Album Description

Romeo and Juliet...Eloise and Abelard...Tracy and Hepburn. These are among history's great romantic relationships, but perhaps the deepest of all romances - in all of American music, at any rate - was the one that was carried on in the recording studio between Billie Holiday (1915-1959) and Lester Young (1910-1959). "Lady Day" and "The President" (they gave one another their nicknames) made a series of "sides," as they were called in those days, that to this day absolutely define love in tune. She was - and is - the greatest of all jazz vocalists. His tenor saxophone style delivered the real Birth of the Cool. Together, they sang and played with an unparalleled sense of intimacy, warmth, and sensuous, behind-the-beat swing, whether the melody was pure gold (like "The Man I Love," "Time On My Hands") or closer to brass ("When You're Smiling," "Back In Your Own Backyard"). Originally produced by the redoubtable John Hammond, and intended first and foremost for jukeboxes, these sixteen seminal performances have been culled from the Grammy-winning 10-CD boxed set Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia, 1933-1944. They also feature vital contributions from, among others, pianist-arranger Teddy Wilson, who served as leader on many of Holiday's record dates, Swing era superstar clarinetist Benny Goodman, ace trumpeter Buck Clayton (Young's cohort from Count Basie's definitive swing band), the sublime Ellingtonian alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, and Roy Eldridge, little giant of the trumpet. But Lady Day and Pres, forever dancing in the dark, make this a musical romance that will never die.

5 out of 5 stars Wow. .......2005-12-31

This is a great compilation. Of course, everyone who knows the comprehensive nine CD collection from Columbia (The Quintessential Billie Holiday) will have favorites that are missing from this selected greats, but this disc is representative of the electric interaction of Lester Young and Billie Holiday. It really does record a musical romance. Songs like "This Years' Kisses" underpinned by Teddy Wilson's piano, Freddie Greene's guitar, Walter Page's bass and Jo Jones' drums are classics. Holiday is the legendary "Lady Day" and Young is her bolster and foil. She simply handles songs, takes them as her own and defines them--musically, emotionally, poetically. Her style is always her own and it's instantly recognizable. Billie Holiday defines rhythm, phrasing, meaning with a poignancy that cannot be matched. Or described. Young is her perfect accompanist. He too is lyrical, poignant, pointedly emotional. So here we have classic settings of "I Must Have That Man," "When You're Smiling," "Without Your Love," "He's Funny That Way," and Holiday's own "Fine and Mellow." There are other collections featuring Lester Young and Billie Holiday, but this one is certainly a respectable cross section. And it also has the added bonus of classic jazz accompaniment by Wilson, trumpeter Buck Clayton, Benny Goodman and other giants of the swing era.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Disc at a Good Price..........2005-01-05

Yeah, this is a really nice disc: it's about the best compilation of the tracks of Billie singing with Pres backing her up. Now, Billie sang with lots of fine musicians, and I'm not sure it's necessary to overemphasize the particular relationship between Billie and the Pres. In any case--as I've said--this is a really nice disc and a great compilation: the sound is absolutely excellent--plus, it seems to me that the producers have cannily increased the volume track ever so slightly, to give the Pres' solos that extra touch: if so, they've done an outstanding job!

A final note on this question of the "Fine and Mellow" track: the track featured here is a studio track recorded on 7 Dec. 1957 as a rehearsal for the following day's live telecast "The Sound of Jazz" (8 Dec. 1957).

The studio track (7 Dec. 1957) featured here is 6:19.

The live telecast track (8 Dec. 1957) is 8:46. (It can be found on Vol. 3, Billie Holiday Broadcast Performances [1956-58] on ZYX Music [Esp label] from Germany.)

5 out of 5 stars Pure beauty.......2004-12-04

I just wanted to disagree strongly with what M.S.F. wrote about the last track on this compilation. It comes from a live CBS TV broadcast, The Sound of Jazz, from either 1957 or 1958, and thoroughly deserves to be included. Agreed that by then Billie's voice had pretty much gone, and Lester was mainly just going through the motions, but the track is one of the last times they recorded together; although technically it's not their finest work, it is nonetheless very affecting.

Actually, it has been reissued a number of times, earlier on VHS but subsequently on DVD and you really have to see it as well as hear it to get the full effect. At one point, Billie turns to Lester with such a look of love; I always find that unbearably moving.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Romance is musical magic.......2003-07-08

Holiday and Young are an absolutely inspired duo for a CD. Two musical legends performing together at arguably both their peaks (late '30's). From "The Man I Love" through "Fine and Mellow" each song showcases the great saxophone sounds of Lester Young with the perfect voice of Billie Holiday. This is a perfect blend, as if they were meant to perform together. The songs create a mellow yet heady atmosphere that it's easy to drift into.
(Warning: don't try to play this CD as background music. You'll just stop whatever else you're doing and listen.)
Such wonderful music is difficult to write about because written adjectives don't suffice to convey the beauty of the sounds.
Suffice it to say that if you are a fan of either artist or want a good introduction to them, this CD is a must.
Also features such luminaries as Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson and Johnny Hodges.

5 out of 5 stars The last rendevous..........2002-09-05

There has been much talk about Billie Holiday's voice. There's the sweet early voice, the mature voice of the later years, drug and whiskey-soaked, with the impeccable timing, and then there is this. Billie Holiday CDs flood my collection, but this remarkable collaboration stands alone as absolutely the finest. Cut after cut, it just keeps coming.
I've been anticipating it since I heard the praises of someone who was at the session, and raved about the melding, emotion and artistry generated between Billie Holiday and Lester Young. This session was a musical pinacle for two legends who were also lovers at their last rendevous. Everyone present knew it was the last, and became transfixed by the magic going down. Billie dug deep and came up with her finest. Buy this now, and be transported by the best of two giants of jazz...

The holidays are apparently for lovers, and Lee Ann Womack presents a few new originals here, including the opening title track, to place things in the proper perspective. There's also a cover of "The Man with the Bag" that's previously only been featured on Ally McBeal: A Very Ally Christmas. Nevertheless, it's on the traditional songs--including never-can-go-wrong usual suspects like "White Christmas," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Christmas Song"--that Womack's evocative vocals come across most memorably. A "big band" album in the vein of holiday offerings from some of the greatest crooners of the '60s, this moves the 2002 Country Music Association's Female Vocalist of the Year even further away from her country roots than her more recent pop-oriented discs did. Accordingly, Harry Connick Jr. shows up to duet with the singer on a version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that seems destined to become a holiday staple, even if it's a bit corny. --Bill Holdship

It Has Some Realy Good Tunes In It. Great For X-Mas..

1 out of 5 stars Lee Ann Womack Season for Romance.......2005-12-19

Her choice of songs are wonderful, and I was going to buy the CD, for my personal favorite, "What are you doing New Years Eve."
After listening to all the songs, I decided NOT to buy the CD as I cannot stand listening to her taking a breath, into the mic all the time. Someone should teach her about not breathing into the microphone, in other words, learn breath control. She has a beautiful voice. I wish her well and I would like to buy one of her CD's. But, the ones that I have heard are all the same.

4 out of 5 stars She hopes you sing too.......2005-12-19

Lee Ann Womack puts the traditional spin back into Christmas music with this old-style country Christmas album. This is one of those “relaxing around the living room after dinner” Holiday albums, when you’re too stuffed to move a muscle.

The most corny (and forgettable) track is the duet with Harry Connick Jr., but apart from that, songs like “The Season for Romance”, “Let it Snow/Winter Wonderland”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and “The Christmas Song” are enough to set the mood for a lazy evening.

Relax with Lee Ann, and sing along if you can, but she doesn’t expect you to dance this time.

5 out of 5 stars Like snow falling softly.......2005-12-15

Lee Ann and her creative team have come up with a lovely
seasonal album.
No rooty-to-toots on this album to jar the
jazzy, stylish, romantic ambiance.
This would be the album to listen to while drinking a glass of wine
and snuggling with your honey on the couch.
Some wonderful arrangements of familiar
tunes. Rich with guitar and piano to highlight Lee Ann's
almost sultry vocals.
Stand outs: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.
Forever Christmas Eve.
A jaunty The Man With The Bag
and a great version of What Are You Doing Christmas Eve.
I was surprised by the non-traditional route she took.
Many of the country artist christmas cds I have tend to
go for tried and true arrangements.
I hope she tackles a cd of the american songbook sometime.

4 out of 5 stars NOT TOO BAD........2002-12-23

She is a country star, right? However listening to this cd you realize that she does not have any boundaries.
She takes a lot of Christmas standards and does not turn them into country standards, but uses some jazz.
Her rendetion of BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE is by far the sexiest version of that song I have heard in a long time. Her duet with Harry Connick, Jr for BABY... sizzles. There is so much warmth and sexuality coming from this song. She uses her very smoky and sensual voice on her version of HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHIRSTMAS. I love the strumming on the drum on this song. On WHITE CHRISTMAS you feel like you are sitting somewhere in a jazz club. She keeps very true to the original by not altering the whole feel of the song. There is also a sense of childness and fun with the song THE MAN WITH THE BAG. The only problem I have with the cd is her version of SILENT NIGHT. It sounds slightly miscued. It seems the music is going faster than her. Then the biggest mistake on this song is the use of a saxaphone. It ruins the beauty and the majesty of this song.
Overall it is a good cd to have for Christmas. She proves that she is more than just country music.
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

For those of us who love the fantastic voice of Oleta Adams this CD will not disappoint you. As with all of her music she delivers a song like no one else can. It is a MUST have for your Christmas music collection. Once you hear her delivery on these songs you will feel like you have received a true blessing, especially from the song entitled "Breath of Heaven". ENJOY!

Oleta has produced a beautiful Christmas CD. The music will be appreciated from the the very young to the very mature. If you like music you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars A must have CD for the Christmas Holiday.......2006-11-20

Oleta Adams gives us another beautiful CD with her personal touch on these songs.

3 out of 5 stars Oleta Adams can sing names out of a phone book and sound great!.......2006-11-15

I am a huge Oleta Adams fan and I wanted to love this CD.

I know Christmas CD's don't have the production budget that a mainstream CD might have. I know that Oleta Adams recorded it at her studio at home and these two factors may have worked against it.

First off what I loved about this CD.

    Track 5
    Breath of Heaven

    Track 7
    There's Still My Joy.

both of these tracks sound like they could have easily been lifted from Oleta's 5 star gospel CD Come Walk with Me. Just Oleta and piano and that magnificent voice.

I did like track 4 I Wonder as I Wonder which Oleta puts her own spin on this timeless classic.

The rest of this sounds like Oleta and her beautiful voice singing to a kareoki track.

I would have loved Oleta to record CD using a live band or orchestra.

Still there is enough excellence on this CD to make this a part of your collection. After all Oleta can never do wrong in my book.

4 out of 5 stars Oleta number 1.......2006-11-03

Only a collection of classics but it's enough to say:"Oleta Adams is fantastic". A dream? Could I sing with her? At least a conconcert in Europe, please!

5 out of 5 stars Pure instrumental magic!.......2007-06-13

The purchase of this CD was highly recommended by a fellow member of Yahoo's "Beautiful Instrumentals Group." Containing several formerly unavailable on CD selections, this album is pure instrumental magic! For example, some of you may recall Monte Kelly's mid-1950s rendition of "Tropicana," from the LP of the same name, and other songs from that collection. They are here at last! I have been waiting since CDs came out to see "Tropicana" and many other "magical instrumentals" from the US and Europe finally appear on CD, and this is the first in a series of new CDs produced by Nick Acquaviva to hit the market that feature these wonderful instrumentals. I highly recommend that anyone who loves classic instrumental check this and the entire series out. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars As good as swing gets!.......2005-11-22

This is the first time i've bothered to write a review for any album or group, but I couldn't skip over this one. this is the BEST swing album I've ever listened to. When the last song on the album comes on I think to myself that this can't be the end already and then I'm sad because there aren't any more songs. As one reviewer mentioned, theres not one bad song in the bunch, they're all great!! They have a very solid sound, the vocals don't steal the show and the music doesn't drown out the singing, a perfectly balanced sound thats addictive in nature. Johnny Favourite has a very smooth sound to his voice and fits in perfectly with the band!! If you like Royal Crown Revue or Big Bad Voodoo Daddy or Squirrel Nut Zippers who in my opinion are great!, then I think Johnny favourite will definitely be your new favorite, it's become my new favorite!! Really, look at all the other reviews, all 5 stars! that says something! Don't pass this albumn by, its the best buy for your money and enjoyment!

5 out of 5 stars Chiming in with the same story.........2005-05-24

As everyone else says, this album is just wonderful from start to finish. My personal fav's are "Motorcycle" "We Still Talk" and "Bessie Smith". But, it's is REALLY true: there is not a bad song on the whole disc; not a very common feat where I come from. However, IMO, the Led Zeppelin song is the weakest one on the album (despite being an Zep fan myself); it's not bad; it just doesn't have as interesting an arrangement as the rest.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!.......2005-02-12

This is just a flat-out great swing cd. Unlike many of the other neo-swing groups, Johnny Favorite's orchestra plays songs in different tempos, different styles, different instrument leads. It's not a cd where every song sounds alike. Better buy it before it's out of print.

      5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2004-10-22

to bad these guys arnt around anymore, they were the best band to come out of canada. Very up tempo songs (and their stage show was even better). Highly recomended.

      5 out of 5 stars Swing, Swing , Swing.......2004-05-18

This is one of the best Swing albums of Neo-Swing era. With very rich arrangements and melodic songs mostly written by his guitarist John Wesley Chisholm with four exceptions Bessie Smith, Them There Eyes, Black Dog and Goodnight My Love, which are very good covers. Johnny Favourite sure can swing. I absolutely recommend this item to every true swing fan.

3 out of 5 stars Guess it's okay...if you really like Dean Martin.......2002-12-17

This hardly pretends to be a Christmas album, but is basically a love song album with a winter theme. I don't know how Rudolph got into the set of basically love songs though. "White Christmas" sort of stretches the theme, but Rudolph stretches it to the breaking point.

Dean Martin qualifies, of course, as one of the relaxed and smooth singers. His relaxed style in fact is rather extreme to the point of (personal opinion) being boring and bland. I almost wonder if he's going to stay awake long enough to finish the song.

I shouldn't be mean to his memory, though I admit that I completely dismissed him from my list of likeable singers and/or actors when he assumed the role of one of my favorite spy heroes, Matt Helm.

I will give him three stars only because I know there are those who will enjoy this album.

3 out of 5 stars Winter Romance Import Style.......2000-03-19

This is an import entitled "Winter Romance". However, it is not the original configuration of the release by Dean in 1959 bearing the same title. It does include all the original songs from the 1959 release and for you collectors out there, it is not the original "ski chalet" album cover either. This import includes additional songs that were not included on the original album such as the hit "On An Evening in Roma". as well as "How Do You Speak to an Angel" and "Solitaire" amongst others. But it is the inclusion of these songs that seem to diminish the original concept of this "seasonal" recording. These songs just don't seem to mesh with the songs from the original "Winter Romance" recording, thereby detracting from the continuity of the original album. It is for this reason the mediocre rating. However, the original "Winter Romance" recording in its orignal format is a five star recording and worth searching out.
