Todd Snider's fifth disc opens with a pleasant, chugging roots-rock sing-along--the title track--then kicks into a jokey folk number, "Vinyl Records." In a tongue-twisting tumble of a chorus, Snider shuffles through his record collection, name-checking classic rockers and country stars, longhaired hippies and softheaded folkies. The balance of the disc bears out these diverse influences: New Connections is a stylistic smorgasbord, serving up earnest introspection ("Rose City," "Class of 85") and heavy-hearted ballads ("Close Enough to You," "Waco Moon") alongside wisecracking novelty cuts ("Beer Run," "Statistician's Blues"). There's even a taste of clarinet-addled swing in "Broke" and a cover of John Prine's "Crooked Piece of Time," to which Prine himself adds his unmistakable vocal scrape. In all, its occasional flaws--production that's sometimes too rich, arrangements a tad too dense, a couple of middling tunes--don't derail a solid, likable album. --Anders Smith Lindall

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars snider finds his true form.......2003-03-09

On his first albums Todd Snider sounded like the new Tom Petty. There were some promising songs though, like Joe's Blues and Doublewide Blues, that had their own sound. On this new album New Connection, everything fits like a glove. Great songs, easy, laidback singing, beautiful arrangements, a band that has just the right feel for "near perfect" (that is: not too smooth). A masterpiece that reminds me of Eric Andersen's Blue River.
And it's one of those rare records that grow on you: it gets better with each spin.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best work.......2003-01-16

Fans of Todd Snider's previous work are likely to be disapointed. His voice is slow, often unintelligible - like he just got out of bed. Lyrics and wit are not the quality of "Daily Planet" or "Happy." I really want to like this alblum, but "Vinyl Records" is one of the silliest songs about nothing I have ever heard. In fact most of this album is just forced. Looking forward to next album. In the mean time I will spin up Happy to Be Here" one more time.

5 out of 5 stars Todd Snider ROCKS!.......2003-01-04

I tried to pick a favorite song on this CD but I just can't... They are ALL so good. Truly a couple of the best love songs I've ever heard (Anywhere, Close Enough to You). They are just so plain spoken, or sung, and down to earth. Tug at the heartstrings. Speaking of tugging heartstrings, Waco Moon will do that to you - quite the ode to a friend who's gone. A lot of the reason I listen to Todd Snider's music is cause he makes me smile (and sometimes grin), like in Vinyl Records (I've got about a quarter of it memorized and I've listened to it over and over..). I can just see him flipping through all his old albums. Statistician's Blues amd Broke have so much humor and so much truth in them. Both are funny, and not, cause their just too damn close to home. I love singing with Todd at the top of my lungs driving down the road and his songs make that so easy to do. Crooked Piece of Time is brilliant. New Connections just makes me feel good. And of course I'm learning to play Beer Run for around the campfire this summer.

4 out of 5 stars Great surprise.......2003-01-03

I had never heard of Todd until I saw him open for John Prine.
I enjoyed his songs so much that I bought this album and have enjoyed it immensly. Stand outs are, New Connection, Waco Moon
and Crooked piece of time.

5 out of 5 stars new connection - same results.......2002-10-24

Top to bottom this album has it all - makes you laugh , makes you think , makes you want to dance. I can't wait till mainstream finally catches up and the music industry finally recognizes what a gift Todd Snider is and the talent he posseses. His music will inspire you to move something whether it's your brain or your bottom! Check him out.

4 out of 5 stars Celestial Navigations, Chapter V, The Connection.......2006-08-02

If you are a Celestial Navigations fan you will enjoy Chapter V.

4 out of 5 stars CN's best album since Chapter III.......2006-07-22

I've been a Celestial Navigations fan since 1989. The huge delay between the release of Chapter IV and this album, had almost caused me to believe that Chapter V would never surface. Thankfully, that fear was unfounded, and I thought Chapter V to be the best CN release since Chapter III.

One thing that differentiates Chapter V from almost all the rest, is the backing music. Mr. Lewis's signature voice is in solid, if somewhat elderly form, but the music is largely cinematic in quality, with string orchestration and other additions which show how far CN's production ambitions have come since the synthesizer-laden classic, Chapter I.

Which is not to say that synth never appears on this album. "Arranger 5" is both amusing and classic, in that it features Mr. Lewis' quirky wit and nothing BUT synthesizer. But other tracks, such as "Sub and the Bull" and "Letters from the Revolution" feature backing music that seems to be pure orchestra; and much appreciated pure orchestra at that.

As with previous CN albums, Lewis is not pulling any punches, in terms of loving the American Experiment or infusing tracks like "Santa" with an honest adoration for Jesus Christ. Far from New Age, Chapter V is more like a return to the country age, when neighbors sat with neighbors on the front porch, communities pulled toghether for the good of the community, and one could place his hand over his heart and recite the Pledge without being accused of warmongerism, jingoism, nationalism, or any of the other tired -isms.

Touching, thought-provoking, Chapter V is thoroughly in the spirit of the previous four albums, and all I could say after hearing this one is, "I can't wait for Chapter VI!"

    5 out of 5 stars Review - Celestial Navigations.......2006-02-01

Just as with their other albums, CN hits the spot with their newest offering. I know of no other spoken word albums with such vivid and descriptive passages.

5 out of 5 stars down with Tom.......2007-05-16

i've always dug Tom Scott's amazing talent for communication through music... this album is very funky and offers a great groove for those who love jazz of this type... he was one of the first jazz artist for me to be introduced to in my childhood along with the Brecker Brothers & Stanley Clarke... i might contribute a major part of my life to him for i picked up saxophone at age 11 and now am a music major.

i learned of this album just recently through my professor in Jazz History class.... right on... rock on.... it's all about that JAZZ!

    5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any better!.......2004-04-04

This is Tom at his best. Wonderful tunes, inspired solos, and layers of beautiful woodwind overdubs - coupled with the perfect band. I've probably only listened to it 1000-2000 and it still sounds as fresh as the day it was made. George Harrison's contribution is worth the price alone. It's well worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Tom Scott!.......2002-08-10

...Recorded with a group of WONDERFUL New York session players, including Bob James, Eric Gale, and Ralph MacDonald, to name a few, this set has a different sound than your typical Tom Scott/LA Express selection. This album relied less on the fusion (which I grew to hate) and more on a melodic, even tempo'd jazz style and moves through different moods and sounds beautifully. Pretty much all the music here is of high quality and a joy to listen to but to me two numbers stand out. The title song, "New York Connection" is a mellow piece that almost makes you feel like someone walking the streets of New York window shopping on a Sunday afternoon. That is the only way I can describe it. It is just a beautiful piece of music. The other is "Appolonia." This is an interesting song that features Scott on soprano sax & flute, and George Harrison on slide guitar. What makes this interesting is that this song got airplay on FM rock stations, at least here in Los Angeles. Remember, back in 1975 FM rock stations were not like they are today, driven solely by money. Back in the early 70's it was ALL about the music, and when a DJ heard something he liked he played it. It would lead to some wonderfully interesting sets to listen to. Since Harrison was a soloist here it began to be heard on the FM stations.

Anyway, I would recommend this to any jazz fan looking for a great musical experience. If you were a hugh Tom Scott fusion fan then you may not enjoy this as much, but it would be a great addition to your collection.

"Move over, Buddha Bar - Zen Connection is ready to take the mantle of sublime chill-out music." -3D WORLD

Fused with a rich tapestry of tribal beats and a calm, contented breeze of hypnotic vocals, Zen Connection 3 celebrates Sunyata, the middle way of Zen. 27 chilled-out tracks take you on a downtempo journey, unwinding their way from the tropical soundscape of Oi Va Voi's "Od Yeshoma" to the dangerously alluring "Fragile Wind" by the UK's Nitin Sawhney. The first disc offers subtle and refreshing ethnic sounds, a hypnotic blend of ambient electronica spiced with sounds of the East. The second disc is more energetic and upbeat, merging elements of trance music with the melodious flavors of Indian instruments. Follow-up to the best-selling Zen Connection and Zen Connection 2.

This collection of songs is a celebration of all things beautiful in nature and in ourselves. Songs one, four and six have the theme of water, but song five, "In A Magic Garden" could not be complete without water. Song seven, "Spanish Plaza At Sunset", would have to have a fountain. And, it's no stretch to say, as we are mostly water ourselves, that all life in us responds to water, sunlight, and sunlight's reflection that becomes moonlight. We are water beings on a water planet, with the flow of love making some mysterious sense of it all. Enjoy the moonlight. Enjoy the water. Enjoy the music.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nicholas Demonstrates His Brilliance!.......2000-01-25

I'm not exactly sure if Nicholas is considered by many a grade "A" player, but he's my favorite! Maybe that's an unlikely choice but if you listen to this album you start start to see things my way. His playing on "Digga Digga Do" is worth the price of the cd itself. Art Hodes does some pretty amazing things also! Another great track to listen to is "Lover Come Back To Me". Anyone familiar with the song knows it's usually performed as a ballad but here they swing from beginning to end! This allows some great solos by the entire quartet. If you like this album another great one to listen to is "All Star Stompers". This has Nicholas in the more traditional New Orleans setup(Trumpet,Trombone,Guitar..ect) If you love good jazz and want to hear some great clarinet playing..A MUST!
