actual production. But ahhhhh, the production.... every note and twist and turn of each song is for a grander purpose only a genius can ever understand. We simple fans must just try and try and, of course, appreciate.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, We Can!.......2004-10-09

The textbook definition of the term `ear candy', Jason Falkner's follow-up to his formal solo debut 'presents Author Unknown' is another layered sonic treat that benefits greatly from the crystalline production of Radiohead and Beck collaborator Nigel Godrich. 'Can You Still Feel' doesn't break any new ground, however. In fact, like it's predecessor, it owes a great debt to the early '70s output of that other multi-intrumentalist and pop whiz, Todd Rundgren. That's not to say that Falkner is a slavish imitator--the man's just proud of his influences and wears them accordingly.

This is pop music made by a rocker with a keen sense of melody and arrangement, the likes of which are seldom heard on radio or MTV. Don't deprive yourself of it just because clueless, tone-deaf, bought-and-paid-for program directors choose to look the other way. Cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as "Author Unkown" but close..........2003-08-30

First off let me say that I found Jason Falkner through my love of Jellyfish. I doubt anyone listening to this CD hasn't heard of Jellyfish-but if you haven't stop right now and pick up they're two CDs. That said, Falkner is a genius in his own right. His first album "Author Unknown" was steller (to say the least!) "Can You Still Feel" is almost just as good-however I was a bit dissapointed with a few of the songs. For one thing the songs seem to be longer. 'The Plan' and 'Revelation' stand out as being too long (especially 'Revelation' which, I'm sad to say I skip). 'Revelation' is a song about how wonderful and alive the world is...that's great. In the execution, however, Falkner ends up sounding like a High School aged poet (I know I've written at least one poem very much like 'Revelation'). In fact, this one song is probably what knocks down an otherwise solid album. 'My Lucky Day' kicks total ass-with it's groovy keyboards and torid lust story. 'Eloquence' reminds me of 'Afraid of Himself' from "Author Unknown" though I'm not sure why. 'Honey' and 'See You Again' are lovely pop songs (about love, of course). The second track 'Author Unknown' shines brightly as well...but some of the magic from the first album seems a bit gone. Falkner still plays all of his instuments, and does all of the singing-maybe he needs to inject some new blood into his records. Granted, both of his albums stand head and shoulders over everything on MTV (one and two)and whatever's on the radio. I love his music, but I think he'd lighten up a little if he had a few bandmates again. Perhaps as a music fan I'm the one who needs to 'lighten up' and just bask in Falkners artistic glow. If you like Pop that's not for kids, give Falkner a listen.

3 out of 5 stars Some good things happen.......2003-04-30

Hey!
I enjoy some of this album a lot and all of this album a little, in other words as a whole record it's nice but not great, however some of the tunes are very good...If your finding Jason Falkner by following links from other bands then read all of the reviews with the understanding that people get really excited about good pop records because they are so rare. I would recommend "Author Unknown" by Jason, I enjoy it more than this CD, it's more versatile and the hooks are simpler and the songs seem less pompous and self serving...Please understand I am a fan of the man (Jason) but I won't get caught up in the fervor, it's a nice record, but it sounds like he's trying too hard.

3 out of 5 stars Oldie, but Goodie.......2006-08-01

Well, I was not expecting to like this one. Its SO old, and very classic (Rodgers and Hart.) But one good thing about it being Rodgers and Hart, is it has lovely lyrics. Clever and witty on every song. Mark Twains book was done justice I think, but I've never read the book. I would suggest this to classic lovers, and newer Broadway fans who want to hear a`"classic" other than Oklahoma. This is a good one. The other great thing about this CD is you get not only A Connecticut Yankee, but also highlights from two other Rodgers and Hart musicals: Higher and Higher and By Jupiter. AWSOME. Favorite Song: "To Keep My Love Alive"

4 out of 5 stars Once lost, now found and reissued on CD........2005-06-03

One of Decca's earliest cast albums (recorded just a few weeks after their famous OKLAHOMA! album) this very nearly became a lost treasure. Recorded on 16" glass masters in 1943, the original release was on 78 RPMS (complete witha booklet givinga detailed synopsis and all the lyrics.) The revival was not a success and when Long Playing records were introduced in the late 1940s, CONNECTICUT YANKEE was not reissued in the new format.

At one time in the 1960s Decca had the masters transferred to tape for a possible LP reissue. That reissue never happened, and in shipping the discs back to the storage facility, they were broken. The tape was taken from the company's archives and did not turn up until almost 30 years later. Though modern technology could probably have coaxed even better sound from the master discs, we must be thankful that the tape was made when it was.

In the meanwhile there were three unautherized isses of these tracks. A new York based private label called Box Office transferred the 78's to one side of an Lp in the 1970s. Later, AEI released an elaborate gatefold Lp with not only the full score (again dubbed from 78s) but also fabricated some additional tracks reprising some of the songs (in theatrical order) by editing portions from the existing tracks. Finally there was a release on CD from Box Office with horrible sound that stil sometimes turns up for sale. Avoid it. Decca actually sent a request that Box Office withdraw the bootleg Cd.

This edition has much better sound and the bonus tracks by Hildegard and Shirley Ross from BY JUPITER and HIGHER AND HIGHER make the package very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars THOU SWELL. THE YANKEE WINS AGAIN!.......2003-02-09

"A Connecticut Yankee," by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, contains more hit songs than the average Broadway season nowadays. "My Heart Stood," "Still," "Thou Swell" and the redoubtable "To Keep My Love Alive" all sound fresh and vibrant in this fabulously remastered 1943 recording. Particularly wonderful is the total and complete recording of "To Keep My Love Alive," sung by the one great (female) love of the Lyricist's life, Vivienne Segal ... nearly seven minutes of the wittiest ways to do in a husband. This is one of the first "original cast" recordings ever recorded, and it sounds as crisp and clear as a recording made today. Bravo! (Submitted by staff member Stephen J. Finn)

4 out of 5 stars A Lost Gem.......2002-01-17

A wonderful rerelease of glass discs made for the 1943 revival of this charming musical. While the orchestra is less than polished (there is one particular trumpet you can hear over and over that is awful and flat!)--it has a lot of zest to it, and makes one yearn to see the play - indeed, to see more of the Rodgers and Hart shows performed.

3 out of 5 stars Not complete and NOT first CD version.......2001-08-19

This CD collection of tracks from the 1943 revival of the Rodgers & Hart musical is advertised as the first CD presentation of these tracks. This is incorrect. I have a CD issued in 1999 by Box Office Recordings called "A Collector's Rodgers & Hart" which contains all the "Connecticut Yankee" tracks plus 14 additional tracks of Rodgers & Hart covers (different from the covers on the Decca CD).

Worse, I have an AEI LP recording of the revival which has three additional tracks from the show. Why weren't these selections included in this recording?

On the other hand, even the 9 tracks from Connecticut Yankee are worth owning. As a previous reviewer said, just Vivienne Segal's "To Keep My Love Alive" is worth the price of admission!

Although "All's Well That Ends Well" is great. this is an album that shouldn't be forgotten. It was recorded and distrubted by the band themselves. The songs lack some of the hardcore riffs from the new album but they are great songs that you can sing along to. Some of the screaming is sub-par but this can be ignored.

some highlights are:
"Ravishing Matt Ruth"
"Vacation to Hell"
"Hathaway Lane"
and especially "Bulls Have Horns"

thats not to say the other songs aren't great. they are. buy it.

at a recent show, the keyboard player that they are looking to get their first EP "The Best Way To Ruin Your Life" re-released, if this happens, you should get that too, it has early versions of some of these songs and the great songs "Quantum Mechanics" "Roger and Hollland's Feelings" and "Lindsey Quit Lollygagging"

This is reissue of the first Broadway revival of "A Connecticut Yankee" starring Vivienne Segal and Vera-ellen (is her only major Broadway role). The cd is pretty good. Segal's performance is, as always, charming . I love "To keep My Love Alive" and i think that her performance is the best!. The CD also include addition songs by famous artist such ad Milton Berle and Bing Crosby, and a very rare song "The Bombardier Song " written for the army during the WW2
