5 out of 5 stars A Great Trower Pair.......2007-07-24

I agree with earlier review from Tommo 1957, songs from Twice Removed From Yesterday are great, including Hannah. I didn't know about the passing of Dewar. So sad to hear. This album turned me on to the great talent that was, and is now, Robin Trower. This album led perfectly to his masterpiece, Bridge of Sighs.
Robin and his newer band made their way here to Oklahoma City, and what a treat to see him, still cranking the lights out of his guitar.
Also, his anthology album showcases his work. I'd recommend that, as well as this pair, because Twice Removed is a classic!!

5 out of 5 stars top 10.......2007-07-01

Come on.........everyone knows Bridge of Sighs is in the top ten and it includes the first album. Can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Bridge of sighs.......2007-02-12

I loved "bridge of sighs" the first time I heard it. I found many of the other songs enjoyable as well. There are a few songs on this (double) album that are below par for Robin Trower, but it is still a good addition to anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars Trower at his peak.......2007-01-07

Bridge of Sighs and Twice Removed From Yesterday represent Robin Trower at his peak. Combining with Reg Isidore on drums and the vocals of James Dewar, Trower creates an atmosphere filled with dreamy guitar riffs, while still allowing the vocal talents of Dewar to shine.
The Hendrix influence is obvious, yet this is not a Jimi clone. Trower remains one of the most under-rated guitarists of his generation.

4 out of 5 stars Two for One.......2006-11-04

Classic Trower, including his most well known work Bridge of Sighs. Can't go wrong for the price.

5 out of 5 stars I once knew a pair that used to fit very tight............2007-02-23

In what can only be called a Pop/Grunge masterpiece this album was truly ahead of its time and anyone interested in the evolution of music through the mid-1990's should have this in their library.

Twice voted as the Greatest Canadian Album of All-Time by Chart Magazine in 1996 and 2005, beating out Neil Young's Harvest and Joni Mitchell's Blue, this album blows me away every time I hear it, even 13 years on. Sloan was signed to Geffen after their fuzzy and chrunchy debut Smeared. After hearing this album, Geffen refused to promote its release in 1994, due to its departure from their previous sound as well as the grunge tastes of the day. This resulted in Sloan ultimately being dropped from Geffen.

However, this was obviously short-sighted, given the eventual prominence of this record in the Canadian rock pantheon.

Sloan is indeed a talented group, featuring four multi-instrumentalist-songwriter-singers and this record marks their turn towards blending pop harmonies and melodies with grunge guitars and rock beats. This sound continues to be heard in their music today, 6 or 7 albums later.

The first five tracks of this record, might be the strongest run of songs on any album in the 1990s, let alone in Sloan's career, pulling you into this brave leap of experimentation.

This was a new sound, that clearly the world wasn't ready for. This album is timeless, its just a shame no one knew it in 1994.

4 out of 5 stars a little Radiohead & a little Weezer..........2005-01-07

This is a 1994 release from a very smart band from Canada. They just toured with Jet and got some rave reviews. They are hard to describe. Overall they are too upbeat to be compared to Radiohead but too melancholy to be compared to Weezer but I could hear a little of both of those bands here. I could also hear some Kinks, Pretenders, Nirvana and Neil Young. Other people seem to want to compare them to The Beatles or The Beach Boys but I don't hear that at all. But they are a pretty talented band and all four members take turns singing lead on various songs...and sometime the bassist plays lead and the guitarist play bass. Interesting concept that you don't see very often. Overall not a bad CD. They probably play stadiums in the Great White North.

5 out of 5 stars I'll Never Get Tired Of It.......2004-05-12

This album has so many fantastic songs. The band members each wrote and sung lead vocals on different songs, which gives the CD a varied feel. It ranges from upbeat and poppy but oh-so-awesome to slower or rockier. It's all bright and enjoyable music, with intriguing lyrics and classic "ba ba ba ba da ba's".

Highlights include:
"Penpals"
"I Hate My Generation"
"People Of The Sky"
"Coax Me"
"Shame Shame"
"Worried Now"

There aren't any songs you'll want to skip. The entire thing is more than worthwhile. This is tied with NAVY BLUES as my favourite Sloan CD.

5 out of 5 stars Power Pop? Power ROCK!.......2003-07-31

This is a top ten MUST have records of the 1990's if you are ANY kind of rock fan. Many people categorize Sloan as pop music but I think perhaps authentic rock 'n' roll might be more fitting.
Everything on this album is unapologetically catchy and singable. The lyrics are clever, biting, funny and touching. Sweet, vunerable yet reflective and revealing. Get ready to feel irreverant and lovelorn. Hear the snowsuit sound and know this album is deeper than it's beauty.
If you like the hip, oasis, blur, the smiths, beach boys, beatles you will love Sloan and this record will blow your proverbial socks off.

5 out of 5 stars Deep beauty.......2002-04-21

In 'Deeper than Beauty' -- an energetic pop masterpiece that doesn't suffer at all from an absence of bass guitar -- the final refrain contains the lines, "We're like the rest of them with our thumbs up our .../ If you call I will come, but I'm about as thick as molasses / When I dream of you you're not wearing your glasses". If this kind of cheeky, smirky, but oh-so-pertinent lyrical style isn't your cup of tea, maybe Sloan is not for you.

If Sloan is for you, then you probably like pop songs written from the point of view of East-Indian thirteen-year-olds whose English is kind of clunky ('Penpals'). Or melancholic songs -- with both chugga-chugga and jangly rhythm guitaring -- where the narrator at one point "saw his widow speak on her fortunes", and then later "saw her widow's peak on her forehead" ('Coax Me'; this song also contains the line: "It's not the band I hate, it's their fans"... sometimes I feel like I can quote Sloan lyrics all day long). Or sweet paeans to our innocent days on the school playground ('Snowsuit Sound'). Or an album stacked top to bottom with great pop songs written by four great pop songwriters with very distinctive pop songwriting styles. You probably like adventurous melodies that aren't afraid to be backed up by harmonious "La-la-la's". And punky/jazzy drumming. And bouncy, melodic bass playing.

For my money, this is pure Sloan. Which means its about as good as it gets when it comes to alterna-pop music.

This is one of those albums you put on while relaxing on a lazy summer day. The pop-rock, laid back tunes are some of the best you'll find from a contemporary group.

5 out of 5 stars Best rock album of the 1990s........1999-07-02

Sloan is just God. The extra tracks are worth it so you don't have to kiss any buttcrack for those rarities, which, after listening to Sloan for a while, you realize you must have. Canadians are so lucky and they just don't even know it.

4 out of 5 stars The world gets its first taste of Trower power.......2004-10-25

Twice Removed From Yesterday (1973.) Robin Trower's first album.

One of the greatest rock and roll guitarists of all time, as well as one of the most underrated, was Robin Trower. His first major role was playing guitar for the British progressive rockers Procol Harum. Eventually, Trower grew tired of progressive rock, and wanted to do music his own way. That's why he went solo. Recruiting the assistance of bassist/vocalist James Dewar and an equally-talented drummer, Trower's newfound heavy blues rock trio set out to rock the world. Twice Removed From Yesterday, Trower's first solo release, came out in 1973. Read on for my review.

Robin Trower's solo sound greatly differs from that of the work he did with Procol Harum - and by differs from, I mean it's better! With his guitar, Trower manages to create a sort of "heavy blues rock" style that no other musical artist was ever able to replicate. The style makes for one of the most interesting classic rock experiences you're bound to ever listen to. Admittingly though, the group's debut isn't their finest hour - James Dewar, for one, hasn't quite found his voice yet (he sounds more like Paul Rodgers than he does himself on future Trower albums.) Despite this not being Trower's best album, it's a solid album that puts the work of most other so-called "guitar heroes" of the day to shame. From start to finish, this is an excellent album that combines hard and heavy songs with slower, more melodic ones - and there isn't a dull moment anywhere in between. It's a highly recommended album.

Sadly though, Trower's solo debut is out of print in America (as of October 24, 2004.) Fortunately, an import solution is available - a twofer CD featuring this album and Trower's most famous work, his sophomore album Bridge Of Sighs, is now available in some European countries. But don't bother making the trip to Europe to pick it up - Amazon is now selling this twofer. Don't be deceived by the American remaster of Bridge of Sighs with bonus tracks - the import twofer is a much better deal.

In 1973, the world got its first taste of Trower power - and it was good. Robin Trower's band would continue to release album after album of blues rock masterpieces, rarely failing to please audiences. And this album is where Trower's solo mastery got its start. Admittingly, the debut is NOT the best place to start your Trower collection - but since it's on a twofer with the ever-so-popular and ever-so-awesome Bridge Of Sighs now, why not get that twofer first? Trower's work is not to be missed by any fan of classic rock.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Masterpiece.......2005-09-21

Much has been written about Sloan over the years, but this album is truly where they came into their own. The album starts off with a pop blast in "Penpals", but gets even better with the second song "I hate my generation" (which incidentally shows their skill in swapping lead singers and harmonies effortlessly). The third song "People of the Sky" is just as good and the album never lets peaking in intensity with the seventh song "Worried Now". The two songs leafing up to this ("Bells On and "Loosens") are the perfect complements and after a few listens this whole album weaves its harmonic perfection upon your ears.

I think that this album is one of Sloan's best, if not, THE best. It has the perfect amount of up-tempo songs, and the mellow, heartfelt ones. "Bells On" and "Loosens" have to be some of my all time favorite songs, while "Coax Me" and "Deeper Than Beauty" have always been high on my list! One disappointment, however, was "Before I Do" that starts out awesome but takes a million years to end, resulting in a track over 7 minutes long. This is a minor detail in an amazing CD that I would listen to over and over!

5 out of 5 stars in my top 5 desert island discs!.......1999-06-11

This is one of the best albums i have ever heard-listen, and you'll fall in love, i'm telling you. You just wanna dance and sing, with the uplifting, catchy choruses, and the la-la melodies, it's sugary sweet, and masterfully done at that. Some of the greatest word puns ever, and the funniest lyrics-"if i had a funeral, would you even care? Would you wear your silver dress? Would you actually wear lipstick?"-(from bells on). "And your glasses, your hideous glasses, when you remove them i would rather skip my classes and be caught, then to entertain the thought, that someday you might put them on again."-(from deeper than beauty). This is just a sample of the fun of this cd-every song is great-all the guys sing, so there's vocal variety, and some of the songs are upbeat and fast paced, while some, like the beautiful "loosens", are slow and meandering. Either way, they're all gems. I love these guys-i saw them live and they were great, and a while ago, i wrote them a fan letter asking where i could get info on them, and a long while later, they actually wrote me back a real letter!! How many artists would do that?? "I can feel it" is a sweet, cute love song, and the female vocalist complements it perfectly. I love these guys, and for any sloan fan, it's common knowledge that this is their most wonderful album ever. This is THE ONE, guys. I'll never stop listening.
