5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome into this place - The lighter side of Gospel.......2007-01-06

I am always looking for a good gospel album to keep my mind on the Lord. after purchasing the WOW 2004 CDs, I heard "When I enter your rest" by JoAnn Rosario, I knew I had to get her album.

This album is superb. Because many of the songs are so light and have an 'easy-listening' feel; it really lulls your soul into rest...both spiritually and physically songs like:
10/10 - The Introduction "Welcome into this place"
10/10 - "Sing of your goodness"
10/10 - "My Desire";
12/10 - "With all my heart" - can you tell this is my favorite!
10/10 -"God"

And then; there are mildly upbeat songs that helps to put a pep in your step songs like:
10/10 - "Life so wonderful"
12/10 - "Oh Lord Your Love" - this is my fav. upbeat song!!
9/10 - "Never the same";
8/10 - "Thanks be unto God",
9/10 - "Open My eyes"- 9/10

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Anointed.......2006-06-23

For me, the true measure of an album's greatness is how it sounds after it reaches the midway song. After this point, the songs usually sound thrown in, flung together and lacking in quality. I had never listened to this lady before and I am very picky about my music (everthing has to measure to Richard Smallwood). However, this is one of the most beautiful albums that I have ever listened to. FROM BEGINNING TO END - and I emphasise THE END. Interestingly enough, I believe that her most powerful song is the second last song on the album simply entitled "God". The music is beautiful, her voice is outstanding and the anointing on this song pulls you into the very throne room of God. "Never be the same", "Thanks be Unto God", "Sing of your Goodness" and "Psalm 27" are absolutely phenomenal. She doesn't do alot of theatrics with her voice as many artists do which sometimes, instead of seasoning the song, actually overpowers the message. She knows just when to release the powerhouse and when to pull back. The TRUE meaure of an artiste.Take it from the pickiest person this side of Planet Earth. This is a "must have" to any TRUE Christian and TRUE gospel music collector.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful!.......2006-05-09

If you long to be in God's presence and need something to set the tone for your day - THIS IS IT! Lyrics are what really make me love a song and these lyrics are TRULY about WORSHIP! I actually found a way to translate the Spanish lyrics to English-Cuando Reposo En Ti is sensational! It is so powerful in Spanish that it makes me want to learn the language so I can sing the ad-lib too! My absolute favorites are I Hear You Say, God and Open My Eyes. I find myself singing When I Pray and My Desire in my head throughout the day because those words are what I'm feeling. I thank God for Joann's ministry and how its touched my life. I pray God continues to bless her as she recovers. This CD is proof that the devil can't mess with God's ANOINTED!! OH by the way - Saciame Senor - one of the best songs ever!!!!!!!!! I can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD.......2006-03-08

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional!.......2006-02-24

Was always a big fan of Grant Lee Buffalo, "Jubilee" totally rules, and Grant Lee on his own rocks too!

"Like A Lover" is one of the simplest songs, but conveys so much feeling, it knocks me out everytime I hear it.

"Mobilize" the beat always makes me think of Portishead, such a cool song

"Spring Released" is one of those songs that's timeless. It's like religion to play this track coming into the sunny season.

Do yourself a favour and buy anything of this exceptional musician that you can get your hands on. C'mon Grant Lee, give us another!!

4 out of 5 stars rhythm + romanticism + melody = Mobilize.......2005-07-14

"Epic masterpiece..." "Channeling John Lennon" These are descriptions from other reviews, both puzzling to me. There's nothing epic about this, nor is there the slightest resemblance to Mr. Lennon -- who composed music in an entirely different vein. This is a personal album, sometimes quiet and sometimes hypnotically beat-driven. As far as I can tell GLP played and sang everything himself. This is like his earlier Ladies Love Oracle, but juiced up with rhythm. Acoustic guitars and electric keyboards predominate, with the sythetic percussion.

Mobilize doesn't really hang together as a unified piece. It is more a collection of songs, most of which are very good. The best of them are dreamy, entrancing, and soothing. Computer-sequenced beats give a pulse to many of the tracks. The lyrics are specific enough to be enticing but vague enough to allow your own interpretation. But take advantage of the free amazon.com download of See America and you will hear for yourself the strengths of this Grant-Lee Phillips effort. It will tell you ten times more than I could ever say in a review. Besides, there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. And you and I will never completely agree on which is which. At least give this a try. Was See America Grant-Lee's twist on Simon & Garfunkel's "...all come to look for America"? It seems so to me, and I think it is equally clever and anthemic.

See America, Sleepless Lake, and April Chimes showcase Phillips' ability to write a haunting melody, which is something of a lost art. See his Ladies Love Oracle CD for more of the same.

The other free download, the title track, is probably the least enjoyable tune on the album. It sounds a bit off-kilter, with its minor chords and allusions to war. The other tracks are much less depressing. Spring Released is positively bouyant, as is Beautiful Dreamers. (My grandmother used to play the classic old song Beautiful Dreamer, which GLP deftly incorporates into his own new composition.)

GLP is not trying to push the envelope or pump you up or sermonize. He seeks to entertain, by presenting a little piece of his contempative romantic soul. Treat yourself to some high class pop. Get this album. You can catch glimpses of GLP as the "town troubadour" on the first season of Gilmore Girls, too. That's how I was first introduced to his music.

I lost my first copy of this CD. I can't imagine how. It never left the house. But I had to buy another, because I knew I would miss it. I think you might feel that way about it, too.

5 out of 5 stars Only 500 times over..........2002-11-08

I first heard Grant-Lee when he was part of Grant-Lee Buffalo. A friend made me a tape of "Mighty Joe Moon" about six years ago. I hadn't really thought about Grant-Lee until I saw the Exile Follies tour with Kristen Hersh, Grant-Lee and John Doe. I was so impressed with Grant-Lee that I had to hear more. I downloaded parts of songs from this album and listened to them over and over. I had to buy the album. So I bought it a week ago and have been listening to nothing else but this since. It's on most of the day at work and then on in the car for four or five songs at a time. I truly love this cd, it's a good thing that it's not on tape or the tape would be worn out already.

There is something really catchy about the songs that make you want to listen to them over and over. They also get stuck in your head and you just have to listen to them! "Spring Released," "Sadness Soot" and "Beautiful Dreamers" are the main ones that I keep singing over and over in my head. "See America" has a wonderful romantic sound to it that makes you want to take a road trip. I thought the lyrics seemed really cool at first, then I read the lyrics in the liner notes and realized that they are even cooler than they sound, they are quite poetic.

If you've never heard Grant-Lee, I've learned that you're missing out. He's definitely up there with my faves - PJ Harvey, Kristen Hersh, Tori and Liz Phair. I will definitely be adding more Grant-Lee Phillips to my collection as I can afford it.

4 out of 5 stars Move to this........2002-08-26

Grant Lee Phillips is a top-class singer-songwriter who has a wealth of experience as well as two or three truly great records behind him, and somehow you just knew he wasn't going to disappoint with Mobilize. It finds Phillips embracing a more polished, modern sound than past efforts - accentuated by the classy, breatless pop of the opener 'See America' and similarly impressive 'Humankind'. As the title suggests 'Love's A Mystery' is all mystique and intrigue with Phillips sounding eerily like David Byrne, and is exactly the kind of left-field tunesmithery on the human condition at which he excels.
The real gem here though is 'Sadness Soot' - dizzying in it's magnificence and showcasing just how remarkable Phillips' voice really is - a master of phrasing, mood and expression. As with his Grant Lee Buffalo albums, just when you think you're in for more pop thrills, we get something edgy and challenging like the title track to throw you off the scent. The second half of Mobilize is engaging and interesting, if a little less consistent than the first (though that's a common complaint these days). Still, the bonus track 'Sunday Best' is a rather jaunty closing treat.
For listeners that like their music to be innovative, fresh and just a little outside the square then Mobilize will fit the bill nicely.

5 out of 5 stars Even Better By Himself?.......2002-08-06

Having been an enourmous fan of his work in 'Grant lee Buffalo', I was anxious to hear what he could come up with by himself. After hearing 'Ladies Love Oracle', I was expecting something the same, but what I heard really delighted me. I love Ladies Love Oracle and I love Mobilize.

Grant-Lee is simply one of THE GREAT singer-songwriters (of all time in my oppinion), and now he's taken the genre into cool new territories. If you liked Grant Lee Buffalo, you won't have absolutely NO objections with this album, despite it being quite a bit more 'funky' (for want of a better work) with its electric drums etc...

Grant-Lee's strengths have always been his song writing ability and his voice and these things both come through strong with his 'new sound' (which is equally as appealing and beautiful as it is different to the 'Buffalo' sound).

I was fortuneate enough to hear him live (twice) in Brisbane (australia) in May '02 and it was trully amazing. He is such a talented guy.

I'm hanging out for another solo effort, and until then, Mobilize will keep a huge smile on my face

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album The Vandals Ever Recorded.......2003-03-16

This "joke" is one of the best albums of the 80's. The reissue here is still drop-dead hilarious, but the addition of "Play That Country Tuba, Cowboy" it is a veritable "milk through the nose" laugh riot. Just like with post-punk pranksters like El Vez and The Dead Milkmen, neo-baby-punx of the 21st century are most likely too serious about a genre that died 20 years ago to see the genius here. Maybe one day, they will lighten-up enough to realize that their "punk" is just mainstream fluff, and outrageous, out-of-bounds albums like this one will be the ones to endure the test of time.

4 out of 5 stars Cowpunk at its best.......2000-12-07

first of all, congrats to the real punks who actually knew this albums original title (Slippery When Ill). When I first heard this, I did not comprehend what it was about. But I kept it and listened to it every now and then. As I got older, It finally hit me, albums like this one are about the musicans ability. Yes, this album sounds like the Vandals are making fun of country but, I think they were trying to experiment with each of their own styles--to see what they could do. This is why they and other bands from the 80's are still going. I wish the re-release of this had kept the original title, and Shi'ite punk. There was no need for the last two songs. Be a Smart Punk, be wary of Punk Light Bands, and death to top 40 and egotistical bouncers. Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors. Keep it alive!

4 out of 5 stars Punk geniuses strike again!.......2000-10-03

Punk legends the Vandals prove again why they're better than the rest. 10 hilarious punk-a-billy tracks that throw water balloons at country music while playing it. The lyrics are brilliant as usual on a Vandals disc, but this disc isn't the Vandals CD you should start with. Vandals fans who REALLY get the Vandals will appreciate this clever record. Best tracks include: "Goop all over the phone", "Susanville" and "Elvis Decanter". Great CD for Vandals fans, just make sure you're familiar with their other work or you'll be left scratching your head like Cheez-it was. Vandals rule!

1 out of 5 stars Vandals? Who are they this isnt them...........2000-07-20

Well I thought this Vandal Cd was gonna be alittle better than it is.This is one of the worst Cd's I have ever heard in my life.My Dog could have made a better Cd then this I am very sad that they made this Cd.Lets just all hope that they dont do another like this. All there other Cds were good. But this one BOMBED.

4 out of 5 stars Goop all over the punks.......2000-05-21

Shame on the poseurs for not paying attention. Yes, this is a re-issue of the semi-legendary "Slippery When Ill" with a couple of changes. The Vandals aren't the clown princes of punk for nothing, so if you don't get it maybe you better stay home. Joey and the fellas never did a better job of laughing at themselves and at the pseudo-punks who cried about the band going country. Yeah, it's missing "Shiite Punk", but what's in a tree-fort, anyway? Buy it if you're not a sheep.

I've been a HUGE fan of Logisitcs since the spacejam EP, and when I heard a rumor about 6 months ago that Logistics was coming out with a full legnth album, I was excited to say the least. Logistic's last big hit, "Blackout" was (in my opinion) the last song he released with his older, and more epic style. Most of the new material on this album consists of the roller variety...with more subtle drops, bouncing basslines, and smoot vocals. If somebody expects a CD with nothing but slamming tracks similar to "Thunderchild" or "Together VIP", they could be disapointed... Some standout tracks include: "Everything is Illuminated", "Beatbox Master", and "City Life". I gave this CD 4 stars because this CD doesnt contain the type of tracks that made Logistics so famous, but it is something new and fun to listen/dance to... A must have for any true Logistics/Hospital Records fan!

    3 out of 5 stars I love-d MDC!!!!.......2002-07-26

I was always upset when my favorite punk bands broke up...Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Circle Jerks etc...Hearing MDC's later tunes included in this "best of" CD Im kinda glad those bands called it quits ....All the aerly MDC classics are there...John Wayne was a Nazi...Corporate Deathburger...My Family is a little wierd...plus some songs I kinda got into off their later works, but the NEW songs on this CD I couldve lived without. Also one new song Ive heard "hail satan" wasnt on here...I actually liked that tune...all their new songs are tired poorly recorded half hearted attempts at the early MDC greatness. If you dont have any MDC and want to get one Id recommend their first cdMillions of dead cops...the songs sound better and all every one of them totally rock...but this is a sampling of their 20+ year career. I LOVE MDC, but I kinda wish they had broken up in the 80's too....but I cant take anythin g away from their early stuff MDC was one of the best in hardcore punk!

5 out of 5 stars ISSUE RESOLVED ON THE EUPHRATES.......2005-06-19

One question I might find among the more difficult in my life would be - which is my favourite Handel oratorio? I suspect that my answer would generally be 'the one I heard most recently', and that, as I write this, is Belshazzar. It is a magnificent thing, a heavenly thing. It has taken me longer than it should have to come to an appreciation of what makes Handel the phenomenon - as a genius, as an artist, as a craftsman - that he is, but I am comforted to reflect that no less a genius than Haydn, at the age of nearly 70 gaining a more thorough knowledge of Handel in performance, was driven to say that he felt a mere apprentice. In his sense of how to pace a dramatic narrative, in his instinct for how to use the human voice in song and above all in chorus, in the matchless flexibility and adroitness he displays at word-setting and in the audacity of his melodic and harmonic effects I can think of nobody who can approach Handel on his own terms.

Belshazzar was not a great success at the box-office, although this may have had more to do with difficulties in the casting than because it was deemed insufficiently biblical for oratorio, which seems to have been the fate of Hercules. It seems to me to be perfectly well described as oratorio in other ways too, with (for one thing) the extensive use of the chorus that we find in, say, Samson but not in Hercules. The one passage that cries out for visual effects is of course the apparition of the moving finger itself. Even here the composer can go a long way with sheer power of suggestion, by the strange unaccompanied violin figure creeping upwards and the frightened brevity of the vocal numbers. Otherwise for me Belshazzar is as much an oratorio as Samson is. It has the same librettist too, the crusty and formidable Jennens, who had also collaborated with Handel on Saul and on Messiah itself. Jennens' full text is not provided, but I think if you read the synopsis first and then follow the work from the headlines to each number you will have no difficulty in catching the words, so clear is the enunciation by soloists and chorus alike. As usual, Handel was driven to make alterations to the score for practical reasons. He had been a little concerned about its length, roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes in this performance, but where he wishes to be expansive he gives us full measure - two arias in Act I scene 4 take well over 7 minutes each. The liner-essay (a good one, by Anthony Hicks) goes into the issue of the version of the score used here, and I personally have no problem with it.

I have no faults to find with the performance in any way. Pinnock is an established specialist, the instruments are period instruments and vocal cadenzas at the end of the arias are kept minimal. Anthony Rolfe Johnson, James Bowman and David Wilson-Johnson are tried and trusted Handel singers and at their best here, and Nicolas Robertson and Richard Wistreich in the smaller parts are every bit as good. The part of Cyrus is a soprano part, taken by Catherine Robbin, and when I thought I heard just one touch of strain in `Destructive War' in the final scene she makes up for it instantly in her superb duet with Arleen Auger in the following number. Auger as Nitocris the mother of Belshazzar has the biggest part, and she covers herself with glory all the way through.

The recording is perfect, and when I saw an aria entitled `Destructive War, thy limits know' near the end I felt a sharp sense of irony in the year 2005. Cyrus, Handel, Jennens, you should all have been living at this hour.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoiyable, but lacking, too........2004-08-16

This 3CD set of George Frederic Handel's (1685-1759) "Belshazzar", from Archiv Production, a division of Universal Music, is proof again that transfer from vinyl to tape to disc brings with it improvements in listening that make the purchase a worthwhile addition to anyone's listening library. Written in 1744, "Belshazzar" is an oratorio in the operatic style that is wonderful oratorio, but lacking the true depth one expects to hear in an opera. London opera audiences of Handel's day agreed, as both "Belshazzar" and Handel's other offering of the period in the same style, "Hercules", were not terribly successful. Instead of the scheduled 24 performances only 16 were given and Handel never offered a full season of oratorio again. The Libretto by Charles Jennens (1700-1773) is, as the production notes say, meant "not only to show the fall of Babylon but to show it as a fulfillment of divine prediction and to confirm the biblical testimony by reference to classical history." There's only one problem, as good a quality as the CDs are, it is not possible to follow the full libretto and the accompanying booklet includes no text, which is a shame. I think the listening experience would have been increased immeasurably if one was able to follow the text of what is being sung. Nonetheless the dramatic narrative is fluid and even, and the English Concert and Choir provide nice balance to the less full vocal passages, as in Disc 3s "Oh Glorious prince", cut 10. There is enough of this throughout to keep one's interest, but disappointing if what one expects is another ""Messiah".

2 out of 5 stars Less than ever...........2006-03-14

I'm a huge fan of BS&T, but not necessarily a huge fan of this album. Not to say that it's terrible. I actually bought it because of two mellow ballads...."You're The One" and "I Love You More Than Ever" -- two beautiful love songs than seemed to fall through the cracks from record buyers. (Larry Willis' funk smash, "Heavy Blue" is also worth a listen as well.) But it seemed that the group was trying to hard to commercialize their sound and the tracks just seemed bland an not as powerful as the BS&T sound of their earlier releases.

2 out of 5 stars Probably the weakest group album.......2005-09-19

First of all I must say that I love this band. I have been a fan since it's inception in '67. Having said that, I have to say that this is the weakest recording in the group's history.

Overproduced, overly slick and sacrificing the group sound in favor of a slick formula contrived to gain the band commercial success. Bob James' touch is all over this recording and it shows.

First of all with the outstanding players in this band, strong soloists and composers, why would James bring in a series of session men. Usually you do that when you're dealing with a group who don't have the experience or the chops to play the charts. That was never the case with this group which had real talent in Tony Katka, Larry Willis, Bill Tillman, Bobby Colomby, Ron McClure and others. Yet here we are with the then standard Bob James contingent of very talented sessions coming in, with James lending his abilities on keyboards (and he isn't as strong a player as Larry Willis) to produce what is essentially a David Clayton-Thomas recording produced by Bob James.

There are a three interesting pieces in this recording and the rest is throwaway material. For God's sake, "Katy Bell"?

The three interesting pieces are the satirical "Hollywood", "They" (the strongest piece on the recording" and "Heavy Blue".

I was truly disappointed with this recording. I don't know whether the group succumbed to strong pressure to try to produce a hit or else, hence Bob James and the heavy production values. Frankly some of the songs came across as canned soul and a tad sappy.

This recording would've been better served releasing it as a collaborative effort entitled "David Clayton-Thomas/Bob James".

    2 out of 5 stars BS&T - More Than Ever CD.......2005-08-18

I am a huge BS&T fan, and was very disappointed in this CD. It was supposedly done in the early 1970's when the band was dolling out hit after hit, but only one or two of the songs are halfway decent. I sort of feel like I've been fed a bad line about this CD, and would not recommend anyone else wasting their hard earned dollars on it.

    5 out of 5 stars ANGELIC VOCALS.......2004-03-05

Angelic vocals? David Clayton-Thomas? No, I'm speaking of the
wonderful harmonizations of the female vocalists that run through this c.d.,
sometimes singing along with Thomas, sometimes
trading lines back and forth. I heard this release for the very
first time recently.(Where have I been?). I think it is as good
as their earlier releases, which came as a bit of a surprise
to me. It is much different, to be sure, but just as good. THEY
intersects a bit of the classical with a funky brass section,
top notch vocals from Thomas,(he is in top form through out), and
great keyboard work. I LOVE YOU MORE THAN EVER agin starts out
with a classical feel, but quickly changes into a country style
tune, highlighted by those angelic voices I spoke of earlier.
KATY BELL features great brass with a piece of dominant
saxophone work, and my, my, those voices. SWEET SADIE THE SAVIOR
is a soulful number, as is YOUR THE ONE, while HOLLYWOOD is "get
down" funk. HEAVY BLUES is just that, heavy blues. They finish
this offering off with SAVED BY THE GRACE OF YOUR LOVE, a hymn-
like tune heavy on the great vocals.(Thanks girls for that touch
of heaven). This is obviously not the classic B.S.&T. sound, but
it is an excellent piece of work nonetheless. I hope you enjoy
it as much as I do.
Thanks, and keep that smile on your face.
    Tom

    4 out of 5 stars it's about time.......2003-10-16

This is a well-done and overdue effort. There are only a few BS&T recordings that have not made the transfer to CD. (I'm still waiting for New City.) This is a little more R&B than many of the band's efforts, but enjoyable nonetheless. I burned my old LP onto CD a few years ago, but this is better. This album didn't do well commercially when it was released, but has stood up well over time. I believe it was their last work for CBS/Columbia.
