With her Boyfriends, Neko Case blurs the line between rock and country, but when playing the rare gig as one-half of the Corn Sisters, she's all roots. Here, along with Sister Carolyn Mark, you'll find 16 laid-back and unpolished acoustic tunes (some covers, some originals) recorded one fateful night in 1998 at Seattle diner/bar Hattie's Hat. The songs vary in spunk, but most of Case's influences are exposed here--stripped-down covers of Loretta Lynn's "Fist City," Lucinda Williams's "Howlin' at Midnight," and one standard, "This Little Light of Mine," are all impressive. Everly Brothers-inspired harmonies abound, and, on the handful of folksy originals, Mark steals the show. From the lovesick ballad "Matinéed" to the more-upbeat "Not a Doll" (sounding slightly like Mary Lou Lord's better material), these are great tunes. Neko Case completists will want to hear this project (and Neko's work with power-popsters the New Pornographers), and alt-country fans won't be disappointed by this low-key, fun hootenanny. --Jason Verlinde

classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
These Georgia boys have old-school country down pat, full of whining pedal steel, biting guitar, and most importantly, Dave Marr's tortured vocals. Not for the weak of heart, Marr's songs update the tear-in-your-beer honky-tonk aesthetic, but they have an emotional depth and sincerity that make them stick in your head. --Marc GreilsamerAmazon.com
Somewhere between Dwight Yoakam's yearning twang and Richard Buckner's pained warble is Dave Marr's soulful and emotion-soaked moan and whine, used to great effect on this Athens, Georgia, quintet's sharp debut. The sound borrows heavily from the edgy and crisp Bakersfield style, with only the slightest hint of cool to soften the edges of Marr's sad shuffles and sadder ballads. With Philip McArdle's electric guitar and one-time Two Dollar Pistol Johnny Neff's steel snapping back and forth behind him, Marr dissects the failed and failing relationship across 13 straight-shooting originals that are wise enough not to even try to answer the title's rhetorical question. --Marc GreilsamerCustomer Reviews:

They Left the Best 'Til Last.......2005-08-08
The album has four great cuts. Endicott was probably the groups' biggest hit, with considerable play as an MTV video. In it the Kid tries to defend himself against unfavorable comparisons to a paragon of virtue named Endicott. The band is in peak form.
Particul'y Interested, in which the Kid professes love for his latest, has a massive groove that grabs you and won't quit.
Take Me, my favorite song ever by the band, features the Kid being aggressively pursued. The damn thing is one non-stop hook from beginning to end, with the band providing a propulsive force to back a hilarious lyric. How this song gets left off of greatest hits and best of collections totally mystifies me.
Caroline Was a Dropout is an ode to a old flame for whom things didn't turn out so well, done as only the Kid can with a mix of sadness, distain and attitude.
At the time this was released, I walked around wondering why Prince was so big while Kid Creole struggled to get the recognition he so richly deserved. Listening to this, I still wonder why.
