JON POUSETTE-DART
One thing you'd have to say about Jon Pousette-Dart is that he's not a very trendy type of guy, and that in itself is not an inconsiderable achievement for someone who's been quite unsuccessful in the music biz for about thirty years now.. When things got scary as the seventies petered out and the eighties skulked in, while folks were trying to figure out how they ever got stuck in the position of having to choose between Donna Summer and Johnny Rotten, the original Pousette-Dart Band did what any halfway moral responsible band would do, they took a break.
Alot of bands didn't have that much sense (remember them? - nope me neither). After all the band was doing really well: they'd been on a series of successful tours and performed with many of the most admired musicians of the time, among them the Byrds, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Little Feat, Yes, and Billy Joel to name a few, and they'd sold alot of records (four well-received albums on Capitol between 1976 and 1980, three of which were produced by Nashville great Norbert Putnam). Jon and his band were listed in Billboard as one of the busiest touring bands of the period, and their recording career was flourishing: but Jon felt they had proved their point, and opted to give the skirmish between punkers, the technoids, and the disco dancers a wide berth.
Jon was no stranger to the rapidly changing affections/ afflictions of the pop crowd, having been a rock n' roller as early as the late 60's, when at the ripe old age of 13, he'd played in a rock band with Tony and Hunt Sales (later to form the Tin Machine with David Bowie). There's alot of cool things about Jon, but here's one of the coolest: he actually played on the legendary TV series "Hullabaloo" with the Young Rascals, Peter & Gordon, Lesley Gore, the We Five, Jerry Lewis, The Cyrkle, and Barry & the Remains. As if that weren't enough, his band opened for the Animals, and, he actually lived with Soupy Sales (father of Tony and Hunt- unforgettable 60's maniac), who stole his jokes (or the other way around- I can't remember. Either way is good.
By 1971, Mr. Dart ( who up to this moment, has never been referred to as "Mr. Dart") had pretty much set off with his acoustic in hand to conquer the Northeastern coffeehouse circuit, and it was at that point that I first encountered him, playing for a small crowd on a Nantucket beach. The songs, even then were real good, and were performed (even then) with quiet intensity that was immediately compelling. Plus, he looked cool. It was obvious the kid was onto something.
Apparently it was obvious to well-known show -biz mogul Don Law, who, after seeing him open for John Hammond on the island the same summer immediatly swooped down and signed on as a manager, starting a relationship that would bring much credit to both parties. After a couple of years of refining and developing ( not to mention touring and building up a healthy pile of rabid fans), Jon signed a multi-album deal with Capitol in 1974.
In the second half of the 70's, the Pousette-Dart Band made four popular records for Capitol and toured incessantly. They worked hard enough that when an idea of a recess in the eighties presented itself, they seized on it as an opportunity to move on and pursue their individual careers, which they all did with a vengeance. In Pousette's case ( hey, it beats "Mr. Dart"), the layoff gave him a chance to move back to his old home town (New York City) and to establish himself there as a very successful singer, slide-guitarist, and songwriter-producer, he even did a bit of acting, a by-product of his involvement in the writing, production, and performance of commercial jingles for many national ad campaigns.. He began collaborating with songwriters such as Jacob Brackman, Al Anderson, Gary Burr, Gary Nicholson, and Kostas, and eventually returned to Nashville (where he recorded four albums for Capitol), to continue writing and recording. In 1991 when t
