Product Description
A sterling example of Popol Vuh's sound in their prime, and one of their more energetic albums. "Einsjäger & Siebenjäger" is a phantastic mix of rippling piano and fluttering blues guitar solos and cymbal-happy drum crashes. Compositions like "King Minos" and "Würfelspiel" present the latent, rockier side of the band, and are just as much a joy to listen to as the more commonly manifested mellow side represented by "Morgengruss." The side-long title track, featuring all-too-intermittent visits from the beatific vocals of Djong Yun, nonetheless is a sophisticated composition and a piece of simply gorgeous music. This re-release features 2 bonus tracks: "King Minos II" (01:55 min) and "Wo bist Du?" (05:42 min).

5 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Great Find!.......2005-01-06

Wow, do I love this album! I got into Popol Vuh in my never-ending search for great obscure Prog records from the 70's. Popol Vuh sort of fall into that category of "German Art bands that were not really progressive but people called them progressive anyways" (like Can and Amon Duul ll.) Of course that's going by the more common definition of Prog Rock which was really Symphonic Prog (i.e. Genesis and Yes.) Using it's basic definition, this music is indeed progressive, and should appeal to adventurous Prog fans. PV don't sound anything like Can, or Kraftwerk for that matter. Their music is mostly instrumental, sometimes rocks but doesn't "RAWWK," instead being by turns very reflective, gorgeous, spiritual, spacy and uplifting. Fricke was apparently quite religious and that definitly comes through on record, despite the language barrier.

The entire record is just pianist Florian Fricke and guitarist/drummer Daniel Fichelscher, with some (very) occasional vocals by Djong Yun. Together they make some magic on this CD. Several very nice short pieces lead into the title epic, the heart and soul of this record. A long, involving and emotional jam with none of the pitfalls of most 20-minute jams: it never gets boring, and I often hit repeat and listen to it for another 20 minutes. The vocals are just beautiful, if too seldomly used. One thing you will not believe is that the same guy plays both guitar and drums. I scratch my head wondering how one instrument can be dubbed when they mesh so organically perfect that they just had to have been recorded together? On this track you can hear Florian and Daniel yelling to each other in German, probably giving each other encouragement and/or cues. You can even hear them singing along with their own jam. This must have been picked up by the drum mics, because it's way down in the mix and just adds ambience to an already great track.

The bonus tracks are good and the second one features Yun's return. They really should have used her voice more, but I won't quibble. This is a great find and for me it has incredible playability-I listen to it all the time. Recommended for the adventurous. Also great for reading, meditating, or as a late-night or...um..."romancing" CD (you know what I mean!)

2 out of 5 stars Not feeling this one.......2004-01-13

I'm quite disappointed by this Popol Vuh release. Now, I should admit that they are not one of my favorite Krautrock bands, as too much of their output sounds like wishy-washy New Age music to me.

And yes, to my ears, this is more of the same. A lot of reviewers have called this one of Popol Vuh's "harder" albums, but that's a bit of an overstatement. Maybe it's got more of a rock beat throughout, but it's far from being hard. Too much of this album sounds like soft, half-baked, 1970's, hippy-dippy noodling to me.

Musically unchallenging and unadventurous, it almost sounds like it should be the soundtrack to a 1970's California soft-porn movie...Or maybe it should be accompanying a reading of some Rod McKuen poems?

I say avoid this one, unless you're a completist or actually like New Age music. Or John Tesh.

      5 out of 5 stars Pure & Majestic Music!!.......2003-03-10

Very original and i think unlike any of their other stuff. Very loose and organic music. The drums really pound away and we can't forget danny fleischer's intuitive and unique drumming; The guy drums unlike anyone else! Oh if he only got the credit he deserves! Rapid tom fills -smashing away at the crashes and coupled with Florian Frickes intense piano progressions ...the music is very majestic and seems to glorify the human spirit in every way. The last song, 20 minutes in length or so, is really where these guys Rock Out- Its definitely not 'NEW AGE' !!! These guys are pummeling their way to an ecstatic state!! And when I listen closely I could hear them singing and moaning and yelling and they even seem surprisingly swept away by the Power and Intensity of their own creation.. One of my favorite songs of all time is the last one, it has to be heard to be believed! Pure Music, mistakes and all!! The music touches a piece of my heart that no other music seems to get close too! I like putting on their last song REALLY LOUD and just sit in amazement at the beauty and power that the piece of music conveys, it builds, climaxes, builds and climaxes and leaves me with a momentous feeling of what the human spirit could achieve! Great melodies, great theme, great piece of music, period.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......1999-06-29

Hardly anyone in the U.S. has heard Popol Vuh, and most of those that have know them from their soundtracks to Werner Herzog films like "Nosferatu" and "Aguirre". This album, from 1974-75, is the best I have heard. This music is quite beautiful at times. Basically instrumental with occasional ethereal (indeed, angelic) female vocals in German. Piano and jazzy drums predominate, with double tracked electric guitars performing bluesy solos on top. Quiet, meditative passages alternate with majestic crescendos - the music is symphonic in scope and execution. The themes of the individual tracks appear to be spiritual in nature and this quality shines through. A fore runner of modern day New Age music, but much more compelling than almost anything I've heard in that genre.
