With her Boyfriends, Neko Case blurs the line between rock and country, but when playing the rare gig as one-half of the Corn Sisters, she's all roots. Here, along with Sister Carolyn Mark, you'll find 16 laid-back and unpolished acoustic tunes (some covers, some originals) recorded one fateful night in 1998 at Seattle diner/bar Hattie's Hat. The songs vary in spunk, but most of Case's influences are exposed here--stripped-down covers of Loretta Lynn's "Fist City," Lucinda Williams's "Howlin' at Midnight," and one standard, "This Little Light of Mine," are all impressive. Everly Brothers-inspired harmonies abound, and, on the handful of folksy originals, Mark steals the show. From the lovesick ballad "Matinéed" to the more-upbeat "Not a Doll" (sounding slightly like Mary Lou Lord's better material), these are great tunes. Neko Case completists will want to hear this project (and Neko's work with power-popsters the New Pornographers), and alt-country fans won't be disappointed by this low-key, fun hootenanny. --Jason Verlinde

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

With her Boyfriends, Neko Case blurs the line between rock and country, but when playing the rare gig as one-half of the Corn Sisters, she's all roots. Here, along with Sister Carolyn Mark, you'll find 16 laid-back and unpolished acoustic tunes (some covers, some originals) recorded one fateful night in 1998 at Seattle diner/bar Hattie's Hat. The songs vary in spunk, but most of Case's influences are exposed here--stripped-down covers of Loretta Lynn's "Fist City," Lucinda Williams's "Howlin' at Midnight," and one standard, "This Little Light of Mine," are all impressive. Everly Brothers-inspired harmonies abound, and, on the handful of folksy originals, Mark steals the show. From the lovesick ballad "Matinéed" to the more-upbeat "Not a Doll" (sounding slightly like Mary Lou Lord's better material), these are great tunes. First saw Neko at EMP in Seattle 3 years ago. Her voice is amazingly versatile, eery just doesn't begin to describe the goosebumps her music gifts. The cornsisters is a fabulous teaming with Carolyn Mark, yet another unique and beautiful voice. I don't know why, but the Corn on the Cob song just makes me grin every single time I hear it!

i was lucky enough to have seen the Corn Sisters live quite a few years back and it was an absolutely stellar show. Neko and Carolyn were in fine form and when they weren't sending chills up your spine with their songs, they had you laughing so hard it hurt with their inbetween song banter. it's great to see how much fun these two girls have when they get together and it shows on this disc of live recordings. their natural chemistry spills over in every note. my favorite songs are "Not A Doll", "Don't Let Me Cross Over", and "She's Leaving Town" (a different version of that song is featured as a bonus track on here in which Carolyn sarcastically (?) describes the tune's author as a "weed-gobbling cheater" to much laughter). if you are a fan of Neko Case or Carolyn Mark's solo work, then you need the Corn Sisters in your life.

I bought this cd before I really knew Neko Case's music. It was the kind of purchase where I listened to the cd for 5 seconds in the store and immediately bought it. I don't regret it, in the least. Case & Mark's harmonies are tight without being cheesy. Their voices and playing sounds great together, and I even like the spontaneous "office party" sound that other reviewers complain about. Every time I hear it I imagine myself in that Seattle diner. The recording captures the rough edges and intimacy of the best live performances. "Too Many Pills" and "Fist City" are divine--two of my favorite tracks of all time.

Even though I am a big Neko Case fan (and Carolyn Mark fan to a lesser degree), I held off getting this CD for a long time because the reviews were so iffy. I'm sorry I waited - it's great. Even the sound quality is pretty decent - certainly not bad enough to detract from the songs. If you're not a big fan of either of these women, this may not be the CD to start with. But if you're holding off like I was because you're not sure it's worth it, you're missing out.

haunting and hilarious.......2002-04-10

i bought this album blind (or maybe deaf) on the strength of neko case's strikingly haunting voice and it immediately became one of my favorites. its stripped-down acoustic approach allows both case and mark's luminous vocals to shine unemcumbered. by turns funny (corn on the cob), and heartbreaking (don't let me cross over and long black veil), this is an album for the lovesick in need of a little cartharsis. Buy it.

I don't listen to much country music so I'm definitely not an expert, but I really like this CD. The singer has the perfect tortured inflection to his voice for this kind of old-school country. Each song is another heartache rendered by a group of very good musicians. If you're tired of the current crop of pop-country music, you should give The Star Room Boys a try.

These guys are great. I wish I had of caught them live while they were still together. I've have both the SRB CDs and never tire of them. If you like a classic country sound, I can't imagine you not loving this CD. I don't know of any other contemporay performers that do straight-up stuff like this. Fingers are crossed, hoping Dave Marr's artistic life isn't over.

This is the best band that no one has ever heard of. Fans of country and fans of rock both will love both of the Star Room Boys discs. Too bad they have broken up. They really had something truly special.

It's wonderful to see this appear on CD, as there are likely new audiences for the best stuff of Kid Creole and the Coconuts. I'd been following them since "Off The Coast Of Me" and bought this on vinyl right away. Then I bought the cassette and nearly wore it out in a year, traveling the highways of Arizona. My favorites are "Particul'y Int'rested" and "(Darlin' You Can) Take Me" (which is best played loud while cruising at 65 mph with the windows down and the AC on) and "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down." Highly recommended!

They Left the Best 'Til Last.......2005-08-08

For years I have been checking to see if they had released this album on CD, and was wondering if they ever would. Here, in 2005, they finally did. I never understood it because to these ears this is the best album Kid Creole & the Coconuts ever made. I saw the band perform most of this album in 1986 at the tiny Trocadero in Philadelphia. Best live performance of music I have ever seen.

The album has four great cuts. Endicott was probably the groups' biggest hit, with considerable play as an MTV video. In it the Kid tries to defend himself against unfavorable comparisons to a paragon of virtue named Endicott. The band is in peak form.

Particul'y Interested, in which the Kid professes love for his latest, has a massive groove that grabs you and won't quit.

Take Me, my favorite song ever by the band, features the Kid being aggressively pursued. The damn thing is one non-stop hook from beginning to end, with the band providing a propulsive force to back a hilarious lyric. How this song gets left off of greatest hits and best of collections totally mystifies me.

Caroline Was a Dropout is an ode to a old flame for whom things didn't turn out so well, done as only the Kid can with a mix of sadness, distain and attitude.

At the time this was released, I walked around wondering why Prince was so big while Kid Creole struggled to get the recognition he so richly deserved. Listening to this, I still wonder why.

Ronnie McDowell is by far one of the greatest, but sadly one of the most underrated country acts of all time. This is the only album where you will find original cuts of Ronnie's greatest hits. All of the big hits are here. This is a wonderful CD. It is hands down one of the greatest albums I own. If you are a Ronnie McDowell fan or a fan of 70's/80's country music, you WILL love this album.
