The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The # 1 Progressive Rock Album ever !.......2006-06-03
possibly the best Saga album out there..........2006-05-12
Starting off exactly where Images left off, the band blows the listener away with Don't Be Late. That track alone is worth the whole disc, but wait there's more to come. In fact, all the songs are out of this world as the band manages at the same to stay true to their progressive roots and incorporate some of the radio friendly elements with the traditional song structure and keeping their songs under 5-6 minutes in length.
My other personal favorites are Help Me Out and Careful Where You Step, but once again, all of the songs are really of the highest quality - it's hard to believe the disc was released quarter a century ago.
The following year Saga would go on and release their most famous Worlds Apart that features my personal all time favorite song Wind Him Up that is very close to Silent Knight in style with the rest of the songs on WA leaning towards a new path the band would choose later on (progressive pop comes to mind) and stay with for the rest of the 80s, eventually returning to their roots in the 90s yet failing to match the quality of their earlier albums.
So there you have it folks, the album that should not be overlooked by you, progressive melodic pompous rock lovers.
Enjoy it!
Silent Might.......2005-01-23
As with most bands or artists with something to say in their initial years, Saga surely had someting to say and play from the get go and for several albums afterward. In "Silent Knight", Saga was dripping with potential yet they were inches away from expressing the true spring/summer of what they could really pull off, which they did on their next release "Worlds Apart".
"Silent Knight" doesn't have too many moments you will want to skip past, but I'm willing to bet that the parts that you do decide to skip past will eventually egnrave its marks upon your brain only because they are, in the end, just interesting or nice to listen to only after you have digested all the other "really really good stuff" off of this release.
Dear lord, make it stop!.......2004-12-21
Wow. This is quite unpleasant. Horribly cheesy, overwrought, and just plain embarrassing. And to say that Gildenlow has ripped this guy off in any way is just plain wrong. For one thing, they sound nothing alike, and second, Gildenlow is about a thousand times better, with a much smoother tone, way more versatility, and much much less cheese.
Prog took a really nasty turn for the worst in the 80's, and this is a prime example. Go buy "The Perfect Element". It's a masterpiece. To say that any part of it is even remotely ripped off from this tripe is an insult of the highest degree.
Better after repeated listenings.......2004-07-04
The majestic rock-waltz "Time to Go" probably best exemplifies this album as a whole: it's slow 6/8 tempo disqualifies it from being a hit single, and its 4:20 playing time hardly qualifies it as an epic, but its symphonic sweep and disciplined songcraft are as pleasing to the ear now as they were then.
Dedicated Saga fans will point you to "Don't Be Late" (chapter two of the bands "saga") as an album highlight, but I personally find it to be garden-variety prog; i.e., a bit plodding until the instrumental section finally gets the thing going.
The other song highlight is the power-rock gem "Compromise", but this album is not so much about individual songs as it is about a musical experience from beginning to end. In fact the strongest highlights of the album lie *within* particular songs, like the opening strains of "Too Much To Lose" or the butt-kicking ending of "Careful Where You Step".
Saga's first five albums display the band's musical journey from art to pop; their subsequent Worlds Apart album was their biggest success because the art served to give substance to the pop. In Silent Knight, however, the pop served to provide restraint and focus to the art, which leaves this album somehow grander and less dated.
If you are new to Saga you will first want to pick up Worlds Apart and then Images at Twilight (in reverse order if you are already a longtime prog fan). After those you will be ready to hear what this album has to offer.

Customer Reviews:
Great start and finish..the in between tracks are variable.......2006-09-21
This album eventually sold over a million copies and can still be found for sale in used record stores and on E-bay - usually the copies are well worn from having been played so often.
Sadly RD has not seen fit to transfer the entire program to CD.
Instead collectors must track down the material scattered over several CD's released by RD and some released by Sony Music Special Products.
This CD presents the original opening and closing tracks from the album ("Joy to The World" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing") both introduced by a spectacular fanfare that helps bookend the collection. (Of course originally if you played through all 4 LPs the bookend would be nearly 3 hours apart!)
There is also a Volume Two of this disc available separately containg several more tracks from the original album.
The tracks here from the original collection include the opening two selections ("Joy To The World"; "O Little Town of Bethlehem") and the final two ("It Came Upon a Midnight clear" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.") These are all spectacular!
The rest of the disc is variable. There are other digest tracks featuring The Ambosian Singers ("O Christmas Tree", "What Child is This?" and "Silent Night" although the last track is mis-identified: It is listed as being performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Peter Knight. Though Knight DID record this carol, the version here is by The Ambrosian Singers.)
The rest of the disc ranges from pleasant ("Ding Dong Merrily on High", "The First Noel") to tracks that are just in the wrong style for this collection (Lynn Anderson's "White Christmas", The Stylistics' "Sweet Little Jesus Boy") to downright awful (ANY track by the Fireside Singers!)
Those in search of the rest of JMFCT here is how you can assemble most of it:
(Record One, Side One): Carols for Chorus (with the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Peter Knight)
"Joy to the World" & "O Little Town of Bethlehem" from this CD.
"Deck The Halls" & "Away in a Manager" from Volume Two of this CD.
"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" & "Angels We Have Heard on High" from the RD 3-CD collection CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE YEARS. You can also obtain all 6 selection from the Sony Special Products CD called JOYOUS CHRISTMAS.
(Record Two, Side One):
Richard Benson's CHRISTMAS SUITE FOR ORCHESTRA from the RD 3-CD set JOY TO THE WORLD (released in 1994)
(Record Four Side One):
German Carols - not available on CD.
(Record Three; Side One and Two)
Highlight's from Handel's MESSIAH on the Sony Special Products CD titled REJOICE! MESSIAH HIGHLIGHTS
(Record Four Side Two):
French Carols - not available on CD.
(Record Two; Side Two): Carols for Organ and Bells featuring Leslie Pearson, organ; The Westminster Brass; The London Bell ringers; and John Paice, carillon.
The First Noel - available on O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL from Sony Special Products
Good King Wenceslas - available in the RD 3-CD set THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS
Ave Maria, O Come O Come Emmanuel & Christmas is Coming can be found on YULETIDE CLASSICS from Sony Special Products
Carol of the Bells is on the RD 3-CD set JOY TO THE WORLD mentioned above. It can also be found on the RD CD called REFLECTIONS: O HOLY NIGHT.
(Record One; Side Two): Carols For Chorus (with the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Peter Knight)
"O Come All Ye Faithful" - from Volume Two of this CD
"We Three Kings" & "The 12 Days of Christmas " from the RD 3-CD collection CHRISTMAS THROUGH THE YEARS (mentioned above.)
"O Holy Night" from Volume Two of this CD
"It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" & "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" from this CD.
