The Josh Joplin Group coast the vertical horizon of adult alternative on their debut album. Backed by a full rhythm section, singer and storyteller Josh Joplin weaves words with a wistful whine that invokes the Counting Crows' Adam Duritz, Michael Penn, and a less shiny happy Michael Stipe. Joplin looks at life through gray-colored glasses, unloading the burdens of existence one moment and forgiving others for the weights they carry the next. Whether the topic is the two-tiered emotional facade of Tinseltown on "Camera One," the homesick melancholy of "Who's Afraid of Thomas Wolfe," or the admission that life will always have its pitfalls on "Gravity," Joplin unveils a somber, introspective worldview against a jangly pop that keeps the musical vibe light even as the emotions get heavy. --Jennifer Maerz

5 out of 5 stars best of the late 90's.......2006-03-30

got solid radio airplay, and video airplay on VH1 for the song Camera One, which is probably their best song.

the album Useful Music is clearly the Josh Joplin Group's best work, the songs here range from merely upbeat ("Matter"), to slower ballads ("Here I Am" and "Dutch Wonderland") to dark introspective ("I've Changed") to downright adrenaline raisers ("Trailways"). All songs are pretty remarkable, although I've never personally cared for "Superstar".

I firmly believe this is one of the top ten cd's of the late 90's period. Yes, they do sound a lot like early R.E.M., but you know what, R.E.M. was pretty darn good before they
became "shiny happy people".

If you liked Camera One, or heard one of JJG's other songs and want to give one of their CD's a whirl, THIS is the one.
It's pretty good!

2 out of 5 stars Is this R.E.M. ?.......2004-04-20

Wow, I felt so misled by all the rave reviews for this album that I had to write a review of my own. I bought this album based on these reviews; I don't understand what these other reviewers are listening to. This CD sounded so much like generic R.E.M. wannabe pop-rock that I had to resist the urge to pull it out of my CD player. I listened to the whole CD twice and only found a few songs worth listening to more than once: (Gravity and Camera One), and even those songs are too "commercial." Josh Joplin's voice and music sounds so much like R.E.M. that my friends thought I was listening to a new album of theirs. After reading the reviews posted on Amazon.com I expected something more "creative" and "wonderful," instead I got a CD that sounds like the pop-rock they were playing on the radio over 5 years ago. If you're a big fan of pop bands like Barenaked Ladies, Smashmouth, and R.E.M. you could enjoy this; but if you're looking for something "different" or "original," try something from Sunny Day Real Estate or a recient Radiohead album instead.

5 out of 5 stars Not "Useful"--Necessary!.......2004-04-04

I first heard "Camera One" on my local radio station and I immediately fell in love with the song. If it came on the radio while I was driving, I would make another trip around the block just to listen to the song. I was a bit scared before I bought this album though. I was afraid that it would be like many other albums--one song is amazing but the rest of the album is horrible. I was very pleased to find this wasn't the case. I bought this album almost 4 years ago and I still listen to it nearly every day. It's the kind of album that you can listen to over and over again without it getting old--it just seems to get better! Many people complain that Joplin's voice sounds exactly like Michael Stipe's from REM. Even so, this is still a most amazing album...

"Matter"--Great opening song. Exciting and fast. One that you just have to crank up and roll down the windows for.

"Gravity"--A perfect example of JJG's outstanding lyrics! Great music and amazing writing.

"Here I Am"--My favorite song by this band. Starts out simply and just builds. The lyrics, again, are great. I know that I say that a lot, but I can't stress it enough.

"Undone"--Didn't exactly like this song on the first listen. However, it began to grow on me and I really do like it now.

"Camera One"--The reason that I feel in love with this band. I don't know how to explain it. It's another one of those songs that you just have to crank all the way up!

"I've Changed"--A song that really makes you think (which is rare in music these days). It's a nice mellow sound for the middle of this album. Definately one of my favorite songs on this album.

"Trailways"--A great "roadtrip" song. Just a gernerally fun song.

"Who's Afraid Of Thomas Wolfe?"--Witty lyrics, JJG's sense of humor comes out in this song a bit. Not laugh out loud funny, but you'll definately listen to this one with a bit of a smirk on your face. "I sold my soul and I never got paid..."

"Phil Ochs"--Good song. Didn't know exactly who Phil Ochs was when I first heard this. From what I've found out, he was a percussionist for several different bands. Something that a friend and I noticed about this song: no percussion is used for it. Kind of a fitting tribute. It really is a good song. It captures the way that the pop stars of today cannot even compete with the ways that the artists from (for lack of a better term) "back in the day" influenced music and truly made music instead of being prepackaged teenie boppers.

"Superstart"--A fun song. You'll definately be bobbing your head to this one.

"Human"--A very haunting melody. Makes me think about growing up and realizing that we're all just "human."

"Dutch Wonderland"--Another song that has become one of the theme songs to growing up. "Where the gym teacher was always mad..." This song is just one of those that can be put on and nostalgia seems to grip anyone who listens. The first time I heard it, I literally cried thinking about my childhood. It'll definately make anyone think.

"I've Changed (Alternate Version"--An electric version of "I've Changed." Because of the subject matter of the song, I think I like the first one a little better, but this one is still great. There is an added verse in it which seems to add a bit more though.

In my life, I've only found a few albums that I like as much as this one. It is truly one that I can put in on a two hour drive and just keep on repeat. "Useful Music" seems to be a bit modest from this band. "Necessary Music" seems to be more like it.

4 out of 5 stars Get it while you can!.......2004-03-24

The Josh Joplin Group (formerly the Josh Joplin Band) no longer exists, so pick up this CD while you still can! This is the best one that is commercially available.

Joplin is a rocker who wants to be a folk singer, and his lyrics tend to both quirky and intriguing. Basically, I highly recommend this CD. Give it a few listens and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2003-12-17

This is an excellent CD. With the exception of "Phil Ochs," there is never a dull moment on this CD. The CD is a great combination of folk, soft rock, rock, and rap, that just keeps on giving.

Highlights of this CD include "Camera One," a delightfully executed song that totally hides the fact that it is about suicide; "Matter," about what happens to dreams; "Superstar," a very cool rap/rock song; "Who's Afraid of Thomas Wolfe," about how you can never go home again; and "I've Changed," about someone contemplating suicide. In case you can't tell, the themes of these songs are very serious but the combination of musical talent and writing talent makes it all worth it.

Let's face it: Sometimes, even Noel Coward could fail. Take his 1961 musical Sail Away: Coward wrote the book, lyrics, and score--and sometimes you wish he had delegated a bit more. Set on the cruise ship S.S. Coronia, the show certainly has its moments, but overall it fails to make a lasting impression. While there are lovely tunes ("Sail Away," "Later than Spring") and a few peerless comic showcases ("Useless Useful Phrases," "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?"), Coward's trademark wit comes across as toothless now. And yet Sail Away remains cultish because it turned Elaine Stritch into a marquee name. The singer-actor was so good during the out-of-town tryouts that Coward expanded her part, and Stritch ran with it. She sells a ballad like "Something Very Strange" with all her heart, but what she really transcends are bravura pieces such as "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?" (which she reprised in her one-woman show At Liberty). If you want to listen to the birth of a stage star, this CD is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars cute Elaine Stritch cast album.......2003-09-17

SAIL AWAY wasn't a big hit on Broadway when it opened in 1961, running a scant 167 performances. However, the show was received with a better reception in London, opening at the Savoy Theatre in 1962, running 252 performances. Noel Coward's sparkling score and the fabulous Elaine Stritch are the main drawcards for buying this cast album.

Fynsworth Alley has reissued the original London cast album of SAIL AWAY, which Stritch herself considers as superior to the Broadway cast album. At last, this tuneful and witty score, with the formidale Stritch as the lead character Mimi Paragon, can be discovered for a new generation of fans.

Most memorable are Elaine Stritch's numbers "Why Do the Wrong People Travel?", "Useless Useful Phrases", "Come to Me", and the lovely 11 o'clock number "Something Very Strange".

The supporting cast includes John Hewer (THE BOY FRIEND) and Dorothy Reynolds (SALAD DAYS), with Grover Dale, Sheila Forbes, Mavis Villiers, Edith Day, David Holliday, Margaret Christensen and Sydney Arnold.

SAIL AWAY is a must-own for fans of Elaine Stritch and the genius of Noel Coward.

3 out of 5 stars Welllll........Elaine is Good But...........2003-08-07

Many Broadway officianados were no doubt looking forward to the reissue of this long out of print "classic" starring the incomparable Elaine Stritch. Sad to say, one listening confirms why this show failed to make an impact, either on Broadway or London's West End. This dreary, bland little musical about not much of anything barely registers on any level. Most of the songs are trivial as well as instantly forgettable, and there is no story to speak of so nothing much keeps you interested. It takes Ms. Stritch's six solos to pull you out of the ether and, although even her considerable talents can't quite make a musical out of this mess, it's a marvelous document of Stritch hitting her stride. Thanks to CD programming, I can skip the rest of the dross and just listen to "Stritchie" (as Noel Coward use to call her) do her thing. And what a wonderful thing it is. Stritch may not have the best vocal instrument ever, but is there anyone else who can put their interpretive stamp on a song the way she does? Much like the late, great Dolores Gray, when Elaine Stritch interprets a song, every other singer in the world might as well forget about ever trying it. Stritch puts her definitive stamp on everything she touches. Yes, a trilly songbird like Julie Andrews makes a song sound wonderful. but with Stritch you hear the words, their meaning, and the song "feels" wonderful. Here, her "Why Do the Wrong People Travel" is a classic of sorts, and she amazingly brought as much gusto to the song in her one-woman show "At Liberty" some forty years later. In fact, she makes even the pedestrian "Useless Useful Phrases" worth a few listens. In fact, it's hard not to imagine what Stritch could have done with great parts at this point in her career, instead of mediocre trifles like "Sail Away". Oh well, what matters most is that Stritch was in the house for "Sail Away", and now she's there to stay. Bon vayage!

4 out of 5 stars Stritch to the Max.......2003-07-28

For anyone who is a fan of Elaine Stritch, this is a must own.

For those of you looking for an interesting new (old) show, this is the one for you. The music is delightfully simple and the lyrics are wonderful. Certain songs have me thinking of Sondheim. Coward is a sarcastic and incredibly funny lyricist.

Just as Bernadette Peters is a perfect match for Sondheim, Stritch is a perfect match for Coward.

4 out of 5 stars You'll Wish Your Cigarettes Were This Smooth.......2006-12-02

This entire CD, with the exception of the eventually grating Dirty Harry theme, is a very pleasant aural experience. Like a refreshing liquorice cordial, it has a strong nose of rhythm and a creamy smooth guitar being held together by pepperings of horn and the pleasantly mellow bite of James Taylor's keyboards and organ. There is some repetition of grooves, but it's overall a good feeling, since the groove is good enough to bear repeating without appearing flat or hollow.

This CD has stood the test of time well and can serve as excellent chill out or driving around at night music. It's very difficult to not like James Taylor, as his music is always soulful and easy to digest. You know good music when you hear it, even if you're not a musician, so you'll know when you hear this that it's good music.

    4 out of 5 stars Cruising Music.......2001-04-03

This was the first JTQ album I heard, and the one that introduced me to the world of acid jazz. It sounds like the soundtrack to some cool car chase film, and a convertible or a speed boat must be the most appropiate place for its listening. Its funky consistency will put anybody in a good mood. The organ, drums and guitar are outstanding throughout, these guys really dominate their instruments. The only bad thing (if it can be considered a bad thing) is that the wah-wah is used the whole time, and this may lead some people to find the songs a bit repetitive. However, I believe JTQ have a really cool and funky sound, and in my opinion this album is their best together with Money Spider.

    Album Description

This album has been designed specifically for extended states of deep uninterrupted meditation, and related applications, such as massage & body-work, centering, or inducing an aura of peace, calm, and sacredness. Each of the 2 cuts is a continuous smooth half-hour of music.

THE BASIC CONCEPT & PURPOSE of this album:

    *MUSIC FOR PRODUCING PROFOUND STILLNESS*

When you look into a shallow pond to see what rocks are on the bottom, if the surface waves are calm, you can easily see the bottom in great detail. But if the waves are turbulent, it is difficult to get any clear reception of what the bottom looks like. Now since water corresponds to the emotional body, this analogy holds very true for the emotions as well.

When the emotional body is turbulent (big waves), it is difficult to get clear reception for messages coming through from your own Higher Self, or your personal angels, or any Light Beings trying to communicate with you. Conversely, when your emotions are very quiet and still (like calm shallow waves), it becomes much easier to receive messages from within.

Emotional turbulence disrupts reception - like static in radio reception. The calmer the emotions, the more detail with which you can receive communication within. When the emotions achieve tremendous calm, then they become like a glassy lake, or a smooth mirror or window - thus allowing the passage of information with minimal distortion.

The stiller you are emotionally, the clearer you can receive. The stiller you are emotionally, the finer the detail with which you can internally pick up information. Hence, the expression: "Be still and know that I am God." This music album is specifically designed and dedicated to this same purpose - to facilitate inducing states of extremely profound emotional stillness in the listener. May it help you become a transparent exquisitely-still lake of clear reception!

The effects of this album make it ideal for bodywork, massage, yoga, inner peace, calm, producing a "sacred space", and extended states of deep uninterrupted meditation.

4 out of 5 stars Drifts and Drones.......2006-03-10

This is my only Iasos cd and I've had
if for many years now. The CD consists of
two tracks and I'm partial to the first one,
"Cloud Prayer." While listening to this
piece I am actually reminded more of a
bright region of deep space than I am by
its more terrestrial title, but thats ok - the
piece has been a joy to return to again and again.
I don't find the second track, "Throne Realms,"
to be nearly as engaging, but the strength of
the first is more than enough to merit owning
the cd. Well worth a listen if one enjoys
artists like Michael Sterns and Jonn Serrie.
