5 out of 5 stars This Wondermints C.D. is Wonderful!.......2006-06-16

The Wondermints are a groups of alternative, retro-sixties and seventies-style rock. Around 2000 they became better known as Brian Wilson's back-up band. Since 1996 they have released three albums of original material (their second album consisted of some semi-obscure cover songs). Their first, self-titled album has a nice, retro-sixties feel to it. However, I don't consider this album outstanding. Their second album, Bali, was more rock-oriented and intense and showcased the group's musicianship. And finally there is their latest album, Mind If We Make Love To You. Wow! This latest effort is exceptional in its lyrics and its infectious melodies. The vocals (by all three members) exhibit exceptional clarity. The additional production is subtle and nicely crafted (but never overdone).

Here are some song highlights:

The songs "Ride" and "Sp Nice" have the strongest Beach Boys influence of any of the songs (the latter is reminiscent of "California Girls"). In fact, Brian Wilson sings back-up on both songs.

"Time has You" is reminiscent of Jimmy Webb's, "Wichita Lineman" melded with the song "Make It With You" by Bread.

"Another Way" has a strong Rod Argent trademark on it. It is more similar to the Argent song, "Pleasure" (from their 1971 Ring Of Hands album) than from any song from the Zombies classic Odessey And Oracle album (I am an avid Zombies fan!).

"Out Of Mind" is also very Jim Webb influenced. It recalls the lilting feel of his early songs like "Up, Up And Away" and "Carpet Man" (both recorded by The Fifth Dimension).

"Sweeetness" has a mid-sixties bossa nove feel while "Something I Know" hearkens back to Billy Joel's "Piano Man," albeit more jazzy, crossed with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of "Mr. Bojangles."

This album is quickly becoming one of my favorite "desert island" albums (along with albums by The Pearlfishers and Swing Out Sister)! If you like very nostalgic retro-pop with lots of indelible melodic hooks, then this C.D. is for YOU!

On this album, the Wondermints does a wondserful Instrumental piece. How knows more instrumental music in that sound? Please write me: leif.boysen@xp-win.com. I am pleasured about every advice. Thank you so much! Leif, Germany

5 out of 5 stars just wanted to chime in.......2004-12-22

after reading the other great reviews, there is little i can add to the lovefest. i loved the first album, read of the rollercoaster of quality that followed, then read the glowing amg review for this one.

then i bought it....

nothing could prepare me for the maturation that took place from the band i first heard. they have absorbed the full on joy of touring with brian wilson, and it rubbed off on their songwriting.

even if you never heard any of their material before, the fully realised vision they created is overwhelming to say the least!

the production is as good as an album can get, and their chord changes are to die for to say the least, but don't die, because you won't be able to hear it again, i am at about one every other day listening to it, to try to keep it somewhat fresh.

the production is sooooo dreamy, it makes me happy to hear ANYONE making pop music with effects/atmosphere, everyone seems to be stuck on the "less is more" aesthetic, which i think we can all say has been done to death, twice.

i love them for creating a beautiful, positive, entrancing album in an age where true songwriting is "p.r. work, sexy looks, hot videos, and bling bling" even the pop/rock acts of the day have no bearing in ANY time period, some are trying to be new wave revivalists, but they have aped the wrong angle of the sound that was and is loved/cherished, and the garage rock/pop thing is done so poorly, that any hack can sneak out an o.k. song, then make a career off of lackluster songwriting.

ladies and gentlemen, we are in the dark age of music, so hold on to the good bands you know, and hold tight.
albums to own:

sneetches: sometimes that's all we have, slow
hollow men: cresta
nick lowe: jesus of cool, labour of lust
the new pornographers: mass romantic, electric version
THE ZOMBIES: ODYSSEY AND ORACLE, SINGLES A'S AND B'S(MUST OWN THIS)

there are more, but that is a great place to start for good headphone music.

5 out of 5 stars "Wow..... can I hear that one again?".......2004-08-07

That's my reaction to every single track on this remarkable CD. I am brand new to the Wondermints and I feel like I've just discovered the world's most valuable, and most hidden musical treasure.

I purchased the CD on iTunes yesterday and have been playing it non-stop ever since with increased appreciation every time through. The thing is, I usually tire quickly of music, even music I LOVE. But that's not the case here.... These tunes are all so listenable, so melodic, so surprizingly creative, that I find myself yearning to hear more. Really, like a breath of fresh of air is the ambiance of this music. I just love having this vibe filling my space.

How did I get here? Well, maybe not surprizing, I'm a huge fan of Brian Wilson. I love his music and him as a person. He has a very special gift among all songwriters. Well, it turned out I saw the Wondermints backing him in concert when he wheeled through here in 2001. I remember thier introduciton onstage, but it has not been until now that I've heard them separately as a band, and, what a band!

These guys are amazingly creative artists. Wonderful songwriting. Yes, the strong influence of Brian's music is indelibly stamped on everything the Wondermints do... its that quirkly good feeling harmonic brilliance, but more than that. The music make you FEEL GOOD in your soul. I hear Beatles influence too. But its really very original stuff, and unique unto itself. This album has joined the ranks of my most treasured recordings, and has been a wonderful 'introduction' (for me) of what has quickly become my favorite band.

If you don't own this record, don't hestitate in getting it... I cannot imagine anyone not liking it, except for those that are tone deaf and so full of angst that they cannot bear to listen to anything pretty and soul stirring.

This band needs the support of music lovers everywhere. There's so much trash out there passing for music, its a shame these guys aren't hugely known. They sure deserve to be.

5 out of 5 stars Wondermints.......2007-02-24

I bought this album several years ago at a Brian Wilson concert. It's a whole lot of great songs. Darian writes the kind of songs you wanna hear over and ever again. Also, thought the 80+ bonus tracks of waves followed by a rejected beer ad was pretty funny.

4 out of 5 stars Great power pop.......2006-10-30

Terrific power pop album. The Brian Wilson influences are clear, and are wonderful.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great........2004-10-26

Bali is a clever pop offering but it's also over-reaching and too derivative for my tastes. Perhaps its only intention is to be an encomium of 60's pop. There are moments of brilliance. (Cellophane and Spoke of a Whirled Wheel being representative of that.) Does this cd draw me in and cause me to listen to it again and again as say Sgt Peppers or Pet Sounds does? Of course not. Is it entertaining? I suppose. There were moments when a chord change or selection of sounds caught me off guard but after a half dozen listenings I ended up skipping over a majority of the songs and the cd now sits in my kitchen underneath, I believe, a pile of papers.

5 out of 5 stars Creativity and Listenability at it's Best.......2004-08-30

I've long been of the opinion that a truly magical recording just begs to be played again and again. "Bali' is such an album. Make no mistake, this is high art. I find Wondermint's sound to be SO refreshing and unique among the mass of noise out there. I confess to only recently discovering these wonderful artists last month when I purchased "Mind if We Make Love', which is also magic from beginning to end. Bali', which I understand was the predecessor to the aforementioned masterpiece, reveals more of the bands evolvement, (they make great back to back listens by the way... sounds like one continuum),

So, what sets these guys apart from the crowd? Well I guess it's like anything in music: you either really resonate with what you hear on a vibrational level or not. Well, I do. I LOVE this stuff. First of all, its surprizingly creative. Every song here goes into unexpected territory musically. They weave a beautiful tapestry of sound textures throughout and never stay too long on one... so the music is never boring and forever interesting. The guys are masterful musicians. Very complex and tight harmonies ride relentless high energy sound waves that continually change and take the listener on a pleasure ride.

But what I really notice as being refreshing is that this band really appreciates beauty in the way that the older great artists of the sixties embodied. By that I mean, vocal harmony, chording, etc. is just friendly to the ear. Lots of great vocal work that is arranged tightly with the instrumentation to create a total sound that is unique. And they play with a great deal of passion and youthful energy. It's music I feel in my gut. Their belief in thier art, and the authenticity really shines though.

'Bali' appears to be a theme album of sorts, but I'm still working on deciphering exactly what that is. Ha ha... it doesn't matter. The experience of listening is it's own reward. It has many fine moments, but really the whole set is of very high calibre. The stylish opener, 'Arnaldo Says' and the sweet following 'Sting o' Luv' are among my current songs that I just can't get enough of. 'Hypnolove' is also absolutely spellbinding, and is very high on my list of favorite songs by ANYONE at ANYTIME. It's pure magic! Other high points: 'In and around Greg Lake', 'Cellophane', 'Spoke of the Wheel Whirled', 'Wanderlust', 'Telemetry', well, I could on.... and include every track here! There is not a song here that is less than a wonderful song. These guys are the 'beatles' or 'beach boys' of the current generation. Immense talent. I hope they eventually get the public recognition they so much deserve.

Bottom line: Don't hesitate to buy this CD. Its a beautiful and very cool and original recording. Theres nothing else out there like it, except of course, for other Wondermint gems. But even then, this is unique unto itself.
VIVA WONDERMINTS!

5 out of 5 stars Bali Pop.......2003-09-10

This is a terrific album by the best pop group to come along in years. The musicianship is stellar, the production is creative and intelligent and fun, and the melodies are the best I've heard from any modern band. Their many influences are incorporated smoothly and literately; they compliment the Wondermints' sound but never dominate it, and the songs are all fresh and different but still form a single cohesive album. The title song evokes the Beach Boys' "Smiley Smile" album.

Almost a kvetch: like much of what's around currently, these great songs tend towards a little glibness (e.g. a song about puppetoons); lyrics are clever without any great depth of feeling. This doesn't affect the pleasure of the listening experience, but they really take it to the next level lyrically and emotionally with great success on their next album, "Mind If We Make Love To You", a dynamic stride forward for the best band going.

5 out of 5 stars A fantasic first album !.......2007-04-12

This band is entirely underrated and this album is a gem! Great songs like "Tracy Hyde", "Proto Pretty", and other gems like "Time" and "Global Village Idiot" are very catchy. Many people compare them to The Beach Boys and what not, but I believe they have their own sound. It is very comtemporary but pays tribute to the sixties sound beautifully.

2 out of 5 stars quite frankily, the myth is better than the album..........2005-01-15

i bought this album after hearing about them from a fellow beach boys fan. i'm a huge pet sounds fan, but i love all kinds of orchestrated rock from "the left banke" to "beulah." this album is not that good, people. it's not even "okay." there are way better takes on the "brian wilson" (read: phil spector) sound. whether it's "the ladybug transistor" or "the apples in stereo." heck, check out a great vancouver band called "ashley park" as well. the production on this is so rooted in the eighties/nineties that it's almost unlistenable. they may be good road musicians but it doesn't show on this album, especially since some of tracks use lamo drum loops "a la stone roses." you would be better off going through the elephant 6 label's recordings or even merge stuff. to be honest, i didn't even find the compositions that scintillating, regardless of the production. chord and change-wise, they're interesting....but that doesn't make the songs good.

5 out of 5 stars The Wondermints Should Be Superstars.......2001-09-09

Brian Wilson was once quoted as saying if he had known the Wondermints while working on the aborted "Smile" project in 1967, he would've taken them out on the road to promote his famous unfinished masterpiece. Well, whaddya know? When Brian hit the road in 1999--2001, he brought this super talented L.A. quartet with him. But, don't mistakenly think these guys are merely a backing band. The 'Mints are the real deal. Tunes like "Proto-Pretty" and "Libbyland" display a knack for song craft rarely seen these days. Jangly guitars, McCartney-esque basslines and layered harmonies fill out spacious arrangements. Infectious melodies stick like glue, ensuring repeated playbacks. Listen to "Fleur-de-Lis" and "Tracy Hide" then just try to get the melodies out of your head. You can't. These guys are super-cool retro musicians who deserve a large audience. Unfortuneatly, they can't get arrested in America. The reality is that the Wondermints are simply too clever and too good to fit into uptight radio formats. What a shame. In a perfect world they'd be superstars. And hey, how 'bout giving 'em some bonus points for their contributions to the "Austin Powers" soundtrack! Check 'em out.

3 out of 5 stars Wondermints Rock.......2001-08-21

I found out about this band from an English friend who's been listening to them for a while. I went out and got Bali and really dug it. I had to go out and get Wonderful World Of and Wondermints right away. I find this one to be the lesser album of the three, lacking the cohesion in the songlist found in Bali and the funky beats of Wonderful World Of. This is still a great album though.

5 out of 5 stars Been compared to Pet Sounds--aren't you a little curious?.......2001-01-08

Only a few months ago, people were gladly paying $35 for the Japanese import. Now it's still an import (English) but at $12.99 you'll never make a better buy. It doesn't sound that much like Pet Sounds (maybe "Tracey Hide" is vaguely like "Caroline No"), but it will bring you bliss every time you listen. You may have heard that the Wondermints were Brian Wilson's backing band on his recent Pet Sounds tour. But their own music is not an homage to the Beach Boys--they definitely have their own identity. I recommend visiting their website and reading their story, along with the quotes from reviews of this album. I hope that will convince you to take a chance. This is one of those rare perfect albums. And, since they haven't released a new one in a few years, maybe your interest will help get them recording again.

5 out of 5 stars Guess They're Not Dumb.......2004-11-07

The Wondermints manage to convey all the zaniness, energy, experimentation, and, yes, childlike wonder of the 1960s and 1970s without any of the lazy, druggy self-indulgence that occasionally marred the astral travels of those decades. This album, like Todd Rundgren's "Faithful," pays homage to beloved and influential music, though in this case the music draws heavily from cult favorites, overlooked jewels (like Brian Wilson's sublime "Guess I'm Dumb"), or completely left-field choices like "Barbarella." Prepare to be entertained--and maybe find some soulmates.

5 out of 5 stars Power-Pop....Pure and Perfect!.......2001-06-18

The best 'cover' album ever made! The 'Mints preform simply stunning versions of some of the best, and for the most part obscure, pop songs ever made. Highlights are the obscure Turtles song "Love In The City" and the seldom-heard Stories song "Darling". Now available as a much less- UK import, there's no excuse for you to not add this to your collection NOW!

Album Description

Reissue of 1991 Christmas album. 'Lisa Mychols, along with those Wondermint guys, has created a quality Christmas oriented collection that's on par with some of Brian Wilson's & Phil Spector's finest moments. Lisa not only writes the songs but paints Christmas as something almost seductive. Plus, it's one of those rare holiday albums you'll want to pull out anytime of the year simply because the quality of the songwriting transcends the occasion,' - Jordan Oakes of Yellow Pills. Includes one bonus track, 'Lost Winter's Dream' (Karaoke). Rev-Ola. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't fear the Xmas.......2006-05-31

If the concept of a "holiday" album makes you want to barf, I feel your pain - I usually hate them too. This album is not that kind of schlock, not by a long shot. What LM is doing here is nothing less than bringing new life to the mega-cheesy concept of a Christmas album - putting a sunny, sparkly California wash of sound over these incredible songs that sound like long-lost 60's classics, and that just so happen to be about Christmas. (Except for Jack Frost - I have no idea what that one's about but I suspect it's Judaic in nature because a) klezmer and b) sung in Yiddish.)

If you like pop of the baroque, clever, infectiously hummable kind, you owe it to yourself to check out this album. Within minutes of hearing the first three tracks I was in love - and I rarely have that experience with any artist. (Even ones I end up loving take several listens to the entire album before I can even start to get into it.) Trust me - you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Magic starry sounds.......2004-10-20

I've followed the Wondermints (and met 'em a few times), ever since they played my friend Scott B's birthday party about 10 years ago. And of course, now Darian, Nick, and Probyn are part of Brian Wilson's "Smile," one of the most anticipated (and long lost) albums in history. They also tour with him. So a few Amazon clicks one day led me to this Lisa Mychols album. It's ostensibly a Christmas album, but it has been on my CD player nonstop, and this is only October (and I celebrate Hannukah)! Buy this, play it often, and please don't rip it onto P2P systems -- these talented artists deserve better than that. I also understand that Lisa Mychols has a new release coming in Nov. '04, and I'll be looking forward to hearing that too. And buy every Wondermints album you can get your hands on. One day, you'll be able to say, "I listened to them way back when...." Peace ... - Bri

5 out of 5 stars Why wait?.......2004-02-04

Even though this is a Christmas CD no reason to wait. Lisa's voice is like a smooth Chocolate milk shake. Goes down good and you never have enough. This girl is gonna be a superstar!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-04-02

Lisa Mychols sounds beautiful with members of the Wondermints. Lisa can sing, write, and play extraordinarily well! This album is in the style of Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and of course, the Wondermints. If you enjoy them, or enjoy any melodic, well-written, well-played pop, you'll love this! It doesn't get any better! Sounds great any time of year!

5 out of 5 stars More great pop for ANY time of year!.......2003-03-07

If you bought the Wondermints' "Mind If We Make Love To You" last year and need a fix of "new" material (hard to believe this CD was originally released in 1991 - sounds so fresh and new), this is the CD to get! Never mind that this is billed as a Christmas album - you could put this CD on at the pool in the middle of July and still thoroughly enjoy this. Add to that Lisa Mychols' tenderly seductive voice (and her great looks on the jewel case) and you have a winner!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Covers.......2004-09-29

This is a fantastic collection of unusual covers. The album consists of absolute power pop (songs such as "My Friend Jack") mixed with a few lounge pieces ("Don't Go Breaking My Heart"). Personal favourite is "Barbarella", a sappy psychedelic song. This is defiantly worth purchasing if you like bands such as jellyfish, beach boys, floyd. In fact the wondermints have spent the past couple of years working with Brian Wilson on his new Pet sounds and Smile tours/albums. Also checkout the wondermints "Bali" and "Mind if we make love to you" albums (these albums consist of their own tracks and are brilliant).

4 out of 5 stars This is actually a great cover album.......2004-08-13

There is a mistake of some kind going on here. The cover displayed is for the group's great first album, titled simply Wondermints. Wonderful World of the Wondermints is the group's follow-up album, which consists entirely of cover versions. Either way, both albums are brilliant, and I strongly advise you to disregard that previous, completely puzzling review.
The first album consists entirely of originals, and is one of the most solid power pop albums I've ever heard. The sond dissed previously, Carnival of Souls, is actually the closer, not the opener, and is in fact a super-catchy rocker. The rest uses the likes of the Beach Boys, Beatles, Elvis Costello, Left Banke and Velvet Underground as influences, yet still comes up sounding fresh. If you're a fan of any of these artists, you will love this album. I give it *****.
The second album is almost as good in its way. Cover albums are usually not a good idea, but this is a great example of how to do them well. The group makes interesting song choices, and brings them fresh life. Heck, they even have the audacity to cover one of their own songs. The opener, the Monkees' Porpoise Song, is a surprise stunner. Other artists whose songs get a novel approach include everyone from Brian Wilson to Paul Revere, Burt Bacharach, Pink Floyd, ABBA, the Turtles, along with some more obscure but fascinating choices. This album is great fun and full of quality. It stands up well to repeated listenings. Good luck finding these albums now, but if you do, you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars YA SHOULDA BOUGHT IT WHEN IT WAS ON BIG DEAL.......2000-09-09

See that...now it's only available as an import, now that Big Deal Records (NY, USA) is out of business...and you're kicking yourself for not buying it earlier...it's probably worth the hefty import price if you're a completist...but I say pick up "Wonderful World of" and "Bali" first...sure, "Proto-Pretty" shoulda been a huge hit, in a better world...but let's face it, musically, it ain't a better world when suburban white kids are listening to rap music instead of pure, sun-drenched pop...

      5 out of 5 stars The DNA is pretty . . ........1999-11-30

Proto-Pretty is fantastic & terrific, its excellence is almost scientific. The song gives its soul to you. It sounds like songs you have heard before, but you can't place what they are. It's a pocket symphony. The rest of the record is pretty good, as well -- especially Carnival of Souls. So good to see you, nice to see you, hope you're doing well . . .

5 out of 5 stars This CD is azure blue crystalline pop magic........1999-08-15

The Wondermints self-titled debut album is one of my all-time favorites. The lyrics pull at the imagination without leaving one feeling juvenile or dirty. The music is pure magic. If you are not too self-involved and/or if you like the the Trash Can Sintras, you will love this album.
