Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly, December 7, 2001
Languidly gorgeous ballads, evokes a timeless L.A.... Raymond Chandler, Julie London and Randy Newman... hot duet with Rufus Wainwright.

Billboard, January 19, 2002
The album is a rich and emotionally searing work of striking stylistic diversity... torchy... reflective, a uniformly superior collection.

Album Description

A spectacular follow-up to Volume One in this instrumental series featuring 15 songs that have never been on a U.S. CD before. But this set isn't just for collectors, but also for listeners. All recordings have been digitally mastered from the original master tapes & are in True Stereo wherever possible. Includes a full 8-page booklet with detailed liner notes on each song.

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

3 out of 5 stars Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10

I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift.......2007-06-20

I just received this CD as a gift. Julianna's voice is sweet and sultry and a pleasure to listen to. I can highly recommend this CD. You might also take a look at the soundtrack to the movie 'Open Range' which she wrote and sang the 'Ending Credits' song for. Many people have bought the soundtrack for that reason alone.

5 out of 5 stars This should be in everyone's CD player!.......2003-09-13

I was turned on to this disc from Julianna's song on the Open Range soundtrack (fantastic!) and had to find out more. After a listen to this CD I was hooked. One of the most talented singer / songwriters I have ever heard. Produced by the just as talented Ethan Johns! What a combination. I hope they do more together.

4 out of 5 stars Ripe, witty, and endlessly playable.......2003-09-08

There is not a bad track on this CD, as far as I'm concerned. It's melodic, eclectic, evocative, and funny, too. Also a bit addictive. Such a rare combination you wonder why you don't get it pressed on you by all your friends. Maybe people didn't know where to file it, because it feels as much jazz as pop. In case that was the problem, I'm writing this review: buy it,--if you like music, you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars Even punks like it! This is a 10 Star.......2005-01-19

After listening to the free downloads, I knew that I had to have this CD. It's been over 2 years since I first purchased this. I take it with me in my 'road-trip' bag of fav's. Recently on my way to a convention in Palm Springs with a few punk rockers in the vehicle with me, and popped Helmut in. There was silence, but no sneering or joking. AFTER the CD finished playing, I got,"what, and who was that"? I like it, where can I get one? Well needless to say, I've probably purchased 4or 5 more for the new found fans. I keep coming back to try to find more out by Helmut Stein. Won't give up on them!

4 out of 5 stars Smooth yet edgy...........2003-03-11

The first time you listen to On Return, it feels a little rough. But give it another spin and you realize that it's not rough, it's very sultry (especially The Kiss and Slow Suicide), but keeps the edginess that makes the band such a pleasure to watch live. All of the songs conjure up images of smoky bars and steamy car windows. An innovative evolution in jazz/blues, yet rock influences peep through every now and then. You can't help but believe that they actually enjoyed recording this, which sets them above 95% of the other bands making music today. I look forward to what the future might hold for Helmut Stein. I believe it will be very bright, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a pre-wrapped slice of American cheese..........2003-02-08

So glad they finally came out with their CD!! Been to clubs to hear them live and it's an incredible experience and the CD sounds just as cool. R Scott-n-The Boys really know how to rock the Casbah and now that the CD is out, I can finally be a member of the band in the privacy of my own car.

This is a release from the sadly defunct See For Miles label, first launched in the vinyl era, and responsible for many fabulous compilations and career retrospectives. See For Miles comps, to the best of my recollection, predate Rubble, Pebbles, etc., so it was a cutting edge endeavor at the time. This, sadly, is not one of the best things to come out on SFM. The album cover gives you the expectation of rather heavy German prog. What you get, actually, is hardly even psych. Stylistically, you can hear the Turtles and Squeeze in the music. Mostly pleasant, but not very significant, and certainly not up to the promise of the banner "Classic Psychedelia!"

3 out of 5 stars Band with lots of promise, not too much delivery.......2000-06-14

Recorded under the auspices of Troggs' manager and producer Larry Page on his Penny Farthing label, and produced by Troggs bassist Tony Murray, Octopus were one of the lesser known and lesser accomplished British acts of the psychedelic era. Led by brothers Paul and Nigel Griggs who were bassist and guitarist/chief songwriter respectively, Octopus began life as a twin guitar foursome releasing the single "Laugh At The Poor Man b/w Girlfriend" to a rather disinterested public. Before beginning their album recording sessions the band's configuration changed to guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums. Whereas "Laugh" had hinted at a meaty sound with its use of wah wah and the inclusion of a short yet tasteful guitar solo, the remainder of the band's recorded output was much more closely related to the debut single's b-side, which was rather a tossoff, pedestrian in nature, and lacking any real drive. The band's album does contain isolated moments where the band seemed to have ideas, such as the opening track "The River" (the band's second and last single) with its insistent guitar riff and tasty solo by Nigel Griggs, plus Beatlesque vocals. Unfortunately, the rest of the lp is much less interesting. "Tide" a 5 1/2 minute endeavor, complete with Queen-like vocals, echoed piano, and guitar and organ riffing in unision, offers some hope of inspiration, but even it is never completely satisfying. The title track offers a heavy guitar riff, but never really gets off the ground, and many of the other tracks are simply too forgetable to comment on. Only for completists who simply must have every album available from the psychedelic era, this long forgotten item would probably be best served by remaining so. A 3 star rating is rather benevolent for the album's content. It is, however, the complete works of Octopus, and thus of interest to completists.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant psych and prog blend.......2000-03-27

I'd loved this CD, but I expected a heavier sound (the cover promises it). For my delight, I've found gems of pop psychedelia: "Rainchild" is my favourite, but "Summer", "Thief", "Tide" and "Laugh at the Poor Man" are pretty good too. Only "Council Plans" and "The Queen and the Pauper" aren't so good as the rest. But it worths the money, surely.
