Longtime followers of the artist once again known as Prince won't be surprised by the spiritual content of his erratic yet exhilarating new CD. After all, Prince has been straddling the gulf between the sacred and the profane for most of his career. Yet the almost nakedly religious tone of The Rainbow Children is compelling. Witness (and that's the operative word) the airy closing track "Last December," in which Prince and a choir proclaim "In the name of the Father and the name of the Son / We need 2 come together, come 2gether as one." The release is palpable, and throughout much of this CD, Prince, motivated by this love of the spirit, sounds as good as he has in years. From the gentle waltz "She Loves Me 4 Me" to the laid-back jazzy vibe of "Mellow," redemption is laced underneath the grooves. Even when Prince veers way off into left field (as he does with the cartoonish narrative throughout the CD), he makes a joyful and funky noise. --Amy Linden

This charming, super-casual collection began as a children's record and later became a "family" record--a designation that reflects the contributions of Nelson's daughter Amy as well as the inclusion of more "adult" material. It's difficult to think of another artist who'd pull together such a unique selection of songs. Nelson tackles odd kid-friendly little ditties from country's past such as "I'm My Own Grandpa" (a 1948 hit for Lonzo & Oscar), the Western swing favorite "Won't You Ride in My Little Red Wagon," and Jimmie Dolan's boogie "Playin' Dominoes and Shootin' Dice," a drinking-and-fighting song that is presumably a cautionary tale for the little ones. The more traditional children's fare ("Four Leaf Clover," "Playmate," title track) comes early on, but by the end of the disc Nelson seems to have lost interest in the album's original premise, moving to hardcore blues ("Outskirts of Town"), Mickey Newbury's psychedelic folk rock ("I Just Dropped In"--daddy, how do you trip on a cloud?), and Newbury's sober, complex "33rd of August." Amy Nelson wrote and sang two delightful kiddie tunes while papa Willie adds one new original, the jaunty, optimistic "Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way." To be sure, Rainbow Connection is a low-key, informal affair, and what would sound sloppy by most other artists is of course endearing by Willie. In the end, this "family CD" is like a bowl of chocolate ice cream: it ain't as special as a sundae or even a cone, but who doesn't like chocolate ice cream? --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:
A great album.......2005-07-29
Lost in Underland.......2003-08-27
But, if you really listen to the songs, you will find that they are over-engineered. Somebody telling him how to sing, or simply using an amplitude cut during mid sentence. There are a lot of "rushed" lyrics... (While you can hear the real Willie in some of them.. which makes you love the CD).
You'll soon find yourself wondering why that last note faded off without a real reason. For example "Have you been half asleep" on the CD is "have you been half...." it cuts off so fast that you miss any character or value that Willie Nelson brings to a CD. But you can hear his voice carry, but, just unnaturally get cut... His voice is unmistakable, and that quality HE can bring to a song is inmistakable.
Over engineering takes it's bite away from the musician here. While I still recommend the CD, don't expect too much.
Sweet kids & adults album.......2002-05-01
There are some just plain sweet little songs on this record. There are some fun songs, then there are some good blues songs. Point is that they are all good. The last couple of songs don't seem to fit with the whole record, but they are good songs.
I am a huge Willie fan, but the very best part of this record is his daugther Amy's two beautiful children's songs. She has a wonderful voice, and the song she wrote is fun, clever, and cute.
Highly recommend this CD.
Better every listen!.......2002-04-30
I am a thirty-something adult with no kids, and I love almost every song on this album (Ol' Blue excluded). This is definitely the musical equivalent of "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" : A surreal trip that leaves you happy. If you are trying to decide which of the latest WIllie albums to buy, this is the one (NOT "The Great Divide").
A laid-back afternoon with Willie & friends.......2002-03-26
I'll admit, at first, I felt that Willie's cover of the Rainbow Connection was really sub-par for him, but after a few listens and getting into his phrasings and jazzy guitar picking I began to like it more and more. Won't You Ride In My Little Red Wagon is a song he has done before, and this version is simple and fun as is Playmate. Ol' Blue is a get-a-lump-in-your-throat song about a dog that Willie's grandmother used to sing to him. I'm My Own Grandpa is a hilarious number that Willie does particularly well. The sole song that Willie wrote himself is Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way-which I suppose is the heart of this CD.
So why not five stars? Well, two Songs, Rock Me To Sleep and Wise Old Me, are sung by Willie's daughter, and while she is probably a sweet person, and I don't mean to be mean-her voice really grates on me. You may feel differently, but a sparsely produced effort such as this takes a lot of talent to carry off, and I'm not quite sure if this was the best way for Willie to showcase his daughter's singing. I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover sounds like it was a lot of fun to make. Unfortunately, it is not much fun to listen to.
But the great thing about a CD is that it is easy to skip tracks you don't care for. The bulk of this CD is well worth listening to. I predict you'll play tracks 9 through 13 again after you've heard it through the first time. It's just Willie in his own studio with a couple of friends making simple honest music. If you were disappointed with the lush production of The Great Divide, this is for you. If you loved The Great Divide, but also love Willie and his guitar and little else, this is for you.

- Interview With William Kapell
Amazon.com essential recording
Blessed with transcendent technique and an affinity for big, bold Romantic works, William Kapell has been hailed as America's greatest homegrown pianist. This comprehensive collection of his complete recorded output, previously unreleased recordings, and broadcast tapes adds luster to a reputation that's become legendary since his tragic death in a plane crash at age 31. The earliest recordings, from the mid-1940s, bristle with raw energy and virtuosic flourishes tempered by an innate musicality that rises above mere display. The disc coupling Khachaturian and Prokofiev concertos is charged with excitement; the Rachmaninoff pairing of the Paganini Variations and the Concerto No. 2 weds the Grand Romantic style to poetic lyricism; and an inspired Liszt group is charged with dynamic energy. Best may be the two Chopin discs: spontaneous, rhythmically flexible sonatas and mazurkas. The later recordings demonstrate the repose that comes with artistic maturity, and the "live" broadcasts reveal Kapell's warmth and spontaneity in concert. Splendid transfers help make this long-awaited set appealing to music lovers in general, as well as piano buffs. --Dan Davis

Very touched.......2006-09-24
In Memorium.......2005-10-29
A few years later, in the middle 50's, I bought Kapell's recording of the same work, with Fritz Reiner and the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra (alias of The Philadelphia Orchestra). I still have that LP, though I wore it out long ago. It was the beginning of my musical education. But since 1998, we have had this wonderful box of reissues from the vaults of RCA. The sound is mostly excellent, considering the age of the monophonic originals. To this day, Kapell's Rachmaninov Rhapsody remains-in my opinion-the most impassioned, yet the most musical, reading of the piece ever recorded. No one had, or has, Kapell's combination of white-hot temperament, technical brilliance, and musical insight. We have had musical geniuses; technical wizards abound. It is the combination of these gifts, as Kapell possessed them in particular, married to his incendiary passion, that made him unique.
He was still learning, and he was learning at such an astounding rate! He had moved from Khachaturian to the most unforgettable Chopin B minor Sonata ever recorded in little more than a decade. His deep throated, noble, and articulate Bach has caused some to speculate that Glenn Gould might have found his inspiration in Kapell. One Gould biographer, and a New York critic, wrote that the reverse was true. The critic acknowledged the error, in print, noting that Kapell could not have been influenced by Gould's style since he had been dead for two years by the time of Gould's debut recital in New York City in 1955.
The lyrical side of romantic music is not what Kapell was or is known for, not his "style" as people remember him now. But listening to the lyrical music in this set shows a side of him that was, nevertheless, as real as any, and perhaps more revealing. It also gives us a notion of what we might have expected of William Kapell had he lived a normal span of years and played a normal variety of music. In a live performance, he plays Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 1, with melting legato and exquisite timing: his innate sense about when to tug on the beat and when to surge forward makes the music breathe. His use of dynamic variety demands the greatest respect: at one point, the repetition of a melodic phrase is but a pale echo of its first statement. His tonal palette is no less wondrous. When a deep bass note suddenly appears, early in the A section of the ABA structure, it sounds-not loud nor quiet, not muffled nor distinct-but awesomely subterranean. Kapell begins the piece without much sustaining pedal, but in the B section, he subtly adds more and more. Then, when the A section returns near the end, the pedal disappears. This dramatic change in color-along with Chopin's change of key-seems like the parting of clouds. We are in the hands of two masters here, Chopin and Kapell. Kapell gave this performance in Carnegie Hall in February of 1945, when he was twenty-two years old.
In the Bach and Chopin works I've discussed, the steely, percussive tone that some speak of is nowhere to be heard. Rather, we hear a full, rich, and complex piano tone. In the Chopin Sonatas, the Debussy pieces, and the Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Albeniz, the sound Kapell produces is beautiful and varied.
He was a chamber musician of the first order, as his collaborations with Heifetz prove. (He was one of the very few musicians who had the force of personality to make Heifetz accompany HIM. And you can hear it.) And if you've never heard Rachmaninov's great Cello Sonata, played here with the grand Russian/German cellist Edmund Kurtz, you're in for a treat. There are several fine, modern stereo recordings, but this one is special. The piano part is very important-Rachmaninov did write it, after all-and Kapell is magnificent. This was Rachmaninov's next published work after the 2nd Piano Concerto, to give you an idea of its melodic grandeur. If there is a flaw here, it is that the piano is recorded too far back, relative to the cello.
Kapell died on October 30, 1953. He had just turned thirty-three. He played his last recital in Geelong, Australia, on the 22nd. It included the Chopin 2nd Piano Sonata which contains the well-known "Marche funèbre." That performance is included here, transferred from the original acetates. It is a great performance but very hard to listen to now, in light of what was to follow just over a week later. I am writing this one day short of the 52nd anniversary of Kapell's death. Had he lived until today, he would be younger than either Earl Wild or Ivan Moravec, both of whom are still making magnificent music. For those of us who love William Kapell's music, it is heartbreaking to consider, and fruitless. Thank Heaven we have recordings like the ones in this set. They are essential for any lover of good music.

Priceless Souvenirs from a Rare Genius: Ave Atque Vale.......2005-10-28
William Kapell is still considered by most as the America's greatest pianist, even fifty odd years after his death at the age of 31 in a plane crash. Those who heard him perform still rhapsodize over the magic he created. Those of us who are left with only recordings, such as this spectacular boxed set of all of his recordings, can only be uplifted by the man's genius, his extraordinary technical facility, and his intuitive, profound approach to the great works of music.
All styles of music were easily accessible to Kapell. Listen to the Mozart, Bach, Scarlatti, Paganini and Mendelssohn and try to imagine performances of more clarity and finesse than these. His Chopin is well represented in this set and glows with the uncanny power and tenderness that Chopin combined in his works. His works for solo piano by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich are the gold standard, and yet his Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mussorgsky and Liszt raise the bar for excellence that has since not been excelled. Joyously this set includes concerti including Prokofiev, Beethoven, Khachaturian, and Rachmaninov with the various conductors who saw Kapell's gifts and championed them.
The memory of this great artist is felt throughout the year, but never as acutely as on October 29th which marks the date of his cruel death. The world was brightened for too short a time by William Kapell, yet because of his recorded legacy his legend lives on. This is an impossibly fine box set of treasures. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

Album Description
Parent's Guide to Children's Media Award! Children's Music Web Award for Best Recording for Pre-Schoolers! Parenting Magazine's Parenting Picks! Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence!A jam-packed recording with 60 traditional and original songs and rhymes within 60 minutes! The project's musical style covers folk, R&B, swing, reggae, rock, and lullabies, showcasing extraordinary kid and grownup performers - all framed within an imaginative Re-Bop tea party skit that will engage and inspire kids from 6 months to 8 years old. To encourage interaction, a beautifully illustrated lyric and rhyme booklet is included.
The CD's richly produced, dawn-to-dusk concept begins, naturally, with waking up and breakfast songs and rhymes, such as Colin McCaffrey's fiddle-lively "Wake Up Baby, Day's A-Breaking" and the Mother Goose classic "Pat-A-Cake, Pat-A-Cake." Then it's tea party preparation time with "To Market, To Market," "Hickory Dickory Dock," and soul sensation Sandra Wright's wailing "Old Mother Hubbard." The tea party itself is celebrated with gems like "Mary Had A Little Lamb," "I'm A Little Teapot," and a rocking "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean." The special day winds down with "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and the exquisitely arranged lullaby "All The Pretty Little Horses."
This is the first of two releases in coordination with the Mother Goose Programs (TM), an early education literacy and professional development series affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book. "WHAT IS IT? Musical Math & Science" is the second award-winning release in the series.

Customer Reviews:
The supreme genius of William Kapell!.......2006-07-09
In particular in what concerns to this volume. His Bach's performance is unerring. The purity and crystalline phrasing walks joined with that profound musicality and remarkable expression, tinged of this dark poetry and magisterial fingering: Kapell exuded humanity, sentiment and conviction. As a matter fact, I was precisely listening this album and immediately went for my other battle horses: Glenn Gould, a brilliant and pitifully unavailable edition of Paul Badura Skoda in the fifties and in spite of the fact we are talking essential references they have nothing to do respect this superb musical register.
The miniaturist Sonata of Scarlatti is simply unbeatable. It owns brightness, meridian neatness and enraptured elegance.
His Mozart `s Adagio is loaded with a sublime lyricism. But when you listen Albeniz' s Evocation you will remain amazed with such pristine performance: one of his greatest achievements.
It will be hard for all us, to listen again such expressive version of Piano Playtime, composed by Abram Chasins as well as his Toccata Obstinato.
His Debussy is emblematically atmospheric and incorporeal. The impressionist scents are suggested with an absolute employment of the pedal. How will you be able to forget this unsurpassable performance of "The girl with the flaxen hair" under the velvet fingering and aristocratic approach of W.K.? . To my mind, Children' s corner is to Debussy what Childhood scenes meant for Robert Schumann; a set of lovable and easy to listen pieces for the simple delight of smart kids, but hovered with that magic scent of poetic expression, naïve freshness and engaging lyricism, that would seem to anticipate the future Erik Satie' s Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes.
Believe me when I tell you that, in case you have not acquired the complete box of ten volumes, by several reasons, you should begin with this album; and after that you will be seriously thinking as a first rank priority to get the entire box.
In William Kapell's memory (Sep 20 1922 / Oct. 29 1953).
