Front 242's music moves the body and the intellect with equal efficacy, and this album is definitive of that sound. Musician/programmers Patrick Codenys and Daniel Bressanutti brilliantly hold forth with multi-dimensional layers of percussion, noise, keyboards and spoken-word fragments. Gliding over and slashing through this thoughtfully aggressive din are lead singer Jean-Luc DeMeyer's low, ominous vocals. He deploys his trademark rumble with dangerous accuracy on the moody "Untold", with matter-of-fact despair on "Tragedy For You." "Rhythm Of Time" is an electro masterpiece, invigorating and foreboding. Backing singer Richard 23 is given the spoltlight on "Moldavia," with Codenys and Bressanutti adding colorful mutilation to his confident wail. Also of note are the chimerical instrumental pieces, in particular "Neurobashing" and the "hidden" track "HardRock."

BOC at their finest.......2007-06-25
Through the years, there haven't been a whole lot of hard rock bands willing to go the extra mile and add some creativity to their music as a way to spice up the fun, but Tyranny and Mutation is an album full of interesting and flat out mind-boggling WEIRD musical ideas. In addition to that, this is also the fastest rock Blue Oyster Cult ever put on record (since most of their stuff was slow, dreary and disturbing).
It's a really fast-paced rocking record. The vocal melodies are quite good as well. Blue Oyster Cult should be remembered for years to come, thanks to the band members choosing to make their music distinct, clever and exciting in the early days.
A Cult Classic.......2006-11-02
This is a great recording for anyone who enjoys the Blue Oyster Cult. They have one of the best lead guitarist in the world. He's right up there with Clapton and Page. This recording shows a lot of his talent. Check out their new live CD with a DVD included and watch him play that guitar. He's great. they're great and this recording is great.
Another Good One.......2006-10-17
BOC's second album mines similar territory to their debut with it's mix of hard rock, metal, jams, and just plain weirdness. The original vinyl album was divided into two sections, side one called "The Black" and side two "The Red". Side one is pretty much straight ahead rock and roll. The album starts out with "The Red And The Black" which is a re done version of "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" which appeared on their first album. It is followed by "O.D.'d On Life Itself", "Hot Rails To Hell" and "& Screaming Diz-Busters" all former concert staples. Side two, The Red, mixes in more variety with some of BOC's patented mysterious lyrics. You can tell just by the titles that this is not your average stuff, "Baby Ice Dog", "Wings Wetted Down", "Teen Archer", and "Mistress Of The Salmon Salt", all delightfully strange. Personally I don't think this album is quite as good as their debut, but it is a good one and the first half is some of the most rocking music BOC produced in their career.
Not just a continuation of that great debut.......2006-06-16
This album never left my turntable back when i first bought it when in high school. I had every hard rock, prog rock, "metal" (or whatever we called in back then) album there was. Spent a fortune on music in the early 70's. But this album and, obviously, the first one, were as wild, outlandish, unhinged, funny and hard rocking as you could get back then. The combination of writing, tone, and musicianship were without peer. Period. My ONLY gripe with the first two BOC albums? The mixing was heinous. Why did they make even the best stereo sound crappy? The drumming had no "weight". The guitars were muted. The vocals just didnt project the sound these guys deserved. They sounded like they were recorded from inside a beer can. It didn't improve until "Secret Treaties" which, while not an improvement over the first two in content, at least sounded like a hard rock album should. But, after 30+ years, i still would group the first two BOC albums as all time favorites.
BOC's first TRULY solid effort in a long line of CLASSICS!!.......2006-02-24
The second in BOC's "Black and White" period. The B&W period consists of their first three albums and is named that for the dark and cryptic over-tones they possess (an everlasting theme they've perfected to this day, but yet not to the extent of the B&W period), and ofcourse, the black and white album-covers they sport. Personally, Tyranny & Mutation is by far my favorite of BOC's first three massive assaults, and is a lot tighter and well-rounded than the first. It's divided in two sections, "The Black" and "The Red", and the first track is appropriately called "The Red & The Black" and is actually an impressive re-doing of "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" off their debut. Stand-outs are "O.D.d' On Life Itself", "Hot Rails To Hell", "Wings Wetted Down" and "Mistress Of The Salmon Salt" (commonly known as "Quicklime Girl"). But in my opinion, EVERY song on this impressive album totally rocks and has the MOST classic (and dark!) rock & roll sound and "feel" to it, of the entire B&W period. Where as the first and third may have just a couple possible throw-away tracks, Tyranny & Mutation is solid from start to finish, and it begins to show the incredible talents of the band, and demonstrates what I love most about BOC: they are one of THE most creative and interesting bands out there! If you liked their debut, then you are sure to love their second effort with even more ease than the first (though it doesn't take much effort at all to get into these guys). An instant classic!

Connection to the past (and glorious it was...).......2006-02-27
Industrial has come a long, long way in terms of modernizing. You'd hardly think that "moldavia" by front 242 and "Chrome" by VNV nation are connected by anything. However, there was true creativity and honest feeling in the late 80s/early 90s industrial scene, and this cd exemplefies that spirit (if containing a few faults).
Characteristic of the new wave era is an interesting drum pattern that is apparent in pop music especially. We all know the sound, but its hard to describe- kind of like hitting a shallow box, but with a nice rhythm. For me, that drum pattern is the musical personification of the 80s. Early industrial took this drum pattern and used it for a more sinister style of music than, say, ABC. "Tyranny (for you)" utilizes this drum pattern with some interesting samples, sparse melodies and a continuous and often changing pattern, which is where the genius truly lies. The vocals are muffled and lack the crips, clear production of current industrial. This occasionally muddy production is the only drawback of this otherwise great album.
Front 242 had very different tools than the modern industrial artist, and the drum patterns of the day are interestingly connected to 80s pop (unlike the vastly different areas of industrial and dance pop of today). That said, the lyrics have all the anger and passion of today's bands, giving the album its dark feel. All in all, a catchy and enjoyable tunnel to the past of this genre (though a tunnel not meant for everyone. Try it, you may like it).
Will make you dance out of your clothes.......2006-01-26
I can honestly say that this is one of those albums that I would require if I were to be stuck on a space station for a year.
I will never get tired of it.
Do yourself a favor: buy this cd.
Industrial classic.......2005-09-30
Great music with a lasting impact. A big hand for Front 242! Few musicians could afford to play such a variety of sounds and noises with so splendid effect. This is vintage recording, which aims at the audiance by far bigger than "industrial" fans. A must have.
Pretty interesting Front album.......2005-09-21
This was probably my second Front 242 album, after "Front by Front". And actually it was only like a year ago that I had bought that one. This one stands out as well. While not actually perfect it is way above average. Some tracks do admittedly either drag a bit or stuff like that, but the good outweighs the bad (not that bad) in many ways.
I have to say that my favorite song on the record is "Tragedy for You". That synth line is just hypnotic, and the vocals are rather unique. It never gets old, no matter how many times I repeat it. The album also starts out great with "Sacrifice", which will satisfy most EBM fans. So will this record. I also really enjoy "Trigger 2 (Anatomy of a Shot)". It is quite a good record.
So, even after going on to a major label, Front 242 are very much themselves. I think it is a great buy if you like industrial and EBM. It's one of my favorite styles of music so I'm glad to have them. And if you only heard "Pulse" and don't think you like them, you may want to try this album instead.
Tyranny (For Me) yes please!.......2005-08-02
This record is superb! If you love Ministry or Nine Inch Nails, you need this album. Pure industrial music. It's Belguim, its not metal by any means, but it is very much industrial. Their synth work is fascinating. I'm going to buy more of Front 242.

Album Description
In the seven years since his last solo release, Bruce Dickinson made a hugely successful return to Iron Maiden, recording two acclaimed albums and touring the globe several times.
Tyranny Of Souls sees him renewing his collaboration with guitarist/producer Roy Z. Z has worked with Bruce since 1994's Balls To Picasso album and most recently produced Judas Priest's reunion album.
A staggeringly powerful album, Tyranny Of Souls takes the listener on an adventurous journey, beginning in punishing fashion with apocalyptic drumming and fiery guitar work before "Navigate The Seas Of The Sun" supplies what Bruce calls "a little chill-out moment."
From there it builds to a spectacular conclusion with the ultra-heavy title track.
The album's piece de resistance is its title track. At turns soothingly melodic and staggeringly powerful, it can only be described as a juggernaut. "The opening part was also cribbed from the three witches in Macbeth. Basically, it's what the whole track ended up being about - the supernatural manipulating people from behind their backs."
Lyrically, the album dips in and out of sci-fi and aviation-related areas. There are no prizes for guessing what the song "Abduction" is about, but "Soul Intruders" is a distant cousin, Bruce wondering aloud whether "there are loose spirits floating around the universe. They can zap into our bodies and inhabit us, a bit like a computer virus, and we don't even know they're there. When we die, they just attach themselves to somebody else."

Worst of the 3.......2007-07-25
Definitely the worst of the 3, Accident of Birth being #1, Chemical Wedding #2. Not much to speak real fondly of on this one. Buy another Maiden instead!
great as always.......2007-06-24
just another great album from bruce.underrated like always but why change now?the vocals are incredible the music is great, hope he does more himself and maiden are only getting even better,if thats possible! buy it if you dont it is surely your loss.
A Tour de Force of Classic Metal.......2007-04-25
First off, I love the Bruce/ Roy Z. combination. This may have been recorded in Karloffornia, but it is British metal at its best. It is progressive but never wimpy. It is dynamic, explosive, and awash with a strange atmosphere from the intro "Mars Within." Newer metal bands and producers could learn a lot about dynamics and atmosphere from this album. As others have stated, TOS continues the same vein from Chemical and Accident but perhaps less cohesive. I don't agree that it suffers from Adrian Smith's absence though; check out the solos from "Soul Intruder" or the title track. Roy can riff with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, or anyone. This CD displays precision coexisting with pile-driving power.
Some tracks are closer to Iron Maiden, "Power of the Sun" and "River of No Return" but I like the energy and passion of this CD better than recent Maiden releases. That's not so much a put-down of Maiden; hearing Bruce's solo work emphasizes what's best about Maiden. I agree with the reviewers who like this production better than Maiden's. I implore Steve Harris to listen to and embrace this sound.
"Abduction" and the title tracks are my favorite cuts from this album, but most of it is captivating and hypnotic. This compares favorably with anything Bruce has done before and is well worth the 7 year wait. TOS is somewhat uneven, so I give it 4 1/2 stars in relation to the rest of the Bruce/Maiden catalog, but the inimitable vocals definitely rate a 5.
P.S. "Believil" does sound like Dio.
A great followup to "The Chemical Wedding".......2006-07-25
For those who were dissapointed with Iron Maiden's lackluster production on the "Dance of Death" album get Bruce's latest solo album Tyranny of Souls now!
Like its predecessor studio album "The Chemical Wedding", Tyranny of Souls is a great sounding CD with great songs and some very heavy guitars courtesy of Roy Z and co.
Some fans have commented that Adrian Smith is missing from this album, but i disagree.. if you know your Maiden, you know Dave Murray is the main soloist and Steve Harris the main songwriter, with Adrian providing some solos here and there.
The main ingredients that make this album great are Roy Z.'s modern, heavy guitar sounds, top notch production skills and songwriting and Bruce's voice.
Steve Harris and the rest of Iron Maiden should take a cue from the clean sound and heavy guitars on this album. A must for any Maiden fan!
As good as what he has done with Iron Maiden.......2006-06-28
While not in the league with a Piece of Mind, this recording is just as heavy, but not as progressive as other Maiden recordings, like Number of the Beast.
Think a bit more simplified with all the quality songwriting, performance and production.

Amazing.......2004-09-17
This album is amazing. Anyone can really like this music. It's upbeat, powerful, and at times can rock out. There are songs like Biomusicology which just give you an upbeat awesome feeling or there are the awesome guitar riffs in Stove By a Whale. It's amazing from beginning to end. Let's just say "had i never come across the vastness of pavement", I would be less of a person!
I Love This Album.......2004-09-02
I absolutely agree with all of the comments made by my fellow reviewers, and I probably won't have anything new to offer hear in my review, but this album, it moves me so much that I just have to add my own two cents. I've known about Ted Leo and the Pharmacists for over a year now, but I never actually heard their music until I saw them live last month at the Cafe Metropolis in Wilkes Barre, PA. The show was spectacular, but Ted's greatness didn't really dawn on me until days later when I started hearing 'Biomusicology' over and over again in my head. As soon as this madness began, I immediately went to my local record store to get 'The Tyranny of Distance', but they were all sold out of Ted Leo cds, so I drove an hour out of my way to the next closest place where I could get it. After finally obtaining the object of my passions, I listened the hell out of it for days on end. Biomusicology and Timorous Me are honestly two of the greatest songs I've ever heard. And other numbers from this unbelievable record like 'Parallel or Together?', 'Stove By A Whale', 'The Great Communicator' and 'The Gold Finch and the Red Oak Tree' are all breathtaking as well. Simply put, Ted's music is so ballsy, so full of guts and glory, that it'll just knock you right out. Definitely check this out.
This record is incredible........2004-04-20
Early summer, 2001. Some friends and I are stuffed into a crowded living room eagerly anticipating the performance by tonight's headliners, Q And Not U. None of us have heard of this 'Ted Leo guy' that is opening up the show, but I figure I should check him out. The members of his band set up and once everything sounds good (enough for playing in a living room), they set down their instruments and walk off into the crowd. The one guy left standing with his guitar steps up to the mic, introducing himself as Ted Leo. He briefly mentions the history of the cover song he's about to play, then jumps right into a solo rendition of Dirty Old Town. "This guy ain't half bad, he's got history, which is what most punk rockers don't have today", I thought to myself. Ted approaches the mic before beginning his next song and suggests that the people in the room move closer. I ablige and wind up within smelling distance from Ted. "That's my man" he says, pointing at me. What happened next is a little blurry. I'm sure that I remember hearing the opening chords of Timorous Me and I'm sure I remember my jaw hitting the rotting wood floor. Halfway through the song, the other members of his band come back up and flesh out the song for its final reprise. I remember little of their set from that point on, other than the simple fact that my mind had just been blown. I had been privy to some of the greatest songs I had ever heard, songs that would comprise The Tyrrany of Distance record to be released later in the year. The songs were immediate, catchy, intelligent and were aware of themselves. Ted knows his influences. They are Bad Brains, Thin Lizzy and Billy Bragg. The show went on to be a ton of fun with Q And Not U playing two sets. But there was something about that 'Ted Leo guy.' Those songs were just too good, I thought. Within six months, I would find myself physically unable to stop listening to The Tyrrany of Distance and traveling to see Ted and the Pharmacists whenever possible. I've been told that I only like Ted Leo because he's a punk rocker. That if he didn't come out of the hardcore punk scene, I wouldn't pay notice. In one vague sense, that is essentially true, because if Ted weren't a punk, this music wouldn't exist the way it does. This record is the most perfect synthesis of his pop, punk, protest music and dub/reggae influences that I could ever imagine. This is the best record that Lookout Records has ever put out. Yeah, it's even better than THAT one... All I can really suggest is that you do yourself a favor and get this record any way possible.
No Album compares to this........2004-03-24
There are no combination of intelligent, music-oriented terms that can be used to do this album any justice. The Tyranny of Distance is the single most creative piece of pop-rock mastery ever recorded. I challenge you to find two songs on this album even remotely similar not only to each other, but to any other song ever written. This album should give everyone hope for the future of music.
Can't Go Wrong.......2003-12-28
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' the Tyranny of Distance simply put is a great CD. Every track features great vocals and music. Tracks range from Track 3 (Under the Hedge) which is upbeat and vibrant to Track 10 (The Golden Finch and the Red Oak Tree) which is much more mellow. This style of music doesn't really have anything mainstream that sounds remotely similar so definitely give them a listen.

Masterpiece comes to mind. Also Solid Masterpiece is appropriate...
Having started with DT eons ago, and like most who were encouraged by the rebirth of quality music in the modern age (if tragically underground), I hungered for more "prog", a genre of music that really can only be pigeonholed as musicians who wield epic emotion but aren't satisfied without pushing envelopes at the same time...which really is simply characterized as the greatest music possible.
This virtousic concept album about apprehension towards corporate greed takes me back to that first Dream Theater or Queensryche album I heard, but at times Shadow Gallery surprises even myself into begging for placement into the forefront of popular music. It's that good.
One of the greatest songs I have ever heard is a keystone to this album: "I Believe." It is a good represenation of what Shadow Gallery produces in their finest moments. Layers of intellectually strewn choruses, virtuosic passages of dueling guitars/keys, and just heart-wrenching emotion. Top quality production and diversity even within itself. The here-then-gone cameo of James laBrie doesn't hurt. One of the most rare finds in humanity is technical proficiency coupled with fantastic expression and personality. I find this review staying very short, because put simply, it's all here.
It's been a while since there's been an album I've been addicted to so much. Every time I put it back on the shelf, I change my mind and listen to it one more time. Whenever I'm not listening to it and I think of it, I must go play it. That reminds me...
10 stars.......2006-06-28
If I could I would give it ten stars. One of my top 5 albums of all time.I can't say enough good things.
Pretty Good - gets better with multiple listenings.......2006-02-13
Okay - when I first heard this CD, I wasn't all that thrilled. It's not my first Shadow Gallery CD - I purchased Carved in Stone before this, and actually like that better, but Tyranny is starting to grow on me and I'm beginning to appreciate some it's merits I didn't notice at first. I'm not a power metal guy - I can't stand hearing speed guitar just to showcase how fast a guitarist can play, or speed druming for the same reason - only relative to the drummer. When I first listened to this CD, I got the impression that's what was unfolding and shelved it. I pulled it again and began to notice the story that unfolds with the lyrics - they're pretty complex and quite well done. Putting the lyrics together with the metal then begins to form the story that is Tyranny - it's almost scary that it's also almost a commentary on our current society and conditions! (but not a political soundoff). I can't accept the criticism of the vocalist I've read from other reviewers here. I find Shadow Gallery's vocals a strong point of the band and deserving of much more recognition and praise that they've received. They are simply exceptional. I still prefer Carved in Stone over Tyranny, but Tyranny has come off the shelf now and is becoming more appealing. It's worthy of a second listen, and maybe more.

Nice followup to Turn of the Tides.......2005-11-29
In the trio of "Guitar" CDs that I consider of Tangerine Dream, this one ranks behind Turn of the Tides, but ahead of Rockoon.
"Guest musician" guitarist Zlatko Perica left the band sometime between the release of Turn of the Tides and the sessions for this CD. His replacement is Gerald Gradwohl, a competent guitarist to say the least, but Zlatko's fire on the previous CDs was partly the reason that they were so good.
Tyranny of Beauty has some great guitar work by Grohwohl and Jerome Froese, I love listening to this CD, but for whatever reason the tunes just aren't as memorable as those on Turn of the Tides. That being said, it is a great CD and there is some great guitar work. Turn of the Tides and Tyranny of Beauty should be in the collection of any instrumental rock fan or guitar enthusiast. I think the saxophone is more prominent on this CD than the predecessor, but it doesn't detract from the listening experience in my humble opinion. Some standout tracks for me are Catwalk, Birdwatcher's Dream, Living In a Fountain Pen, and Haze of Fame.
Similar to its predecessor, the only thing that could make this CD better would be the use of an actual drum set then the drum machine/synth samples that they use for their drums.
Awesome!.......2003-06-24
This is a highly hypnotizing and energetic blend of dance and dark ambient New Age beats all on one great CD! "Catwalk", "Little Blond" and "Living in A Fountain Pen" are just sheer beauty! Buy this CD! That's all I can say for now!

This album was my first TD album, so it set the standard for the many other TD albums I would purchase since then. I have listened to their previous works and their works since, and I maintain my position that Tyranny of Beauty is a high water mark for this group.
This is a fusion of many different musical styles, and the variety of sounds and instruments creates a genre in itself. Every track is good, with the possible exception of the final track.
Take this album on a road trip and listen to it from beginning to end. I have played this album more than anything else in my collection, and it still amazes me. I give it my highest recommendation.
One of Tangerine Dream's finest moments!.......2002-03-12
I'm not sure why this disc has recieved the less-than-enthusiastic reviews that it has. But as a long-time fan of German synthesizer-meisters Tangerine Dream, I find this 1995 release to be one of the band's most memorable and musically satisfying albums. Unlike some of those long-term T.D. "fans" who inexplicably dismiss anything post-Christopher Franke (or worse, knock the band's use of modern synth & persussion sounds), I feel that, with perhaps a few minor exceptions, T.D. has aged VERY well as a creative force. In my opinion, the group's newer music (under the guidance of founding-member Edgar Froese) has remained of a very high quality, and quite true to the artistic spirit of Tangerine Dream's legacy. Built around complex chord progressions, bright melodic lines, gripping, evocative rhythms, and some of the most detailed and dynamic arrangements in modern music, the compositions here on "Tyranny of Beauty" rate right alongside T.D.'s best work, old or new. The father/son keyboard team of Edgar & Jerome Froese show that they are still full of solid musical ideas, and they recieve ample help here from keyboard/woodwind artist Linda Spa, and a couple of guest guitarists. Speaking of the guitarists; the use of clean, bright acoustic lead guitars on a few tracks really adds something new and fresh to the music, demonstrating that Tangerine Dream still have some musical horizons to explore and experiment with...So much for the critisism that modern T.D. never try anything new! : ) To my ears, standout tracks include the album opener "Catwalk" (which marries thumping techno-rhythms & layered synth-textures with an alost "classical" flavor...very clever!), "Birdwatcher's Dream" (very rich in melody, with nice use of thick, harmonized guitars in the beginning, and stacatto picking in the middle), "Little Blond In the Park of Attractions" (simple but hypnotic, with a calming "new-agey" feel) "Living in a Fountain Pen" (more of "rock" feel, with a melody that sort of sneeks up on you), "Haze of Fame" (the longest track on the album, with a very progressive structure and a beautiful "atmospheric" section at that appear like bookends and the begginning end of the piece) and, last but not least, "Bride in Cold Tears" (one of my favorite T.D. tracks of all-time, a perfect blend of churning rhythms, subtle melodies, quick chord changes, and unique sound textures as only T.D. can do!) Each of these tracks makes for an intriguing sonic journey on its own terms, and also works well in the context of the overall album. Let me say that this is an album that stands up well to repeated listens, and to be fair, some listeners may need a few listens to fully appreciate it's charms. For instance; at first listen I felt that the albums title track ("Tyranny of Beauty") was a weak link in the line-up of songs. However, after a few more listens that track became one of my favorites, and I now can't imagine the album without it! This is a true credit to the artistry of Tangerine Dream - in this World of "catchy" 3 minute sound bytes and disposable pop stars, Edgar & Jerome Froese are not afraid to create music that challenges the listener to really LISTEN! All in all, if you enjoy the music of Tangerine Dream, particularly the 80's/90's period of T.D., then ignore the naysayers and give "Tyranny of Beauty" a listen for yourself...You may find much to enjoy, just as I did.

Product Description
For the first time on CD, here is the official reissue of "Blue" Gene Tyranny's first album from 1977 (originally one of the first Lovely Music releases) beautifully remastered, with new artwork and 24-page booklet. This is a long awaited event for some and will be an unexpected surprise for others. Blue is a Grammy-nominated composer and pianist who has performed on records by Robert Ashley (Perfect Lives, Celestial Excursions), John Cage, and Laurie Anderson, yet this is quite different. Composing for what is essentially a chamber rock ensemble, a cast of female vocalists, and himself on the Polymoog and RMI synthesizers, Blue has created a song-cycle that reflects his intensely melodic and free piano technique in a polished studio record. Out of the Blue elegantly combines adventurous New Music technique, the style and appeal of pop music, and the grace of classical music to form an unclassifiable and totally revelatory whole. The album consists of the sublimely poppy "Next Time Might Be Your Time," the searing and soaring instrumental "for David K.," the soulful, contemplative hymn "Leading a Double Life," and finally the casually-epic 26 minute masterpiece for voices & electronic and acoustic instruments, "A Letter from Home." Endearing, exciting, approachable yet unlike anything else Out of the Blue is a very friendly record.
