Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

This collection of four compact discs...are worth their weight in GOLD! Barry creates visual moods for each film he scores...romantic, sentimental, action, adventure, suspense and mystery...the list could go on. Strings, brass and lush-velvet arrangements overlay each cue in his distinctive style of legendary scoring...we have ~ "John Barry:The Collection", Silva Screen's release traces 40 years of film music, featuring "The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra" ~ conducted by Mr. Nic Raine (outstanding)..."Crouch End Festival Chorus" ~ David Temple, Choir Master...perform 56 selections, over four hours of symphonic suites with a full orchestra sound...all individually wrapped-up into one neat package...just the way "film-score-buffs" like 'em!

Must ask the following to take a bow ~ James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), always in their pitching, Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Nic Raine (conductor, arranger, orchestrator & associate producer), a tremen!dous asset to every project he undertakes...and the man who made it all possible...a legendary icon always leading the way in film scoring ~ JOHN BARRY!

3 out of 5 stars Should be titled Great End Credits Themes.......2007-04-05

Okay, so I thought I was buying "Great Movie Love Themes." I was familiar with the list, so I thought I would be getting the perfect compilation of melodies. Wrong. This CD should be titled, "Great Movie End Credits Themes," because four of the 12 selections are End Credits music, the stuff no one wants to listen to as all the technical information rolls at the end ot a movie (you know, exit music). The trouble with End Credits is that few carry the actual love theme music or they carry only a small snippet. Most End Credits music is boring. "The English Patient," "Shakespeare in Love," "Sabrina," and "Braveheart," are all End Credits music. Don't expect to hear predominant love themes in these particular selections for which the movies are known.

On the plus side, "Unchained Melody," "Somewhere in Time," and "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," are beautiful renditions. And the End Credits music for "Sabrina," is better than expected. I'd give "Unchained Melody," "Somewhere in Time," and "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" five stars, "Sabrina" four stars and the other eight selections two stars.

Just be aware when you buy this album that you are not getting exactly what is described. You have to read the fine print on the back of the CD cover.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mood Music! .......2006-02-27

I love any movie themes, especially the unsung tracks such as the music for opening or closing credits. This is a terrific CD and keeps me happy at work!

5 out of 5 stars movie themes.......2006-02-18

This CD is one of my new favorites. The music is just beautiful. Very relaxing soundtracks for in the car or at home.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully romantic.......2004-02-10

I really enjoy listening to CD for everything it has. The mixture of cinema movies makes it more likeable for they're films that most movie-goers will be able to relate to, in one way or another. Just say "Romeo and Juliet" and I'll think Nino Rota.
A personal favourite would have to be "The Heart Asks Pleasure First" (The Piano) but "Rose" (Titianic) follows close behind. The suite, "A Time For Us" (Romeo and Juliet) brings tears to my eyes and "Somewhere In Time" is a lovely ballad. For any other lovers of romance, whether it be in movies or in music, this is one cd that you are sure to like.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Listen.......2003-01-28

Some familiar favorites from great movies. A good cd to have for entertaining because everyone recognizes the tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

5 out of 5 stars A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant interpretation of some of the finest movie scores.......2006-11-01

I have had this CD for over 10 years and still love listening to it. In particular, his rendition of "On Golden Pond" makes you think that you are sitting on the banks listening to the peaceful rippling water.

The CD includes famous movie scores from "Schindler's List," "ET," and "Casablanca," but you might be surprised how much you enjoy the score from "The Firm" and other movies whose music were much better than the movies themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Moody music.......2000-02-04

Very mellow piano solos, perfect for inspiring your dinner date to cling to you hoping that you will defend her from the heartless world.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Outstanding Album.......2007-02-28

This is probably my favorite Manfred Mann album and one I highly recommend. Great tracks, outstanding production, solid execution all contribute to a must have recording!

5 out of 5 stars Somethere in Rock and Ethnomusic.......2006-01-14

This is not the best album by Mandfred Mann, but probably it`s most original and less predictable. Here Earthband used the samples of African ethnic singing and of traditional instruments. And it was years before releasing of the albums by Peter Gabriel and Deep Forest. So Manfred Mann was a kind of Columbus in this area of modern music.
Album is devoted to South Africa`s political problems in the 80s. Now situation there is quite different (and the problems are much more sophisticated and difficult), but epic "The Redemption Song" still impresses me by its mix of ethnic singing, rock energy and Rick Wakemanesque keyboards solo by Manfred Mann. Another hit of album - "Eyes of Nostradamus".
Album contains concept peace of songs and music - "Afrika Suite". Probably you would find something interesting for you in other tracks (read all reviews).
The album got scent of pop music of the 80s - electronic keyboards, loops, but if you like the manner of playing by Manfred Mann - you would like this album - distinctive sound by Manfred Mann`s Earthband is here.

By the way, I`ve got European version of this CD, without "Runner" and "Rebel" (they were included as bonus tracks on remastered CD "Criminal Tango"). Single versions of "Redemption Song" and "Nostradamus" are differ from the album cuts. In single version of "Redemption Song" you would hear Earthband with female lead vocals.

If you like this "somethere in Afrika" version of Earthband - then try next CD "Criminal Tango" (1986) - with polished and dynamic AOR sound.

5 out of 5 stars Manfred Mann's Best Ever Release.......2005-06-01

If you are a Manfred Mann's Earth Band fan, this is the ultimate disc to own. The One Way Records edition is totally different from 90% of the other editions currently out there. The cd was first released in europe & had a different song list on it. The One Way Records edition faithfully recreates the U.S. record release. The songs are in a totally different order & the two best songs on the cd are LEFT OFF the european edition (Runner & Rebel). This gives the One Way Record edition a totally different feel from the get go. Mann's rendition of Police cover 'Demolition Man' starts the cd followed by 'Runner' & 'Rebel'. 'Runner' was his tribute to the 1980 olympics. 'Rebel' is one of Mann's best songs & is only availible on THIS version. As if these three songs aren't enough to melt your mind, he follows them with an Al Stewart cover of 'The Eyes of Nostradamus'! Mann then follows with some of the most stunning work he ever did, an African tribal music medley of songs that spanned the entire B side of the album. These songs give you insight into Manfred Mann's homeland & country & his pride in his African heritige. This is one of the VERY FEW albums out there that you can play straight through with absolutely no let down. I love 'Solar Fire', 'Nightingales & Bombers', 'Roaring Silence' & 'The Good Earth' as much as anybody but 'Somewhere In Afrika' is a whole different game! Prepare to be stunned.

4 out of 5 stars Earth Band gets back on track.......2002-07-26

In my opinion, I felt the Earth Band really started going downhill after Mick Rogers left the band. The band started to become more commercial, making me miss such albums as Solar Fire. Somewhere in Afrika was originally released in Europe in '82, but the American version, released in 1983 on Arista was the one the featured the hit single "Runner" which is not featured on the earlier version. Why I thought the Earth Band was redeeming themselves on this album is the interesting use of African sounds and rhythms to their sound. It's not unlike Paul Simon's Graceland or Peter Gabriel's So, released some four years later (1986). Also, really surprising, is to still hearing Mann using his Mini Moog on this album, unheard of by everyone else in '82. Given that Manfred Mann was born in South Africa (but residing in England, for obvious reasons), this album is more or less focusing the problems of his country of birth, in this case Apartheid and the injustices inflicted on the blacks by the ruling Apartheid class. I am really certain this album did not endear too well to the government at the time, but I hadn't heard anything about it either, so I'm just speculating. There's a few cover songs here including Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Al Stewart's "Nostradamus" (called "Eyes of Nostradamus" on this album). Other highlights here include "Third World Service", the title track, "Tribal Statistics", and "Africa Suite". It was becoming normal to hear pop mixed with African sounds by the mid 1980s, with albums like Graceland or So, but I think Somewhere in Afrika is one of the more interesting pop/African music albums of the 1980s I have heard.

3 out of 5 stars Favorite song is not in the remix cd from Germany.......2002-04-11

I mainly bought this cd for the song "Runner",one of my all time favorite songs.Runner is NOT on the reissued cd from Germany!!!I should have looked closer before ordering. It was on the album(which i still own)so i assumed it was automatically on the cd...
