The aim was to do for country what Saturday Night Fever did for disco. The result was that bars from Kona to Kalamazoo suddenly had mechanical bulls, and slickers walking around in cowboy hats. You might also pinpoint this as the moment in time when "country" music suddenly went cosmopolitan, paving the way for Garth Brooks. Johnny Lee's "Lookin' for Love" was one of the decade's biggest singles, and this album briefly made a star of Mickey Gilley (whose Texas club provided a home for that alpha bull). Fans of Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, and Bonnie Raitt may want this collection for the tunes they lack elsewhere. And it sure recalls an era. But please don't call it "country." --Bill Holdship

Where were the good songs?.......2007-05-21
I love this movie, and I like the songs on this soundtrack, but, there are some songs that were in the movie that realy need to be on the soundtrack, but, they, for some reason left them out. Such as the intro song, "Texas", by Charley Danials. But, overall, it is a good album.
you made my day........2007-05-14
I have the music on 8track but, haven't been able to play it for years, no 8 track player. Now the music is back. Good customer service.
Great Service.......2007-03-16
Love the sound track of this movie. Takes me back to my
younger days!! Some really good memories! Thanks!
Urban Cowboy Music Lover.......2007-03-10
at last I found my Urban Cowboy music... love the movie and the music
Very Very Good.......2007-02-12
I'm not a country music fan in the least. But I saw this movie at least 3 times and it was superb. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. There are several good artists on this soundtrack like Dan Fogelbert, Bob Seger, Anne Murray, The Eagles, Johnny Lee. Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and a few others. Every song on this ST is excellent. Even if you're not a country music fan like myself, this is one good CD to have in your collection of movie soundtracks.

The sound of the '70s.......2007-04-01
Few albums encapsulate America of the mid-70s as smoothly as Scaggs' 1976 commercial breakthrough. The bluesy-rock roots he sang with Steve Miller and the blue-eyed R&B he recorded since his 1969 solo debut provided a foundation for something more polished and sophisticated. The key was a production sound that took in the elements of disco - strings, horns, synthesizers and danceable beats - but didn't cast Scaggs' soul into slickness. The resulting record grabbed dancers by their velvet lapels and compelled radio listeners to the record store. Scaggs made the urbane turn Robert Palmer would visualize on video in the '80s.
"Silk Degrees" wasn't completely unprecedented, even among Scaggs catalog; he'd already been edging in this direction, bathing in the blues and soul of collaborations with Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section. His preceding LP, 1974's "Slow Dancer," boasted horns, strings and some embryonic disco rhythms, but it didn't have Joe Wissert's sharp production or the L.A. studio rhythm section anchored by drummer Jeff Porcaro and bassist David Hungate. The blend of Porcaro's crisp playing and Hungate's lightly funky low strings creates a propulsive groove throughout the album. Their percussive opening on "Lowdown" is just one of the album's great instrumental moments -- and a popular sample to this day.
Scaggs' songs brimmed with optimism, fitting perfectly into an America that was still re-awakening from the debacles of Vietnam and Richard Nixon, and readying itself for a bicentennial celebration. The horn charts carried the warmth of an L.A. summer, and Scaggs is - for the first time at album length - completely at ease. The album sparkles with the band's intense studio craft, but still feels effortless and organic. Scaggs' tenor fits both the mid-tempo numbers and the soaring ballads with memorable perfection. If you were an American high school student in 1976, you no doubt have fond memories of slow-dancing to the six-minute "Harbor Lights."
Legacy's 30th anniversary reissue includes new notes from Scaggs and an essay by Bud Scoppa. Three bonus tracks provide contemporaneous versions of "What Can I Say" "Jump Street" and "It's Over" from a 1976 concert at the Los Angeles Greek Theater. They're a nice coda to the original album, showing how the songs translated to live performance (good, but not as good as the studio versions), but after ten perfect tracks, the reprise is nearly superfluous. Great 70's Album!.......2007-03-29
One of the great albums of the 70's! Still sounds great and as an added bonus, 3 live tracks from 1976, highly recommended!
Some of the best crafted pop music of the 1970s.......2007-03-18
Boz Scaggs, or this album in particular, is one of the enduring "guitly pleasures" of my misspent youth in the '70s... Now, I didn't own this album back then -- you didn't have to, since just about every track on here got tons of radio airplay, all through the disco era. It's whiteboy soul of the highest order -- slick, modern, immaculately produced but also soulful and sung with great passion. This 2007 reissue/remaster boasts wonderful sound quality as well as a trio of live tunes ("What Can I Say," "Jump Street" and "It's Over") recorded at a show in LA's the Greek Theater that demonstrate that Scaggs and "Silk Degrees" weren't just an in-the-studio phenomenon. One of the classic '70s albums that really stands up well over the decades.
Tight Album.......2007-03-05
gladto hear that silk degrees has finally gotten re-mastered&gotten a touch up. "Low down" Sounds as Great as it did back in the day. Blue-Eyed Soul is well served on this Album. Boz Scaggs hit his Artistic&Commerical Peak with this tight Mid 70's strong sounding album. Vocally He was on point as well.what can I say, lido shuffle&we're all alone are my main cuts off this album. Good strogn production&Instrumentation.
Blue-Eyed Soul Classic Remastered Finally..........2007-03-02
And the sound is wonderful-clean,full,dynamic,enachnes the vocals and music greatly without shrillness or compression."Silk Degrees" is,of course,Boz Scaggs commercial breakthrough, yeilding the smashes "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" plus the radio hits "What Can I Say?","It's Over" and "We're All Alone"(later a Top 10 smash for Rita Coolidge!).It is one of the definitve albums of the mid-70's-a record that seems very much of its time while still pulsing with the immediacy of fresh invention. The 3 bonus tracks are fine live takes of "It's Over",the rocking "Jump Street",and "What Can I Say?".A must-have!

Album Description
By the mid-'70s, Boz Scaggs had amassed a varied body of work, rocking out in the late '60s with Steve Miller and laying down some molten blues with Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section before moving ever closer to full-blown soul music on a series of solo albums.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Bother--sound is poor-not much Les Dudeck guitar.......2007-07-21
Boz Scaggs fans should not be suckered into this live cd recorded at Paramount Theatre Oakland in 1974. The band includes Les Dudeck and that is why I bought it. Many songs on it but the sound in muffled thruout and the stereo is poor. I do not think Boz would have approved this release if he knew about it. His latest live album is 100% better. Les is on this album but rarely do you hear him. It seems somebody taped the concert on subpar equipment and is trying to make some bread. Boz fans beware--skip this one---it is a big disappointment.!!!!!!

Great Remastering Brings Hits to Life!.......2007-06-19
I know that Bob Ludwig at Gateway tends to overaccentuate the high end on his remastering endeavors, but when "Jo Jo" bursted into my speakers on track #2, i was BLOWN away; it was as if the Summer of 1980 blew my way like a big beautiful gust of wind. It sounded GREAT! I've ended up enjoying this collection much more than i anticipated, and am glad i waited until the remastered/expanded edition came out to finally purchase "Hits"! Was also glad to see Sony/Legacy remaster Silk Degrees earlier this year as well, finally. If you're also a Toto fan (which i admit i am--they played on both Silk Degrees and Middle Man), you'll love this collection. I haven't been able to get Jo Jo out of my head all week! Thanks for reading!
Unnecessary........2007-03-06
Even Tho I am a big, big Boz Scaggs fan, I have to say this collection is a waste of money. It's the repetition of the Original Hits! compilation, released in 1980, without "You Can Have Me Anytime" and adding "Heart Of Mine" and "Hard Times." Boz deserves better and no wonder he left Sony music if they're gonna treat his material this way. Go for the masterpieces: "My Time: Anthology 1969-1997," and his albums "Silk Degrees," "Slow Dancer" and, of course, his debut album. Collections like this one are just filler.
Belongs on Every Music Lover's Shelf.......2006-10-26
When I was a little kid and VH-1 still played music videos, Boz Scaggs hit it big in the late eighties with "Heart of Mine", which I still believe is the best pop ballad of the decade. Years would pass and I would pick up albums he would release, the best which was last year's domestic release of "Fade Into Light".
One thing I never aquired was some of his earlier work. I don't even own a copy of "Silk Degrees"! But when I was at the record store and I stumbled upon "Hits!", I found it impossible not to pick it up. It is a refreshing album for a fall afternoon drive. Scaggs is truly one of the great voices of modern times and this collection is proof.
+1/2 -- Solid disc of Scaggs' '70s hits.......2006-10-11
This title was originally issued in 1980 as a 10-track LP, and reissued verbatim on CD in 1990. The album's intent was to provide a hits-oriented overview of Scaggs' 1970s solo work, focusing on the years surrounding his 1976 multi-platinum breakthrough LP, "Silk Degrees." This reworking of the "Hits!" title expands upon the original theme with six additional tracks gathered from late '70s releases, and drops the song "You Can Have Me Anytime."
As with the original ten-track release, this fifteen-track reissue picks up Scaggs' story in 1972 with the Muscle Shoals styled "Dinah Flo" and 1974's Motown influenced "You Make it So Hard (to Say No)." The expanded track lineup adds the string-lined title ballad of 1974's "Slow Dancer," which helps show that the transition from 1974 to 1976 was more evolution than reinvention. U.S. radio listeners will remember the disco-tinged soul and jazz of 1976's "Silk Degrees" LP as a key part of the bicentennial soundtrack. The original "Hits!" lineup of "We're All Alone," "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle" is augmented here with "What Can I Say," "It's Over," and "Harbor Lights." And with 60% of the original album now included here, listeners may start to think (quite correctly) that "Silk Degrees" is a greatest-hits package in and of itself.
Scaggs' follow-up LP, "Down Two Then Left" was enough of a commercial disappointment to have been ignored on the original "Hits!" release; here it's represented by the soulful "Hard Times." The collection is filled out with a healthy dose of Scaggs' decade-end work, including "Jo Jo" and "Breakdown Dead Ahead" from his 1980 release "Middle Man," and his contribution to the "Urban Cowboy" soundtrack, "Look What You've Done to Me." The remaining new addition to the original track lineup is "Heart of Mine," taken from Scaggs' 1988 return to recording, "Other Roads."
At 64-minutes this is a generous single disc, but not nearly as comprehensive as 1998's 2-CD set "My Time: The Anthology (1969-1997)." This is perfect for those who (1) want more breadth than they'll get by buying "Silk Degrees," (2) need less depth than the 2-CD anthology, and (3) are fans of the hits rather than Scaggs and his individual albums. If a few of the titles here grab you, this (or "Silk Degrees") are the way to go. If the '70s focus is too narrow, look up the anthology for early classics ("Someone Loan Me a Dime") and material from the '90s. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. wow.......2007-07-16
I haven't listened to the entire album, but "Loan Me a Dime" is incredible! We're talking about a lengthy and HIGHLY energetic and detailed guitar jam that positively RIPS! After hearing Silk Degrees I had no idea there was music like this on early Boz Scaggs records. Awesome!
Some things just keep getting better. . . ........2007-07-12
. . .like listening to Boz Scaggs, the self named album. I lived in Sacramento back when this album came out. Boz started playing at the State Fair for free to anyone who paid to get in after he left The Steve Miller Band. I was really blessed to have been there in the very beginning. He lived in the Bay area (San Francisco) so Sacramento gigs were often. By the time he started opening for bands like "Delaney & Bonnie and Friends", his future had begun. I have almost everything he did with the Steve Miller Band. It just doesn't get any better than this Boz Scaggs 1st out of the box. Though I felt Silk Degrees was a sell out at the time, it did bring him back into fasion, and there are also some great tunes on this. I was able to finally get the "previously Out of Print" Scagg's album, because of Silk Degrees. If you get a chance, catch him live, something cozy, like The House of Blues, you won't forget it. Just isn't anything much better, but I admit I am biased.
Buy this CD.......2007-04-30
This album has been with me since 1969. I keep buying new versions as I wear out the LP, Cassette, LP again, and CD. The is comfort food to give me the warm feeling of a familiar place. Side 2 is the better one, with my all-time favorite, Loan me a dime. I saw Boz do this live in 1970 or 71, and it was transcendental.
This was one the greats!.......2007-01-23
I got the original LP when it first came out and that was my first time listening to Boz. I remember being blown away by the guy "helping" out on the guitar. Little did us young rural kids know what Duane "Skydog" Allman would go on to create. Imagine if he had stayed off that darn bike and could join Boz on his tours today. This was Boz at his best and even though he has done "Loan Me a Dime" many times since and continues to play it with his current band, that one song on this CD is worth the cost. The rest of the cuts are none too shabby by themselves!
What about "I'm Easy"?.......2006-02-05
Yes, Loan Me A Dime is fine fine fine...Long Gone, well, every cut is 100% solid take-you-away music for the discriminating ear. I saw Boz do "I'm Easy" in Fremont and he was The Sexiest Man of The Year long before People Magazine started saying who was who. Thanks, Boz. I still think about it, uh, often. ;0)

Searching.......2007-05-12
After hearing one cut (Spare a Dime) on a local station, I knew I needed this CD. I know this sounds strong and I don't ever make purchases like this but I'm delighted to have made an exception. This may be one of the best live collections I've ever heard and I never tire of it. The sheer breadth of emotions that are sung and the talent exhibited make this one I will always keep and listen to.
Scaggs Stands The Test of Time.......2007-03-15
If you love Boz, you'll love this trip down memory lane. The band is incredible. Once you've listened to the CD YOU MUST get the live video of this evening. Put it on your big screen, sit back, and enjoy a great concert, in an intimate setting, with Boz doing what he does best!
A nice live intimate session with Boz Skaggs.......2006-11-04
This CD is a live session of an intimate concert Boz Skaggs gave at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. This is one CD where I preferred the live version of each of these songs over the studio cuts. I highly recommend it. The exchange Boz Skaggs has with the audience as well as backup singers Ms. Mone't and Barbara Wilson between songs gives this CD additional appeal, allowing the listener to feel being a part of the audience for the evening. Have a glass of wine while listening....
Not my favorite..........2005-10-10
I'm a big Boz fan, but was somewhat disappointed in this compilation. I've seen him perform in concert at least 5 times and have enjoyed those performances more than this group. Boz is ALWAYS good, but this particular CD will not be one of the ones I wear out from continuous usage!

Boz at his best.......2007-06-04
I purchased this CD for one song, "Loan Me A Dime". I was surprised to find it was a 2-CD set--even more for my money! Has so many songs I can't begin to figure out what's missing. Buy it--you won't be sorry.
My Time: The Anthology (1969-1997).......2007-05-12
Before i purchased this album, i had no idea Boz was making music this amount time. His range from rock to pop to R&B and to blues stills amazes me. Not many singer/songwriters could pull that of. It is a great DVD set to be in your collection, as i know it enhances mine. I get total enjoyment out of listening to him.
What Can I Say.......2007-05-01
This review is about the Import Anthology album which was released in Australia with a slightly different track listing to this one. I've been dipping my toes off and on into Boz's catalogue since his time with The Steve Miller Band and agree with most reviewers that his work since Silk Degrees leaves a lot to be desired. I temper this by saying that his 1997 "Come On Home" blues album is a ripper. The album in question here is called an Anthology and, as such, should trace his career from beginning to just before the date of release. This album does just that. Boz's music has gone through many changes over the 30 years covered here and therefore has the potential to alienate some fans/listeners who prefer one or another period over others, as seems to be the case for many reviewers of this album. I am no different and prefer his pre-Silk Degrees music over his later, overt smooth soul albums. However, all periods must be represented on an Anthology and the compilers have done a reasonable job with this album. Remember, he had some mighty big hits with the stuff off Silk Degrees so it is logical that this period should be well represented. I am one who actually likes Silk Degrees which only came to fame nearly a year after it was released. I had moved on by that time and the repeated flogging of those songs on radio did, in fact, turn me off him a bit. And I agree with the reviewer who blamed Boz for the emergence of the God-awful TOTO. However, this album has not been compiled for my pleasure alone but for the general public who are interested in getting a Boz CD with plenty of hits but don't have many of his albums already. Since his big hits were from the Silk Degrees period then this period must be well represented. At the price, this is a very good album and if anyone has any reservations about the track selection, there is plenty on offer here to compile and burn a single CD of the tracks they like and still get value for money. The accompanying booklet is also excellent and shows that Boz used some of the very best session and band musicians available at the time. Let's not get wrapped around the axle about which Boz period was better; just enjoy the music on offer and thank our lucky stars that Boz has been able to offer us some really excellent music and musicians over the past 30 years.
Different Versions From HITS! CD.......2006-12-07
As one of the first A3 artists (not called that in the 1970's), his voice, his renditions and his songs all still hold up. He is a classic. Unlike some people, I can't find a period or song styling of his I don't like - bluesy, jazzy, rock, or vocals, I think he's all great and this CD is a great value - you'll definitely want to buy more if this is your first Boz CD.
I'm not going to repeat all the acolades from the other reviews but to note a few technical things.
The songs that are repeated from HITS! sound exactly the same - no remastering - if fact, the sound levels vary from track to track ... kind of lazy of the record label. Certainly not Boz's fault.
Though for hardcore fans, it should be noted that the following on this CD are the EXTENDED versions of the (presumably?) radio versions on the HITS! CD. These are not remixed nor do they sound vastly different but the following tracks are anywhere from :30 to :60 seconds longer:
Breakdown Dead Ahead, Jojo, & Lowdown.
This is a true anthology.......2004-04-18
I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early '70s, when Boz was first becoming popular locally. I look back and think what those rough beginnings have led to.
One of his early songs which I remember from those days was
"We Were Always Sweethearts". It received a good bit of local airtime but probably very little elsewhere. Including this track was a big reason for my buying the set in the first place. It was such a nostalghia trip for me to listen to this song for the first time in over 25 years (since I moved from California).
But there is so much more to offer. This collection provides a thorough review of all of the different musical genera Boz has done over the years...rock, R&B, blues, love ballads, etc. The unsuspected listener is delighted with a sampling of each. And the 32-page liner booklet chronicles his career thoroughly and is almost worth the collection price itself.
Unlike a "Greatest Hits" set, which typically is restricted to an artist's best-known works, this is a true anthology: a sampling of many different styled from many parts of his career.

great vocals after all these years.......2006-08-15
just like some of the previous reviewers, i bought this album about 5 years ago when it was released as an import. i debuted my then new b&w 801 series II with this cd and enjoyed it a whole lot. boz still has great vocals after all these years. i enjoy listening to "were all alone" and "siera".
Great Boz.......2006-07-21
Boz Scaggs has delighted fans for many years. He takes several of his classic songs, some better known than others, and remixes them on this fabulous collection of songs. If you are a big Boz Scaggs fans you will note a few very subtle changes in a few songs that on the surface seem to just be verbatim copies. If you like Boz Scaggs you will love this cd.
SO UNDER-RATED!!!!!!.......2006-04-18
THIS IS A 5++++++ CD/VIDEO, BOZ IS SO UNDER PLAYED AND UNDER RATED! WHAT A GREAT VOICE. A MUST HAVE FOR ALL!
Unplugged Boz is "The Best".......2006-01-30
I've always liked Boz Scaggs pretty well, but "Fade Into Light" is by far his best compilation of music. If you have a high-end audio system, you will hear what I am talking about. This CD/DVD dual-disc is of superb quality. This is the best version of "Lowdown" that Boz has ever recorded. I wasn't overly fond of Barry White's "Love TKO," but I can't get enough of Boz's version. Just sit-back and enjoy this relaxing, high-quality CD. You'll be glad that you did!
Boz never disappoints.......2005-10-28
I have not heard the enhanced stero side to this combo CD/DVD, but was so pleasantly surprised to hear Boz re-doing and refining some of his past music. The instrumentation and vocals are just splendid, and he always commands the best session men--Ricky Fataar ( a former Beach Boy, if you can believe it), Hutch, Paich, et al totally support Boz's unbelievable voice and styling on every cut. Not a weak one in the bunch. You dazzle me, Boz. And High Sierra just has to be on anyone's list for best written, performed, and produced cuts. Kudos, Boz!

Having sat most of the '80s out, Boz Scaggs returns in the mid-'90s as an urbane blues crooner, effectively bringing his music full circle from the sleek, disco-friendly pop of his '70s commercial zenith to the purer R&B of his late '60s debut. Come Home is a soulful valentine to the same models that informed that first outing, juxtaposing solid new originals against venerable songs from Jimmy Reed, Earl King Johnson, Sonny Boy Williamson, Willie Mitchell, and other blues and soul masters from Memphis, Texas, and Chicago. Scaggs, always a model of taste (who else could have produced disco hits that still sound stylish), juggles two blue-chip rhythm sections with strategic infusions of soulful brass, greasy organ, and Scaggs's own deep-fried guitar work sustaining the set's bluesy accents. --Sam Sutherland

The Voice That Never Gets Tiresome!.......2007-06-24
I was so excited to find out Boz did a blues cd, I got it immediately and it still moves me tremendously every time I listen to it. There is not one mediocre song on it. If I was stranded on an island and could have only one cd, this would be it! His voice is so smooth and the arrangements are top-notch, the playing excellent. Now he has a new cd coming, sounds like it might be straight-ahead blues too, can't wait! I have always loved Boz and I have always loved the Blues; the 2 are a perfect duo!
Just like Clapton's "From The Cradle," this is no-nonsense return to form.......2007-03-11
On the opening track "It All Went Down The Drain," Boz sounds highly reminiscent of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers (and that's definitely intended as high praise). And just as Clapton had his journeys into pop and reggae-lite and came roaring back home with "From The Cradle," Boz steps back into the bluesy framework of his first eponymous post-Steve Miller Band album. Boz has a naturally "smooth" sound, but in his case it's NOT synonymous with "lifeless." Listen to "Found Love" and you'll see the difference. The "Silk Degrees" audience is now part of the "Golden Oldies" crowd, and I'm not sure who bought the post-"Silk" albums, but I can tell you who SHOULD own this one...fans of the first album. The seven-minute "Your Good Thing (Is About To End)" stirs up memories of Joe Cocker's glory days with Leon Russell and Mad Dogs & Englishmen, as well as the late great Luther Allison in his Alligator years. It slowly and deliberately maintains its intensity, rewarding the listener who sits back, relaxes, and enjoys the ride.
Nice range of classics with some solid originals.......2006-12-17
Boz gives the music that he loves so much a fine tribute . He states in his liner notes that he had a hard time choosing the songs - which I can well understand . I particularly like the original of his called 'Picture of a Broken Heart ' which has a great lyric and a fine groove .
This album may make you go back to your blues albums , or may get you into the blues , which has many styles , no matter how you like your music .
Buy this album and enjoy a good collection of material .
Like a sewer when it rains, it all went down the drain!.......2005-01-02
Just great...simply amazing. Boz covers a bunch of blues standards and does a great job. If you wanna listen to someone who is true to the american roots of music, pick this album up now! Boz does one of the best cover albums ever...and every track is solid.
After 2 decades of slick soul-pop, Boz comes back home.......2004-03-18
Right from his earliest work as a member of the Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs has been a disciple of blues & soul, something he has never totally forgotten in any of his solo work. But of course, since 1976's mega-selling SILK DEGREES, Boz was content to make his music sound as polished as possible, creating soul-pop with a pronounced accent on "pop". However, after experiencing a creative rebirth with 1994's SOME CHANGE, Boz decided to revisit his past with an album that explored the sounds he grew up idolizing. With an album firmly grounded in R&B and blues, a title like COME ON HOME could not have possibly been bettered.
While covers albums are often the ones most avoided by an artist's fans, when done right, the result seems worth all the trouble. COME ON HOME not only proves this beyond a doubt, but Boz also created 4 original songs written & recorded in the vintage style. Clearly, Boz loves this music so much, he can tailor his own songs to the old sounds flawlessly, and that is far from an easy thing to do. Of the originals, the Stax horns-driven "Picture Of A Broken Heart" & the closing Blue Note-jazz-styled ballad "Goodnight Louise" are the biggest highlights. You'd swear that these songs were outtakes from the old days, they're that authentic-sounding. "I've Got Your Love" is almost straight from the Hi Records vaults with Boz sounding close to Al Green at times (not to mention showing off his often-overlooked guitar abilities). "After Hours" is exactly as its title claims, a downhearted blues shuffle that is perfect for any smoky club. Best of all, Boz is one White singer that can pull off these kinds of songs without trying too hard to sound Black. Again, this is a gift only a select few White singers possess, with Boz among them.
The covers range from raw Southern-styled blues to the kind of gritty soul music that was put out more by Stax Records rather than Motown. The odd song out from these covers is the jazzy take on the old standard "Love Letters", which predates Boz's standards album BUT BEAUTIFUL by 6 years. The deep Southern blues numbers given a modern makeover include Jimmy Reed's "Found Love", Sonny Boy Williamson I's "Early In The Morning" & T-Bone Walker's "T-Bone Shuffle". The first two songs pretty much retain their country blues pedigrees, while the last one has a more pronounced city blues identity with the addition of piano & horns. I wonder if Boz is a particularly big fan of Bobby "Blue" Bland, for he covers two of his songs with "Ask Me 'Bout Nothin' [But The Blues]" & "Don't Cry No More". He could easily have chosen "I Pity The Fool" or some other better-known Bland classic, but Boz did right in digging deeper into Bland's catalog for songs to recast.
Boz even heads on down to New Orleans with two Crescent City soul classics: the recently-departed Earl King's "It All Went Down The Drain" (again going for a lesser-known gem than the more-famous "Come On [Let The Good Times Roll]") & Fats Domino's "Sick & Tired". The latter tune in particular is a piano-pounding delight, Boz's version sure to have pleased even Fats himself. The gutbucket soul of labels like Stax & Hi Records is given a chance to shine with tunes that make you wonder why those labels never thought about signing up Boz back in their heyday. Syl Johnson's "Come On Home" & a 7-minute epic workout on Mable John's "Your Good Thing [Is About To End]" (later an even bigger hit for Lou Rawls) are songs Boz easily gets comfortable in, and like always, his enthusiasm & genuine love for the material comes through totally.
After 30 years in the music business, 20 of those spent employing a decidely more glossy sound than what he was brought up on, Boz Scaggs took a considerable risk in returning to the stripped-down R&B blues that first inspired him to become a musician in the first place. The old logic of "stick with what works" may have hampered most other artists' wishes to do something like this. However, Boz had reached a point in his career where he could make an album like COME ON HOME with little regard for what sold best. He was a confirmed veteran who could record COME ON HOME for himself & those devoted fans who've stuck with him through thick & thin (perhaps even for newcomers like me). While the album after this would have Boz making a slight return to the polished soul-pop that had made him a name, he still proved that he could COME ON HOME back to this roots & influences without making it just another run-of-the-mill hats-off to who inspired you.

A personal favorite.......2007-03-09
This is the edgiest Scaggs there was and IMHO, the peak of his performance. "JoJo" and "Do Like you Do in New York" showcase that the man can really rock. Doesn't hurt to have a chunk of Toto working behind the scenes, too.
I hear Scaggs is on tour and is rocking the house. Very good news.
Boz 2006.......2006-08-23
Boz's Middle Man when released was the ever present joy in my life the follow up and smash that I felt superceded Silk Degrees and the players that what made Toto the group that they were and as a huge fan, still is today. Let me just inform everyone I just concluded a concert on Friday August 18, 2006 headlined by a one Mr. William Royce "Boz" Scaggs himself, let's just say everyone there's still a breakdown dead ahead, and Jojo stil has those Broadway lights below him, and absolutley superb concert showcasing Boz at this best and he has lost nothing today, tomorrow, or yesterday.
One of Music's Best Voices.......2006-07-27
I agree with most of those who reviewed this great album. I've been a Boz Scaggs fan ever since Lowdown and he's never let me down since. Middle Man is Boz at the top of his game with some great singles along with that beautiful "jewel in the crown" Simone; what a wonderful surprise that was and it remains one of my favorite Boz Scaggs songs today. All in all an excellent album that's managed to keep its freshness even 26 years later! I'd love to see music today go back to this sound, it was feel good music for all ages that I'll love forever.
Boz Scaggs at his best..........2006-06-24
This may be Boz Scaggs' best CD/album and that's no small feat - most of his CD's are quite good. I still consider Boz to be very underrated and 'Middle Man' really brings out the great vocals, songwriting and sophisticated production job. This is a very tight, listenable CD. JoJo, Breakdown Dead Ahead, and Isn't It Time are wonderful songs, that when you think about it, were really kind of ahead of their time, since I believe this was from 1979. Boz ranks among of the best, and became one of the real slick performers of the era along with Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers and Little Feat. This is definitely worth the price and you'll want to keep listening to it as time goes by.
Middle Man is tops!.......2005-06-10
A couple of years after his excellent follow up to the multi-million selling "Silk Degress" met with a rather luke-warm reception Boz returned to the top 10 with this masterpiece - his best ever album? Very possibly.
The first two cuts ("Jojo" and "Breakdown Dead Ahead") both made the top 20, but the rest of the album is just as good - if not better.
David Foster co-wrote most of these tracks just before becoming one of the 80s big names in production - and they're every bit as good as the David Paich co-writes from 'Silk'. Closing cut, "You Got Some Imagination" might be his hottest rocker ever, no surprise given that it was co-written by Steve Lukather of Toto, whose lead guitar is breathtaking as always. But, while the musicanship is of an impeccable standard, it's the vocals that really lend the album its overall sense of class.
It's a pity Boz began his 'semi-retirement' shortly after this album's release, but at least he left in style.
