This 26-cut compilation rounds up virtually everything ever recorded by the Left Banke, the awesomely talented pop band best known for the classically-influenced 1966 hits "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina." Songwriter/pianist/guiding light Michael Brown composed some of the loveliest melodies of the era, which were typically fleshed out with complex contrapuntal harmonies and string arrangements; "Barterers and Their Wives" sounds almost medieval, while the soaring "Desiree" is positively majestic in its epic sweep. Brown left before the recording of the band's second album, which means that the quality level dips slightly near the end of the disc. Despite this, any '60s pop collection is woefully incomplete without it. --Dan Epstein

Much Ado About Little.......2007-07-10
Well, a fool and their money. . .
An ravishing & essential collection.......2007-06-02
A Quality CD From A Great Band.......2007-03-10
The Left Banke's first album, Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina is definitely their best. Lead singer Steve Martin-Caro's voice and Michael Brown's songwriting and harpiscord playing, along with the background harmonies of Tom Finn and George Cameron are just magical. The only song that sounds a bit odd is the country sounding "What Do You Know."
The second album, Left Banke Too has some great songs like "Desiree" and "There's Gonna Be A Storm." This album also features George Cameron and Tom Finn sharing leads on some of the songs. Tom Finn has a great voice and in my opinion should have done a solo LP.
There are a few tracks I feel do not belong on this CD. There were three songs recorded under The Left Banke name that feature Bert Sommer on lead vocals. These songs include "Men Are Building Sand," "And Suddenly," and the Tom Fair composition, "Ivy, Ivy." The only real Left Banke member on these songs is Michael Brown. Some fans do like having these songs in their collection though, dispite them not having core members Martin-Caro/Finn/Cameron on them.
There are also two tracks which are only Steve Martin-Caro and Michael Brown. These tracks are the lovely "Myrah" and it's flip side, "Pedestal."
In all, this is a great collection. I don't know anyone who was ever disappointed by it. The CD is now OOP and goes anywhere from $40 to $100 on eBay and other sites. I hope in the future, someone will be smart enough to make a proper Left Banke collection including all three albums and unreleased tracks. Polygram/Mercury was foolish to stop the production of this great CD.
I'll Go Along With That!.......2006-11-01
I must say that the only positive statements I've personally encountered concerning this collection have been here at Amazon. I have a friend in Connecticut who hates this collection. I have a brother-in-law who described it in one word: "Depressing." Bunk! These are great songs! Well written; well executed; and for the most part, well produced! Thank goodness I've always trusted my own ears. The other comments are pretty accurate with their discriptions and comparisons. Read the comments, and if what they say is agreeable to you, then this disc probably will be too. But, as stated in earlier reviews, this disc is out of print, which means paying through the nose if you want it.
long overdue.......2006-08-26
