From roots rocker to songwriting impressionist to sonic adventurer, the musical progression of Joe Henry resists category and defies expectation. The album-opening "Richard Pryor Addresses a Tearful Nation" is Henry's most audacious move to date, as his smoky voice channels the comedian's tragic spirit while a saxophone break from free-jazz titan Ornette Coleman provides achingly poignant punctuation. The rest of the song cycle ranges from the sophisticated atmospherics of "Stop" (adapted by Henry's sister-in-law Madonna into her hit single, "Don't Tell Me") to the insistent funk of "Rough and Tumble." The production by Henry and Craig Street gives the music plenty of room to breathe, augmenting the organic interplay of guitarist Marc Ribot, pianist Brad Mehldau, and bassist Me'shell Ndegeocello with bittersweet string arrangements. Though there are echoes of Van Morrison in "Mean Flower" and the Band in "Cold Enough to Cross," Henry is less a classicist than a restless visionary.

On Dashboard Confession's fourth album, Christopher Carraba welcomes listeners back into his emotionally claustrophobic world, where relationships are minefields, women are brittle and self-absorbed, and every cloud has a pewter lining. But all this is only fodder for his runaway id, as he deconstructs every encounter, giving us evidence of the pain and betrayal that lurks behind every corner. Finding a home somewhere between the positive punk of Green Day, circa "Time of Your Life," and the stream-of-consciousness poetry of the early Counting Crows, this collection is more musically coherent than Dashboard Confessional's earlier albums. Gil Norton's production has taken the band to new heights, allowing the music to have as much grit, substance, and dynamics as the lyrics. The anxious expectorated sputum of "Am I Missing," is an existential assault on your very sanity, with its fretful drumming and spectral chorus, but this album doesn't sound just that one apprehensive note; Carraba is equally at home with the sparse, acoustic ballad "Ghost of a Good Thing" and the folksy rocker "Carve Your Heart Out Yourself," which could have been lifted from a Buffalo Springfield album. By giving voice to the thoughts that go bump in the night, Carraba gives vulnerability and sincerity a good name again. --Jaan Uhelszki

You're chasing the ghost of a good thing!.......2006-07-06
This is the album that defined Dashboard Confessional as a "band." I loved the other DC albums, where it was just an acoustic guitar (sometimes drums and bass) and Chris Carabba, wearing his heart on his sleeve on every song. So this album made me a little nervous, wondering if I could still feel that passion with a full band. The answer...of course! This album is breathtaking, and the drums are excellent, guitar work of John Lefler is amazing, and the harmony vocals are perfect. Lefler has a style that sounds so lush and beautiful and compliments perfectly with Carabba's. The feeling of this album is less raw than the previous, but even with all of the extra instrumentation, it is still Carabba's voice and lyrics that make this album truly great. From "Hands Down" to "Several Ways To Die Trying," DC has entered into a list of great bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Counting Crows that feature great music, vocals, and better-than-most-band's lyrics. My favorite songs are: Hands Down, As Lovers Go, Carry This Picture, Bend and Not Break (my favorite song on this album), Ghost of a Good Thing (a raw, acoustic song that is very heartfelt), and Carve Your Heart Out Yourself. Each song has a different sound to it and there is no song on here that you will want to skip. Because of this album, the sky is the limit for Dashboard. Also, what makes this album truly worth buying is that is has an enhanced limited edition DVD of DC playing R.E.M. covers from their album "Automatic For The People." It's so good that I immediately bought that REM album. DC is here to stay, so sit back and enjoy!
This is what music is supposed to be........2006-06-12
Powerfully written. Raw, unfiltered human emotion. It doesn't get much better than this. Definitely one of the greatest CDs ever written. If you knew Dashboard before this album... forget what you know!! This album is actually good. Yeah I agree with Kenny a lot of emo these days is just lame and uninspired. Look at Taking Back Sunday, Funeral for a Friend, and Brand New.
But then there are gems like this album, Thursday, Thrice, The All-American Rejects, one From Autumn to Ashes album, and Poison the Well. The emotional content in emo is unmatched by any other genre and that's what makes emo the best. If I'm sad and I want to cry are you gonna make fun of me for being human? You gotta be a pretty meek person if you would. Or if I want to scream at the top of my lungs with Poison the Well with tears in my eyes? (who's the whiny wuss now Ken?)
Anyone that still likes Green Day obviously doesn't know what real music is and therefore should not be allowed to review music. They were decent back in the day but have made enough mistakes to really suck now. Mainstream lame-os. If you were to call me a lame emo kid you would be wrong. Some of my favorite stuff is just downright brutal freakin hardcore!! And to tell you the truth I don't just like emo/hardcore I just like really well written music. Even a couple pop songs here and there. I just tend to favor emo because... well for all the reasons mentioned above. "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. I think she and her music stink out loud but that song is actually well written and it has a good messege you can't deny that. So who's opinion is more valid? Someone who listens to *shudders* Green Day or someone who listens to GOOD MUSIC no matter what the genre.
If you've made it this far on the page you obviously like this kind of music. Just swallow your pride and buy it. This is one of the few CDs you will NOT regret buying if you're a fan of emo or good music in general. Very few bands have put out a CD this high of quality. Very little bad is to be said about this CD. Not perfect but here's a quick breakdown...
Choice tracks:
Hands Down
Bend and Not Break
Ghost of a Good Thing
Am I missing
So Beautiful
If You Can't Leave it Be, Might As Well Make it Bleed
Several Ways to Die Trying
The other tracks are not bad but those are the best ones. Overall a 92/100 for A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar.
raw and gorgeous.......2006-03-28
If you haven't noticed already, Chris Carrabba wears his emotions on his sleeve. I love this album, and the first track (hands down) is my favourite song ever. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it and bought the album immediately after without hearing any other DC songs. I soon went back to SAR and TPYHCTFTM and now that Dusk and Summer is out nobody can deny the genius that is DC. This review is long overdue.

Metal/Death/Power/Thrash etc= WOW!.......2007-03-31
This CD Rocks! from beginning to end. I just found out about this band per chance reading reviews of CD's. I have been into Mercenary, Nevermore, Opeth, Dream Theater for awhile, this band is right there with them. Who says that Metal is dead? Some of my favorite tracks are the following: The Illusionist, Mind Machine, Dreaming 24/7, Carved Stone..just to name a few. I used to hate growling vox, but since Opeth has opened my mind to it as long as the music kix butt...then I always give it a chance...well this CD is definetly worth giving a chance if you love METAL!!
Finally a melodeath band with great growling and clean vocals.......2007-03-30
Scar symmetry's latest masterpiece entitled Pitch Black Progress is a fusion of soaring guitars flesh searing drums, wonderful death growls and clean vocals awesome guitar solos and truly outstanding keyboards if you don't like this something must be wrong with you this album has anything a true fan of melodic death metal and metal would want to end it buy this album you wont be
disappointed one last thought to resist is to not exist .
Neither 5 stars nor the word best can describe this album.......2007-03-13
Where are these guys from? This music is unbelievably GREAT. The musicianship shown on this record is top-notch.
I previously saw the promotion banner on myspace that says this music is for fans of In Flames and Soilwork. And that's not totally correct. I think Scar Symmetry is WAY better than the present In Flames and Soilwork.
Strongest vocal and growl and flying solos make this album undefeatable.
Highly Highly Recommended.
it will not dissapoint.......2007-02-12
this is easily one of the best metal CD's ever released. i swear, i get goosebumps from it on every song. i was a huge fan of their debut album symmetric in design, i found their lyrics to be thought provoking and their drum and guitar work to be a template for how metal should be made. since hearing their two albums i measure other bands up against them. easily one of the best metal bands to emerge out of swissmissland. the kaleidoscopic god will leave you slack jawed in awe and with the hair on the back of your neck standing up. the vocals are incredible, transitioning from a gutteral growl to one of the most melodic voices ive ever heard. the guitar and drum work is stunning and fresh. yes, i hear a lot of influence from other bands such as soilwork and dreamtheater, but only in the way of this is what soilwork and dreamtheater wish they sounded like. an amazing album from start to finish. GET IT!!!!

where did these guys come from?.......2006-11-17
this is a superb first effort from Scar Symmetry. Jonas Kjellgren, who was the vocal powerhouse in Carnal Forge, now showcases his guitar skills. this band would be a welcome addition to your collection if you have Soilwork and Fragments of Unbecoming in your collection or if you are a metalhead.
Great Stuff .......2006-08-06
Just found out about this band from a friend I heard the song REBORN, and was blown away. As a huge fan of the melodic Deth, I was hooked to this band right away. The Heavy riffs, fast drumming, and vocals are really easy to get into. Both clean and Growling vocals on this album are awesome!!! I could go on and on about how much I love this band, but I'll tell you that if you love metal, then this CD is for you.
A solid debut..........2006-07-25
I first heard and listened to SS with their second album Pitch Black Progress (which rocks). I like their newer stuff so much that I bought this one. It is a solid debut, but unless you love their second album, you probably won't like this one a whole lot. The vocals are a little too unpolished for me (both the clean and growls). Musically, this album does showcase the enormous progressive metal potential they have. All in all I think they are a great band to support, and look forward to their 3rd album.
Good but could be better.......2006-07-19
It seems everyone compares SCAR to SOILWORK. SOIL was great at Natural born chaos, everything after that sucked. SCAR seems to have gone in a better path of where SOIL tried to go. This album to me has 5 good songs: 1,2,3,5,7. The rest of the album seems to be filled with FILLERS, just something to give them a complete album. I recommend only if you are in the need for a band that has over shadowed the NEW soilwork. My opinion is that SCAR has a better sound and playing ability than the new soilwork, so there is no comparison between the two.
Impressive debut if not completely original........2006-05-21
Well, what have we here? Scar Symmetry is made of members from various other entities including Theory in Practice and Carnal Forge. Before I had a listen to this, their debut album "Symmetric in Design", I'd read a few positive reviews about it, but I didn't really know what to expect. What it's turned out to be is very much in the vein of Soilwork, but with much more of a technical death metal side to it.
For anyone wanting to give the album a listen, I urge you to listen to more than the first 20 seconds before making up your mind, as the first moments sound something like Iron Maiden. It's a strange opening, since the rest of the album doesn't sound anything like it. Soon enough we are dished out some seriously shredding technical guitar work, awesome powerful drumming and fantastically brutal guttural vocals.
But this really does sound like Soilwork, including having clean vocals mixed with screaming and shouting vocals. The only thing that makes it sound any different at all is the added keyboards and extra technicality due to some very impressive guitar wizardry. So should Scar Symmetry be written off as a clone? Normally I'd say yes, but I have found "Symmetric in Design" to be far more enjoyable than anything Soilwork have put out in a long time. Check out track 2 ("2012 - The Demise of the 5th Sun"), to see how tight and brutal these guys are. The little sci-fi keyboard additions add depth to the album without ever taking centre stage. The death vocals are some of the best I've heard in a while, the solos are fantastic and the drummer is like a machine.
Unfortunately, the album does lull around track 6 or 7, losing a bit of steam, but overall I'm very impressed with "Symmetric in Design". If they didn't sound so blatantly like Soilwork, I'd give them a really high score, but I can't ignore it so I'm going to go for a very solid 4. Maybe with the next album, they can get their own sound and create something truly breathtaking, as the talent and enthusiasm is abundant within the ranks. Impressive debut!

GREAT! CATCHY TUNES!.......2006-07-25
I will never get bored of listening to this CD...it has the best tunes ever...so catchy! It is really their best work so far!
Worth The Extra Money for DVD..........2004-11-07
I bought this CD rather blindly. I had only heard a few of Dashboard's songs... pretty impressed, I must say. Then, I saw the DVD version in the store, and it had Dashboard, covering R.E.M.'s Automatic for The People, with Michael Stipe on the DVD. Unrefuseable offer.
So I get in the car. I listened to it, stunned. It was just fantastic, and it's one of my favorite albums. There are only a few albums I can listen to the whole way through, and this is one of them.
When I got home, I watched the DVD. I was amazed yet again with how talented Carraba and the band actually were at covering another band, especially such a great one. And then, at the end, Stipe covered Hands Down, and sings with Carraba, and it's well... pretty freakin' sweet. So five stars. Most Definitely. Hands Down.
Absolutely great! Yet, not better than forerunners.......2004-08-25
Chris Carraba brought out another great CD. Honestly though, I do believe that his forerunners are better. He got more instrumental and moved away from the acoustic side of things. "Bend and Not Break" is an excellent track; it features a great intro, while "Hands Down" is the actual Radio Release from the 'So Impossible' EP's acoustic version. I do think though that this CD certainly does belong to my favorites!
YAWN, get over it.......2004-07-31
I must say, after hearing so much about this band, I was dissapointed to hear such a mundane set of songs. Sure, it's better than a lot of the cd's out there, in fact after returning 3 cds I would say this is the best one of what I got, but all the songs are so similar you might as well just get one single.
I may not be easy to please, but I expected more being a fan of their type of music. The vocals put me to sleep and the repetitive tune is not much better.
A lot of people seem to like it though, so I recommend listening to a couple of their (non-soundtrack) songs and then choosing whether or not to buy it.
simply put, I found it boring.
good to relax to.......2004-07-24
when i first heard the song "hands down" i fell in love with the song, and when i bought the album, i was surprised that the tracks were alot slower than its first track. i think it is good to chill to, but most of the songs are slow, so dont expect anything very "rockin". chris cabarra is a very good songwriter& the meodies are very pretty. the dvd is pretty cool too. it has the guy from rem &they do some duets. its cool to see old& new come together. overall i give this album ****

Wonderful.......2005-07-06
Beautifully done album, packed with music. Just want to listen to it over and over again.
A mark so fine, yet still a scar............2003-06-03
Madonna's brother-in-law, JH has his original song, "Stop" on this cd, which she turned into the country-pop of "Don't Tell Me." His version is a slinky, slow to resolve, eastern-influenced shuffle worthy of many, many, many repeated listenings! The second best song, "Scar," is a soft, yet shattering lament followed by 3 minutes of silence, and then, a rocking 10-minute jam session as a hidden track! If you're new to JH, I suggest "Fuse" as your first purchase, as the songs on "Scar" can get long-winded, fast.
Love Joe Henry.......2003-04-11
I have this album and man, do I love the song, "Stop." When I first heard it, I thought "one wonder Madonna wrote "Don't Tell Me" great songs, great musician and hopefully Madonna can sign Joe Henry to her label
Late Night Music.......2002-12-07
He is Madonna's brother-in-law, but he sounds more like Tom Waits' baby brother. This is late night lounge music for those who like it dark, moody and Ornette Coleman dissonant. Coleman, in fact, plays on the album which, in itself, puts a million miles between this and what is played on your radio these days. Henry's earlier album Trampoline is still an enduring favorite. But, like Waits, his degree of difficulty increases with each record. As a result, he doesn't stick every landing. But it is always a delightful and, frequently, gratifying treat to listen to him try.
Hmmm.........2002-03-24
First off let me say that this is a decent record. A previous reviewer did say that you would probably find yourself going back to listen to a few select songs on it, but not the whole album. This is probably true. The record sounds great. It has some very talented musicians. But something is missing. I think that something is songwriting. I've always thought Joe Henry was a guy too clever for his own good and his last two records fortified this in my mind. Short Man's Room and Kindness Of The World were very good records but I think Henry either got bored or figured he painted himself into a corner. So with Trampoline he started mixing things up (and don't get me wrong....Ohio Airshow Plane Crash is one of my favorites). I think it worked on Trampoline but now it's starting to get a bit tiring. Believe me, it still sounds good but something's not quite there. Joe Henry would probably say that's intentional and maybe he'd be right. I think he suffers from a malady that I also think hit Elvis Costello at one time: Tom Waits Syndrome. Waits pulled one of the most brilliant moves in music in his transition from his 70's to his 80's records (of which I enjoy both eras). I think Elvis Costello (and Henry) fell in love with Rain Dogs and thought "I can do that!" Both have used Mr. Ribot on albums and these albums were usually stylistic departures. Oh well...I'm sure hipsters will jump on and say that I either don't get it or am trying to constrict Joe Henry into playing one style. Maybe I am. But as Clint Eastwood said in Magnum Force: "A mans got to know his limitations."

Another Masterpiece.......2004-02-05
Scar Tissue is one of MANY amazing songs on the "californication" album! Gong Li is an incredible song, with an atypical chili pepper twist! I've been a fan since "mother's Milk" made its debut and "Scar Tissue" and "Gong Li" are just a couple more reminders why i LOVE the RHCP! If you like "Scar tissue" and "gong li" then i recommend you buy every cd the RHCP have released since "BloodSugerSexMagik"..... some of my favorite singles since are...... Under the Bridge.... I Could Have Lied ...... Soul To Squeeze..... My Friends ...... This Velvet Glove...... Californication ..... Scar Tissue..... Around the World ..... Parallel Universe.... Easily ...... Savior..... Other Side .... Aeroplane ..... Road Trippin .... Tear Jerker..... Transcending .... Pea ..... that's just to name a few!! No Joke!! these guys knwo what they are doing! THEY KNOW THEIR MUSIC!!!! Californication is by far their best album yet... even better than " By The Way" but Californication is great so go buy it...and if you liek it...go buy the singles...because there are some b-sides that didn't make the cut that will be on one of their greatest hits some day!
More than I Expected.......2001-06-20
I heard Scar Tissue on the radio, and not yet owning Californication as my friends say it sucked, I decided to try out some of their songs. I really just wanted this song, but upon listening I noticed the other tracks, Gong-Li and an Instrumental version of this. Both were good and more than I expected. This single is a good introduction to Red Hot Chili Peppers.
This song rules!.......2000-01-01
I actually bought the whole Californication CD, but I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, so I am reviewing this song. The first time I heard it, it was one of my favorite songs. I liked it even more the more I listened to it. BUY IT NOW!
LOVED THIS TUNE!.......1999-11-10
"scar tissue" was one of the best new songs i've heard this year! I never really listened to RHCP before, but this CD made me a fan. i can't to hear more from this band. rock on, you guys!
This album rocks........1999-10-25
I loved this album with all the nuts in the world

HUGE Chili Pepper Fan.......2006-12-14
I enjoy this album very much. I am a RHCP fanatic although sometimes I am in the mood for light relaxing music and this fits perfectly. So, I get to enjoy the best of both worlds with this excellent tribute to their work. Might I add that Under the Bridge is beautifully composed here, and is my favorite track of all time and on this album as well.
Not-so-loud Chili Peppers' songs.......2006-10-30
First and foremost, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a hard rock band. Nobody is going to buy this album in order to hear the Chili Peppers- that would be stupidity. There are only two reasons anybody would purchase this album:
1. You love the Chili Peppers' music and You want a change of pace.
2. You love listening to string instruments (such as the violin).
Buy this album if you love the Chili Peppers' music and you love strings. That sounds like a no-brainer...
enjoyable.......2005-03-10
I realy happend to enjoy this CD. I just bought it recently and every time i listen to it i feel like its the real thing because its so similar. I Love just relaxing to this cd. I think it is worth hearing.
Just my opinion.........2005-01-19
..but I just feel indifferent about this CD. I bought it thinking it would be an orchestrated-type stuff, which it is but I was hoping for something I could relax to. Whenever I hear the music in this CD, I think of weddings. Don't get me wrong, it's a good CD, but just not what I was expecting (which was a more relaxing kind of orchestration).
oh man.......2004-06-29
i bought this cd when i went looking for the last elusive cd that was missing from my rhcp collection(freaky styley, you should buy that one too)...i ended up walking out with this one as well and i rocked it all the way home with my windows open. this isn't an orchestral arrangement, it is a true to the original quartet: every solo, (almost) every fill, and every vocal que is present. The basslines jump from Persiani's prodigious upright (bass) and u can almost picture flea bouncing around. this work brought a whole new breadth and life to th emusic that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end; and for that, i applaud the string quartet.

one of the best.......2005-02-04
Never shut a door without opening a window, seven channels is gone but an even better band has risen from its ashes. The Vanished is one of the best bands in my collection and there is not 1 song on this cd that i dislike, its just great from start to finish. The songs will leave catchy lyrics in your head. This is a must have cd if you want fresh and talented rock.
Wow........2005-01-12
I first heard this band in July and haven't stopped since :) They are AMAZING, able to pull off all sorts of styles from slightly angsty-teenish to full-fleged emotion and rockin' spiffness. Best songs? Latchkey Princess and Anesthesia Winter.
Buy it. Now.
Solid from start to finish.......2005-01-12
Dallas, Texas band The Vanished was one of the brightest spots of 2004, breaking the general monotony of most of this year's releases. The Vanished picked up where Seven Channels left off - vocalist Kevin Kirkwood and guitarist Dallas Perry sound better than ever. With the addition of bassist Justin Young and drummer Phil Helms, the band released their first six-song EP in 2003, and soon found airplay on 102.1 The Edge. Although still gaining recognition beyond Texas, this up and coming band is excellent. This album marks the first "official" debut, adding an enhanced portion to the previous 10-song LP.
