Editorial Reviews

Product Description
2003 remastered reissue of the southern rock band's 1977 debut album, originally released on A&M Records, features 9 tracks. Although it made little impact outside the southern states at the time of its release, now it can be said that their debut has never been bettered for its mix of straight-ahead boogie & country-fried melodic rock. Features the writing team of Barnes, Carlisi & Van Zant. Lemon.

If you love 38 Special, then this is THE CD for you. It has so many great songs. My husband is a huge fan (we fight over the CD); even my daughter likes a lot of the songs, and she's only 8.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-01-20

If you like .38 Special you will love this album. It contains all of the well known hits and some great hits that aren't as famous...
A total Compilation of .38 Special...

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction to 38 Special.......2006-04-20

THE BAND: Don Barnes (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica), Donnie VanZant (vocals), Jeff Carlisi (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass), Jack Grodin (drums), Steve Brookins (drums)... and assorted players joining on later albums. The members listed here were the key contributors during the band's hay-day in the late 70's and early 80's.

THE DISC(S): (2001) 2 discs clocking in at just under 150 total minutes (Disc-1 76:50 minutes, Disc-2 72:55 minutes). 24-bit digitally remastered sound. Included with the 2 discs is a 14-page booklet containing band pictures, song titles & credits, thank you's, and what songs came from which albums. The first 9 pages features interviews with frontmen Van Zant and Barnes... discussing tough beginnings, Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crash, and member changes and musical direction. Label - Hip-O/Universal Music.

ALBUM REPRESENTATION: 38 Special (1), Special Delivery (1), Rockin' Into The Night (3), Wild-Eyed Southern Boys (4), Special Forces (4), Tour De Force (5), Strength In Numbers (2), Flashback (1), "Teachers" Soundtrack (1), Rock & Roll Strategy (2), Bone Against Steel (3), Resolutions (4), Live At Sturgis (2), B-Side unreleased (1).

COMMENTS: This compilation features 38 Special from their underrated debut in 1977 through their "Resolutions" album in 1997. Where the Allman Bros and Lynyrd Skynyrd were very 'Southern', I always felt 38 Special was in the same catagory, but leaned toward rock & pop more than the others did. For me, 38 Special had some great songs, but on the 'Southern Rock' wave, they were just a tad behind the major players. The Allman Brothers had been established since 1969, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker since 1973, and the Outlaws in 1975. Molly Hatchet's first two albums in 1978/79 had a deeper impact then 38 Special at the time... but 38 Special's time was coming. 1979 saw a bit of a resurgance in Southern Rock... and 38 Special was there with their first big hit... "Rockin' Into The Night" (from album #3). This was their first break... as their first two albums were vastly different than their 3rd. 1980-83 featured 38 Special at the top of their game - releasing perhaps their biggest and best albums - "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys", "Special Forces", and "Tour De Force" in succession. After these 3 albums, the band had only hit and miss success. There are several 38 Special compilations out there... and this "Anthology" is the most comprehensive one. "Flashback" is good, but short at 14 songs (drawbacks being 4 live tracks and nothing from after '87). "Millenium Collection" is average, but also short at 12 songs. If you want a one disc collection, I recommend 38 Special's "Very Best Of The A&M Years" from 2003 (18 tracks - all their big hits). I was a bit more than a casual fan back in the 80's and dare I say there are some songs here on "Anthology" that I did not recognize right off the bat. "Anthology" features one live track (a good thing because I prefer the studio versions). The sound is crisp and the remastering definitely helps here. The song order is not truly chronological - it starts with "Rockin' Into The Night" and then reverts back to the first 2 albums, then proceeds album to album. Disc 2 is mainly their later era material. One of the only things I don't understand about the band is the two drummers playing at the same time (maybe not totally so in the studio, but they definitely did in concert... the Outlaws did it, as did the Grateful Dead... but never understood why). This is a great collection of tunes from the band - Comprehensive with many a deep album cut. If you're looking for one disc with strictly hits, go with the "A&M Years" disc mentioned above. "Anthology" would be the last one you'd ever need though (4.5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars Great Sing-a-Long.......2005-08-24

I'm 52 years old and grew up on .38 Special and their contemporaries. I appreciate their music now more than I did "back in the day". I bought an IPOD and this is one of the first CDs I loaded. I hate going grocery shopping and when I go I just put in the ear buds and crank up these tunes. I get a few odd looks because I usually end up singing aloud and dancing a little in the aisles as I look for my items. But guess what! I don't care. I no longer hate grocery shopping nearly as bad as I did. At least I can get out of the store without wanting to kill someone. This music makes me happy. It's alive and vibrant just as it was years ago.

5 out of 5 stars If You Like What You Hear on the Radio, Buy This........2006-11-10

I'm really just a radio fan of 38 Special. But I decided to take a chance with this "best of" collection. And I came out golden on this one. Every single song is at least as good as the handful that you hear on the radio now.
Personally, I tend to go for the harder bands. So I'm often having to enjoy my music in a semi-voluntary semi-solitude while pretty much everyone else plugs their ears and runs away. But this is catchy, very nice, and lively while somewhat softer rock and roll, with a more general appeal--something that the whole family can kind of enjoy together. I would probably compare 38 Special to the Eagles, for beat, intensity and overall listenability.
So far it has a 5-star average rating, and I wouldn't mess with that.

4 out of 5 stars Great Tunes.......2006-08-17

This is really good music to listen to on a beautiful day driving in the car or just hanging out- I love 38 Special and this CD has alot of their hits on it. Its worth a buy

5 out of 5 stars WHOA.......2006-04-21

I could see, why they are called Southern Rock indeed. At first, back in the old days (aka 90's for me), I mistaked this guys for an 80's band. Most of their great songs came out in the 80's I believe. So, these guys can't be southern rock. But that doesn't matter, cause they still kick it.

Caught Up In You, is quite a good song, due to the guitar solo. It's practically that 80's "Dream song" since it's so perfect in every manner. You know how the band Autograph had their perfect song called "Turn Up the Radio"? Well, Caught Up in You, is just as perfect, or more perfect. I can picture many things when that guitar solo goes off... It's quite astounding what music can do to the brain.

Somebody Like You- When this song first started, I thought it sounded a little like Billy Idol's debut. This isn't a waste of time ballad, like some bands right. This is happy feeling, yet sad due to the "broken" heart. Any broken hearted person could listen to this and feel great. This song makes alot of sense, which helps you come to your senses. (good line huh?) The Soli (minor guitar solo) is very good.

Like No Other Night- Very very 80's. I could see someone rocking out to this song. I heard the song "Straight to Your Heart" inside that song, by Bad English. Except, it's well written. I could imagine John Waite singing this. Over all it's a great song.

I reviewed only 3 songs, because they touch me the most on the inside. They're fantastic. I love .38 Special. Where would the music world be without them. This cd (off itunes) blew me away, listening to the whole thing. I listened to this cd many times last night, and I didn't get to bed until atleast 3 am! haha!

On my ipod, I only have hair metal and classic rock, aka like Journey, Boston, Eric Clapton, etc. I got sick of rap and R&B, so I took it all off. Sound crazy? Well, I've only been listening to classic rock and hair metal for a few years, since I was born in 1990. KEEP CLASSIC ROCK AND HAIR METAL ALIVE.

5 out of 5 stars This guys are not Southern Rock in my book.......2006-01-03

If you looked up 38 Special on the internet or in a book, you would probably see these two words: southern rock. Widely considered southern rock, I think they have a more Foriegner-type pop/rock sound and feeling. This album is a rather nice compilation. It has all the major and minor hits and fan favorites. You get 18 songs on one disc and it's rather inexpensive. Not a bad deal. If you like 80s pop/rock like Foriegner or REO Speedwagon buy this superb collection of radio friendly rock godliness.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE!! 38 SPECIAL AT ITS FINEST.......2007-07-11

Aside from the killer classic "Hold On Loosely", this album kicks some serious butt with "First Time Around", "Hittin and Runnin" and Bring It On. These songs make me smile and tap my feet. Brings back great memories from my wilder days. Needs to played at high volume. Don Barnes' lead vocals give me chills.

5 out of 5 stars ROCK YOU UNDER THE TABLE!.......2006-01-19

FIVE STARS AFTER DRINKING WHISKEY!!!!!!!!!!
.38 SPECIAL were the southern rock band that made it into the eighties with numerous hit songs. Fronted by Donnie Van Zant, the brother of Skynyrds Ronnie Van Zant, these guys were a hard rockin' tail chasin' bar band, that really cooked up some hot chops. Not as kick ass as Skynyrd, but what kind of a*hole compares. They have a totally different sound. Actually, they are closer to sounding like Journey than they are like Skynyrd, but I love this stuff, when I'm way drunk at the bar. I like to select this album on the Online Jukebox, especially if theres a fine looking floozy bendin' over the pool table. HOLD ON LOOSELY, they always start shakin' it! BACK ALLEY SALLY is a sure fire pleaser too! The title track and pretty much the whole thing is good. ROCK AND ROLL!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix of Southern and Melodic Rock.......2003-11-17

.38 Special's fourth album in 1981 excellently blends southern rock vibe with melodic hard rock. Jim Peterik known as Survivor's keyboardist and songwriter was instrumental in adding melodic hard rock vibe penning HOLD ON LOOSELY which became their first major hit and FANTASY GIRL second single which became a minor hit. Jim Peterik also co-wrote HITTIN' AND RUNNIN' and WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYS, the title track. HOLD ON LOOSELY is one of my all time favorite songs among the excellent songs Jim have created so far including Survivor. At the latter part Lynard influenced nice southern rock can be tasted. Essential for early 80s pop rock fans.

5 out of 5 stars .38 Special's Second Great One In A Row.......2002-09-23

WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS was .38 Special's second great album in a row. The first two cuts- "Hold On Loosely" and "First Time Around", as well as "Hittin' And Runnin'"- are downright cautionary in their lyrical content; the title track is pure boogie heaven; and "Fantasy Girl" is simple Southern pop-rock. A few songs are filler, but the great ones make this album worthy of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars .38 before they sold out.......2000-09-08

This CD has the classic .38 Special sound before they went top 40. Nothing fancy here---just some good old southern rock 'n roll. "Hold on Loosely" is hands down the best song they have ever recorded.

This is a very decent album. I am not a huge fan, but this album and Special Forces are true classic rock albums. There is not a bad track on this CD. And some of these are some really good rockers!!!

Unfortunately, this was the last good album .38 Special made.

5 out of 5 stars Music Lover.......2005-09-09

I have been a huge fan of .38 Special for a long time. This album, "Strength in Numbers" has been my favorite. I have the album and cassette but not the CD. This album has the best of the songs they have released.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Rock and Roll Album from 38 Special!!.......2004-04-10

"Strength in Numbers" is the 1986 album release from Southern Arena rockers 38 Special. At the time, the band was at the peak of a winning streak crafting albums of upbeat melodic pop-rock with a slight Country tinge. This album is no exception. It's a fantastic album from beginning to finish and displays the band's tight musicality and hook-filled songwriting at its best.
Guitarist Don Barnes is mostly up front on lead vocals here while main lead singer Donnie Van Zant takes a step back from the microphone until the very end of the album bringing it to a dynamic finish on its final two tracks.
Tracks such as the hits "Somebody Like You" and "Like No Other Night" were all over the airwaves when this album was released. Other standouts such as "Last Time", "Just A Little Love", "Hearts On Fire" and "Against The Night" are impossible to dislike and contain enough hooks to have you humming in no time. The slower tracks ("Once In A Lifetime" and "Has There Ever Been A Good Goodbye") are equally enjoyable and shows the band tackling ballads as effortless as their trademark rock numbers.
With all this said, "Strength In Numbers" is a great album and a wonderful trip down memory lane. The album also marked the end of an era for 38 Special. Two years later, the band regrouped with a new line-up without guitarist/singer Don Barnes. Barnes did return to the band a decade later bringing back its signature sound.
If you can find a copy of "Strength In Numbers" (as I was fortunate enough to find), pick it up. It's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Undiscovered Gem........2003-12-23

In many ways, it's a mix of their early 80s hard Country tinged rock, and the arena pop/rock of their next album "Rock & Roll Strategy."

1) Somebody Like You -- Energy packed arena rock minor hit with a slight southern sound. A heartbreak and break-up song these guys do so well. I'm still amazed this didn't become a huge hit.

2) Like No Other Night -- Another small hit. Similar to the first song, but not quite as poppy or catchy.

3) Last Time -- Melodic, only slightly less heavy pop tune about this being the 'Last Time' his girl will get another chance again. I don't think it was actually a hit, but I very vaguely *think* I might have heard it played on the radio. (Keep in mind, I was only about 4 years old when this came out). It's also worthy of being a big hit.

4) Once in a Lifetime -- The first song to be a semi ballad. Not as good as the first three tunes, but another underrated pop masterpiece. Just another reason to pick this entire album up, even if you have a hits package.

5) Just A Little Love -- More of a Country sounding mid tempo rocker, about how 'Just a little love can go a long way.'

6) Has There Ever Been A Good Goodbye -- A good question. LOL. A slightly uptempo southern rock ballad which begs this very question. One of the more pop songs of the album.

7) One in a Million -- Just about the most underrated song in their catalogue. A true ballad, with an '80s poppy, melodic sound. Could have easily been a huge hit. A precursor to what would be on their next album.

8) Hearts on Fire -- A tougher edged mid tempo rocker sure to please fans of the bands' earlier, heavier work. It's less pop and the most Country sounding song on the album, but it still fits in.

9) Against the Night -- A masterpiece which never deserved to be just an album track! Melodic, hard pop/rock arena anthem that's just a lot of fun. As an analogy, imagine Journey or Loverboy performing southern fried rock.

10) Never Give an Inch -- Back to a more basic, mid tempo southern sound. This time, about not giving in. A good, but not great album closer.

I'm not sure if this CD is even in print anymore. If you're into Eddie Money, Georgia Satellites, Lynyrd Skynard; 80 music; or even Country and you see this somewhere, pick it up! The best songs are actually the non-hits.

5 out of 5 stars 38 Specials Best.......2002-12-22

This was also my first 38 Special CD (actually it was an album), and everytime I play it, it ends too soon. Not a bad cut on this CD. There may have been stronger individual songs on their earlier stuff, but there was a big drop off in effort after that one or two songs, where the rest of the CD was not up to the same quality. Don Barnes had a hand in writing seven of the ten cuts here, and he is usually involved in their better songs. Rarely does he write one alone, but even on Flashback (a greatest hits CD), he was involved in eight of the fourteen cuts there. Not trying to put down the others in the band, but I personally enjoy his stuff the most. The song "Like No Other Night" is my personal favorite, but from beginning to end if you are looking for 38 Special's best that is not on a Greatest Hits package, this is the one you want to start with. The only drawback to buying this one first is that you will never be as pleased with any of the others from beginning to end. I have all but their live CD, and have never regreted having any of them.

4 out of 5 stars Great album--worth having.......2007-07-11

Besides the top 20 hits, I feel that "See Me in Your Eyes" and "One of the Lonely Ones" are fantastic. No bad songs on this album, just some are better than others. Should be part of your collection if you like this type of music. Love Don Barnes' lead vocals!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Southern Rockers.......2006-07-11

I have always been a great fan of Southern Rock. From Skynyrd to Blackfoot. 38 Special is no exception, with members from Donnie Van Zant to Jeff Carlisi, Don Barnes n the rest of the crew. 38 Special are truly a great rock band. Hits like Back Where You Belong n If I'd Been The One. It just doesn't get any better then that! If you like Southern Rock you gotta check this out. Get the party started with the Wild-Eyed Southern Boys and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Eyed Southern Boys' Finest Effort.......2003-11-23

.38 Special is a six-men band featuring twin bass guitars and twin drums often what southern rockers are like. Their sixth album in 1983 may be a bit too defined to be southern rock but is one of the finest albums during that time. Despite the lack of songwriting genius Jim Peterik of Survivor, they could make the greatest song collections with also great songwriting pair Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi. This album produced two top 20 hits IF I'D BEEN THE ONE and BACK WHERE YOU BELONG. Actually these songs were the very reason why I became a 38 Special fan. These hits were well received by Japanese yogaku (western music) fans during the winter of 1983/84. I just started listening to yogaku program and I instantly liked these songs. The rest of the album is also great with Don Barnes' melody-driven mellow vocal. ONE OF THE LONELY ONES, TWENTY CENTURY FOX and ONE TIME FOR OLD TIME are also the highlights of this album.

Recommended for 80's pop rock fans, particularly Foreigner and Survivor fans.

4 out of 5 stars 38 Special Hitting their stride.......2002-12-21

If the whole CD were as good as the first two songs ("If I'd Been the One" and "Back Where You Belong") this would have been a superb CD. As it is, the other seven songs tend to blend together, as many of their others do. However there is nothing here that is terrible, just not as noteworthy as the first two songs. If you are a fan of 38 Special or Southern Rock, this will fit in well with your collection.

This is my favorite .38 Special CD. I love the ballads on it.

5 out of 5 stars 38 Special stomps!.......2006-08-17

the guys in this band have a sound with size-12 shoes. if you like this band, I suggest you try the Allman Bros., Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. standout tracks are
Rockin Into the Night, Hold On Loosely, Wild-eyed Southern Boys,
Fantasy Girl, Caught Up In You, If I'd Been The One, Back Where You Belong, and Like No Other Night. the question is: where is this band? it's awesome. they need to make a comeback.

3 out of 5 stars ok but not what i expected.......2004-07-13

This cd was good for what i paid but if your looking for real southern rock stick with skynyrd or the allmans heres the run down the first 4 songs are good then it gets soft but all in all good if you want a sample

4 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For.......2004-05-04

I wanted the big hits, at a budget price. This disc delivers. It has all the hits I wanted (Hang On Loosely, Caught Up In You, Fantasy Girl, Rockin' Into The Night, Wild Eyed Southern Boys). And all of the songs that were new to me are solid, too, no filler in this collection. Couldn't ask for more!

3 out of 5 stars Get Flashback instead.......2003-10-01

.38 Special was one of the greatest rock bands of the seventies and the eighties, but these days they have become forgotten. Why? THESE GUYS ARE A GREAT BAND! The mere fact that their music has become forgotten fills me with rage, because it's about a thousand times better than the junk that gets radioplay these days. This is one of their best known hits compilations. Read on for my review.

PROS:
-If you're the casual fan of the band, it's doubtful this compilation will fail to please you, because all of the major hits (Hold On Loosely, Caught Up In You, Rockin' Into The Night, etc.) can all be found here.
-A plethora of underrated masterpieces can also be found here, which explore a number of rock styles.
-This is an affordable compilation.
-Most major retailers of compact discs carry this compilation, so you shouldn't have to look to hard for it.

CONS:
-It doesn't fill the CD to the eighty minute time limit. Any non-budget priced hits compilation should ALWAYS fill the time limit.
-Songs aren't in their original release order. Why do hits compilations have to do this to us?
-Why isn't Back To Paradise on here?

OVERALL:
Despite my complaints, this is a good hits package. However, the Flashback hits package is better still. If you're a casual fan of the band, then I suggest picking this up. This, my friends, is REAL rock and roll, not the junk that's been flooding the mainstream in recent years.

5 out of 5 stars All Of 38's Hits On 1 Disc.......2002-10-05

.38 Special combine a whole bunch of influences- from Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, and the Outlaws, to Tom Petty, Bob Seger, and Foreigner. Here you get all of their radio hits on 1 disc or cassette. And the versions of the inspirational "Stone Cold Believer" and "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" are the originals, not rare live recordings, making this set preferable to FLASHBACK.

This band of "Wild Eyed Southern Boys" (to quote one of their album titles) was led by Skynyrd lead singer Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Donnie. They released their first album in 1977, the year the elder Van Zant died in a plane crash, and while their early work centered on swaggering boogie-rocker Van Zant trying to carry his fallen brother's torch, it was co-lead guitarist and chief songwriter Don Barnes who slowly emerged as the group's motivating force through such power-pop hits such as 1981's "Hang On Loosely," '82's "Caught Up in You," and '83's "If I'd Been the One"--all of which made .38 Special one of the era's more interesting hard rock bands. --Billy Altman

4 out of 5 stars TAKING THEIR BEST SHOTS.......2006-01-07

38 SPECIAL-FLASHBACK: 38 Special was one of the more pop oriented (and most successful) Southern rock outfits, due more to co-lead singer/guitarist Don Barnes' ability to pen and sing righteous hooks than to the contributions of Donnie Van Zant (he of the famed trio of Van Zant brothers, two of which have anchored Lynyrd Skynyrd at opposite ends of that band's career). On early classics ROCKIN' INTO THE NIGHT and WILD EYED SOUTHERN BOYS the two shared vocal duties, but the group soon fared better chartwise (losing some of their edge in the process) when Barnes took over as frontman, leaving Van Zant with little to do but look on. Resulting big hits FANTASY GIRL, CAUGHT UP IN YOU, and HOLD ON LOOSELY, while top notch Top 40 fare, began to all sound alike, and soon enough Barnes dealt the gang a crushing blow by quitting their ranks for a still-born solo career. This necessitated the addition of capable but mellower songwriter/vocalist Max Carl, who played a keyboard instead of an axe (later Carl also "subbed" for the irreplacable Mark Farner in a faux Grand Funk)...38 Special's cheesey prom anthem, the syrupy SECOND CHANCE (thankfully not included here), proved to be their last chance. The inevitable return of Barnes couldn't rescue the group from endless "Flashback" tours and hits repackagings. That said, this original anthology remains far and away their best, even if those Southern Boys ain't quite as wild as they used to be. RATING: FOUR BULLETS

5 out of 5 stars SouthernFried ROCK!!!!.......2005-03-25

.38 Special delievers in spades....These wild-eyed southern rockers put the "raunch"in the guitar licks that ordinary rock groups can't capture...This six man "knock-your-socks-off" group, lead by Donnie Van Zant is clear, distinctive and deliver their potent sound on every cut....never disappointing...When's the last time you could say that about an album, hum?PS. the guys are still doing it at the "House Of Blues" around the country....A sound that never gets old or dated....The result of great mucisians who are true to their roots>>>>>Glenn,La.

4 out of 5 stars Despite notable flaws, their best single-disc collection........2004-11-19

38 Special rose from the ashes of 70's classic rockers Lynyrd Skynard - leader Donnie Van Zant's brother, Ronnie's band (who, sadly died with many other members in a 1977 plane crash).

At first, Donnie's band started out with a soundalike, southern boogie rock sound. As they hit the mainstream, they became southern/hard arena rock, then slowly transitioned into a more pop/rock band as the 80's progressed (peaking with their biggest hit--1988's lite pop/power ballad "Second Chance", which came out after this was released in 1987). All three areas are covered on this collection, though it focuses most heavily on the 2nd one.

1979's ROCKIN' INTO THE NIGHT only features the title track, which has traces of their early pure-southern rock sound, but clearly shows their beginnings as a pop band.

1981's WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS:
-Hold On Loosely
-Fantasy Girl

This was their breakout. These two were the biggest hits from the album, (and, the first, of their career) so I can't complain about their inclusion at all. Though there were other worthwhile songs, like "First Time Around" or "Hittin' and Runnin'."

1982's SPECIAL FORCES:
-Caught Up in You

This was their first of the more slightly power ballad-laden pop hits that would turn them even more into the mainstream. Though this is a great song, "Back On the Track" and especially the lost hit "You Keep Runnin' Away" should've made the cut!

1983's TOUR DE FORCE:
-If I'd Been the One
-Back Where You Belong

I'll definitely say these two songs - which aren't unlike "Caught Up" in sound - are the best from the album, but it had alot more to offer too, especially the southern-sounding ballad "One Time for Old Times," another hit.

1986's STRENGTH IN NUMBERS:
-Like No Other Night

Okay, this was a GREAT album - further going into 80's style arena rock. The best of the ones featured. I can't believe it only got one track. This one is also a mid tempo (slightly) southern pop/rocker, but it sounds a little too like the previous hits. The high-energy, charged "Someone Like You" or the nice ballad "One in A Million" would've been way better choices.

LIVE TRACKS:
-Stone Cold Believer (1979, ROCKIN INTO THE NIGHT)
-Wild-Eyed Southern Boys (1981, same album)
-Rough-Housin' (1982, SPECIAL FORCES)
-20th Century Fox (1983, TOUR DE FORCE)

Okay, these certainly aren't bad renditions, but this really bugs me about collections sometimes. These were great choices as studio songs that would've represented their correspinding albums, and improved the quality of the collection quite a bit. Why did they have to use live versions instead!? That's what "Live" albums are for. Oh well, that's life.

SOUNDTRACK SONGS:
-Teacher Teacher (1984, TEACHERS)
-Back to Paradise (1987, REVENGE OF THE NERDS II)

This (almost) makes up for the songs not included. The former is a sillier, energetic pop/rock number. The latter is especially good - a happy rocker, that's sound is almost a mix of the previous year's STRENGTH IN NUMBERS and the following year's even more poppish ROCK & ROLL STRATEGY albums.

NEW SONGS:
-Same Old Feeling

This is another reason to pick this up, as it's the only place I know of to get this song. Again taking the SIN album's general sound, they give us another winner with this mid paced, Journey-esque lite arena rock love song.

Overall, this is still the best single disc collection of theirs. I would still recommend all their 80's studio albums, though, to get a better idea of their sound. I can't stress SIN and R&R STRATEGY enough (even though many people hate the latter for its pop sound).

4 out of 5 stars Rare opportunity.......2004-06-07

This is a rare case of a compilation that is worthwhile and pleasant to listen.

The tunes were well chosen, the tracks flow like if they belonged to the same studio album.

As a band, 38 Special were really gifted songwriters.

4 out of 5 stars Turning Point.......2003-10-30

Southern melodic pop rocker f38 Specialfs third album in 1979 features the title track that became their first smash hit. ROCKINf INTO THE NIGHT is also the first successful hit since 70s for Jim Peterik, co-founder of Survivor. It is said that this song was originally prepared for Survivorfs debut. 38 Special guys loved it and used this for their album. Some of the tracks in this album such as Stone Cold Believer and You Got The Deal are really rocking hard sounding closer to Foreigner. Yet this album also has good old southern rock vibe as seen in Money Honey. This album might have been a turning point not only for 38 Special but also for Survivor that made their music more melodic and hard as shown in Premonition.

Recommended for late 70s rock fans, Survivor, Allman Brothers, and Lynard Skynard fans.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate By The Great 38.......2002-09-23

ROCKIN' INTO THE NIGHT is the second-best album by the great .38 Special. The title track is great, as is almost everything else, but by far the best song here is the keep-your-head-and-health number, "You're The Captain", which today's kids could learn a bundle from. A couple of cuts are second-rate, but this album gets 5 stars for all the rest.

Album Description

2003 remastered reissue of the southern rock band's 1977 debut album, originally released on A&M Records, features 9 tracks. Although it made little impact outside the southern states at the time of its release, now it can be said that their debut has never been bettered for its mix of straight-ahead boogie & country-fried melodic rock. Features the writing team of Barnes, Carlisi & Van Zant. Lemon.

5 out of 5 stars .38 Special's Debut Is Tied For Their Best.......2006-12-16

.38 Special's debut is tied with ROCKIN' INTO THE NIGHT, WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS, and SPECIAL FORCES as the band's best album ever. On this album, the group sounds like a cross between the Allman Brothers Band circa BROTHERS AND SISTERS and the music on the Outlaws' GREATEST HITS CD/cassette, pointing the way to the band's future fusion of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Outlaws. The best songs here are "Long Time Gone", "Gypsy Belle", "Four Wheels", "Tell Everybody", and "I Just Wanna Rock And Roll." If you love Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, or the Outlaws, you'll really enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Southern Rock Classic Re-Issued And Remastered........2006-07-03

Why A&M Records here in the good old U.S. (well it ain't nearly as good as it used to be) can't get off their butts and re-issue this cd is beyond me (it was available on cd in the late eighties for a short time - then deleted). I remember buying this album back in 1977 after a friend told me it sounded alot like Lynyrd Skynyrd. Well, being a big Skynyrd fan I bought it and low and behold no wonder it sounds like Skynyrd, Donnie Van Zant (Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother) is doing most of the vocals and he sounds alot like his older brother. Also, the dual lead guitars of Don Barnes and Jeff Carlise are reminiscent of the same guitar attack Allen Collins and Gary Rossington of Skynyrd utilized. I remember buying the eight track too and would play "Long Time Gone", and "Gypsy Belle" over and over again in my car. Thirty Eight Special's sophmore release "Special Delivery" produced by ex-Edgar Winter Group bassist/singer Dan Hartman and released in 1978 is even better and like this self titled release it was available in the late eighties for a short time as well. One reviewer mentions this cd doesn't sound like the .38 Special of the eighties. Basically, the band went commercial (sold out) and left alot of their southern roots behind opting for a more pop rock sound. Not that this was a bad thing, the band certainly became hugely successful due to MTV playing their videos and had songs featured on soundtracks (ex. Revenge Of The Nerds Part 2 includes "Teacher Teacher"). But I always liked .38 Special when they were playing Southern Rock and this was at a time when this genre of music was losing it's steam due to the upcoming punk/new wave movement. Think about it, there weren't many bands playing Southern Rock in 1979 except Blackfoot (who had a couple of hits from their Blackfoot Strikes album namely "Train Train" and "Highway Song") , Molly Hatchet (who's album "Flirtin' With Disaster" produced the hit of the same name) and The Charlie Daniels Band (who had a surprise hit with "The Devil Went Down To Georgia"). I'm giving this cd five stars which it certainly deserves.

4 out of 5 stars Southern Rock Vibration.......2004-10-02

Most of the 80s fans remember 38 Special as providing crispy pop rock sounding in the similar vein of Survivor, Foreigner, and REO Speedwagon. Their debut in 1977, however, is hugely different from 38 Special we are aware of. 38 Special was originally sort of Lynard Skynard offshoot. It started from tragic disintegration of 70s legendary band LYNARD SKYANRD.

Donnie Van Zant made a resolution to keep the sound of the band his brother lead. On the whole the album has similar style of SECOND HELPING(1974) of LYNARD SKYNARD. But it is not entirely true that there's no trace of their later sound. LONG TIME GONE already has 38 Special's trademark hook though coated with country-southern attire. FOUR WHEELS has dramatic intro that might have nicely developed into 80s melodic and dynamic sound. PLAY A SIMPLE SONG is a nice soothing slow ballad.

This can be recommendable to every 38 Special fan to find their roots. Enjoy the good ol' 70s sound before glossy synth took over.

4 out of 5 stars .38 Special as they were.......2004-06-01

.38 Special (1977.) .38 Special's first album.

It was in 1977 that classic southern rockers .38 Special released their self-titled debut album. Although the band would gain some major fame in the late seventies and throughought the eighties for a number of hits, including Hold On Loosely and Caught Up In You, their debut did NOT feature the band's signature sound. The album was recorded long before the band began using a southern/arena rock fusion sound - this is straight-up southern rock. How does the band's debut measure up? Read on for my review.

As was previously stated, this is NOT the band you know and love. Sure, it's the same people, but the sound here is drastically different than that of the band's other releases. Don Barnes, who sang most of the band's biggest hits, only does backing vocals on this album. Donnie Van Zant, the brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant, does the lead vocals on this release. Van Zant's vocal stylings are certainly different from those used by Barnes, but they are no less excellent (it wouldn't be until the band's 1979 effort that the two would begin to share vocal duties.) His lead vocals, combined with the fact that the band hadn't, for lack of a better term, "sold out" yet, make this a straight-up southern rock album, which is certainly more reminiscent of classic Lynyrd Skynyrd than the .38 Special that fans of the band have come to know and love. That's not to say this isn't an excellent album, though. Despite being radically different from their later releases, this is a GREAT album, and a severely underrated one, too.

THIS TEXT REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE 2003 REISSUE OF THE ALBUM. This album has never been as popular as any other release by the band, and accordingly, it seems to be one of the more difficult releases of theirs to come by. The album has been reissued, but it's still not readily available in most places. This reissue has expanded liner notes, lyrics, and remastered sound, but it's not likely you'll come across it in a store. Don't be surprised if you end up ordering it.

Sure, .38 Special hadn't quite found the sound that would bring them fame and fortune, but who cares!? Their debut album is nothing short of excellent. Though wildly different from the band's later ventures, this stands as one of their finest and most underrated eras. If you're a fan of the band and you want to see what they sounded like before they were stars, or if you're just a fan of classic southern rock in general, don't hesitate to pick this one up.

5 out of 5 stars All Time Under Rated Album.......2004-01-24

This is one of those hidden gems you might have missed. 38 Special wasn't popular yet when this came out but it is definitely some of their best work. It is pure Southern Rock and if that is your thing, I promise you'll love it. Every track is great. My personal favorite is 'Simple Song' which pretty much sums up what Southern Rock is all about. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Southern Rough Boys.......2004-08-28

"Wild Eyed Southern Boys'" 1982 stuff is another of great album that shows their glorious days. CAUGHT UP IN YOU from this album became their first top 10 hit. This album is quite tight with hard rock edge as shown in CHAIN-LIGHTNING. Jim Peterik of Survivor adds dynamism in their smartly written tracks. Together with the two excellent tracks mentioned above, YOU KEEP RUNNING AWAY is also stellar track showing their mellow side that eventually become their trademark sound. Recommended for early 80s rock fans.

4 out of 5 stars Another worthy 38 Special CD.......2002-12-20

I was hard pressed not to give this CD 5 stars, but Strengh in Numbers, in my opinion, was their best overall effort. "Caught Up In You", "Chain Lightnin" and "You Keep Runnin Away" are the strongest songs on this CD. 38 Special was big when southern rock was at its peak, and they would have given Lynard Skynard a run for their money had they avoid tragedy. With Donnie Van Zandt in this group, I find it a worthy comparison. The other six songs on this CD are okay, but none of the others get my foot tapping, which is always my first indication that a song is something special.

5 out of 5 stars .38 Special's Best Ever.......2002-09-23

SPECIAL FORCES is .38 Special's best album ever. The opener, "Caught Up In You", is a bit overplayed, but the rest is full of undiscovered gems. "Back Door Stranger" is a pro-law-and-order call to arms; "Back On The Track" provides an outlaw anthem for the ages; "Chain Lightning" flogs the Outlaws' jamming style to a Zeppelin-influenced epic; "Rough Housin'" and "Take 'Em Out" bring pure boogie heaven; "You Keep Runnin' Away" is Outlaws-influenced country-rock; and "Breakin' Loose" is both inspirational and cautionary- at the same time! Overall, it behooves any fan of 70s and 80s rock to check this one out as soon as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Southern Rock Album.......2002-06-16

Hands down, one of the best southern rock albums. By far, 38's best. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Van Zant and Barnes make perfect duo.......1999-05-29

Everytime I hear "Hold On Loosly", I think about my high school days. This album brings back a lot of memories. Next best band next to Boston and The Allman Brothers.
